I'm curious about the tool kit you used to get the torx\star driver you used to open the case. I have the XPS 15 and need to open it up. But, with the XPS' super small torx\star drive screw heads, the smallest torx bit I have is a fraction too big for them. You glossed over the toolkit you used that had the correct driver. BTW: Until I open mine up and confirm it, I was completely unaware there was a 2nd nVME drive bay. That's a game changer.
I just got an HP X360 laptop after my old laptop was ruined by water. I didn't realize how small the hard drive was!!! I told my old one out of the ruined laptop and connected it with USB. I was excited to find that it works!!! Now I just need to do some work to change partitions and get rid of Windows on that hard drive.
There’s not going to be a difference with the speed of the ssd if the OS is still on the original m.2, the Samsung ssd is just going to act like a backup drive for data.
Thank you so much for this. I just got an XPS 15 with Core i7 and the 4K screen but 16GB ram on sale for $2k. I upgraded the RAM to 64GG for another $320, saving me about $700. Really appreciate it. Now to see if I can switch back to Windows after 3 years on Mac. And in terms of what to do with the old RAM, well 16 GB I may be able to get $50 or something for, but otherwise will use it for an art project. Lol
I think it would be cool if you made another video attempting to upgrade the 56 whr battery to the 86 whr battery found in the i7 versions of the machine
I save old ram sticks. When I sell/replace the laptop in the future I replace upgraded components with the original factory components unless I also want to replace the upgrades. This way, I keep my expensive upgraded drives/ram to use in the new laptop I just bought.
So just tu be sure. This puppy has two HD slots? One of them cones empty from the factory? So when you buy your XPS 15 with 512, that's one hard drive, which includes the OS?
Hey man such an awsome video, really really helpful. I have one question, is it possible to update the WiFi card with the base model and if so could you make a video on it. Anyway have a great day.
On some tech sites they state that the base i5 model is not modular (swappable RAM and SSD). Is this truly the case or is it some nonsense to lure people into buying the i7? Already big thanks to the responder!
Hi, Great Video, but please can you explain, is there a reason why you've chosen RAM with lower Specs)? You suggest a 2666 DDR4 Ram Kit, but according to DELLs standard, the original one are running at 2933. (So I would suggest to buy DDR4@3200). Please let us know :-) Thank you!
I wish that Apple (and even Dell to a lesser extent) would create more modular hardware - I mean not just RAM and Storage, but also being swap out the processor for something faster or putting in another graphics card would be a game-changer. These firms overcharge for all of their components / upgrades that the first company to release a top tier (XPS or Macbook quality) modular laptop would completely crush the competition.
Great Reviews! Can you please suggest how to cool down the new Dell XPS 15 2020 as I'm feeling a burning sensation on my left palm rest and left side keyboard while typing. Thank you.

Ok, So where are the speakers exactly??? In top grid or only at the bottom as in previous models? I can see 2 speakers on the side Also, i am very curious about new speakers if they are same garbage as on previous models. I Have had 3 models - 9550, 9560, and 9570 which I currently have. In all of them I had to replace speakers with new ones. Usually left speaker dies and starts to rattle if you listen on full volume for 5 - 10 minutes. On my 9570 i have replaced one time the speakers. And a week ago as I turned on full volume the left speaker started to rattle again. When I had 9560 model I checked the broken speaker and it turned out the coil was not glued to membrane. That is why the speaker rattles, But what is strange it always happens with the left speaker. So 3 generations they use garbage speakers. Just so curious if the 2020 model is the same?

0:15 lol I'm the same way! I treat all of my expensive stuff like gold. I treat it too good some times
I went and got a Dell G5 Ryzen setup in the end. Crazy how gaming laptops are cheaper and better specced than editing laptops...
Yeah I’ve got a G3 for my gaming rig and it’s pretty darn powerful and didn’t cost that much.
@@TheEverydayDad The only annoyance is the RAM only being 16GB but I think that can be upgraded too.
Yeah if this XPS can be upgraded I would be pretty confident the gaming laptop can too 👍
@@TheEverydayDad Can't wait for it to get here now! My useage will be Luminar, Topaz Denoise and Resolve so should be much better than my 43% rated (at rate my PC) all in one PC 😂😂
64GB not crazy at all when using your laptop for running lots of sample-based virtual MIDI instruments in live performance...THANK YOU for this...exactly the tutorial I needed!
I could be wrong, but you should always disconnect the battery regardless, as most laptops (unless you shutdown with a key-combo) have a form of soft-powerdown (especially since using soft-power buttons), so I imagine there is still power to the board.
