    I love the simplicity of the 5D. No auto iso; you just have to know how to use your exposure triangle. Pure photography.
    Great video; thankyou Robin.

    I have owned MANY different cameras over the past 20 years, and the shutter sound of my 5d Classic is truly unique. This camera has to go down in history as the single best digital camera ever created! If canon re-introduced it as a new camera today, I'd be the first in line to buy one. Thanks for posting thus video.

      @@markrigg6623 13 megapixels yields a good size of file to work with...not too big, and not too small, so editing is much faster than my Mark IV. The menu system is minimal (compared to today's cameras), I don't need video, so that makes this camera quite simple. It is very durable, and it fits my hands perfectly. I only use 1-3 focus points. I can't think of anything else I would want or need in a camera. Plus, if you shoot jpegs, the color technology is much more pleasing than today's cameras. I guess I should say, in my opinion, it will go down in MY history as the best camera ever.🙂 Others may have a different opinion.

    Yes, canon's colours are very good, but that 5D classic is truly special, even for Canon.
    They tried to introduce film shooter to digital keeping the colours as faithful as possible and they never were able to get so close in the cameras that came after this.

    A tip for those who want to buy a used 5D Classic: the first ones they produced used to have a weak pentaprism mirror mount, and after a few thousand shots, one of the mirrors would come off (the one you see when you remove the lens). Canon then started a recall campaign to reinforce the mirror. Just make sure the mirror is reinforced when you search for a second hand 5D; you can do it by removing the lens and checking if the mirror you see has two thin metal strips on the shorter sides (and btw if it might be helpful to anybody living in Europe: I'm currently selling on eBay my perfectly working 5D classic - one of the last few which were made with a reinforced mirror straight from the factory - because I need to reduce my belongings before moving to a new apartment and just keep my minimalist m43 setup. I know that it can still make somebody else really happy for the years to come. They're so simple, absolutely built like tanks, and trust me: the analog look this camera has is a real thing, it's just magic)

    The 5d classic is a magic camera. I prefer it almost over any of the newer cameras. Yes it’s nowhere near as good technically, but as a portrait camera I have yet to come across something better for skin tones

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Рік тому +1

      I always have trouble editing photo's because there's soo many options on how to stylize them, but with the 5D, as long as a person is in the frame, I always target my editing to revolve around them. It makes editing choices soo much easier, because the face helps keep your editing in line, because it tells you when you've gone too far. You can use pretty much any other camera for anything else, but the sensor is definitely tuned toward skin tones. This also makes sense, both because of the color filter array they used, and because red is the least energy wavelength, along with the least energy in natural light. So the bigger the pixels the better. You can think of pixel size as a sample rate. The bigger the pixel, the more samples of light a pixel gets, which gives more samples to measure for the final result. This is why the 5D is so good with skin tones.

    Outstanding video on the Canon 5D Classic camera Robin. It has been well documented that the older lower megapixel sensors e.g. Canon 5D Classic, Nikon D3, D700 and Fujifilm X-Pro1 cameras render a more cinematic and filmic look. As a photographer who learned photography shooting film I appreciate the color rendition and more cinematic rendering of these older sensors. Thanks so much for your thoughts, insight and impression of this truly classic Canon DSLR.

    This is my main camera that I still use regularly, and it's still near mint condition. I wouldn't even sell it because it wouldn't fetch enough to buy a modern replacement. It'd be like selling your 10 year old car that just went out of warranty just to buy a new one, even though it's paid off and looks and works fine.

    I couldn´t agree more with your review. I own two 5D Mk I bodies, that I used for event photography for a decade. Recently, I bought a 6D Mk I which has everything I miss in the 5D: faster processing speed, much better screen quality, features like wifi, GPS and auto ISO thet I need in some situations. The 6D has a broader dynamic range and a more sensitive (outstanding) central focus point and a similar picture quality to the 5D Mk I. However, the 5D produces more film-like pictures and that is because I kept both of my 5D bodies, that are a charm wih my pro "L" lenses. Great video. I enjoyed it very much. Thumbs up for sure. Greetings.

    I bought a 5D in about 2016 so I could explore the much discussed world of “full frame”. I really enjoyed it. I took it as my only camera on trips to Japan and China.
    Over time, I learned its limitations and quirks. I can almost change ISO without looking at the button (you change drive mode if you turn the wrong dial - done it many times). This is my only DSLR now with everything else mirrorless. But I love picking it up and seeing through the OVF. Yesterday I was taking pictures of equipment I am selling. My mirrorless cameras were not focusing properly in low light but I brought out the 5D and got some great shots.

I think battery life has gotten worse and the recycle time shot to shot has slowed in the past year or two. It’s not terrible and I don’t shoot high volumes of shots but I have wondered if it is a sign age is catching up with it (the camera, not me - at least hopefully not me).

