To the 2 people who said that the joke went over my head I didn’t even know that it was supposed to be a joke so I admit that it did go over my head; I am sorry for the inconvenience
The character known as Hornet is actually a reference to another one of team cherry’s game called Silksong. Very cool of them to put these small easter eggs
Seems kinda silly to reference a game no one has even played before. They’re better off referencing a character from a game most people have played, like hungry knight, then people can get the reference.
@@Civilchaos I think there is already a reference to Hungry Knight, I mean, the main character in Hollow Knight slightly reminds me of Hungry Knight's main character. But it's probably just me overthinking this...
Remember that the video is called _Hidden_ Easter Eggs in Hollow Knight, so if you were thinking "there's no way Dung Defender is a reference to James Corden", then you simply did not see it, because it was hidden.
I find that a bit of a stretch, since praying mantis are solitary, and the mantis village is clearly social. I mean, who knows. Maybe it’s an obscure joke for entomolgists.
Jumping is a very important mechanic in Hollow Knight, they also had a lot of jumping in Banjo-Kazooie, which was one of the the most beloved Metroidvanias of all time.
Fun fact: the Knight, Hollow Knight, Nailmasters, and other characters' use of Nails as weapons is a reference to swords, a lesser-known weapon used in combat and warfare especially in the middle ages, but all the way up to the World Wars due to their usefulness as a primary weapon as well as versatility as a sidearm. It was really cool of Team Cherry to include a reference to such an unknown part of human history.
I have a sword and I can say they did get nerfed back in the middle ages but during the controversial WW1 and WW2 updates they did get some major stat boosts which put them back in the meta
Probably been pointed out already but the Grubberfly's Elegy charm seems to be directly based off the sword beam ability in some of the Legend of Zelda games (sword fires a projectile with each slash, but only when at full health)
@ziwuri13 No reference is going to be caught by every single person that sees it. Sword beams are extremely famous in Zelda. In Zelda 1 every sword fires beams when Link is full health, in some top-down Zelda games only the Master Sword gets sword beams at full HP, in Breath of the Wild and Tears the Master Sword shoots beams instead of being throwable like every other weapon, and in Skyward Sword you can fill the blade with sunlight to fire a sword beam.
The bench in Hollow Knight is a reference to the bench in your local park near you. Signaling to the player that it's time to get out of the house and touch grass XD
WEEELL I would really loved going outside and touching grass but I can't because I LIVE IN A DESERT and skurry came and cut all the grass left years ago soooo no
I swear the fine-tooth comb this man is holding onto as he waits for silksong is just incredible his fingers have molded with the handle with just the amount of Sanity he's has until it's released.🤣
Who knows, maybe Metroid has different music copyright laws. Or maybe Samus just said it was okay. I can vividly imagine such a conversation... Samus: "Alright, FINE. You can use a song from one of my games, as long as you don't redistribute it. Or else you're gonna get a face full of Power Beam." Other Person (Too intimidated to think clearly.): "Y-Yes sir, of course!" Samus: "'SIR'?!?" ... (I couldn't help it. I'm a huge Metroid fan.)
1. You can strike candles in Jiji's place and also where the little maggots are mourning for false knight, you strike candles in almost all Castlevania games 2. From near the Watchers room, you can take a look at the city of tears through a telescope. In Symphony of the Night, you can take a look outside the castle through a telescope in Outer Wall. 3. The creatures in Colosseum of Fools who throw knifes at you do so in a very similar fashion to the axe subweapon in many Castlevania games
I think personally the biggest reference to Dark Souls on HK would just be the way the story is explained. It's not really a reference, it's more inspired by it. The lore is explained in scraps and dialogue, most of which you have to put together yourself. It's imo one of the best ways of telling a story in videogames, and even if it isn't a reference or inspiration, it's still really cool.
In fairness that is how all games used to be presented, but usually they were accompanied by a manual that held a shitton of lore and mechanic explanations. The more modern idea that DS and HK use seems to be more like Miyazaki’s famous story of reading western mythology in a language he didn’t understand, giving him a feeling of mystery in its incompleteness. Or for the players, picking up the game secondhand without the manual.
