      Good question. Are you working on slopes? What material?
      I prefer tires for the pure fact that guys are usually going to tear up tracks quicker spinning in the cut
      Tires are also better for compaction when rolling in your lifts

      quad tracks, you can open the front and back gates on those pans otw back to get loaded and scrape your haul roads, they have enough ass to where they'll cut like a dozer versus just sliding across hard spots when you get to them

    Quick note, the MTS tractors are actually built by Versatile, then MTS adapts them to pull scrapers, as well as dropping a CAT engine in them. If you look up a Versatile 600 Delta Track, you'll see that they look nearly identical.

      Actually mts builds the back half of the tractor before shipping it up to buhler Canada (parent company of versatile) where the tractor is assembled. The undercarriage is specific to mts (but built by camso just like everyone else’s undercarriages) at this point the cab and diffs are still the same but almost every major component has been altered/redesigned by MTS for their own needs. The end goal is to have the tractor built 100% by mts at their headquarters in Iowa including undercarriages but you have to start somewhere.
      Not too many tractor companies are starting up in the 21st century I give them props for how far they’ve come since the 3550 first came out in 2015.

    I still prefer excavator/loader and haul truck and dozer in the fill. But I'm of the mind that if the jobsite can allow for it, 777 haul trucks are a great middle ground in terms of payload (101.1 tons) and turn around time (of course, that's depending on the operator at the controls) compared to scrapers (the 657 only has a bowl payload of 52 tons brw). Dont get me wrong, scrapers have their place, but I find the fact that theres usually a good amount of scrapers constantly down more than haul trucks (old and new), and one of his videos with Ames Construction proved my point with the number of scrapers down for one thing or the other.
    So, I see scrapers as a nasty money pit. Not so much the tractor/articulated pulling a pan or two. Scrapers are a decent tool for contouring but dozers and graders are usually better at that.

  • @bishopcorva
    @bishopcorva 2 роки тому +8

    Pan scrapers are fine pieces no doubt and can move gobs of dirt, and depending on how packed it is, even gravel or river drop stone. Though they do struggle in wet clay or areas with random boulder and rock ledges.
    But anyway, it's not about what's better, it's more about what is best for the area and conditions. Sometimes it's a scraper, sometimes it's excavators and trucks. Both are neato and have the tendency to make some folks just want to stop whatever they are doing and just watch them bounce by.

    • @mackenziepeek9317
      @mackenziepeek9317 2 роки тому +2

      This right here. Our company has so many different ways to move dirt. Like you said what's best for area and conditions. Sometimes it's haul trucks sometimes it's a tractor and a scraper. We also have one of those tractor trailer scrapers from cat and some twin drive scrapers for the really hard packed clay job sites. Having the big cat powered tractor trailer with a large pan trailer and the ability to through a twin drive behind it and push really easy through hard packed dirt. In the really wet stuff haul trucks all day

      @@mackenziepeek9317 Lol. We use wheeled tractors and 1233's in Kentucky. Dunno how much you know about Kentucky's geology, but it's pretty much all clay. Lot of bentonite, flint clay, with some fuller's earth mixed in just for good measure. Not much topsoil anywhere other than the river delta areas that flooded historically. It's a hard pull every cut. A push tractor is pretty much a must on every job. Still faster than a rock truck though. You get four or five good operators in the cut with pans you'll still outwork an excavator and haul truck, plus you only need one operator for the tractor. If the haul truck was self loading we'd probably use those, but anymore you're lucky to get the people to show up that you have.

    Aaron, i have to disagree with your assessment of the quad track on track vs tires and here's why: Every farmer that i heard taking about a quad track say that the tracks are no good on the soft and/or muddy surface cause they have no traction. That's why i'm saying that tires would be the better option if you are working in a soft/muddy surface. Great video anyway and have a good one!

      What may work in the agriculture world doesn't always transfer over to the construction world. Wet dirt for us in construction is usually clay, (at least here in the south) so tracks are way better. But wet dirt for farmers may be undisturbed soil usually thick topsoil which I could understand why tracks could be a bad thing in that circumstance. I say all that to simply say I do agree with him saying the tracks are better, in our line of work.

    I think that the affirmation that "scrapers are better" has its limits. I live in Canada. If there's one thing that Canada has a lot of, its rock, and it is some of the hardest rock on earth. Unless you live in a valley, chances are that you can dig 4 feet and find bedrock. In the valleys, the soil has a tendency to have boulders interspersed in the soil layers that were left there by erosion and glaciers. There's just so much rock everywhere that you would struggle to get any work done at all with a scrapper.

    Have to somewhat disagree with the quad track reference and when I say someone disagrees I’m about half with you.
    Now I’m speaking in the farming industry. we run to STX cases and one John Deere 9 RX
    When it gets somewhat muddy not a total mess those tracks create a lot of compaction issues. Especially during planting season that’s when you don’t want to compact they create a hard cap on top that rubber tires just do not.
    But one thing you also mentioned that rings true in farming also is speed in low traction environments. We can cultivate and/or plant probably at about 1.6 to 1.8 miles an hour faster on tracks then you can on rubber.
    We’ve had our machines for about three years and that’s here in Texas so we do have a little more sand issue than most people do and the cost to replace the rubber belt is pretty comparable to dual wheels but our run time seems to be only about 70% on the tracks compared to rubber as far as lifespan of probably 14 to 1600hr of use.
    I would be curious to know what they are getting on those quad tracks you filmed on the undercarriage and rubber bands in hours before replacement

    • @troyverburg9600
      @troyverburg9600 2 роки тому

      My very limited experience with rubber tracks is that they are for soft conditions, but not muddy conditions, and that they don't work in slick clay, or rocky ground at all. Would you say that's correct?
      I'm surprised you have compaction issues with tracks when the ground is wet. Do you mean that you get kind of a "glaze" on the surface, and not so much compacted?
      Thanks for sharing, it's interesting to see what people are experiencing in different conditions with different machines.

      14 to 1600 hrs of use on tires before replacement?? We bought a new tractor, ran it two years farming and then put new tires on the tractor and mounted the old tires on it with band duals. 29 years later, we sold the tractor with a little over 10,000 hours on it and still running those same tires. We did not run the tractor on pavement very much.

They produce much better compaction and way better traction on side slopes, just to name a couple advantages. Tracks have some advantages too but nothing real critical to site work.

      If the material isn't super hard packed clay you can cover ground faster in a tractor and pull behind pan vs a traditional scraper. If you get into really hard dirt the regular scrap having the ability to push and pull with 2 of them will walk circles around the tractor and scraper since it has more push pull power

    Totally false about the quad tracks when it gets wet out!!!!! ANY RUBBER TRACK MACHINE IS WORTHLESS WHEN IT GETS WET OUT! They will just sit on top and spin. The quads are a little better than the t track machines. But the rubber tire machines can dig through the wet greasy stuff and find nicer material to bite into. If they are having trouble with that case getting traction then it's operator error not locking the diffs before making a pull. Now the newer case tractors, say 2020 and newer have auto diff lock. Which works pretty good bc you don't have to worry about it.