    About colors: Canon has lost it completely since the older 5D models so unfortunately your statement is no longer valid for newer cameras (the old 5D rocks though). Canon colors these days are quite muted, cold and "clinical" (partly because of the lenses I think) and easily end up cartoonish when pushed and skintones appear more "anemic" when the light is not optimal.
    IMO (as a Canon shooter since 2008) Olympus is No 1 in the color department. Whatever they are doing, never EVER change it. Rich, vivid, warm colors with earthy tones right out of the gate with minimal need for PP. Love it.

    Funny. I was talking to my dog today on our afternoon walk and one of the things I told him that I particularly liked about my Canon 5D Mark II was the sound of it's shutter. I own lots of cameras including the Fujifilm X100F, Fujifilm X-E3 and many compact cameras, but there is something most reassuring and deeply satisfying about the clunk of the Canon 5D shutter. It reminds me of all those VW ads on television where they were always going on about the sound of the car door shutting. In the end it can be the non-functional aspects of a product that fosters our affection for it. Isn't it the same in love - we never fall in love for functional reasons, we are caught by a smile or the warmth of a touch.

    It's great to see an older camera performing so well - think we get hung up on getting the latest gear when it's really all about honing your own skills and what better camera to try on a budget. Reliability is very reassuring,something that OM Systems need to address if my experiences are anything to go by. My EM10 mk 2 had the pancake lens fail twice in less then five years followed by the screen - not impressed!

      @robinwong  Рік тому +2

      Agreed, old cameras are great cameras. I think Olympus/OM System make high grade/robust cameras, but that is only true for their high end, flagship cameras, the E-M1 series. Anything below that, unfortunately, they are not made to last, and that is very true.

    I caved and finally picked up a 5D Classic, in mint condition, it looks like it's never been used before. The first thing I noticed is how the finish of the camera is nearly identical to my EOS 1v. The entire interface and how to use the camera is very much similar to the EOS 1v - the design principle of the user experience is that everything you need is accessed through a button press and the dials - no menu other than when you need a custom function (mirror lock up) or bracketing - exactly as on the 1v or 1n. Even the remote shutter release port is the same as on the 1n and 1v - not as with later digital EOS bodies. The 5D Classic is essentially a digital version of the analog 1v and 1n. Canon made the 5D Classic to lure their film photography 1n and 1v customers to digital - and they did a great job with that. I can see that 5D Classic quickly becoming one of my favorite cameras.

    Reason #9 optical view finder. Thank you for discussing EVF vs. OVF. For me, I embrace the EVF. WYSIWYG is important for me. The sensor doesn’t see the world quite the same way I do. As you suggest, the EVF lets me see what the image will look like before I press the shutter. That is a major benefit. In addition, I like to shoot in B&W. I can see B&W when using an OVF but it is so much easier seeing the image in B&W in the view finder. It is easier to see the light as the camera sees it. I am a mirrorless convert.
    The price of this body is so cheap. Having the choice of so many Canon lenses is also a powerful argument for this body. The telling argument you make is you enjoy using this body. If it ain’t fun it ain’t getting used.

    Robin, always love your energy and passion for photography and gear. Lately, I've had an eye on the Canon 5D classic for several reasons. I own and shoot the Nikon D700 for some of the same reasons you mention in this video about the Canon 5D. Thanks for sharing your images and demonstrating that it is the photographer that still makes the images. Well done. There are just a few statements here I could take an issue with (but I'll limit it to one). "You're seeing exactly what your eyes are seeing through the camera". Yes, in part, this is true. You're not seeing a limited DR representation of "real life". But Robin, (and I know you know this), the images captured by the sensor also do not possess the DR of "real life" or more accurately, what our eyes see. In addition, with DSLRs, we never see the image we are actually taking (mirror flips up), but with some of the current iterations of mirrorless cameras (Nikon Z8/Z9 and others), there is no blackout or lag in EVF representation. While I'm on this difference, I'll just mention the limited focus points of the DSLRs like the 5D classic and some need to focus and recompose. That said, I still love shooting with my D700 and taking portraits with it. It's fun making my photography friends guess which camera I took them with. Nailing eye focus though, with shallow DOF lenses, is far faster and more efficient on some of the current mirrorless bodies (for me). Thanks as always.

    Great video, I also have the 5D classic and like it a lot alongside the original Canon full frame, the 1Ds. FYI, when the digital age came in late 90's, Canon entered a technical agreement with Kodak the film company to acquire the color science. Nikon did the same with Fuji. Both cooperative agreements must have been exclusive enough that the remaining japanese camera producers were left out and had to create it on their own. Needless to say, Minolta, Pentax, Yashica, Olympus have not done well in the market place.

It's fast in any way, it's durable, especially it's shutter sound cause satisfactory, the photos are still very nice and has a feel to them. Now I adapt vintage lenses like the SMC Takumar 55 f1.8 to the 5D Classic to get a pure vintage photographhy experience :D

    Lovely camera, I shoot it alongside my Hasselblad X2D and X1D mark ii, and I love the results. Haven’t you tried Canons own 85mm f1.8, it’s a fabulous lens, even shot on my Hasselblad with an adapter it fills the medium format image frame almost vithout vignetting. See my video review of it here on UA-cam. By the way, I would add that images from 5D has a very film like look, which is awesome in these days of digital perfection.

