My mom works at a factory that makes heels for luxury brands like Fendi and Moschino, and she says that weird, statement shoes and transparent shoes are gonna be trendy in 2023 because it's what her and her co-workers have been working on for the past few weeks.
Woah!!! This is the type of insight I love! I know those Loewe balloon heels had a moment recently.. very interested to see what the other luxury brands do 👀 thanks so much for your comment Astrid (and Astrid’s mom!!!)
You know, now that you mention it I saw these rly odd looking maximalist multicolored heels at a DSW a few weeks ago. They rly stood out from the rest of the stock there, and now i want to get them lol
The only heels I want are those goat toe ones. I’m too old and heavy to wear heels like I used to and haven’t bought any in two years. The cloven hoof shoes are so special to me. It might have something to do with being accused of being a devil worshiper my whole life but I kind of love the aesthetic.
i love that you gave a name to 'character dressing' bc that's basically what i've been doing for a while now ! i'm get bored wayyyy too easily to stick to one singular style or aesthetic everyday and i rlly wanna embrace that this year. also my dog is called lottie she's a gremlin (i love her)
I have too! I have been referring to it as playing human barbie with myself? does that make sense? Like the characters are all kind of me, but one day i’m the hippie version, one day the corporate one then a pirate, and so on.
I like too many style aesthetics, like one day I want to be really feminine, another is my brother's old basketball shorts and an oversized shirt. Or jeans, a graphic shirt, and a flannel or cardigan. I also don't really care about my work "uniform" because 1) I wear a lime green apron over everything 2) tops are limited to navy, black, white, or lightweight denim, 3) pants are limited to knee length or longer jeans, khaki, black or navy.
I'm 3 months into a 6 month project using parted out thrifted clothing and remnants to make 7 Victorian style patchwork outfits for everyday wear. All hand sewn and in some cases using vintage lace and trim. Taking cottagecore and historical costuming down a sustainability alice in wonderland path... because I can.
oh my gosh?! oh my gosh. THIS. SOUNDS. INCREDIBLE. and like a HUGE labor of love! you're amazing! I'd love to see the final product (or in-process product) when you're done! I've always loved the visual language in alice in wonderland. awesome awesome AWESOME.
@@KathleenIllustrated Thank you for the compliment! I will do what I can as for a wardrobe reveal on facebook in April... I will have to get a camera to get decent photos. My screen shots are blurry at best.
I'm hoping cargo pieces are easier to find at my thrift this year! As a kid of the 90s nothing would make me happier than dressing my old ass in cargo pants, ringer tees and corderoy jackets. Lol
ugh i totally agree! i feel like whenever I find cargos at the thrift... they have the jogger cut at the ankle, which is not what i'm looking for!!!! fingers crossed for better luck for both of us 💕 90s kids UNITE
The best place to find cargos if you're into the wider legged variety are army surplus stores! I have 2 pairs, love them to bits, and get asked about them frequently
I kept all of the cargo pants that I bought in the 90s. Most of them were purchased from The Gap and Old Navy, on clearance. They are so much better made than most higher end ones produced now. I will wear them until they fall apart.
Working in giftware, we’re already developing our product lines for spring/summer 2024! Novelty items are by far the stand-out products from the last year, which was really exciting for my goofy goober soul.
I loved the video! I don't really care about what "is trendy", but I like that fashion is becoming more and more relaxed and unique. I don't have a dog, I have six cats, and even though nobody asked - I will share the names of all of them 😅(and I am Czech, I will translate the names.. so that might be interesting). I have three male cats - Bů (this translates to Moo - like the cow sound), Pupík (means Navel) and Pan Kulatý (Mr. Rounded). And three female cats - Yoda (she is the only one with "normal" name, named after Master Yoda), Kreveta (translates as a Shrimp) and Oplatka (wich means wafer or a biscuit). I hope you enjoyed my coment as I enjoy your videos 😅♥
I feel called out because I have seen nothing but basics and have been pursuing pieces that I am realizing are "novelties", comfy clothes that are elevated by color, design, and embellishments that do not interfere with the comfort of the garment. So I definitely agree, novelty and elevated basics, and especially for me is blending both.
@@KathleenIllustrated lol, thanks. I just work in medical research, everyone wears comfy clothes that are neutral basics. I like to be a bit of a fashion girlie but have issues with textile textures and construction so I tend towards function over form. I've been trying to make my stuff fun and "statement" pieces by adding embellishments that don't irritate my skin and use pinterest as inspiration for projects which I realize can be dressing for novelty since I'm bored by the plain things I see daily. So advancing comfy basics like described really fits with my own situation. I really hope that your discussion points come true as it will be beneficial for me options wise.