If you look closely in Hollow Knight, you can tell that most the characters are actually bugs. This is a niche reference to bugs, a type of organism that exists on Earth. Pretty cool for Team Cherry to do so, since not many people know about them.
People's faces when they realise that Geo are just bug corpses, most of Hallownest's "rocks" are also bug corpses, and the 'snow' in Kingdom's Edge is ash, thus realising Hallownest is almost literally a WORLD OF THE DEAD :O
I mean, clearly Hollow Knight is actually a giant reference to A Bug's Life, with a slight homage to the greatest animated movie of all time - The Bee Movie. That is why The Hive is absolutely the best area from Hollow Knight, to celebrate the magnificence of The Bee Movie.
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. The bee, of course, flies anyway because bees don't care what humans think is impossible. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Yellow, black. Ooh, black and yellow! Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Ooming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Oan you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. - Hear about Frankie? - Yeah. - You going to the funeral? - No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. That's why we don't need vacations. Boy, quite a bit of pomp... under the circumstances. - Well, Adam, today we are men. - We are! - Bee-men. - Amen! Hallelujah! Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to the hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. - What do you think he makes? - Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. - What does that do? - Oatches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it. Saves us millions. Oan anyone work on the Krelman? Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones. But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot. But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life. The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that. What's the difference? You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years. So you'll just work us to death? We'll sure try. Wow! That blew my mind! "What's the difference?" How can you say that? One job forever? That's an insane choice to have to make. I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life. But, Adam, how could they never have told us that? Why would you question anything? We're bees. We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth. Wait a second. Oheck it out. - Hey, those are Pollen Jocks! - Wow. I've never seen them this close. They know what it's like outside the hive. Yeah, but some don't come back. - Hey, Jocks! - Hi, Jocks! You guys did great! You're monsters! You're sky freaks! I
Yes, good! but me, I probably found a second reference of The Legend of Zelda games in hollow knight. So if you listen carefully to the music playing in the background; before having killed the dreamers Hêra (sorry if I made a mistake in her name) and before you sit down on the bench when you are in her den (name of this said zone: the den of the beast)! in short, as I told you a little earlier, if you listen carefully to the music playing in the background; Do you also have the impression to hear the music which is also played in some Zelda games? for example, when you are in a house or a store? Anyway and if not, to finish I agree with you that charm could clearly be a reference to Zelda
@@mathewsjpt yes you are probably true with this points? So, today its was probably an obvious mechanic for most videos games. But I think the first games who using this mechanic was Zelda on NES? And after this Castelvania was created and he probably take some inspiration from the first Zelda on the NES consoles but I'm not really sure about who have been taked her inspiration on each other?
I do actually like how the charm looks like sans, and is literally a dash master. While I agree that it shouldn’t be the coolest thing in the game, like too many treat it, I think it would be cool if it truly was a reference
This may sound like a stretch, but the art for the player character in Hollow Knight might be inspired by the game "Hungry Knight", a short little game by a strange developing team called "Team Cherry". I've never heard of them, but Hungry Knight seems like a cool game. I'll have to look at their other games.
This is kind of an obscure reference, but the entire game is actually just the game "Dark Souls" which is an easter egg referencing the relatively unknown game "Dark Souls"
Something that I'm surprised I rarely see talked about is that the Infection of Hollow Knight is very similar to Phazon or the X Parasites of Metroid. They both have the nature of a creepy gelatinous living goo that infects any living being it touches and controls them, but there's also the fact that both Phazon and the Infection connect the hosts to a hive mind led by Phaaze and the Radiance, respectively.
Do you ever regret making your channel about one particular franchise? And do you feel that expectations of Hollow Knight content hold you back in any way?
@@mossbag69 I for one will stick with you. I loved Hollow Knight, but not enough to watch all your videos. I do that because you're entertaining all on your own.
3:22 What a weird way to see my backer message for the first time, I must've put 100+ hours into HK and never found the Shrine of Believers. And yeah, it was a dark souls reference. Doesn't the vessel look like a little bony guy? Maybe Good Luck, Exoskeleton would've been better
It's definitely not an easy place to find, there's a moth statue in the resting grounds cemetery place that can be dream nailed, but it's not at all obvious
@@mothichorror446 agreed, I didn't find it until I was starting godmaster at about 60-80 hours. Even then I found the area but I didn't know to dream nail the statue, but saw it in a UA-cam vid.
the Midwife actually brought my mind to the cursed noh mask from episode 11 of Inuyasha, by Rumiko Takahashi. both are feminine figures with a mask that splits vertically to reveal a maw that tries to eat the main character.
