    I still remember sitting in the audience the very first time I saw Van Halen live in 1980 and saying to myself “I regret that I wasn’t old enough to see legendary bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin or the Jimi Hendrix Experience but seeing this band tonight makes up for it.” And here we are now in 2024 and I feel so grateful to have seen them early on.

      You should be! I'm very envious - never got to see them live, as they didn't once play a headline gig in Ireland, where I'm from. The one and only time was opening for Bon Jovi in 1995, and even that was before I was into music.
      I can't even imagine how awesome it must've been to see the band in 1980. You're very lucky 🍀

      @@iconsremembered I guess I took it for granted because I live in LA. At that time, there obviously was no internet, no MTV as of yet so I had never seen any live footage of Van Halen before that first show. I was amazed how Eddie made it look so effortless. I had this preconceived notion of a guy with a really serious look on his face and sweating profusely to play as he did but it was the complete opposite. Hopefully someday, Alex will release some concert footage from that period so you can see it.

    "Long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll," is very applicble to Van Halen. Dave has stated countless times that their individual and collective talent just didn't fall on them like Mana from Heaven. It was tens of thousands of hours of practicing and performing. When Van Halen went on tour in 1978, they were a seasoned live band that the headliners could not match. Renoff's book "Van Halen Rising" is a great work and details just how long and drawn out the process was to fianlly record and go on tour.

    • @iconsremembered
      @iconsremembered  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah Dave especially has mentioned it a lot in recent years. There was a good conversation he had with Joe Rogan where they talked about how they were so tight and battle-hardened from playing for years. The book 'Outliers' was brought up. A bit like the Beatles before they made it - so many hours and years of practice making for some serious playing and brilliant chemistry.

    • @iconsremembered
      @iconsremembered  Місяць тому

      @@robhasenwinkle Exactly. Van Halen had many strengths, but one of the biggest ones was pure energy. Despite having taken years to make it, they still blew absolutely everyone away as a live group through to at least the late 80s. The athleticism and power is unreal when you look back at the clips. They could only do that by absolutely loving what they did.

    • @robhasenwinkle
      @robhasenwinkle Місяць тому

      @@iconsremembered yah, funny you mention athleticism, as not only are they athletes on their instruments or vocals, they actually look like fit cardio athletes, I mean not only DLR but EVH too, man. Eddie was chiseled and ripped and had a magazine ready 6 pack on their first album. He looked like he coulda been an athletic coach for a team with long hair. Al and Mikey looked more like they were on a wrestling team, or what not. But the term athleticism, to me, applies in several ways with DLR era VH.

    • @iconsremembered
      @iconsremembered  Місяць тому

      @@robhasenwinkle Yeah I have to admit I have an unhealthy fascination with Ed's physique. It's just baffling to me. I mean, Dave did train and do a lot of stuff, so it's more understandable that he looked ripped and muscly. But Ed drank like a fish, smoked non-stop, ate crap (you hear him on the way out to McDonald's in Steve Rosen's interview with Alex!) and yet still looked like he worked out every day. I guess he did get his cardio every day on stage and the drugs and booze mean he didn't eat much. Still doesn't seem fair though 😁

    Excellent job. Even seeing the photos which I think we’ve all seen, you’re putting them in context along with the interviews and that’s the sweet spot. The 5 minutes feels like 15 and that’s a good thing. Man even digging up audio do Dave saying 200 songs, Alex said 300, and Michael 400…That’s going the distance.

    • @iconsremembered
      @iconsremembered  Місяць тому +1

      Love comments like this - thank you! Yeah one of the tasks that takes the most time is going through all the interviews looking for anything that might be useful. Sometimes it really pays off and it's nice when you can then have little moments like the "200...300...400 songs".
      Also, thanks for saying that about how the material is used, even when it isn't necessarily new. I'd love to find stuff that hasn't been seen/heard before (I've had a couple of examples of this, but it's very difficult to do), but more than anything, I just wanted to construct something that puts everything together in a good way. Really glad you think I've done that 👍🏻

    Really nice with the film reel layout of the video. Its really well done, not distracting or hard to keep up with - a cool way to present the videos and pictures. I found the disco/punk emergence fascinating. One could imagine VH pivoting to punk and try and ride that wave - particularly when they were grinding it out in the clubs. I guess they knew what they were good at, and why should they blunt their talent for the chance at a short cut to fame. Great job as ever on the video

    • @iconsremembered
      @iconsremembered  Місяць тому

      Thanks again for the kind words Kav! Interesting you say that about playing punk stuff - the VH brothers were way too musical to really want to play anything that basic, but Ed has said numerous times that a song like "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" was sort of his version of writing a punk song. So it did have some vague influence on what their were doing.

      Thanks a lot for the comments and suggestion. You're not the first person who's mentioned that about putting them together as a full video. I have already put them together in a playlist, but do you mean more like actually re-editing them, so that they play as one video file? I'd like to make more video covering after Van Halen become well-known, but maybe it is a good idea as a starting point to edit these first five together as a longer "early years" documentary.

    • @joem2457
      @joem2457 Місяць тому

      @@iconsremembered It seems that longer form content is easier for people to submit themselves to watching than short chunks. We humans are freaky creatures and we like simplicity and lack of effort so someone would rather just choose a long video with all of the info than search for a playlist with a bunch of parts or click on each subsequent part. I'm guilty of taking video series on yt and stitching them together myself in editing software to watch in one sitting. Your scripting and editing is superb and I can tell it takes a lot of time but it may be more fruitful to allow yourself to make one large and easily consumable product. I'll still stay tuned for your individual episodes but other people may not so its really just all about human mental engineering