Yeah! On that same note, I've been seeing the Rag and Bone "sweatpant jeans" go viral lately. I think people are staying stubborn (myself included) on comfort, not willing to compromise anymore and brands are getting creative on how they can make something comfortable yet still functional.
the joy I got when you mentioned Baba Yaga. totally uninvited story time: My dad, when he was a young wee lad, fell down the basement stairs and to keep that from happening again his mother told him baba yoga was down there. Polish people things.
I love the idea of novelty dressing; it’s something I’ve liked to incorporate into my style for a long time with pieces that may not have something to do with the rest of my overall look, but make me smile. I guess that could be “novelty dressing lite”. Also: I love the idea of character dressing. As someone who was somewhat into the vintage style community for many years, it appeals to me: but doesn’t feel as focused and strict. I’m already a mood dresser, so the leap isn’t too far for me! Which gives me an idea: you could do a week of dressing using character ideas picked at random and developing a look for each day/character based on what you already own!
ahh casey thank you for sharing your thoughtful reaction! so cool to learn more about your "style past". also.. love the idea of that video!!! hmmmm got my gears a-turnin', my friend. 🤔
I hope character dressing does become a bigger, more mainstream trend! I love making outfits based on different characters, specific vibes, and media. The other day I wore a look inspired by Miles Edgeworth from Ace Attorney (a black blazer with matching black pants, a magenta sweater, under the blazer, and a turtleneck under the sweater) and I felt surprisingly confident in my fictional lawyer fit haha. I definitely think character dressing makes outfits feel a lot more fun, regardless of how subtle your inspiration is! :D
watching this video while making some quilted body-armour thing for no reason other than I just kinda want to, so all I can say is YES, BRING IT. I feel like the knightcore, utility, post-apocalyptic and dystopian vibes are all coming in because we know we've got more rough times ahead and the last few years have left us tempered and hardened enough to face it. But at the same time I still love my cottagecore dresses and I'm leaning hard into folk-inspired details --- I think ultimately I want clothes that make me feel like I've stepped out of a fairytale.
YES! you're going to be the best dressed person in the apocalypse! i'm very interested in this quilted-body-armor-thing 👀⭐ i totally support your everyday-fairytale goals. thank you for watchin'!
The whole character dressing and you saying “we just want to tell stories with our self expression”, absolutely yes. I myself have been doing that for a lot of years. A bit of oversharing for anyone interested or in a similuar situation: I’ve always liked fashion and considered self expression something very helpful and relevant, since I’m autistic and struggle a lot with communicating how I feel. For example, in my teen years I had a lot of trouble dressing every morning, specially while experiencing high levels of disconfort because of hypersensitivity within my skin and the touch of clothing. I was (and still am) a goth so I began taking these daily incapacities as a kind of costuming challenge, getting inspiration from fictional characters, 90s cartoons, specific tropes, etc. To this day I still get inspiration in my daily life from this little technique to cope with anxiety inducing chores. I’ve felt exhausted from trends and aesthetics and cores for a while, and look forward to your predictions. Character dressing is a great exercice for finding and feeling oneself and unique in your personal style, and this is such a fresh and cool idea. (Sorry for my bad phrasing, English is not my mother language!)
Dante! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. I can see how goth clothing especially would be tough on hypersensitive skin - so many layers and bulky accessories. I hope you try out some really cool new styles and "characters" this year, my friend ⭐
I guess I should put my predispositions aside because I wasn't expecting a real conversation after 'fashion trends from an ex-fast fashion designer,' I was expecting an entirely different tone. Thank you for being a personable source of interesting information, while being aware of the bigger picture (fashion is killing the environment) and spreading the awareness.
Omg. That last topic has been how I've felt for decades (I'm embracing the term ageless over aged lol) but what a perfect way to sum up why I've never been able to describe my "style". I just like things I like.
YT did me so right today popping you into my feed! What a delightful video. My dog Tina and I just watched and I hope your predictions are spot on. I already live that elevated homebody life, usually with a little touch of novelty. Some days the only time I leave my house is walking Tina. On the stay at home mom life currently. My neighbors get a front row ticket to my own little fashion show. I don’t think they appreciate it as much as they should but it sure makes me happy! Will be watching faithfully, absolutely love your energy and the content!
I've seen so many of these prediction videos and this is by far the best. Instead of listing specific items/ colours you presented more general themes so we can relate it to our own style journey! I rebelled against my chav dressing (trying to look like my fake friends and boyfriend) during my wayward sad years over covid. I came to a new university and met like-minded people I could actually be myself around, I felt like a butterfly coming out of a cocoon and was happy again. I dyed my hair red and wore bright mismatched colours and novelty items. It was really fun and it looked good, but sometimes I looked like I was trying too hard/fake and felt insecure at uni. I want to reflect the deeper/ more academic parts of my nature and embrace my natural beauty. I've discovered my colour season so am focused on buying clothes that fit my body type and colour while wearing ethereal makeup and learning new techniques. I look way more put together but reflecting creativity more effortlessly. I still love whimsy and am heavily inspired by The Last Unicorn cartoon and fantasy in general. Also want to develop my comfy/low-key fits (shopping for Brandy Melville) now I know my season. Also love the silver/mercury vibe.
