Hello! This looks very DIGGITY DOPE! I love random tools!
Also, as wood wood worker, (and because you asked) I must say something(s) about lathe-ing. (Yes, wood-turning is the right term.)
•Yes, sharpen those! They look to be almost the right proportions (to the size of the piece, not the lathe) and should work fairly well. Adding a small divot just behind the cutting edge will make them perform better, but they seem quite thin. Most lathe chisels are thicker. The shape of the cutting head makes a BIG difference. They gave you a cheap set of carving blades, not lathe chisels.
•Move that tool rest almost uncomfortably close to the piece. (Flip it around maybe?) This makes much less chatter and far less likelyhopd of catching your tool and throwing it in some random direction. (Generally bad)
•It seems counter-intuative, but for desnser materials, you actually speed up the lathe, the fastest setting would be better!
Faster spin = smaller chips. Very gentle pressure is important because you are still going through a lot of material. (relatively speaking)
•Angle your chisel slightly above the center of the piece, this makes sure the cutting edge is meeting the wood at the right angle. (Angle the handle down, not the cutting edge, and only abt 10°-15°)
•The curved chisel will astound you with how much material it can take away if you tilt the curve sideways. Twisting, like a screwdriver, just a little. This means as you get closer, you want the curve to meet the wood near the top of your curve, and sweep downward. This also requires angling your tool (top down view) somewhere between 80°-60°.
Recap, it's handle is down, and slightly off to the side, and the top of the C shape makes contact first.
Difficult to explain but looking up some quick videos of people using larger lathes and you can see what I mean. It's the same science, just smaller.
Also WHERE DO I GET ONE OF THESE? THIS IS GREAT!

OMG such wonderful information. I'm going to need to print this out!! My phone does not do this justice!
I think I linked where you can get these in the description, but if you Google mini lathe or bead lathe some should pop up!

its not designed for materials over 13 mm, its works fine on small stuff like lace bobbins etc but 1 inch wood its too big, the speed is too fast, you should use a square the tail stock with a square and use decent chisels for wood turning, know they are cheap but they do work with small wood and good chisel and bolt the thing down!

Sometimes it's painted blue, sometimes black, sometimes grey. The see-through one is the only one that would have required different tooling at the factory. Maybe that one is different, but it looks like the exact same hardware as the rest, other than the perspex cover

Since its direct drive I suspect the motor won't last long given the sideways pressure its going to experience. Might be good for shaping balsa wood model nose cones but anything heavier (i.e. the pine being used here) will be a problem in the long run. Probably better to come up with a stand to clamp down a real drill and provide a dead center & tool rest. I think I've seen this done. Still would have the same issue put given a power drill would have a sturdier motor / bearings could last a bit longer.

I made one bathroom lamp pull so far. It's a $40 lamp pull 😂
If I make another it will be $20... Then another, eventually I will break even and have several lifetimes worth of cord pulls 😂

If it arrives broken, as mine did, you will be asked to ship it back to China at your cost, which was the same amount as the refund, you loose !!

Yeah, I try to order from sellers that say they are in the UK, than when they try that trick eBay / PayPal steps in.

Follow these instructions carefully: Pick up the 'unit', move over towards your refuse area, and drop the entire thing in the bin, before you hurt yourself with it, because it's s.h.*.t and very dangerous.

For a Chinese power tool, I'd say it was only moderately dangerous. The motor clearly has a decent amount of torque, but once it's eaten your hand it'll soon stall and stop spinning. The contents of the PSU are probably more dangerous ;)

I use lathes quite a lot - I wouldn't go near that thing with full body armour and a crash helmet. The work piece is not held even remotely adequately, it looks about one micro -second away from being a highly efficient eye removal tool.

I use both flavours of lathes and I'd have a good play with that! Look at larger wood turning, especially bowl turning, and this is nothing in comparison. Definitely face shield and glasses required, but not scary in the least.

Your main problem is definitely going to be woefully dull tools, that's a given for that sort of import set. The *tools* included in my large wood lathe are every bit as fantastic in the QC department. An oilstone, some sewing machine oil and a UA-cam tutorial will fix that. Then, I'd start on some pine dowel, dirt cheap, soft and forgiving on tools.

I think you should get out more. The power of this thing will useless, and the turning torque next to nothing. I suppose you could sharpen some toothpicks / cocktail sticks if you need to. What a waste of time.
