Getting an emission test on your Honda or Acura doesn't have to be a drag. In this video, I'm going to cover 3 procedures to pass a smog test.
6 Step Drive Cycle Honda Cycle
Cold Start with ¼ - ¾ gas on level ground, no codes
Step 1. Start the engine and keep the car idle for 20 seconds. Don’t touch the accelerator.
Step 2: Rev the engine to 2000 RPM for 3 minutes. The temperature should be at 1/3 of the scale or higher.
Step 3: Idle for 20 seconds again.
Step 4: Go to a highway/freeway and drive between a constant speed 50-60mph for 20 minutes. You should be in D or 5th/6th gear. Don’t utilize cruise control. At some point in the journey, coast for 90 seconds (remove foot off the accelerator).
Step 5: Conduct city driving for 10 minutes, and during this time, perform some coasting.
Step 6: Once completed, let the vehicle turn off and sit for 30 minutes with the engine off.
Please watch video for all the Honda / Acura drive test as the differ for certain vehicles

You're a life saver. Thank you so much. I finally passed SMOG test. It's been a crazy month trying to make my O2 and Evap ready after I disconnected the battery when I returned back my stock intake. Been driving for 400 miles but still couldn't make my OBD2 ready. I had no idea that there's a certain drive cycle.
I followed your instructions and BOOM! After 20 mins, everything's ready. Went directly to SMOG center and passed.
Thank you again. I appreciate your effort explaining and helping others.
    GOD BLESS YOU

Thank you, Thank you and Thank you!!! For making this video. I have A 2006 Honda Civic Coupe EX model that I purchased new which has always passed smog for the last 16 years with only 111K miles. I typically do all the maintenance, oil, spark plug, filters etc., so when I took it for smog check it failed due to the Catalyst not being ready. I hadn’t disconnected the battery so that wasn’t the reason for the failure. I ended up taking it to the Honda Dealer where I purchased the vehicle and after explaining the issue the technician plugged the OBDII and confirmed the same results as the smog test. He said they could perform the road test for $275.00 but could not guarantee that it would pass smog. There were no error codes or any other problem with the car. So, came to YT to research the fix and came across a number of videos. However, your video was the most comprehensive with instructions and steps to remedy. I followed your instructions as closely as possible with the coasting at 20 mph being the most difficult due to traffic on the 10 fwy in the San Gabriel Valley. Did the drive 2X in opposite directions and at the end of the drive, I turned the ignition off, turned on and checked the engine light. The light did not blink 5 times, it stayed on briefly then turned off. I new then it was ready to pass smog so went directly to same smog station and sure enough it passed smog. Again, thank you so much for all the great information, I truly and gratefully appreciate it. You have a new subscriber!

Thank you!! I have a 2010 Honda Fit and I just needed the Catalytic Converter Monitor to be Ok/Ready for my smog test. I did the 2nd option(6 step cycle drive). I used an OBD2 Scanner while driving. I started around 5 am and took a Toll Road for the highway portion(I'm in California). When it came time to decelerate I decided to try to reach 20MPH and I was able to by going a little longer than 90 seconds. I got onto the shoulder, with my hazards, towards the end. By the time I finished the 20-minute drive( I tried to stay at 55MPH - No cruise control) the CCM was ready! I was shocked but still decided to do the city driving just to be safe. After the 10 minutes, I only shut the engine off for 5 minutes. I checked the codes again and the CCM was still OK. So I drove home instead of waiting the 30 minutes with the engine off. Passed Smog Test later in the morning!

@@RANDOMFIX i have tried multiple times and nothing. my car is a 2015 with 37, 200 miles, so not driven a ton. I took it back to the smog tech today and he says weak CV and he has a part for $250. I asked him if it was a bandaid or a real fix. He said lets just worry about this month and getting in passed. I asked if he could check the CV and he said no, so I asked him if a dealership can. He said yes. This is very frustrating to me, so I made the appointment with the dealership. Yes, they are expensive, but peace of mind cost money. I thank Jesus I have a job. It is crazy how we live in a society that you own nothing and we go around like we do! We do not own our homes, cars, property with no buildings....we don't even own our labor! We are a different kind of slave. We work only to have the government take our wages and spend them how they want and they get paid to steal from us. Both sides do it, but I will never vote for a democrat as long as a live! Summer grades of ga$, extreme emission standards, and taxes out the a$$ are the evidence of democrat run states!

I used the “3 minute warm up with MAX AC and rear defrost; 3 minutes @55-60mph, coast below 20mph; 5 minutes @60mph, coast to a complete stop” method. I did this two nights (early mornings) in a row. The first night, I may have screwed it up because there was some traffic on the freeway and I was forced to dip below 55 at one point. Second night I executed flawlessly. So I’m not sure if I could’ve done this with a single try or not.
Just a word of caution if you live in a busy place: use EXTREME CAUTION while executing these maneuvers. When coasting, turn on hazard lights to give some alert to cars behind you. Someone almost rear ended me on freeway. I know it sucks, but bite the bullet and wake up at 4am to do this. It’s the safest time to coast on a freeway.
*Also, use the check engine light to know if you succeeded. When turning key to “on “ position without starting engine, watch engine icon to see if it blinks five times before disappearing. If it blinks, you’re not ready for test yet. You want it to simply disappear after solid glow for around 15-20 seconds.
    Good luck everyone.

