    I have learned so much from all your 5D videos. All great points! I have been shooting with it for about a year and a half. I love my 5D. I have used it for just about everything (portraits, events, sports, landscapes). It does have limitations but a great 1st camera to learn! All the points you described is how I use the camera. Can’t wait for the next 5d video!

    Excellent video, the lens that I have glued to my 5D is the 40mm 2.8 which is awesome and highly recommended, value for money is unbeatable. Along with the 6D I just bought, also got the 28mm f1.8, can't wait to receive them 👍🏼

    Great vid! My daughter wanted to start photography. when i started it was film!! SO i got her the 5D - the guy at the shop was like get a cheap "new" one and i said NO!! anyone can take a pic with a mobile phone even BUT the 5D with it's rich colour and "back to basics" whether you like it or not will teach her. i did a quick crash course in manual mode, that's what she shoots on - using speed, aperture and ISO - she is actually, in 2 days, coming out with some pretty good pics. Now i am trying to get her to pay attention to the histogram and the light meter through the view finder. oh and i picked up the 5D that was MINT and the count, when we started was 5100 shots. yeah it could have been zero'd but this was like it was in a bag in a cupboard and hardly ever used.

    Any video about 5D Classic deserves thumb up and a comment! *My two cents:* install Magic Lantern and set screen saturation to "high" (not "very high") it makes colours pretty close to real (unlike the original pale look). There are more advantages ML adds: fast zoom on playback, intervalometer, workaround to get 2sec timer without locking the mirror, etc. Moreover, I was lucky to find and installed EE-D focusing screen with grid on it. Helps enormously with horizon and composition. There's also another one (EE-S) for fast lenses, showing smaller DoF (kit EE-A only shows about f/2.8 DoF in viewfinder), which makes it easier and joyful for manual focusing.

    Here's something I've done with almost all of my digital EF cameras: get a different focus screen than the default that has split-image focusing where the center AF point is. With that, you can easily and precisely adjust any back- or front-focus issues with fast primes, depending on how accurate your actual eye sight is. I wear strong prescription glasses and I have issues focusing the 50mm f1.2 L on any of my EF cameras with a split-image focus screen. It's not as easy, elegant and fast as using a rangefinder patch, but it can be as precise.
    I also use a chipped adapter to mount Olympus OM lenses on my EF cameras, I manually focus them using the split-image screen and I get focus confirmation on the center point when manually nailing focus. The longer Olympus OM lenses with fast apertures make EXCELLENT portrait lenses on the 5D.

    As someone who has mostly shot medium format film with occasional forays into 4x5 over the past 40 years, and with cameras from the 70s and earlier, I'm always amazed at the features on the newest cameras. I think it's the Sony A7RIV that even has "Insect eye focusing". Wow!
    My "beginner" T3i was the only digital camera I've had until now, though it served me very well once I pitched its awful kit lens, and I even did some product photography with it that was quite successful. I'm now playing with a 5D Classic and loving it so far. I tend to like things that focus on the _essence_ of what the thing is supposed to be, and for that the 5D Classic is in the same category as my RB67 and 500C, IMHO.
    Your videos were instrumental in getting me to pull the trigger on the 5D, so thank you! Sent you a coffee. 🙂

    I agree about the noise in the photos. which is especially noticeable in modern cameras with a small sensor. In "not noisy" photos at high ISOs, especially, a clear "watercolor" effect appears, with the contours of details outlined. This can be clearly seen when magnified. Moreover, such functions come by default in a raw file.
    I was able to find original batteries that have been in storage for ten or more years. Surprisingly, they actually kept the capacity.

    Just found your channel and I have to say you are great breath of fresh air with your honest views on camera gear and what you do and don't need. I have a 5D classic and a 60D and 70D (70D has a focus issue where it says focused but misses quiet often) I have shot weddings with these bodies for friends and a couple of paid weddings. But watching your channel im looking to get a 6D and a 24-105 F4 L to go with my 70-200 F4 L and the nifty fifty. But again many thanks for your fantastic work, looking forward to more content.