Amused you didn't mention the Zelda references. Which are vague, I'll give you that, but the fact the Knight has the Spin Attack, the Master Sword beams and collects Pieces of Hearta makes me think Team Cherry likes Zelda, especially as they mention they were inspired by Zelda 2. William also mentioned liking Dragonball Z in one of the interviews so maybe the Crystal Dash is his thing. Who knows lol
Potentially it could also be that Zeldalike iconography could make people associate with positive elements of that game series therefore making their own game more marketable. Or maybe they just figured the stuff would be cool to add lol
@Minh Nguyễn That's honestly debatable considering the game is a Metroidvania-type. Not denying that Team Cherry is a fan of Zelda, but I'm sure they have their fair share of respect for the Metroid series as well. Especially considering how the game is literally progressed exactly like all the 2-D Metroid games...
I'm pretty sure the knight's "pogo stick" move is also inspired by the down thrust which is one of Link's signature moves and first appeared in Adventure of Link.
@Minh Nguyễn that’s kinda strange… I could’ve swore that their interests in Metroid games were quite evident in their interviews. Sure they talked about Zelda games when asked, but the “sparingly” mentioned Metroid has to do with the fact that one series is more popular than the other. They clearly mentioned the parallel between Samus being a familiar character in a new setting in every game and how Hornet being a powerful female character that is going to progress in a new world. Something that hasn’t been done in ANY Zelda game where the princess is the main character. But I guess that was some of the more recent interviews for the Silksong game so I don’t know which ones you’ve read/watched, but they never once said that they loved Zelda more than Metroid. They dislike certain aspects from both games sure, but that doesn’t mean one is preferred over the other…
In Kingdom's Edge, the ash that coats a lot of the surfaces looks very similar to the pollen stuff from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Additionally, the creatures seen floating around the Lake of Unn look remarkably similar to the giant flying bugs from Nausicaa. It's hard to believe that neither Ari nor William have watched Nausicaa. (Plus Nausicaa is about a dead world full of dangerous bugs so it's easy to make some connections there).
not to mention the infection in general, especially its being described as being "in the air" of the kingdom, which is much like poisonous nature of nausicaa's toxic jungles
So I know it was likely just a joke, but at least as I understand in lore, the Chozo.... HAVE actually been to every planet in the universe at some point, which is what makes their disappearance the mystery it is, as they were literally the single most prolific race in the history of ever. Oh, and side note, but I'd dare say the Midwife is WAY more like Koh the Facestealer from Avatar.
Another interesting reference: The Hollow Knight, a boss that serves as the final boss on some of the game's routes, is named after the hit indie game "Hollow Knight" by the Australian developer Team Cherry.
Buhuhuh, I see what you did there. But seriously, the “easter eggs” this UA-camr is mentioning are very weak and quite a stretch. Come on, the jellyfish are Metroid references??? Hell, then why aren’t they references to Finding Nemo? There are actual jellyfish in that movie 😏
@@michaelreynoso2201 First of all, as he said in the video, jellyfish don’t really make that much sense context-wise Second of all, the game is literally called a metroidvania, similar to how fps games were all called doom clones for awhile Third of all, the design of the small jellyfish really does look close to a metroid, with the smaller …legs? and the orb thingy
The super secret backer den also has an easter egg referencing the Super Best Friend's character Zubaz with the tablet saying "Zubug: Can you feel the storm? It's coming..." The Baz has also appeared in several other games like Divekick, Shovel Knight, Skullgirls, Slipstream, Petal Crash, and Indivisible
Having dung defender fly vertically off the screen and them come flying back down in the background could be a nod to Donkey Kong Country which has a boss that does the same thing I believe.
Not exacly. Angel's Egg wasent an Inspiration for Base Dark souls 3 it was inspiration for the Dlc Ringed City for Dark Souls 3. Princess Filianore especially.