    Some of my best photos were with the 5D classic. My one is still absolutely immaculate as good as the day I bought it. I use a Canon 7dmkII at the moment and long waiting for the Canon R7. I'm still thinking about the OM-1 but I thought I would try the Canon R7 first then sell it for the OM-1 if I don't like it.

    • @gregm6894
      @gregm6894 Рік тому

      Compare high ISO studio scene images on Imaging Resource site. The OM-1 beats the R7 at every ISO up to and including ISO 25600.

    • @naturealbums
      @naturealbums Рік тому

      @@gregm6894 you could be right OM has a much better sensor in terms of IQ and ISO I'm not expecting miracles but I see both cameras are better than my 7DmkII. I have some good Canon lenses like the 300mm F2.8LIS and the 100-400mm@F5.6mkII with the 300 I get 600mm F5.6 or 400mm F4 there is no equivalent OM lens. Even so I'm still considering the 300mmF4 from OM as it is a fine lens but it won't outresolve the Canon. The features of the OM-1 are impressive I might just have both over time. Fuji are also already dropping price of the XH-2s it's same price as OM-1 so now even more confusion for me.

    • @gregm6894
      @gregm6894 Рік тому

      @@naturealbums I don't want to get into a hair splitting debate about lens resolution, nor equivalence, but I can say that personally lens speed is much more important to me than shallow DOF -- so for my purposes f/4 =f/4. Your Canon 300mm f/2.8 is without question a superb lens, but if you stick a 2X TC on it to get 600mm @ f/5.6 you will be exactly 1 stop slower than the Olympus 300mm f/4 Pro -- with the same field of view, albeit shallower DOF. If you go to the Imaging Resource site and do a side by side comparison of the Canon 300mm and the Olympus 300mm you will see that the Oly 300mm is sharper, corner to corner at every aperture (click on their lab test 'Blur' tool.)
      Again, I'm certainly not knocking the Canon 300mm, but the Oly 300mm is crazy sharp and resolves a lot of detail. That plus the Synch IS with the OM-1 body makes for a very impressive bird/wildlife combo.

    I love my 5Dinosaur, it is pretty spartan but the IQ is awesome! I agree, Canon got the colors right from the beginning. I have also a 6D and the colors are much more "earthy-warmer" than the "greenish-cooler" palette of the 5D, both are awesome.
    Yes, it might be 13mp (not 12 lol) but remember the Sony A7s cameras are 12mp and many people use them not only for video but for stills too. Not long ago the norm on m43 was 16mp. I have self-publish 2 books, one with images taken with my 10mp M8 and one with my 18mp M9P, so 13 sounds like a sweet spot to me!
    One of the beauties of full-frame cameras is the look they give even with low-cost lenses. Now imagine what you can do with top-of-the-line L-lenses.

      For a long time I've been considering getting my own 5D. But isn't the 6D better really? That's what I've been wondering. The difference in the color palette aside.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Ricardo. The full frame look is definitely there, but then there are also very noticeable flaws (distortion, corner softness, vignetting, chromatic aberration, and generally the sharpness is nothing to write home about). I am satisfied with the results, and I am not using my 5D and the cheap primes for jobs. Of course the L lenses will perform much better, but they also cost more and are heavier!

      You find the 5d is green hue? I find it’s more magenta hue .. then again , I have 3 5d classics and the Color is a little different on each of them

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Рік тому +3

      @@Bigredfitnessmoshe It's the out of camera JPEG's that definitely have the green hue. They don't even match RAW files when edited in Canon's DPP editor. I think the real benefit though is its white balance is almost always spot on. I have raw files that I could take into lightroom, switch to auto white balance, and it would be exactly the same. And there are other images where if I tried to use auto white balance in lightroom, they would clearly not be correct, but the "As shot" white balance is always dependable. Another way to handle WB is to simply set it to either 2700k or Daylight and shoot it like film stock. This is partly what gives film its look, film was balanced primarily around these two white balances, and it was common for people to shoot daylight white balanced film indoors, or on cloudy days, or for evening sunsets, which is what gave them the unique renditions we're used to seeing.

      The 5D is awesome and its IQ and color rendition put to shame many modern cameras. Just remember there is no AUTO-ISO, so you need to be aware to adjust accordingly. My suggestion would be to try a fast prime, like a 50mm f1.8 and you will be ready to go.

    the autofocus isn't as reliable as people say. They have a tendency to backfocus, that is the focus ends up slightly behind your subject. Incredibly annoying. Might be fixed if you service it, but I've done so before and I'm not too sure it actually got better. I would go for a 6d in order to get the best of both worlds, although you loose out on build quality (but ergonomically it's very similar).