    Ten years ago I started on the 650D, which at the time was incredible for the articulating touch screen and from that I began very spoilt for the tech. Last year I upgraded to the 90D and was even more spoilt for all the bells and whistles
    Then I bought a 6D which took me back a bit and after I got used to it I am really enjoying the process of less distraction and more photo. It turns out the touch screen, while "easy", is very rarely a deal breaker in the ability to take a photo. It never crossed my mind before that I could take a photo without it since that it what I started with.
    Then I found a deal on a 5DsR and after I started using the two full frame cameras together, I gave the 90D to my girlfriend to replace her 70D and I haven't looked back.
    The only time I really miss the touch screen is for tripod photos to zoom in and move around to check focus and details, but I use the 6D for that and the smartphone app.
    Very long story to get to the end point, thank you for the detailed talk about noise and the benefits on it. I was a little disappointed by the 5DsR in non-ideal conditions with the noise it produces in darks, but now I am reconsidering it and realising that perhaps the 5DsR is instead simply NOT removing it for me in camera as opposed to what I was used to in the 90D. I think I am starting to appreciate having the choice of what to do with the noise.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 роки тому +1

      Thats good Dave, noise isnt an issue unless it really degrades the picture. People are far too concerned with it in a way that doesnt help their photography. Enjoy your 5dsr! I had the 5ds and it doesnt have much in the way of built in noise reduction on the RAW files it is very very sharp and detailed even when there is noise.

    I was photographing an outside event at a City Park last Sunday. It was a very bright, unusually sunny day, and I couldn't review the images on the rear screen of my 6D's (I use two). But I could see the histograms. I didn't overexpose a single image and underexposed very few. So, I didn't know exactly which of my s😮hots had been successful - but I was confident that enough of them would work out. I didn't even think about substituting my 5D for one of the 6D's. But it would have worked well. Not being able to see either screen would have leveled the playing field with all that glare from the bright sun that is low in the sky this late in the year.

    Finally pulled the trigger on getting one and just put in an order. Now I have to decide on a lens. Leaning towards 24-105 F4, as a walkaround lens (a lot of landscape etc). I tend to fall back on those kinds of lenses I notice (I have recently also purchased the Pentax K10D, Nikon D200, Konica Minolta 5D, Olympus E-500, all with CCD sensors. (Plus Sigma SD14). The 5D will be my first old cmos camera, but since everyone says it is as close to CCD you get with CMOS, I wanted to try it...

    In my experience, the “high iso sweet spot” of the 5D is 1250, just one step lower than the maximum 1600 (without using extended range). from 50 to 1250 any exposure and iso combination is Ok. The real downside of the 5D for me is the lack of sensor cleaning nor AF micro adjustment. I had 9mm of back focus using the 50 f 1.8 STM which I corrected by trimming the inner screws near the shutter, but that is not the best solution because it will affect any other lenses slightly. Its ok by me because I use the 50 all the time and i still getting decent shots with the 70-300 f 4-5.6 IS USM but I don’t recommend doing it unless you know what you’re doing. I also want to mention that your 5D vs 6D is very useful for the 5D lovers who would like to update their classics. Cheers from Argentina.

    My 5D the grain at any ISO is very pleasing. I like it. Also, even if I use center point I do have to sometimes take more than one shot to get eyes in focus. Other than that, it produces beautiful detail images.

    I love my classic, I got back into photography after a big break from the Canon AE Program, and bought a 70D. I found it made me lazy and I was losing some skills. The 5D took me back somewhat to those AE days. Agree with you about the focus points. I always use the central point to focus and recompose, much more reliable. One lens that I love with the classic, is the 85mm f1.8. Tried the L lens, but the focussing is too slow, the f1.8 works superbly.

    I just picked one of these up after watching some of your vids. At 400 ISO and above, there is some noise but I generally run my RAW files through DXO RAW before I bring them into ACR for processing. The DXO preprocessing does a phenomenal job of smoothing out the noise and actually adding more contrast and detail into the images from my eye. A huge improvement to the files. I like them both ways though depending on the final look I’m trying to achieve with the subject matter. For monochrome images, I think the digital noise renders quite well and has a nice filmic look, which is really why I purchased it to begin with.

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Рік тому +2

      Hi Tim, one thing id say is worry less about noise, youtube is teaching everyone its bad, unless its damaging the picture I would not worry about it, the only times i worry with high iso is if the camera is doing in camera noise reduction on the raw file reducing detail or you want to increase dynamic range in editing but not have the colour noise that can come with that. There are so many beautiful but grainy photos.