@@draw2death421 Allegedly. It's never been confirmed by FROM or Miyazaki. Just Vatti spitballing. And he doesn't actually have anything to do with the games themselves.
@@Jopeymessmusic I do think the probability is high though since there is a lot of anime inspiration and references in the souls series, berserk is the most obvious but there are others
I think the charm you get after getting all grubs is a reference to most 2d legend of Zelda games as the charm makes you have projectiles come out of your sword at full hp and the same thing happens with the master sword in a lot of Zelda games
I think the main reason everyone compares Hollow Knight to Dark souls isn't even all the design similarities but especially the entire mood, aesthetic, and design style. Just the FEELING of it. Dark Souls was also inspired by Berserk, Angel's Egg, and is basically just a 3D metroidvania and shares tons of design philosophy with them in a new genre, so even though they apparently hadn't based the game off Dark Souls at all it probably just ended up feeling so connected because both of them are based off the same sets of other things.
There's also the overall structure of the game tbh. You're in a crumbling civilization and you go and find 3 or 4 important lore dudes, then go back to the hub area where you unlock the final boss that's responsible for the world being the way it is, and from there you decide whether to prolong it or let it end.
@@shayposting True! and the way it handles "quests" is exactly like dark souls did even, any other game there's like some big explanation/story/lore dump between characters right in your face, you get a map marker to an exact place, you go do the thing they wanted there and then something happens next as a result. done. Dark souls and then hollow knight too, there's just a few survivors hidden around this empty fallen ruined kingdom where you randomly stumble across them on your journey for brief nice moments in an otherwise empty world of only enemies, you share some little moment together and then you continue their questline if you manage to find them in another harder location later, repeat until they either realize something about themselves and find purpose or in many cases die
@@MnWEno What does a game being a souls-like even mean at this point? A difficult game? A game with an unconventional story? A game where you spend stamina for combat actions?
@@ziwuri I mean OP defines ir very well for me. A well constructed world, that tells you Its story If you look for It, that has even in game mechanics a way to tell its story. That is why, btw, that I believe Hollow Knight its the best souls-like, because it It nothing alike DS in terms of graphics, mechanics or gameplay, but they share a lot in game design philosophy, mood and aestethics
the Watcher Knights are most likely a reference to the Abyss Watchers in Dark Souls 3, by both name alone, but also how both bosses function (a pile of bodies of the same group of people slowly resurrected one after the other)
Maybe, if you forget the fact that ds3 was released in 2016, less than a year before hollow knight released, and considering that a watcher knight appears in one of the promo art for the game… the timeline simply doesn’t add up
i just realized that the main ability of the dashmaster is to be able to use dash more while sans' main gimmick is dodging attacks by moving the side they had to know
I'm pretty sure he means that he doesn't like it when references or easter eggs are tossed in haphazardly. There should a reason for the reference/easter egg like peeking into the window of hyrule castle in OoT and seeing pictures of Mario and the gang. Its a castle in a Nintendo game so it makes sense.
8:49 I can't believe it guys If you look closely at the background you can see a reference to our hopes and dreams being crushed everyday by team cherry. Amazing !
The midwife is also similar to no-face in that it seems friendly at first but then tries to eat the Knight. Also, some of midwife's dialogue alludes to her having an unending appetite, which no-face also has in the movie, consuming everything around it. I wouldn't exactly call midwife a reference either, but it is definitely inspired by no-face. There are also quite a few direct inspirations according to the Wiki Fandom, like how the charms are inspired from Paper Mario's badges, I'm not sure how many of these are true though.
6:40 I feel like the character is more of a nod towards Avatar the last Airbender. In an episode in the book of water, Aang is sent to the spirit world to find a centipede ghost that lives in a cave and steals the soul of any who show emotion around it.
I actually noticed that the Hopper and Great Hopper enemies resemble certain Faxanadu enemies, specifically Monodron and Zoradohna. I only noticed this when I started fighting a Great Hopper and recognized the attack strategy I was using.
