The Surface of the Moon at High Magnification

- I've been capturing 4k video of the Moon for an upcoming video and thought I would post some raw footage of it! These clips show a nearly first quarter Moon at roughly 100x, 200x and 300x magnifications through an 8 inch dobsonian telescope and iPhone 14 Pro.

Some nice views of Mare Australia and Theophilus/Cyrillus/Catharina. The false valley between the craters there is such a cool feature in that illumination.
Yes, a few days prior to first quarter phase is always my faborite time to observe and image it!
based LNA upload
Very nice work.
I appreciate that! It's such a nice target to image with a cell phone.
Nice! Recently saw photage with "items" flying across/above the surface with shadows on that ground underneath.
Continue your channel
Nice.
Thanks! It was a great night out imaging it!
Amazing views
I myself am trying to do a complete capture of all the lunar phases ,as of yet i am 4 days in and the raw data is pretty good ,hoping for a good result.
Anyways Clear Skies!!
Best of luck to you and clear skies!
So u prefer cell phone camera than dslr or astro cam for the moon shots?
I've actually found my iphone to be preferable over a DSLR for the Moon. For the planets I tend to use my DSLR camera more often!
What density filter did you use if any?
I normally will use a 13 percent lunar filter when obseving but actually didn't on this night when filming the Moon.
@@LateNightAstronomy I thought the bright part looked washed out, but wasn't sure if it was just the video quality.
Hey, do you have any free apps that are accurate and work well?
If you search the App store you will find may astronomy apps. Try a number of the free ones like "Skyview lite" or "sky guide" and then you may want to pay with one that has more features like my favorite one "Sky Safari"
@@LateNightAstronomy ok thanks cause some apps you cant zoom in far cause then u need to pay
Doesn't look very high magnification to me.
If you zoom in too far, you can see the aliens.
@@sudokode They shimmy and shake.
The final part of the video is the Moon at roughly 300x magnification. That's the max I can push it on most nights due to atmospheric turbulence.
@@LateNightAstronomy I tend to back off if the Moon starts to shimmer. I have a 150mm reflector I had the mirror refigured to .986 Strehl ratio and .08 wave and it is capable of near 380x on those rare nights when the air is cool and still all the way past the stratosphere. I pay attention to transparency and the Jet Stream when I decide to go to my Bortle One site here in New Mexico.
It helps to ask ranchers if they mind you stargazing even when it is a county road, but goes through their property.
@@MountainFisher I am envious of your bortle 1 sight! I bet you have viewed some incredible deep sky objects from that location!
