That's just it, isn't it? It's always the powerful, far from the front lines, who make the decisions that lead others on all sides to die. But no... instead we're fighting more and more with remote technology, the "enemy" faceless and nameless.

So fun fact, there was actually a much smaller version of the XMAS Truce in 1944. It only involved 8 men (4 Americans, 4 Germans) and only occurred because 4 GIs who got lost during the Battle of the Bulge were protected by a mother and her child.
My father told me about the Christmas Truce in the early 80ies. He was told about it from his stepfather, a British officer stationed in Hamburg, Germany (yes, my father and his mother are German). I sincerely don't know anything about the involvement of my stepgranddads family in the Great War. He died two years after I was born. Good video, but you forgot about the part on Christmas eve when Snoopy engaged and lost to the red baron. Snoopy survived the encounter because the red baron forced him to land beyond the rhine instead of shooting him down. In the spirit of Christmas, they shared a toast and then went their separate ways.

Beautifully told. I’m not religious but I used to do the Chris service in my local church and the Christmas truce was my spot every year. There’s so many conflicting sources but I feel that one of the reasons the war ended was because soldiers on each side realised that they were one in the same; a man forced to fight for a crown they’d never where. No doubt the Christmas Truce was one of the most famous examples of peace but, from what I’ve read, not the first nor the only example of humanity during a war where whity fought whity
The first time I had ever heard of this, I thought it was false.. It was beyond me how it was possible, when I realized it was true, it showed me how kind and friendly humans can be to each other.. If given the chance.. Also, damn it Simon, you're taking up half my subscriptions!
Hey Simon, love your work! I would love to see a video on Gallipoli, especially from the Australian perspective. The importance of Gallipoli cannot be overstated for what it means to be an Australian. Keep up the amazing content Fact Boy!
Yeah, I wouldn't think they would have an organized match, but just a pick up game, just kicking a ball around. Idk. The whole story is incredibly beautiful.

Garth Brooks has a song about this called Belleau Wood, and it's always been one of my favorite little known songs from him. Thanks for doing this video, Simon! And I am super excited for this new channel!
The most beautiful part of this, in my opinion, is that these men recognized the nature of war itself - that it's not about KILLING each other but that it's about defeating each other. Whether that defeat is because of intelligence or any other method, it doesn't mean war has to be full of death. These men knew they were enemies in war but they also recognized that, beyond the differences that led their nations to war, they were all human beings. It's only a shame that we can't, as a global community, agree to repeat this miracle every year. No matter the reason behind the war, we're all human and we all deserve the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy such a day. This is one of the only things that gives me any appreciation for Christmas anymore. These guys were mortal enemies at the time but they offered to stop everything out of respect for Christmas. At the risk of sounding cliche, God rest these merry Gentlemen,\.
Private Baldrick: Remember the football match? Captain Blackadder: Remember it - how could I forget it - I was *never* offside! I could not *believe* that decision.
No, no it was not, because it happened between relatively few units in only the British Army which in December 1914 was still small. The 1914 Christmas Truce has been overblown in both directions, first by those who try to claim it never happened at all, and second by those who make it out to be a much larger thing than it actually was. BOTH are wrong. The French almost universally were NOT interested in a Christmas Truce unless it involved the Germans getting the hell out of French Territory, fighting DID occur on Christmas day 1914, and men DID die. This thing needs to be taken into the proper context, things that Simon et al appear to be incapable of doing, something I have noticed of the other channels he is the face of.
One of grandpa's war buddies told a story about his patrol unit finding some very drunk Charlie's. They were sitting around a small fire drinking a very strong homemade liquor. One of them shouted a jarbled greeting. "Hey! Americans! Have a drink, have a laugh. We're not that different." Something like this in broken English. His unit kept their distance did accept a bottle of the liquor (that's how he knew it was so strong) and just watched the soldiers drink themselves to a stupor. They just left the passed out soldiers laying around their dying fire and moved on. But the line about not being that different stuck with him. He started to see these intense, hard fighting, never give up, take as many as you can people...as humans. He said it affected him for the remainder of his tour and even to this day.
"Silence! Oh, I remember the silence On a cold winter day After many months on the battlefield And we were used to the violence Then all the cannons went silent And the snow fell Voices sang to me from no man's land"
I always just think... of all the insane amount of young man brought up to fight - there must have been ONE guy, on ANY side - who fought from day one, to the final day. That shit must have been, seeing the whole war...
Suggestion for a similar topic: just before Berlin was captured by the allies at the end of WW2, the inhabtants went crazy: some commited suicide, some partied as if there were no tomorrow. I am sure there must be interesting stories about this out there.
"Christmas 1915" by Celtic Thunder is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and one of the best retellings about the truce (even if they got the year wrong)
“Silent night, holy night, all was calm all ways bright; Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly piece” “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, schlaff in himmlischer ruh! Schlaff in himmlischer ruh!” An unofficial truce such as this, in the midst of one of the most brutal wars in human history is truly a Christmas miracle. Unfortunately, it could not stay the hands of death and destruction forever.
Silence
Oh, I remember the silence
On a cold winter day
After many months on the battlefield
And we were used to the violence
Then all the cannons went silent
And the snow fell
Voices sang to me from no man’s land
We are all, we are all, we are all, we are all friends
And today we’re all brothers
Tonight we’re all friends
A moment of peace in a war that never ends
Today we’re all brothers
We drink and unite
Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white
Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night
Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes
A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home
It seems i have found another fan a band whos heavy metal is only the best from north
Truly beautiful song.