9:25 "while there aren't any specific references, there are a lot of similarities" is exactly how I felt about Dark Souls' impact on HK. Aside from the shade, there's nothing too explicit, but so much of the themes, level design, atmosphere, storytelling, and lore unfolding seems to be at least distantly influenced by DS1. Yes, I know, Dark Souls is not the only game to do those things. But it was very very influential, and even if HK isn't directly influenced, it's definitely possible the industry was so influenced that it got to HK indirectly.
There are definitely mechanics and ideas coming from Dark Souls. But most ambitious + difficult + moody action games are gonna be drawing from Dark Souls. That’s where the good ideas are.
There was more to say about Grimm's attack patterns and those of Draculas in later Castlevania titles Also, regarding Dark Souls, remember that you're literally trekking through the ruins of an ancient kingdom filled with zombies of its old inhabitants. The comparison could not be clearer.
5:17 Oh, c'mon they`re almost identical Moreover, the second charm, Sprintmaster, looks just like Sans' brother Papyrus Also both of them have bright colors, not typical for Hallownest I don't think it's just a coincidence
Grimms rising slash attack and air drill attack seem to be referances to Darkstalkers Morrigans shadow blade and Demitris bat spin special moves. The poses are very similar and all three characters have gothic fantasy inspirations and stuff.
I can't help but draw the connections between THK and Artorious from DS. A fallen knight with the use of only 1 arm and has sacrificed himself to try and contain a great corruption. Not complaining of course, both are great.
I mean... the well that you drop down, the crystal cave, the archives, the queens garden, "Hollow" Knight, nope I think you got all of the dark souls references in the video lol. You're good.
One thing I think you missed is the connection between the False Knight and the Asylum Demon in Dark Souls. Large grey guy with a mace drops out of the ceiling and then later the floor of the boss arena falls through.
I feel like "large, imposing martial bad guy swing at you with a heavy and slow weapon" is a pretty common boss trope. Doing a second phase or boss arena by crashing through a floor or a wall is also just a convenient way of shifting the environment while still making narrative sense.
as per usual, i keep coming to Mossbag videos and learning something outside of what might be the focus this time: i learned that Yoshitaka Amano worked on Angel's Egg, which is awesome i can definitely see the style similarities with anything in this movie and those Final Fantasy concept artworks...maybe i'll be watching Angel's Egg at some point lol
I feel like Tunic has some parallels with Hollow Knight. Both are about little cute characters that go on an adventure to seek the deeper truths and secrets of an ancient kingdom/civilization. And both games have endings where you "take the final boss's place" and endings where you "break the cycle". Both characters get sealed in an object: The Knight gets sealed in the Black Egg. For the Ruin Seeker, the Shadow Oubliette. To break seals in both games, you have to collect 3 things. 3 broken seals in Hollow Knight, 3 keys in Tunic. Both games also have a world that "falls to ruin". The final bosses in both games also look older/similar to your own character. Both characters are also not the first/only of their kind. The Knight has fellow Siblings/Vessels in the Abyss while The Ruin Seeker has clones/worshippers/echoes of himself in the Cathedral. Both final bosses get infected/possessed during their battles. Both games have hidden passages. Both games have sections in their worlds that are gardens, graveyards, mines, etc. Both main characters can use Magic. Both main characters can dash quickly over gaps. Both games have areas where lots of information is kept. Hollow Knight has the Teacher's Archives while Tunic has The Library. Both the Teacher from Hollow Knight and the Librarian from Tunic use their vast knowledge to create things. Both The Knight and The Ruin Seeker have the option to kill the final boss. Both games have a mechanic to equip things that give extra effects/buffs. Both final bosses have a big sword while the main characters have small/average sized swords. And the list goes on and on and on
I'd like to mention that there's also an obscure reference in Hollow Knight coming from an open world game simulation known as "Real Life", mostly called "irl" by it's fans. irl has these weird creatures known as "bugs" or "insects", most of their designs seem to correlate to that of the enemies in Hollow Knight, and sometimes are even named after them. For example, did you know that the radiance is a reference to a creature irl known as "Moths"? Personally, I think this is a half assed thing of team cherry to do, thinking they can copy some assets off a popular game known by everyone.
Mossbag when talking about hollow knight references in other games: I love references! Mossbag when talking about hollow knight cameos in other media: I hate references.