    Damn it!!!! I just bought (again) a 5D Classic. (MPB £200). I owned one 7 years ago but found myself reaching for my 6D all the time. However I've spent the last 7 years wishing I hadn't sold it.
    My 40mm f/2.8 lived on it (What a superb bargain this lens is). I'm awaiting delivery and can't wait to hear that shutter and see those colours again.
    I traded my 1D mk2N against it. Another real classic I think, but I never realised it wasn't full-frame (Doh .. do your research), and 8Mp was never enough to justify carrying that tank around.
    I just can't bear seeing these fabulous cameras, for around 200 quid, going unowned.

    I have a pair of 5D bodies, one for colour, the other converted for infrared. Regarding focus, I don’t have any Canon auto focus lenses, so I use a hot shoe mounted optical rangefinder from the 1950’s - works for me. I too, have a set of Hahnel batteries - very good. I also have the battery grip along with two AA battery trays fitted with rechargeable Eneloop batteries - works well, and future proof. I alway keep a lookout for 5D bodies in mint condition, they are out there. A great video about a great camera, and oh yes, the noise at high ISO is very attractive in B&W.

    Another thing about wanting the best equipment is what do you want to do with it, and what to you expect to achieve. The 5d is fantastic but you have to use one to know it's limitations but also it's strengths, they are quite inexpensive now, so don't think spending tons of money on the next best thing will make you a better photographer, using older equipment sometimes makes you better by making you use your brain to make the equipment you have work for you. I'm not a great or technical type of photographer but watching this I realised I am doing some things right, I use the techniques you mention and didn't even know it. Another thing is stop chasing the rainbow because whatever you buy will be out of date quicker than you think, it's the way camera makers work.

    As usual great information. As for third party glass, you are correct, I have a Sigma 50mm that works well on some Canon bodies and not others, focus is accurate on one DSLR body and off on another. I have seen this on a Sigma zoom as well, it needed a lot of micro adjustments on the body I used it on, very annoying. So, moral of the story I guess is be careful and maybe go manual lenses here and there, depending if going third party. Although, one would think, that mirrorless bodies might not have as much of a likelihood of a focus issue, at least for single non-tracking shots? Maybe?
    Yes that screen sucks and I have an early one, I hear they did a slight upgrade on later serial numbers? Basically useful mostly for histogram and the blinkies as you say. I am pondering some m42 ideas, which may bring more pain along with possibilities, worse case I have other bodies with live view. Besides, I find landscapes pretty much don't move, except maybe in California.
    Good information all along. Best wishes, keep up the good work. God bless!

      Mirrorless is much better for focus in general, thats is real benefit. There seems to have been a slight change to some of the 5d bodies on the later ones but im not sure how much of a difference that made. would be interested to see what m42 options you are looking at. Thanks again John!

    Theirs a lot of talk about the importance of learning to read histograms, the only problem is how do you learn to read it? Maybe a short video dedicated to this with examples using a canon 5d would be really useful, I say the 5d only because that’s my main camera.

  • @josgeusens4637
    @josgeusens4637 Рік тому

    The remark about the histogram is actually universal, I think.
    Modern displays are much better in rendering the images on the card, but we should always know that even then they only show us the jpeg image, never the raw file. Also the display will never have the quality of a dedicated and calibrated monitor that can show us a wide gamut.
    Aside from that, the histogram always shows what is captured and is the most reliable tool on any digital camera.
    I also think that the display of my Canon 5D (classic) is small and off colour compared to the one on my D750, but in both cases I only rely on the histogram for moving on to the next shot(s). Even when the display of the D750 is roughly comparable to my calibrated monitor.
    I always had the impression that everyone using a digital camera would read the histogram, but apparently I'm wrong. That's surprisingly because coming from analog photography I would rely on my wonderful Sekonic light meter to give me the perfectly exposed slides. A histogram is so much more convenient and reliable than any light meter because the histogram on a camera tells us exactly what is captured, while any external light meter is not that precisely matched to the camera.
    Regarding the focusing I can confirm that the 17-40 f/4L works flawless and gives magnificent images on the 5D.
    I have mentioned before that I bought the 5D mainly because the flange distance allows me to use old and very old lenses.
    These are all manual focus and in that regard I can say that using the focusing screen works great and very precise. I have a magnifier for the Canon that makes focusing easier, but it also restricts the viewfinder's field, especially with glasses on. Therefor I do not use it often.
    About noise, I agree one hundred percent with you. A grainy image does look sharper also because of the noise in it. In the analog days (should I name it that?) we used to apply a noise mask to unsharp images to make them appear sharper.
    Also, I have waited to buy my first digital camera until those who produce raw images became affordable for me because I did absolutely not like the jpegs. Grass was a blob of green, instead of sprites and I disliked it so much. It's also the problem with cellphones these days.
    One thing also, is what I came to see is about printing. I had to print a noisy, small photo and after I removed the noise and sharpened it up a little, I printed it and could clearly see posterising artifacts. What you describe that noise helps to smoothen out the transitions, is what I thought at that moment and applied noise to the photo, which lead to a very good print with excellent gradation.
    The Canon 5D is indeed a camera that makes a photographer's heart beat. To me it reminds me a lot of the analog photography and that is a real pleasure for this hobby to me. Having the benefit of digital, makes it a lot more cheaper too.
    Regarding the battery, I think there is nothing to complain about. Taking photos a whole day, it never let me down once. Also it once happened that I put the camera on the shelf without switching it off and a week later I noticed my mistake but did not have to recharge.

