As I said before art is a form that can't be rushed or misused. You can pay the best Artist in the world but if you rushed them or overload them with too many projects, that talent will never reach its true potential and that's the tragedy of crunch time. It's not just anime industry problem, look at the game industry like cyberpunk 2077 for example.
True, when it comes to the industry its a "quantity over quality" approach now and still they also want to maintain a bare minimum amount of quality as well, which is sorta messed up
@@ProbablyPretentious 6:43 anime name?
I find it funny that when mappa announces a new anime, there are a lot of comments saying that the studio should let the animators rest, as if Mappa was going to pay the employees to keep doing nothing. the problem is more the tight schedules
Well Most of the times when Mappa is in the production committee (they are mostly nowdays). They try to get a Really good schedule.
In short too many shows look good and as stupid as that sounds. That is not a good thing.
Yep
I’m hoping the rumours behind Chainsaw Man’s staff getting better treatment is true. If so and csm does blow up in terms of popularity, this might get Mappa to stop treating their employees like shit all the time.
Did you miss the first part of the video, there's no such thing as mappa employees, or at least there's no such thing as mappa animators because 95% of them are freelancers
Love ur vids man. I really love hearing and discussing the anime industry. That's why I downloaded Twitter, and then deleted it because it is twitter :) Overall, a studio name attached to an anime doesn't mean you know how it's gonna look unless that studio is Ufotable or Kyoani :)
Only mentally sane way to use Twitter ngl
Actually MAPPA is one of the highest well paying studio, the reason they seem to be "underpaying" animators is because they're freelancers, they paid them in advance to do a cut and it's either you give them what they paid for or create the most astonishing animation while also knowing you we're hired and paid for a measly let's say $60.
That's why most anime don't have much fluid or "well" animation, because there's just no point in making something good when you know you're being paid for something less.
Not to mention Japan's income tax is literally asking for half of your income as tax.
I don't recall mentioning mappa as the only underpaying studio, every studio, the whole industry for that matter underpays, maybe besides the studios that are primarily relied on in house staff (which mappa is not) most of mappa's flagship shows are animated by freelancers and the same can be said for most major shows by any studio, I wasn't talking about mappa in particular when I mentioned the word "underpaid"
@@ProbablyPretentious I accidentally commented on the wrong Vid💀
It almost has the same Thumbnail
More people should watch this video so all the misconceptions are cleared
You're right. Most anime watchers have no idea that 80% of the staff for high profile shows in the past 10 years are freelancers. I see people all the time saying that an anime looks good because a particular studio made it and I always want to point out that the same animator animated for a different studio as well. And as he said in the video this is true for every studio except for Ufotable and KyoAni. Studio Bones does have insane inhouse animators like Yutaka Nakamura but 90% of veteran key animators who work on Mob Psycho are freelancers. That's the reason MHA doesn't look as good anymore even though it's made by the same studio.
Sorry for the paragraph. I kinda started rambling.
Need a video on shaft's animations or rather their animators' works
At some point bet
This video has taught me a LOT of things !!
Great work !
Thanks man🙌🙏
It will be interesting to see what will happen to jjk S2 both jjk and CSM r made under mappa's 2nd production(for seshita) line and they both share lots of key animators (based on csm trailer) too and any guess for new director??
I don't know what they'll do for the director situation, it's hard to picture jjk without park, maybe mappa will go down the "when in doubt give it to hayashi" route lmao, or maybe park will still work on jjk but nothing else for mappa
@@ProbablyPretentious it's most likely will be someone new who never direct a series before and will be from 2nd department I'm betting on masataka akai or gosso and I hope sunghoo park do some key animation or atleast storyboard a ep
If park can be involved to some degree I don't see why he can't direct the whole thing, dude has a monster work ethic anyway
@@ProbablyPretentious it's confirmed by his Co worker(Yann le gall) at E&H production that he will not direct S2 though ( he can't say anymore than that)
Well ain't that unfortunate, I wasn't aware of that, well then my guess is as good as your's aside from park hopefully the team remains the same, I don't mind if someone from the animation team for jjk is given the role of director, hell I wouldn't mind a keichiro Watanabe directed jjk
What about Trigger? Is it also an exception to the rule like KyoAni and Ufotable or no?
I'm not that aware of the trigger landscape to be completely honest
@@ProbablyPretentious I just feel like they have a very distinguishable style to their works. Which makes me think that they have mostly in house staff? I don't know if my reasoning is very solid.
