      Definitely a lot of Afghanistan and combat veterans in this class. One fellow student had a Navy Comm Medal for rescuing someone from a burning vehicle while on leave.

    My Master gunnery sergeant when I was in marine security guard at battalion, served in Vietnam in the biggest baddest ass way. I was the platoon sergeant in 1990, Colonel Shisler what is the HMFIC. But my master gunny was the most importantIndividual I ever served with. Thank you sir, and he would’ve kicked my ass if I would’ve called him sir.

    Lots of memories. I graduated MSG school in the late '80s. Visited Quantico a few years ago, but when I went to the old building, it looks like they moved to another part of the base. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to search out where they moved too. At least I got to see my old barracks again.

    I was the platoon sergeant for MSG battalion in 1990. I came in to Embassy duty when it was a bad thing. Sergeant Lonetree had fucked us all. We had to re-create ourselves In 1987. In 1986 Sargent Lonetrew disgraced us all. I Was the first permanent Marine detachment at the Embassy in Paramaribo Suriname. My second station was Manila Philippines. Bad shit happened in Manila. Lieutenant Colonel James T. Rowe. He was assassinated while I was on post one in 1989. I had to inspect his vehicle after the assassination. It went through the rear post of the rear door where there was no armor. Colonel Rowe Was a awesome individual, someone you want to be friends with. He was a good person. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, you better read his book.

    I had two roommates at my first duty station in 1964. One of them went off to Sea School and the other went to Embassy duty. I remember reading his orders and it was something effect he would report to [the name of a company like Hotel or Foxtrot company back east]. I envied both of them. All I got was a top secret clearance and the job of wandering around with a four star admiral and a bunch of other flag officers bringing them top secret/secret documents and messages. It was so top heavy a Marine captain made the coffee if none of the five enlisted were around.

      Nicole Menas after the Vietnam War the Marine Corps was starved for Sergeants. I was meritoriously promoted to Pfc and L/Cpl and promoted to Sgt in 39 months so it possible. Especially if you're in a MOS where Cpl and Sergeants are needed.

    • @andrek1709
      @andrek1709 6 років тому

      Yup. Back in the day, we salty Leathernecks used to call them "Shake n' Bake" Sergeants. Instant promotions due to enlistment contract guarantees (Needs Of The Corps), or the "poster Marine" Sergeant was meritoriously promoted which is possible before 4 years of service and even before 3, so it doesn't surprise me if there's no Good Cookie on the dress blue blouse. Good on that Marine for choosing MSG Duty as a special duty assignment. I recall having 4 years time in grade as a Sergeant/10 years time in service, and seeing these kinds of motivated NCO's around me.

      +Jamie Lee Hi Jamie, that's a great question. MSG duty is open to all Marines who meet the basic requirements, however, it is not open to new Marines just beginning their careers. After completing boot camp, Marine Combat Training (or SOI if you go in as a grunt), and your MOS (job) school, you will need to spend about 18 months in the operating forces (fleet) before you can go to MSG school. Best of luck!
      -Josh

      +Joshjames1234 Thanks, you can find almost everything on the internet. I know the Msg is part of the"B billet".
      an that you tour three countries, over within a three year frame. an that I need a gt of 90 an the asvab I forgot. Also it stated I would need a specialty "like infantry" or an MP would do good.
      There is a side branch apart of the msg,im sure you know it, have you thought of moving up there

    • @Joshjames1234
      @Joshjames1234  8 років тому +1

      You can't choose MSG as an MOS. Many Marines, including my roommate, were combat-vet 03s. MSG is a popular special duty assignment for infantry Marines. 0311s that want to get promoted beyond staff are practically required to have an SDA (special duty assignment) under their belt, which means you can choose between DI, recruiter, or MSG.