Knowing how history is often formed, I've always assumed it was a loose kick around, maybe even a half serious match.
Another channel by Simon Whistler? It’s a CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!
Damn it Simon, slow down! I'm running out of hours in the day to binge all your channels
Thank you for this Simon, I had just asked about this moment in history in a previous vid you made. Happy Christmas!
Yeah, I wouldn't think they would have an organized match, but just a pick up game, just kicking a ball around. Idk. The whole story is incredibly beautiful.
My favorite Christmas movie is Joyuex Noel. I always love hearing this story.
Just watched your video on the Spanish empire, clicked on the Russian Empire video, where you had plugged this channel. Congratulations on yet another channel, Simon 😎
If i had a penny for everytime Simon started a story with "It was at the beging of 1914 " lmao
"It is not the war that is glorious, but the peace."
Morris and Simon, 2021
A great Christmas story. Liking the new channel, Factboi.
Merry Christmas, Whistler. Thanks for all your hard work over all these years.
That moment was a true Christmas miracle.
A mere 52 years later, the Brits and Germans played a football match that was quite controversial in and of itself.
Wow - almost left the video early. Thankfully, I stayed to the end. Your analysis was perfect.
For one brief, shining moment ….
"Silence! Oh, I remember the silence
On a cold winter day
After many months on the battlefield
And we were used to the violence
Then all the cannons went silent
And the snow fell
Voices sang to me from no man's land"
Funniest German accent statement Simon. I challenge you to do Aussie accent. Great video
Simon's take over of UA-cam continues... And hello fellow OGBB's.
"Christmas 1915" by Celtic Thunder is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and one of the best retellings about the truce (even if they got the year wrong)
listen to Christmas Truce by Sabaton
3:18 "cigarettes too damp to light" ALCOHOLISM HERE I COME!
@@SamlSchulze1104 🤦♀️
Always a heartwarming tale🎄
Realising that your enemy's are just soldiers too and making peace with him for a day now thats soldiering
This channel is growing fast! It was at like 2k subs a few days ago
"usual diet", second video :) not complaining, actually I'm happy I know battles are coming
Imagine if the politicians held a war and the soldiers just said “no”….
If only the War had been just that:
a football match between the Kaiser and Kitchner!
When men tire of senseless killing, the inner child cries out for some semblance of peace. The Christmas truce was once such event
When tv sucks there's always a whistler binge ^_^
There needs to be a national bulletin when Simon starts a new channel, I can't keep up lol
I think I follow all your channels ( hard to keep track ) but this is the best video yet 👍 great idea for a channel
I first found out about this in Paul McCartney's video clip for the song Pipes of Peace. A well produced slice of reality.
This is the channel I needed!
The story of the Christmas Truce is one of my favorites and obviously I'm not the only one.
I'm SO glad you decided to cover this!
It’s remarkable what happened, there is a film with Diane Kruger from 2006 about this called Merry Christmas.
“Silent night, holy night, all was calm all ways bright; Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly piece”
“Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, schlaff in himmlischer ruh! Schlaff in himmlischer ruh!”
An unofficial truce such as this, in the midst of one of the most brutal wars in human history is truly a Christmas miracle. Unfortunately, it could not stay the hands of death and destruction forever.
To me the important thing about the Christmas Truce is that without enemies, there can be on war.
No
I would love Simon to do one of his videos while doing his German impression the entire time, lol!
Amazing narration - well written and perfectly delivered!
Simon, the ugly sweater thing. Awesome 👌
Just when I thought I had enough of Simon's content he goes and makes another great channel
The drunk Scot waking up in the wrong trench 😂 legend
One day in which the Prince of Peace Reigned in the Hearts of Men.
it's so heartening that despite the horrible war raging that the soldiers found the humanity of the other side
Great new channel Simon.
The best channel to come out of your recent flurry.
You gotta love the glee in simons eyes when he gets to break out his german accent
