Mt best memories are there on Mt. Baldy, riding to the top, sweating and suffering. Your final glory is when you finally stop and take a breather. Oh the pleasure of it.
I think Horner and Leipheimer remain one of 4 or so guys to do Mt Baldy under 23 minutes, and Pogacar set the course record in 2019, not that much faster than Horner. So yea Horner was some climber
It's difficult for me to understand when the commentators say the guy that's being paced is doing none of the work. With ramps of 9,10 or 15% you can bet Horner is working. Little to no drafting going on here. Chris may not be doing any of the pacemaking but he's definitely working his butt off.
You have no idea how sad the race staff is to lose that race. It was a magical week every year with all those crazy fans and all that California stuff in general. I can’t even watch a movie that was filmed in California anymore because it makes me sad when I see a road we traveled down or a town we went through.
Once you get past the village it’s pretty tough buddy. First time I went up there with a 23t cog and almost died standing for like 30 minutes at 50rpm. Think I still might have the fastest non Pro time on Strava.

This is worth a watch for the runners alone.
Long live Big Hair Superfan !
Watching this, it's not a big surprise that Horner wins the Vuelta two years later.

Too bad this race is no more. It gave us guys on the west coast a chance to see some real professional racing at its best.

forever? I believe it is coming back. One of my favorite races period! I love how it gives a great preview of future TDF winners.

mt baldy is my backyard
Baldy an easy climb. The real Baldy starts past the last chair lift all the way to the trail summit. Took my road bike all the way up in 2016.

Mt baldy village to ski lifts is when you reach true suffering. Those last 4-5 miles are harder than the whole ride to get there.