What's your DIY kit? Where did you get it? Thanks for the video
how are you going to upgrade the cpu and gpu?
tips: put your screw on fixit cover for not losing it. The cover has grids to separates different type of screws
Great video. Could you please provide links to where you got ssd screws and thermal pad and thanks.
Did he use crucial ram 64gb with 2666 mt/s or 3200 mt/s?
Fantastic video. Before i leap, i have to ask. Dell only has a max of 32 GB Ram configured for the xPS to buy at their site , but we can put in a total of 64GB?
XPS 9500 has a max of 64GB in the specs
Great job! I first saw your videos back when I was looking at the DJI Spark. Haven't really followed you (my bad), but then here I am researching the Dell XPS 15 as it is time to upgrade my 3 year old XPS 15. Love the upgrades to your whole setup! Keep up the great work!
If the 10th gen cpu isn’t so important, I just got the version with the 9th gen i7, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd, 4K OLED screen, for $1610 on sale locally. Check those deals.
I JUST BOUGHT IT!! SO EXCITED! best laptop ill ever have bought. I've only bought cheaper options but now I want to start video editing, now is the time to invest
Is it possible to upgrade the battery to the 87wh one which is in the more expensive models?
I'm curious about the tool kit you used to get the torx\star driver you used to open the case. I have the XPS 15 and need to open it up. But, with the XPS' super small torx\star drive screw heads, the smallest torx bit I have is a fraction too big for them. You glossed over the toolkit you used that had the correct driver. BTW: Until I open mine up and confirm it, I was completely unaware there was a 2nd nVME drive bay. That's a game changer.
I would of removed the factory ssd and instead installed two samsung evo's and set them up raid-0.
what's the benefit of that?
@@TheJeonyboy Way faster boot times
How to do it? How do you transfer the stuff to the evo plus? And run it raid 0?
Battery can be upgraded from 59WHr to 86Whr on base model?
I just got an HP X360 laptop after my old laptop was ruined by water. I didn't realize how small the hard drive was!!! I told my old one out of the ruined laptop and connected it with USB. I was excited to find that it works!!! Now I just need to do some work to change partitions and get rid of Windows on that hard drive.
How long will it take for laptops to be customizable like PCs?
Graphic, processor, motherboard etc... Etc..😎
never unless they start getting THICC again
just upgraded mine today! i now have a 2 1tb 970 evo's in the laptop with 16gb of ram (preinstalled ram, i got the 1650ti version)
There’s not going to be a difference with the speed of the ssd if the OS is still on the original m.2, the Samsung ssd is just going to act like a backup drive for data.
How do you transfer the OS to the new Evo SSD?
You can use the spare ram as a cutter on your keychain. Those gold tips are good for slicing tape on boxes :)
Lol
@The Everyday Dad Where did you find the screw for the SSD? Do you know the size for it?
M2*2
I think it would be cool if you made another video attempting to upgrade the 56 whr battery to the 86 whr battery found in the i7 versions of the machine
Thanks. Fun vid. I'm curious what the performance would have been with 16 GB an 32 GB of RAM as I might actually do those upgrades. Cheers.
Is the cpu soldered?
Does it support coreboot? If not, are the wifi adapters whitelisted? Are the extended battery options available?
I save old ram sticks. When I sell/replace the laptop in the future I replace upgraded components with the original factory components unless I also want to replace the upgrades. This way, I keep my expensive upgraded drives/ram to use in the new laptop I just bought.
So just tu be sure. This puppy has two HD slots? One of them cones empty from the factory? So when you buy your XPS 15 with 512, that's one hard drive, which includes the OS?
Hey man such an awsome video, really really helpful.
I have one question, is it possible to update the WiFi card with the base model and if so could you make a video on it.
I tried with other videos but my model looks a little from the other xps I have seen on UA-cam. My mine looks exactly like yours.
I was just thinking it might not be possible to change.
Anyway have a great day.
I recently found your channel and really like your style! Informative and entertaining:) Great job 👍
I want to upgrade my cpu too can i do that or no?
How has the battery life been? From what I see the base model has a smaller battery than the more expensive ones
Would this be a good laptop for music production?
Great Reviews! Can you please suggest how to cool down the new Dell XPS 15 2020 as I'm feeling a burning sensation on my left palm rest and left side keyboard while typing. Thank you.
Hey everyday dad. How are you? Today i received my new xps 15 (base model too!) and i wanted to ask you something real quick. So, i bought additional warranty (3 yrs) and i wanted to know if by upgrading the computer (same as you) would that mean that i would void the warranty. Do you know? Also bought it directly from Dell.