Another reference might be the "Watcher Knights" Boss, very similar to the "Abyss Watchers" Boss from Dark Souls 3. At first you fight only one knight in a Room where a lot of dead knights lay on the floor, as the Fight progresses, more and more knights awaken from the dead, basically the same concept as with the Abyss Watchers.
5:00 it should yes be intencional because the charm is called "Dash Master" and Sans if you battle against him on genocide route has to dodge by somewhat "dashing" all your attacks. So it's probabily a very neat reference to that.
a dark decaying world with gloomy atmosphere and vague dialog from characters who are always kinda chill but actually insane they were definitely heavily inspired by dark souls
Not too much according to Team Cherry. Those are pretty common game aspects. I seem to remember them saying the biggest influences were Faxanidu and Zelda 2
@@charlieburnham39 dark souls made it common such combination for a video game direction didnt really exist before ds(dark decaying world, gloomy atmosphere, vague storytelling, cryptic dialoge etc), in fact back when hollow knight was released it was basically non existent i know they said that, i just highly doubt theyre being honest
Combine that with the similar death mechanic, checkpoint mechanic, world design, and focus on bosses/difficulty. It's not at all a dark souls ripoff or anything, but there are plenty of similarities here.
@@teratoma. I'm sure there was some influence but I think it's pretty wrong to say that Team Cherry is lying. What would they gain from that. Also, believe it or not, artists can share similarities in their work without being influenced by eachother
@@charlieburnham39 denying obvious influences as the developer has many positives and it happens all the time in different medias (e.g. a lot of battle royales that were released back in dayZ popularity days denied being inspired by it) two biggest reasons why developers deny being influenced: 1. they start being compared to that game all the time, it stops being looked at like a coherent new experience, but "like OG game with gimmicks" 2. most people dont understand how creative process works and that everything is made from influences, thats why fpses were called doom clones. Putting attention to the fact they were influenced heavily by dark souls will give people "ammunition" to call it unoriginal or even ripoff, lessening public's opinion about it chances that they coincidentally ended up with dark souls' unique direction is practically 0 chances that they lied, considering how common and benefitial it is, is very high
I know the dark souls hollow knight conversation has been done to hell, but the biggest similarity I feel between them is the feel of the world and the contrasting quirkiness of the characters that you interact with.
Have you ever looked at the movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind? Another movie focusing on insects and an infection spreading throughout the land. Lots of amazing shots of these giants insects in the background that look like they came straight out of hollow knight. It’s a movie from studio ghibli so even more of a connection since we know they’re a fan
i felt like the dashmaster to sans reference was a bit of a stretch, until i realised that while dashmaster resembles sans, sprintmaster resembles sans's brother, papyrus which immediately made me feel as though it was a purposeful reference and not an accident
This is my first time watching one of your videos, despite becoming a member of your server a while ago, blame Andriu for that, he introduced me to your server
5:15, I still think it was intentional, not only because of the colors and etc, but because of the ability it gives to you. In undertale while you are fighting sans, he will dodge any attack that will income from you, he is the only character in the undertale who can do that. Dash in HK (and in almost any other game) is the ability to quickly dodge something, and the title of a "master" represents that someone have gained enough experience to become superior in that knowledge or a skill. And since sans is the only one who can dodge he is superior Well, this theory is stupid, but it doesnt really seem like a coincidence either
Dune honestly pioneered so many good ideas and tropes that you can find it's influence anywhere. For example, the concept of "giant worm that eats shit and is terrifying" started there (or was at least popularized by it!)
i never thought about Dune that way. it ultimately makes sense. The Scattering was just an unexpected benefit, the true aim of GEoD was to preserve the worm! blessed be the maker! :)
I just realized that Sans and the dash master charm are even more connected since sans dodges your moves in the boss fight and dash master allows you to dodge more
I'd say the Hollow Knight himself is very inspired from Abysswalker Artorias from Dark Souls ,a Knight destined to face what threatens an entire kingdom (Radiance corruption and the Abyss) ,but eventually fail and become corrupted themselves, and it's by defeating this said knight that we are shown the way to where the threat comes from, from Artorias,a huge trail of blue blood coming all the way down in the abyss ,and we go in the Hollow Knight's dream in order to defeat the radiance, similiar designs and fates
Grubberfly's elegy is probably a reference to the master sword from zelda, as in some of the Zelda games, when using the sword at full hp, you will shoot a projectile resembling your sword that travels straight forward

Amused you didn't mention the Zelda references. William also mentioned liking Dragonball Z in one of the interviews so maybe the Crystal Dash is his thing. Who knows lol
Always thought the Crystal Dash was the Shinespark but that works too
Potentially it could also be that Zeldalike iconography could make people associate with positive elements of that game series therefore making their own game more marketable.