@@Eminvee that would make sense although it can also mean that they have good connections with specific animators as well, I don't know for sure
4:24 this is scary. I think China will surpass Japan in 2027 beyond, because there is increasing the numbers of animators, Blade of the Guardians, Dragon Raja and some others look already amazing.
I wonder if it really is important for veterans only to work on big projects. What if we give it to an amateur with some other better people so that we can increase the number of veterans(idk I'm stupid)
Lol thing is, they are called veterans because they have experience, just doing animation is one thing, leading a project/ serving as animation or episode director is another thing. You need a keen eye and sense for that which you only get after working on anime for a long time. Young animators start as just animators, watching the veterans and learning
i think there is going to be too much good manga to animate next year its going to be mess for animators even for freelancers
do you think that the next part of aot will have some veterans animators too ?
As far as I know most of the best looking scenes from season 4 are actually done by younger talent, q Kawa or Malcom wope or semi automatic, ig you can call Satoshi Sakai and hayashi himself as veterans but aside from them I don't really know, maybe imai returns, fingers crossed
Depends on if the freelancer are too busy with other projects or not. That the tragedy of an overworking industry, some times you have to make sacrifices to make other shows look good and aot been that victim since s3.
@@ProbablyPretentious I think Kojima was absent for 4 months at least despite his productivity as an animator I guess that's mean he's gonna be involved in the project with Imai if he returns and let's pray even for q qawa to returns too
With mushoku around the corner I wonder how much time q Kawa has, Kojima may definitely be more involved, although it may be another solo op project and only a couple of cuts on the main show, you never know
@@catlike9444 I think S3p1 was so good but the second cour was a stepdown and was full of problems
The production commite was the reason behind that
I love your video man
At first when I saw the title I said, hmmm another dumb take on anime industry.....
And istg when I watch it. It was both entertaining and Educative,Keep up the Good work 🔥
Thanks man, youtube apparently blocked your comment for some reason so I had to approve it lmao
1:10
That is the reason
He didn't work for aot season 4 cause he was working on jjk and mybe other mappa anime
I guess it's gonna be a bitter sweet situation of under valued stunning animations...
I don't think that only directors can bring in freelancers, I think that other parts of the staff can also bring in some very talented freelancers and the producer is also very important, it's even better when it's a passion project like Mob Psycho or Space Dandy. Chainsaw man also seems like a passion project, the staff in charge of the show is very good, one of the best I've seen in a while
I mean yea, directors, producers, all of them have a hand in getting people on board. And yea, I feel chainsawman is going to be monumental to both mappa and the industry based on the staff and their approach towards it
@@ProbablyPretentious I heard that Gosso is working on Chainsaw man, I'm very excited after watching his work on Ousama Ranking
0:40
No there now are mappa animators
Like tell me what other studio had kechiro watanabe working more than mappa? Jjk 2 seasons, chainsaw man and more all by keichio watanabe the man is just animating mappa shows for the most part
While people like hiroyuki Yamashita is a pierrot animator and always work with peirot animes
Well, at least this high demand of experienced animators will raise their salaries a litte
You said its pretty easy to find out "who" animated "what". Sure, how about you explain how? I would like to be able to see who worked in almost every specific scene of a different episode but I honestly have no clue how would you find an answer to that.
Also, the problem of few veterans in the industry would be solved by having a couple veterans teaching junior animators for a living every year instead of animating themselves. Each pro can make 2 new top tier workers in a year or less, rotate the animators who get to work as teachers (actually good living conditions and presumably better paid). By having the juniors train with multiple veterans you would fix the quality issue in a matter of 2-4 years. This workers are waay too pasionate and hardworking.
Use sakugabooru to figure out who did what, at least for the sakuga cuts, also it would be nice if the industry was that organized lmao
@@ProbablyPretentious Yeah, it would be truly beautiful.
There are much more in Falls than just csm , mob and bleach . There will be more industry elite freelancers attracted towards Bocchi the rock by cloverworks , Yama no susume by 8bit , Do it yourself by Pinejam. Even MHA doesn’t had a flim so far so MHA S6 will have its own share of freelancers itself .
The freelancers are constantly increasing in anime industry infact approx 70% animator’s are freelance itself.
The schedule is an important aspect even if all talented freelancers are participating in numerous shows . As long as the schedule is good then I think it won’t be a much of a problem.
Even though the freelancers themselves wants to work in a high profile project just to make their name in the industry. For ex that’s why you can see vercreek in attack on Titan and jjk but not in GOH . Big jump series projects are always a stepping stone for animator’s to make themselves known .