Wow, thank you so much for your thoughtful and insightful comment!!! Having the Last Unicorn as style inspo is seriously genius. So glad to have you here, my friend!
I really love that you did fashion predictions for later into the year/next year bc some ppl will give their “future fashion trend predictions” but list stuff that are already trending. 😭 and I feel better getting stuff before in gets super popular bc then it gets more expensive, but it’s easier to find when it’s trending!
Retail buyer here… fall 23 (so far) has been lots of bright color, linen for fall/winter which apparently Europeans have been doing for awhile I’m told, suits and vests, Chanel like tweed jackets, and digital prints!
Yesss!! I’ve been saying I hope style goes this way and hearing you break it down is so heartwarming. I truly believe the best fashion era yet will be if we embrace thrifting, small creator pieces and learning to handmake our own clothes. What a fun and meaningful future
I thought we were already doing character dressing😂 Everyday i wake up and i'm like ummm who do i feel like?a second time widow whose husbands keep dying in mysterious circumstances...yes. Is grocery shopping all I have to do today?...also yes. It's so fun and it's actually bringing a lot of creativity into my style.
YES! I'll never understand it when people say "i love this (insert fancy or novelty item here, like an evening gown or vintage suit or extravagent beaded purse) but i don't have anywhere to wear it" i'm like.... why not just ... your house?!?!?!?! life's too short to wear boring clothes! love the way you think, my friend
I do this too, unless I'm going somewhere where I don't want to stand out... then my character is 'inconspicuous background extra' One of my faves is 'hipster grandpa'
@@rhiannon.de.rohan-thomas I have a friend of mine who describes his style as "slice of life protagonist," mundane but easily recognizable once you've seen him enough lol personally I prefer to go the "recognizable cameo" route for my day-to-day wear. and I really am happy to see more character dressing, I made a list of prompts for outfits a while ago and I really need to get back into that! it was really fun
I'm literally wearing my Beware The Baba Yaga shirt I was gifted from my buy nothing group (it keeps autocorrectting Baba to baby Yaga and I have an image of baby babayaga as fashion now)
wow i loved everything about the format of this video!!! it feels refreshing to hear someone talking about trends with a playful and curious perspective - i feel like you can really tell you're someone who loves self expression through clothing, rather than just an influencer who feels the pressure to always produce content about the newest newness
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! & I really appreciate your words - I want this to be a fun & curious place so I’m glad it comes across 💕💕💕🌞 hope you have a lovely weekend!
oooh when you said character dressing I was imagining low grade closet cosplay becoming casual dailywear, like disneybounding but everywhere. I know character inspired outfits were big on tiktok in 2020 and that would line up with the digital merging as a way for people to rep whatever media they're a fan of in addition to novelty. it would be fun to see that become a part of the outfit planning process. probably wouldn't fit with the focus on uniqueness coming up though.
yes, exactly!!!! maybe the uniqueness will come into play when people start dressing up like their own original characters. that would be very meta ✨🌀 Thanks for your thoughtful comment!!!
Wow I think you are 100% spot on with everything in this entire video, especially trading mesh for loose knits and the explosion of crochet. Great video
oh my gosh THE Sarah Longfield has blessed us with her presence? ALL HAIL. Glad you enjoyed the video, my friend! We'll see what actually happens in the trend-o-verse 👀
loved this type of commentary video! also just like the exposition on trends, fashion, and style :D the image overlays of diff aesthetics were tingling my stylin' fancies that i'd like to explore
Yes, I think that we are going to see a lot more loose crotchet that looks like netting, I think it's going to be really trendy in the warmer months, and a way to showcase some fun underwear, and bras for those that wear them. ( In line with the mermaid core) but also as a subversive less clothing but with a soft cozy feel, angora fuzzy wools as loose netted sweaters. I think we are going to continue to see looks that feel like things out of sub fashion in china, japan, and korea. ( the Chinese 90s blazers were all oversized business casual looks,)I think we will see some more fun large styles that that are reclaimed and unique, more DIY looks, like the things you see coming from harajuku or soul. I agree I think more people will play with different textiles, & embellishments as a result. I think we are phasing out a lot of modern eurocentric styles I think americana is going to be dying down and we will see much more diverse fashion inspo & I think we are going to see a lot more people who are raiding their cultural heritage in transforming them into modern garments from more diverse global thinking world. For example I really think we will have a lot more silky, and stain, and embellished loose garment that will be inspired from Bollywood, clothes inspired from mexica heritage, africa, and many many other place outside of the european beauty standards. I think fashion is getting bored of repeating 60s,70s, 80s,90s,20s americana and will be looking for new styles and this will cause a branch out globally, especially since we haven't seen the evolution of these other styles. I also think we will be seeing clothing inspired by cartoons as well, more nestolgic outfit, inspo from art, manga, comics, video games, and other childish things that make people happy when they look at them. More styles I think will be hot are things are aren't constricting and are very playful, I'd look up Minju Kim, molly godard, & simone Rocha. (designers) Also my dogs name is Winnie, she is a 2 year old corgi that hates wearing shoes. 💜
There are so many small clothing businesses on Instagram printing onto tshirts and embroidering jumpers, their customers seek the novelty, and although it’s better to support small businesses it increases fast fashion consumption bc so many brands are popping up now
Ahh yay I love that! I’m hoping to design a pattern for a super comfortable and elevated pleated trouser soon and this video really made me feel like I’m on the right track with the concept 😂
Wow! Most fashion perspective-expanding video I've ever seen; had to watch it more than once to absorb it. I agree with your beliefs, and understand using personal fashion to find some sense of control within an increasingly chaotic world. Small boutiques can provide a sense of connection between the consumer and the sellers especially if the sellers are creating the goods; fast fashion companies can't do that well. Thank you for sharing your professional fashion knowledge and experience with us. Your provided a richer, more reflective view fashion dynamics. I appreciate your work.
