      Ink
      So you see extremely colorful peacock jumping spiders on a regular basis where you live? We primarily have 'bold jumping spiders' here. They are all black. But they typically do a pretty good job of staying out of sight most of the time. I can work outside, surrounded by flowers and shrubs and houses, and a small patch of trees, and not see one except maybe 1 out of 3 days.

    Excellent video. Clear and concise explanation from an expert who knows how to teach, and video taken by a professional or very good amateur. I would only add two things- a warning about ticks and Lyme disease (among other diseases) which is part of the reason you wear long pants and tuck your cuffs into your boots, and maybe an explanation of the data you're writing. The location, lat/lon and date are self explanatory. The numbering system seems to be the 2 digit year followed by the incremented location number. At the bottom it seems to be the researchers' initials- maybe research assistants there helping you? The 650 m el. stumped me for a minute until I realized it was meters of elevation. Looks like you were walking down the hill in Malaysia. (put the coordinates into google maps and take a look at where he was, people- pretty cool). Then there's a percentage in parentheses. Is that the relative humidity? You have it on the typed slip but not on your notes. Thanks for the vid.

    Me collecting: OH MY GOSH THERE'S A JUMPING SPIDER
    Jumping spider: You'll never catch me alive, bub!!
    I just started studying Salticidae here in Brazil, before that I was studying spiders in general, my colleagues at the lab tend to collect directly into alcohol. I was heartbroken the first time I went collecting with them, so I started to look for alternatives for this and this video helped me realize that one of my initial ideas is very much effective. I just need different vials!

    • @aubrey756
      @aubrey756 3 роки тому +1

      Have you found a good way to study them without euthanizing them?

    • @wedneymoyses
      @wedneymoyses 3 роки тому +1

      @@aubrey756 not yet, but I'm working on the samples we had on the lab already, so fortunately I don't need to euthanize any more of them. After my undergraduate thesis is complete, I'll start looking into their behavior bit by bit and then I won't be having to euthanize anymore. And I don't know if there's ever going to be any alternatives for this when the research is taxonomic (because of the need to remove genitalia and or collect samples for genetics)...

    But besides that, does your betting method hurt them? Also, do your vials kill then? There are no air holes. Thanks.

    Great video thank you! Not sure how much success I would have in Scotland, but it might throw up other interesting critters :)

      Carl Mathiason I have caught jumping spiders at winter in really cold weather, they usually make nests under a dry dead trees bark be careful because you have to pull apart the nest and it easy to injure the spider in the nest if your not careful