One more thing is sometimes studio should also be appreciated for the works even if it’s a name tag doesn’t mean they don’t have a CEO and employees working under them . Mostly Animation producers who are actually employees of the studio are responsible for bringing good freelancers and shows like wonder egg priority, one punch man , my dress up darling etc have a strong animation producers .
While that's true, as I mentioned in the video, freelancers, younger ones especially need veterans to spearhead projects that they work on, while new talented freelancers are popping up all over the place veterans are limited in number
Not too mention opm s3 and solo level😬
"Now yes, Mob Psycho 100 looks better than Jujutsu Kaisen (also grass is green)" bro you made me snort my energy drink from laughing
I don't use twitter, but are the tweet in the video real, no wonder Twitter is considered to be a toxic place sometimes
One of the tweets is literally by "faketweet" that one isn't real, the rest are all real, the reason I made one myself is cuz I couldn't find an appropriate tweet in time for the vid, but I have seen that argument being made before
@@ProbablyPretentious i have seen reddit posts where people get heated over bones vs mappa or something like that....where they argue about " this mappa show looks better then any bones show without mentioning any animators name... this is really dumb
@@ProbablyPretentious btw thanks for making these videos, i have learned a lot from you and kvin posts(sakugablog)... i would be one of those above mentioned people if it's not for you guys...thanks
And then One Punch Man happened
I just want good looking mechanical anime back. It's a dead art.
Man forgets Trigger every time 😭. Only KyoAni ans Ufo has style? Sure there aren't any studios..
Studio Orange;💀💀💀
Studio Trigger:🫀⚰️⚰️
Studio Ghibli: ⚰️⚰️⚰️
Studio Manglobe:😭😭😭
I was talking more about active studios, since that is relevant to the topic (too many good looking shows) that kinda rules ghibli and manglobe out, as for orange, they mainly produce fully cg shows, which makes them immune to the lack of veteran 2d animators but yea trigger sorta, although their ssss series looks fairly normal tbh
@@ProbablyPretentious the SSSS. series looks different due it being produced by Tsubaraya production who were the OG Gridman creators and it was a demanded style. Rest all are fairly similar except for the small Idol shows they did in the beginning days.
Why is everything in trouble?
It all started when I clicked on a vid "Minecraft is in trouble" followed by China is in trouble followed by Fish industry and now this? Why is my yt homepage filled with these vids?
Anyway, cool vid (have I been here before?)
Lmao youtube monetizing fear fr
@@ProbablyPretentious Oh!
"The anime industry is in trouble" me just looking at the animation disregarding everything else.
Realistically that's about all we the audience can do
@@ProbablyPretentious no I mean the animation in the video...
Nice video, I got a lot of knowledge from this
Very well researched video dude!
Banger video (haven't watched it yet)
Thanks man (watch it mf)
@@ProbablyPretentious screw you man (banger video just watched)
Are animators really underpaid if they are choosing to take these jobs, surely they are all making a value judgement and deciding the money is enough or they wouldn't have even taken the job. Also if anyone else was willing to pay them more i'm sure they would be working elsewhere.
Firstly no one is willing to pay more, so the options are limited, secondly it's verified that the average amount of money paid per cut of animation is at best around 40 us dollars, which is criminally low, considering some cuts may take weeks to produce
@@ProbablyPretentious It is low but their work is worth what people are willing to pay them, hence why i don't think they are being underpaid. Like I said if any other employer thought animators should be payed more then they would be getting payed more. That and the animators choose these positions, they themselves think that the money was worth the work or they wouldn't have even taken the job.
They take the job because the like working as animators that's all, the pay is criminally low and that's common knowledge, based on the hours of work the pay offered is nothing
@@ProbablyPretentious there wouldn't be any jobs as animators if you start making people pay more than what they want to. Everything here is completely voluntary. It actually sounds very childish to me to take a job as an animator knowing the implications and then complaining about it on Twitter later.
Thinking people have the choice to go into a high paying profession just because they want to is what I'd define as childish, people are not offered a multitude of jobs on a silver platter and voluntarily choose the low paying one, maybe animation is the only thing they like, or the only thing there're good at, I recommend you actually do a bit of research before running your mouth about the subject, there are people who are passionate about animation and they work as animators, trying their best to not let the criminally low wages deter them, and you rarely see actual animators complain anyway, it's mostly people outside of the industry such as myself who are dumbfounded at the payout rates
This is some good content