I think the charm you get after getting all grubs is a reference to most 2d legend of Zelda games as the charm makes you have projectiles come out of your sword at full hp and the same thing happens with the master sword in a lot of Zelda games
the fact those two videos have a similar yet opposite intro, and that the outro is basically an invitation to go to the others video make it very fun.

Also, some of midwife's dialogue alludes to her having an unending appetite, which no-face also has in the movie, consuming everything around it. Yes, I know, Dark Souls is not the only game to do those things. But it was very very influential, and even if HK isn't directly influenced, it's definitely possible the industry was so influenced that it got to HK indirectly.
It's kinda the effect Half-Life had on FPS games
There are definitely mechanics and ideas coming from Dark Souls. But most ambitious + difficult + moody action games are gonna be drawing from Dark Souls. That’s where the good ideas are.
Another small detail
Cornifer is vaatividya writing the story of john darksoul
There was more to say about Grimm's attack patterns and those of Draculas in later Castlevania titles
Also, regarding Dark Souls, remember that you're literally trekking through the ruins of an ancient kingdom filled with zombies of its old inhabitants. The comparison could not be clearer.
Yeah, that's clearly from the Faxanadu inspiration
Coming from your "references to hollow knight" video, I like the intro here; pretty clever, honestly!
5:17
Oh, c'mon they`re almost identical
Moreover, the second charm, Sprintmaster, looks just like Sans' brother Papyrus
Also both of them have bright colors, not typical for Hallownest
I don't think it's just a coincidence
I thought it was jack skellington
Grimms rising slash attack and air drill attack seem to be referances to Darkstalkers Morrigans shadow blade and Demitris bat spin special moves. The poses are very similar and all three characters have gothic fantasy inspirations and stuff.
if you had short term memory loss every twelve minutes you'd get stuck in a loop of mossbag easter egg videos for ever.
I can't help but draw the connections between THK and Artorious from DS. A fallen knight with the use of only 1 arm and has sacrificed himself to try and contain a great corruption. Not complaining of course, both are great.
And Artorias is a homage to Guts. It's Berserk references all the way down.
I mean... the well that you drop down, the crystal cave, the archives, the queens garden, "Hollow" Knight, nope I think you got all of the dark souls references in the video lol. You're good.
6:54 YOU ARE NOT GETTING AWAY WITH DISRESPECT TO YOKAI WATCH
One thing I think you missed is the connection between the False Knight and the Asylum Demon in Dark Souls. Large grey guy with a mace drops out of the ceiling and then later the floor of the boss arena falls through.
I feel like "large, imposing martial bad guy swing at you with a heavy and slow weapon" is a pretty common boss trope. Doing a second phase or boss arena by crashing through a floor or a wall is also just a convenient way of shifting the environment while still making narrative sense.
@@ziwuribowser
you've missed a pretty big one. if you look at both games, you'll notice that Hollow knight's and the protag from "Hungry Knight" look very similar!
Seems like a stretch tbh.
as per usual, i keep coming to Mossbag videos and learning something outside of what might be the focus
this time: i learned that Yoshitaka Amano worked on Angel's Egg, which is awesome
i can definitely see the style similarities with anything in this movie and those Final Fantasy concept artworks...maybe i'll be watching Angel's Egg at some point lol
0:03 Same. Remember when this same intro was used in another mossbag video?
But he said he loved them instead. Makes me so mad.
i think it's commendable that team cherry had the foresight to include a james corden reference while his career wasn't as huge :D
2 mossbag videos at once! What have we don’t to deserve such a blessing
Mossbag when talking about hollow knight references in other games: I love references! Mossbag when talking about hollow knight cameos in other media: I hate references.
