Enough with the channels already
I feel this was an important one. Schools only talk about the air raids of WW2, they never mention it started in WW1. I was so confused when some dramas set in WW1 showed air raids with the Zeppelins, it's good to learn that they weren't being inaccurate at all.

I have long been fascinated by Zeppelins / Airships / Blimps/ whatever-you-want-to-call-'em. Thanks for this informative episode!
Zeppelins and Blimps are two different types of airships. Zeppelins are rigid airships whilst Blimps are non-rigid airships. To simplify things, think of Blimps as a balloon whilst Zeppelins has many balloons. And if you want to really dig into it then there are semi rigid airships as well as the new hybrid airships that are being made/researched. I would provide more info on the differences but google will probably serve you better.
Blimps are essentially balloons with engines. Zeppelins have an internal framework and are held aloft by bags containing the lifting gas.
A fun fact. The worst airship disaster in human history wasn't the Hindenburg. It was a US airship.
The USS Akron was the deadliest. Killing twice as many as died in the Hindenburg crash. In fact 2/3rds of the people on the Hindenburg actually survived.
It goes to show a press narrative is nothing new. How easy it is to spin things by leaving soon things out or just glossing over others.
Oddly enough I only exist today because of a zeppelin raid. My great grandfather was waiting to be deployed to the western front when a raid resulted in him losing his left arm. On his journey home back to Canada he met my great grandmother by chance and they were married a month later.

The Kaiser saying that he was concerned about hitting a Royale family member since they were cousins make the wars in Europe sound like family squabbles fought by the common people.
Wars are still like this. Putin started a war to annex Ukraine to boost his popularity. US presidents start wars to pretend they are helping the common man with oil prices. One of the only justifiable wars in the last century was WW2 to stop the Nazis and the Japanese.

The story of Germany's 4-engine giant bomber biplanes is worthy of it's own video.
I have a book called "The Zeppelin in Combat" by Douglas H. Robinson on this subject. it is an outstanding book if Zeppelins and their missions interest you.
This episode made me realize that Simon talks somewhat like Winston Churchill: With lots ... of ... not entirely appropriate ... pauses.

the bbc did a series on ww1 called the great war and interviewed one of the zeppelin crew and what struck me was him saying how cold it was in it (the episodes are on youtube)
I've been getting into this Channel lately. I am subscribed for all of Simon's Channels. This is the only one I wasn't watching regularly. I'm glad that's changed! I enjoy all of these episodes and binged most of them recently. If possible can you do more ancient battles? I know it isn't an easy ask for your script writer considering sources can differ widely, if they exist in detail at all. For those battles from ancient times that have details I'd love to see more. I feel as though we have a poor understanding of how battles were actually fought from Roman times and the pre-modern era even. Enjoyable video as always! Thank you Simon and Co!

Yes, I second the ancient battles. Like when Vlad the impaler, impaled his enemies. There's so many ancient battles it's hard to even think of individual instances to recommend

I thought the same thing. I didn't know what to suggest. So I went with the broad strokes. I lack the big brain to know the names of ancient battles off the top of my head. Glad to get replies from the Channel and someone seconding the suggestion. Can I third the idea even though I recommended it? Internet rules are different. Much to my dismay usually.

I’ve read two books on what is indeed the First Battle of Britain and what strikes me is how brutally mean-spirited the Zeppelin raids were. No war aims-just kill shopkeepers and children.
And yet it ended up the shape of things to come …
Actually that's pretty much untrue,. they had detailled maps and bomb-plans with target designation. They tried to hit targets like textile-warehouses, the Bank of England, Whitehall and other targets like that. Unfortunately the Bomb as such was a new technology in 1915, nevermind the bomb sight.

Airships with the designation SLxx where 'Schütte-Lanz' airships build with a wooden frame and ZLxx where 'real' Zeppelins build with an aluminum frame.
Even an 'ineffective' air defense has an effects in forcing the attackers to fly in high altitude, making aiming more difficult ore reducing the attack to night raids ...

Lighter than air craft have always been tempting to humans but also always ended in disappointment.
You got to respect a group of musicians in the late 60s who named their band after these things that killed so many.

My father used to talk about his mother hiding him and his siblings under the hedge when the Z eppelins flew overhead,they were living in Lowerstoft .
I'm surprised so few British people know about these raids? I was taught about it at school in the seventies. Then again the Schütte-Lanz 11 came down in Cuffley and Zeppelin L31 was shot down close by only a few weeks later over Potters Bar, both of which are only a few miles from my school. Also, back in the seventies, some older local people still remembered the event!

Excellent information about Zeppelin bombers during WW1...especially against British...for that ..since 1925 British defense efforts focused on royal airforce progression ...also its notable zeppelin riders were not effectiveness of caused much casualties amongst citizens...it was propagandist powerful & demoralized factor against civilians

Yes, I vaguely know about Raoul Lufbery, who invented the Lufbery Circle, a much used defensive formation. Perhaps he may be more suited for a Biographics video?
I often wonder what it must have been like, as a civilian in 1914/15, seeing those gigantic zeppelins over your town or city, just the sheer sight of them must have been absolutely terrifying at the time…
Great video, I always assumed that the zeppelins were always a sitting duck for anti-aircraft guns or fighter planes, but this wasn’t the case, given they could fly to much higher altitude much quicker than the aircraft at the time…

That would have been an early answer: Smaller airships capable of more than equaling the performance of the larger Zeps and devoted to intercepting them. Maybe equip them with larger, longer-range guns than the Zeps' machine guns.

Fascinating video. How about a follow-up video detailing the later Gotha bombing raids?
Whomever designed the quadroplane seems to have forgotten that drag existed. Yes, the four wings gave it a great advantage in climbing, but what looks to be dozens of struts supporting the wings would negate all of that.

One of the key battles of the US War Between the States; this battle had a significant moment of courage, heroism, and compassion when Sergeant, later 2nd Lt. Richard Rowland Kirkland of the CSA brought water to wounded Federals despite major risks to his person.

I think using the term “successful raid” in reference to the killing of 10 civilians is a bit counter intuitive. The phrase would not be used in the context of an ISIS attack.