    Wow the usb battery charger was neat. As for lenses I've had little to no issues with the 35/1.4, 50/1.2 apart from the inherent issue of working with such a shallow DOF, which makes it (near) impossible to focus recompose wide open, but you wouldn't be able to do that on any other camera. What has disappointed me though is that it's also near impossible to manually focus these lenses wide open (I even got the matt focus screen) . It's as if the focusing screen is fooling your eye (and the cameras focusing sensor has no clue so you can't listen to that) and wants you to focus slightly in front. Pretty disheartening as manually focusing the 5d is much more joyous than using the AF due to hunting and so on; also it gives you that sense of control, and you can become pretty quick at it as well.
    Is there a qualitative difference to AF over MF, as in: does one shift the inner elements more radically than the other? I find AF creates more movement inside the lens and manages to catch a fuller focus than the MF - even if I manage to hit it. Any ideas?

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  2 роки тому +1

      I think with wide aperture lenses you are always going to be better off with AF on anything that can move at all. I think the fuller focus you describe is simply its more accurate than manual focus.

    Thanks for these tricks and tips for the 5dc. One thing is to check the exposure on the back screen, another thing is to check, whether the shot is in focus. You cannot really tell on the LCD screen of the 5dc. This is why I am looking at a 6d which seems to have a better screen and WIFI. I know, you have recently compared both cameras. Do still have a 6d and use it on a regular basis?

      I dont have the 6D any more, i will probably get one again the future. I highly recommend the 6D and regret selling it. Update! I received my 5D (mpb). Before getting to the negatives (there are a few, and you mention them) let's talk about the positives:
    (1) It's 200 quid !!! It takes images your £1,000 Smartphone can only dream of. Actual bokeh, not that dreadful software bokeh that Smartphones generate.
    (2) That sensor. 13Mp of beautiful pixels. OK you can't crop too much but you can crop fine. Just get the shot right in the first place.
    (3) That shutter sound. OMG ... it makes you want to take photos just to hear that shutter (I swear there's a 35mm film motor-drive in there).
    (4) The purity of it. It doesn't have many options but it has enough. I have an EOS 500 35mm film camera. It was one of Canon's final rolls of the 35mm dice and has a lot of tech for a film camera. The 5D is soooo much better. If you think film is good ... you really need to try a 5D.
    (5) The handling. I prefer my 6D handling but the simplicity of the 5D makes up for that. It puts me in more of a point & shoot frame of mind.
    I've started using it as my daily carry, with a 40mm f/2.8. I shoot Monochrome jpegs + RAW. I love the images and rarely resort to editing RAW files.
    I don't know why, at £200, everyone doesn't buy one. Buy one now before the Hipsters suddenly jump on it. Buy one as an office ornament. It's a bona fide historical photographical classic.

    Canon have what they call cross hair AF sensors in lenses and some more than others. Canon’s af was always rubbish for the cameras in question outside of the centre point. But film cameras never really went much beyond centre points. As you point out, to gain function or ease of use you sacrifice image rendering & colours. I dare anyone to use a Contax iia & then find something to complain about on the 5dmk i.