6:54 "That annoying ass cat from Digimon"
*Inhale and exhale* It's not from digimon, it's from Yokai watch
I never ever had that thought about the Dash master charm, and now I can't get it out of my head how extremely similar it looks
Easter eggs are always my favorite things in games. They just show how many little details can be put into a game!
concept: a game where every single pixel is a reference to something
Had no idea Angel's Egg being an ispiration, now it's even better, great film
Another reference might be the "Watcher Knights" Boss, very similar to the "Abyss Watchers" Boss from Dark Souls 3. At first you fight only one knight in a Room where a lot of dead knights lay on the floor, as the Fight progresses, more and more knights awaken from the dead, basically the same concept as with the Abyss Watchers.
5:00 it should yes be intencional because the charm is called "Dash Master" and Sans if you battle against him on genocide route has to dodge by somewhat "dashing" all your attacks. So it's probabily a very neat reference to that.
a dark decaying world with gloomy atmosphere and vague dialog from characters who are always kinda chill but actually insane
they were definitely heavily inspired by dark souls
Not too much according to Team Cherry. Those are pretty common game aspects. I seem to remember them saying the biggest influences were Faxanidu and Zelda 2
@@charlieburnham39 dark souls made it common
such combination for a video game direction didnt really exist before ds(dark decaying world, gloomy atmosphere, vague storytelling, cryptic dialoge etc), in fact back when hollow knight was released it was basically non existent
i know they said that, i just highly doubt theyre being honest
Combine that with the similar death mechanic, checkpoint mechanic, world design, and focus on bosses/difficulty. It's not at all a dark souls ripoff or anything, but there are plenty of similarities here.
@@teratoma. I'm sure there was some influence but I think it's pretty wrong to say that Team Cherry is lying. What would they gain from that. Also, believe it or not, artists can share similarities in their work without being influenced by eachother
@@charlieburnham39 denying obvious influences as the developer has many positives and it happens all the time in different medias (e.g. a lot of battle royales that were released back in dayZ popularity days denied being inspired by it)
two biggest reasons why developers deny being influenced:
1. they start being compared to that game all the time, it stops being looked at like a coherent new experience, but "like OG game with gimmicks"
2. most people dont understand how creative process works and that everything is made from influences, thats why fpses were called doom clones. Putting attention to the fact they were influenced heavily by dark souls will give people "ammunition" to call it unoriginal or even ripoff, lessening public's opinion about it
chances that they coincidentally ended up with dark souls' unique direction is practically 0
chances that they lied, considering how common and benefitial it is, is very high
And since sans is the only one who can dodge he is superior
Well, this theory is stupid, but it doesnt really seem like a coincidence either
I'm pretty sure it was a joke in the video :P
@@yourlocaltraumademon ohno
@@maksimal3498 :o
Let us not ALSO forget that sprintmaster (dash masters useless counterpart) is the same color pattern as papyrus
@@reedp6638 also this, ye
After all these years, Faxanadu is still one of my favorite games of all time. An absolute classic of a game.
Giant worms being an ancient god that brings great knowledge is a pretty direct parallel between HK and Dune.
Hornet in Hollow Knight is actually a reference to this small indie game from an Australian studio, called Silksong.
5:16 ah yes the charm that makes dodging easier definitely isn’t inspired by the guy who literally just dodges everything.
6:50
"This annoying cat from Digimon"
Mmmmmmm it's from Yokai Watch, sad
(I think it's intentional)
Wow finally. After Scrolling from 100 to 100 I found you.
Yes
Jibanyan goes crazy
i love yokai watch
Yes yes yes yes and the way Artorias and THK look and like cmon it's so damn similar
@@enea_6580 similiar stance,gigantic swords,physically corrupted as well,leaking a threatening liquid
Yeah i also left a comment stating all the simularities. Im in shock that he didint even mention it!
@@Astral_Esther
They also both only have one functioning arm
All of that is itself a reference to berserk, blatantly so. To the point Artorias strikes the same damm pose as Guts.
Grubberfly's elegy is probably a reference to the master sword from zelda, as in some of the Zelda games, when using the sword at full hp, you will shoot a projectile resembling your sword that travels straight forward