Hi John, your civic si sounds like a fun car and I honesty don't have an good guidance for your situation as it's hard enough to get the catalyst ready on a older car but when it's modded it whole other animal. I wish you the best but it sounds like you need to real catalyst.
Is that the only monitor that is incomplete? If so, check out the playlist on the channel just about incomplete catalyst monitors, it's worth a try before you have to crawl under your car to install a new catalyst. Best of luck

@@RANDOMFIX Thanks for your quick reply! I guess it was the change of battery. Today I found a section from my Honda's owner manual.
Prepare the vehicle for retesting by doing the following:
      1. Fill the gas tank to approximately 3/4 full.
      2. Park the vehicle and leave the engine off for six hours or more.
      3. Make sure the ambient temperature is between 40'F and 95'F (4'C and 35"C).
      4. Start the engine without touching the accelerator pedal, and let it idle for 20 seconds.
      5. Keep the vehicle in [P] (automatic transmission/CVT) or N (manual transmission). Increase the engine speed to 2,000 rpm, and hold it there for about
      three minutes.
      6. Let the engine idle with your foot off the accelerator for 20 seconds.
      7. Select a nearby, lightly traveled major highway where you can maintain a speed of 50 to 60 mph (80 to 97 km/h) for at least 20 minutes.
Drive on the highway in[D (automatic/CVT) or 5th (manual). Do not use cruise control.
When traffic allows, drive for 90 seconds without moving the accelerator pedal. (Vehicle speed may vary slightly; this is okay.)
If you cannot do this for a continuous 90 seconds because of traffic conditions, drive for at least 30 seconds, then repeat it two more times (for a total of 90 seconds).
      8. Drive in city/suburban traffic for at least 10 minutes. When traffic conditions allow, let the vehicle coast for several seconds without using the accelerator pedal or the brake pedal.
      9. Park the vehicle and leave the engine off for 30 minutes.
In order to get the CAT ready, which part(s) should I focus on?

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  Рік тому

Section 7, however as your vehicle gets older this becomes harder to complete. To help set the monitor faster with less effort I would start the vehicle and just let it idle for 20 minutes and then proceed to section 7.

And it’s old then there is pretty good chance it may need to replaced, only replace with oem o2 sensor. Also confirm the battery is great or near perfect. I show why in this video ua-cam.com/video/cV6NewPWo2E/v-deo.htmlsi=sdrkelS-E7Zpz0EH

These are impossible to do, you have to be on a racetrack. How are you going to coast from 65 to 20 in 90 seconds safely on a crowded freeway? My CRV slows to 25mph in about 45 seconds if I take my foot off the gas.
Where I live the closest freeway is a 30 minute drive away and the closest highway is a 45 minute drive. There are no streets near or around me long enough to even get up to 55.

Down shift or use the parking brake if it is hand operated. Use a incline to slow you down. I know now of this fun, trust me on that! Good luck

I went to get my 2005 Honda CR-V for a smog check, but I couldn't pass because of the OBDII not ready catalyst. The car only has 76,620 miles.

    • @RANDOMFIX
      @RANDOMFIX  2 роки тому +2

Marlon, even with low miles it doesn't not the catalyst is great condition. The catalyst needs to be in near ideal condition to set. However there some tricks, since this only unset monitor it will not too hard.
Here is the catalyst monitor inc playlist,
      ua-cam.com/play/PLDEbtVOPRC-h1BAzaWQ-6NSnmG0gwvgwP.html
and I would highly advise working on that high speed steady drive after the cr-v has had a nice long warm up cycle ( just let it idle for 20 minutes + and then drive @ highway speeds - make sure it doesn't over heat, so check all the fluid, also make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks if you find yourself not able to set this in after 2 or 3 attempts, check the rear oxygen sensor connector as well to make sure it clean and snug). You will also find some products that can help on the playlist.

Marlon, I suggest driving a little longer to have a chance of setting the catalytic monitor.
There are some inexpensive scanners that will alert when all the drive monitors are set. Basically it will stop beeping.
Here is a video about and I don't cover that feature but it works and will keep beeping until the monitor sets.

Keep me posted and please provide additional information about the vehicle and what caused the drive monitor data to be deleted.

Thorough video, you invited me from another drive cycle reset video. This is ridiculous. What is the People's Republic of CA doing to us? So to ensure our newer vehicle (post 2000) isn't polluting, we gotta burn 20-40 gal of gas and time and pay our biannual tax to prove that we aren't emitting? I'm riding my bike.

Often, a failed inspection is due to system monitors not being ready.
There are two types of monitors in a vehicle:
      Three continuous monitors:
      Fuel System Monitor
      Comprehensive Component Monitor
      Misfire Monitor
A varying number of non-continuous monitors including:
      Catalytic converter efficiency monitor
      Evaporative system monitor
      EGR
      Oxygen sensors
      and more.

These monitors perform checks on specific emission-control related systems. They have three states:
      Ready
      Not Ready
      Unsupported

A vehicle of model year 1996-2000 is permitted to have a maximum of two non-continuous monitors not ready. Vehicles of model year 2001 and newer are only permitted to have one non-continuous monitor not ready. The three continuous monitors must all be ready in order to pass inspection.

I’ve been trying to complete a drive cycle! But I live in a canyon and by the time I get to where I can go on freeway, I’ve driven 10 miles at least! Plus traffic all night and day in my canyon. Plus traffic on freeway. Everyone in so California drive 65 or faster even in slow lane and rigs take up both slower lanes and sometimes block both lane. So….. How do I get around all this? I have a 2013 honda civic coupe and my smog guy cleared my rediness test to start a new driving cycle. Bought the obd2 reader….. never had any check engine lights on just dead battery a couple of months ago. Help🙏🙏🙏🙏🥹
