Has anyone thought of giving the man atop the car a paintball gun for crowd control. Will there be collateral damage? Yes. Of course there will be, but I believe the price is justifiable for the safety of the athletes.
99% time nothing happens. Uphill nothin really bad can happen anyway. Apart from that: The riders love the crowds. Imagine the feeling, you are going all out to win a grand tour up this hill against super strong opponents. You get this tunnel feeling through the crowds. It is incredibly motivating.

He was well respected in the pros but wasn't a real GC contender because he was more of a climbing domestique for his teams. What's unique about Horner is he was one of those rare riders that grimaced in the form of a smile. So it always looked like he was smiling from ear to ear when he was suffering like a dog on the mountain. Nevertheless this performance was one of the most epic rides in the history of professional cycling. Some still swear he was doped up to the gills but as with unusual feats there will always be skeptics. God I hate when the crowd blocks the road. I swung at them with my hands before. There were times when they'd purposefully close even the tiniest gap between me and the hometown boys (especially in Colombia.) Moto cops would swerve to open up a gap which was very cool of them to do.

Horner is terribly underrated. He is America’s all time best road cyclist hands down. Unfortunately, much of his success came after Armstrong’s stunk up the sport and many Americans turned away from cycling.

I've ridden this climb. It's bloody hard. In places, you'd be faster walking. I came to a grinding halt near the top and sat there trying to decide what to do; it's almost impossible to get going again on those gradients. As i sat there another rider came past and indicated that i was actually near the top and it got easier. That got me going and i was able to finish the climb.
So. The tests do exactly what they're intended to do. It keeps their levels within safe limits and allows them to dope a bit to level the playing filed.

@eljamo93, it's not gearing, it's Horner's constant standing @ cadence 60 to 70, with 42+ cm wide handlebars for increased leverage. Evidently he had perfected this technique over the previous 5 years or so, and got to the point where he could push a bigger gear for a longer time on steep grades. Compare with Nibali and Elissonde sitting most of the time, at much higher cadence

Horner won nothing before or after this dubious Vuelta victory. Definitely suspected of doping. Juan Jose Cobo was stripped of his 2011 Vuelta victory retrospectively for doping. How Horner is still dining out on this one is beyond me

If all the riders are doping then the sport is more fair, but if the authorities can bust on guy or one team and not another that’s not fair. I doubt all the riders dope. So it’s not fair. It’s way less fun to watch a race that’s not fair. And all those guys on the road when the racers are trying to pass each other. I would like under cover cyclists on electric bikes with cattle prods chasing the fans back and fined for those who don’t comply. Just have some deputized traffic cops and officials walking the sides of the road. Screw motorcycle cameras. A fix for that may be have every cyclist with a go pro or two or three on their bikes. They can probably make the bikes so light that they will still be the same weight with the cameras. Then the results for each day wouldn’t be known till later when all the footage was edited. But they could get some good commentators and boost the production value. I just don’t see the draw for the sport of cycling. Those fans suck. The motorcycles suck. The doping sucks. The camera work and commentary usually suck. I am way more interested in watching or participating in low key races. Though I do imagine from a fan’s perspective riding up the mountain with some liquor and getting drunk and yelling with all the other guys, then coasting down the hill after the race goes by would be a fun day.

This Vuelta was stolen from Nibali and I'm sure that between a few years everything will come out just like Juan Cobo, they just were at the end of their carriers so they had nothing to lose.