9:27 darn that fan noise
Great video. Was able to upgrade my 9500 to 1TB SSD after watching this. You are right taking off the bottom part was a pain, cut open my fingers. Also had some sparks fly when I tried to remove the battery power. But all is well now. :)
Nice video. When upgrading Ram do you need 2 cards of the same size or for example can I put a 32gb with an 8gb to have a total of 40gb?
It would be a great test if you do After Effects. Because AE is a RAM dependent program. With the amount of RAM that you have, I wanna see the difference between 16gb and 64gb. I have macbook, and been watching your videos and making me want to switch XPS because of you. Please do an After Effects test. Love you!
I bought an Alienware laptop back in 2012 and was able to do this with it back then. I used that thing for 8 years lightning fast until the mother board crapped out and I was still able to get $250 when I sold it on craigslist.
10:29 You mentioned CPU upgrade?? Isn't the cpu fixed on the chipset??
I think he meant upgrading the cpu when buying the base model so instead of 6 cores buy 8 cores.
which would be a compatible 32 GB RAM kit for this laptop? i tried changing the crucial 64 GB to crucial 32 GB but it shows 2-3 options. how do I know which 32 GB Ram Kit is better and compatible?
EXCELLENT VIDEO - what is toolkit unitized in this procure to remove back panel of XPS laptop.
Subscribed. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Such a joy to watch when things so well. Like a successful operation.
It would also be nice to see how you change the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU
The link on here to the RAM you bought seems for me to go one that's 2666 Mhz whereas I thought from the specs that the XPS uses 2933 Mhz RAM - Can you confirm what you used please?
I'm trying to order the XPS17 today, and I found your channel! The specs on the $2500 model are identical with the $1300 more expensive top level model, the only difference being the RAM and hard drive.... I'll be adding a 64GB Memory kit, and 2 TB drive to the less expensive version, save $594 and in the process have much better memory and a much faster SSD! Thanks for a great video!
Hey man....I was gonna try this too......did the 2TB SSD work??
Can you tell us what type of additional screw is needed ? Thanks
Is it cheaper to
1. Buy the cheapest model *with 4k touch display, 86Watt Battery, then upgrade the RAM, CPU, SSD to its max
Or
2. Buy the top specced model and upgrade to the max?
You wouldn't be able to upgrade the CPU. Get the processor you want. RAM and Storage can be upgraded.
Awesome upgrade! But, don't you think, it gonna void the warranty of the laptop???
Looks like you put slower 2666MHz on your xps, instead of 2933MHz.
Does any DDR4-2933MHz work on xps 15? Curious to know which 2933 MHz ram to buy.
I have the same question. I found Corsair vengeance 3000 ram and wondering if it'll work even with the 2933 max?
@@galileo228 Is it possible you guys are confusing MT/s vs MHz? Not sure, just noticed that on the Amazon listing for the memory it uses units of MT/s. Based on quick googling, MT/s is measurement of "effective" transfer rate, so maybe there's some overhead and 2666 MT/s is the same as 2933 MHz.
Just the video I wanted to see. I was wondering if this laptop could be upgraded to 64gb of RAM and not "only" 32gb as their high-end model. THANKS!
"And I can have a 1000 chrome tabs opened. "
You should seriously give Firefox a try.
Make it for XPS 17 as well please
Thanks again, Dad!. I'm going to be purchasing the i7 8core variant with base RAM and SSD with the intention to upgrade them as required. Primary use is business, secondary... well.. more business. Keep up the great videos!
Nice video. This is really helpful as I’m planning to buy a Dell XPS 15 base model. Question ; Will the warranty be voided when RAM and SSD is upgraded in the Dell xps 9500?
So with the upgrades how does this compare to your Mac?
If you Upgrade the RAM and the SSD in a Laptop, should you do it before turning on the Laptop for the First time or after you made the first setup?
does it have the coil whine problem? how is the noise levels on this laptop ? that is really an important thing with those laptops
Ok, So where are the speakers exactly??? In top grid or only at the bottom as in previous models? I can see 2 speakers on the side
Also, i am very curious about new speakers if they are same garbage as on previous models.
Are all the dell xps 15 2020 upgradable ??
Yo I could really use those 3:49 "cool things you can do with ram that you don't need any more" comments right now, LOL
Can you edit 6k Blackmagic files on it?
Have you experienced any problems at all with the battery, touchpad, overheat, HDMI plugging into a tv, etc.?
This is great to know how simple to upgrade this laptop. Is the back panel from aluminium?
Yep thanks for doing this video - I did the exact same upgrade, did 64 GB ram, WD Black SN850 1TB NVME and could not be happier. if you are considering the wifi 6e card replacement being described online and in UA-cam it wont work because the killer chip is soddered to the board and looks nothing like the one being shown in any of the videos.