WOW Claudette, thank you so much!! I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and totally agree about smaller business owners being able form a closer bond with their customers. cheers!
Also I looooove the idea of a daily costume! So fun. I definitely find myself doing this every once in a while and it’s so fun when people notice! PS I have 3 dogs, rufus, stella and Maggie. And a black cat named Gus. They are my heart!
I love that you didn't talk only about specific items but more about overarching themes, and they actually made so much sense! Also, loved every time you showed haha. Never subscribed to someone so fast!
as a stylist i love these takes and am trying to fully lean into camp + decadence x utilitarian x comfort 🕸 i also love wearing suit pieces and 80s/90s goth babydoll looks, excited for this being more mainstream. recently ive been making an androgynous gothy dress out of my ripped up legging & other fast fashion remnants.
I LOVE the idea of interchangable patterns for today. Also, I need to know how to de-puff the giant sleeves on my 2 Love Shack Fancy/Target dresses I bought during the pandemic. I'd rather not look like I was a bridesmaid. They're such beautiful dresses.
I just started watching ( looking forward to it bc thank u) but something people also don't think about with trends are what lasts as a long lasting trend, like looking back on a certain year or era or defining fashion if you will, takes TIME. So it might be out this year or whatever, but it takes time to catch on and last. Once people realize overtime these pieces are versatile, they keep them. Most of the time when people look at fashion and "everyone is wearing this" they've been wearing it, it's been out for a year or two but is just now going from a trend to staple.
Yes! You're totally right. It's really interesting when what was once super trendy starts to feel like a staple. I bet this was the case with a lot of shoe styles that are seen as classics now. Thanks for taking the time to comment, panpan! really appreciate ya
Ok, I just watched this for the second time. I’m really blown away by how thoughtful and well put together this is!! I know nothing about fashion, yet somehow everything hit that “yup, this is correct” button in my gut. You’re a magician 🪄
The novelty discussion was so interesting to me because I definitely see this in myself in the last year without even having realized it before now! I’ve been picking up many houseware or jewelry novelties from thrifting or antique stores just because I like having a unique item to display and like the feeling of it being something special. I’m not as confident as a dresser but I love the idea of incorporating a novelty piece here and there into my more safe style choices.
With your last prediction about futuristic patterns in fashion, I could totally see that! I'm seeing how science and fabric combine to make silhouettes that change colors in the sunlight (super cool) and the dress painted on Bella Hadid at the Coperni show. I'm excited to see what's next!
Yes!!! One of the cool things about "futuristic" items is that they're really looking forward instead of replicating the past (well, maybe they're inspired by the past but we have much more robust fabrication technology now!) thanks for watchin, jess :)
I love love love your vibe! It took me til my late thirties to dress the way I wanted to, and just really *fully* experimenting in the last six months. I’m so ready for the world to be free in expressing their style, including myself (I *just* am to the point of having minimal anxiety about if people will think I look stupid or silly. It doesn’t matter, but it does, ya know?) And my dog is Bogie, the 120lb lad who turned ten years old on Wednesday 🥳 he is, in fact, the very best!
Please phone belt holsters / utility belts - I love comfort (think yoga pants) but need to keep items on me at my work so they’re impractical! Utility belts are a perfect mix of dystopian meets comfort and it’s all I want (in a fashionable sense of course!)
Thank you for conceptualizing trend predictions in such a fun way! As a middle boomer I have fond memories of a more democratized approach to how clothing options would go viral (we just used that old-fashioned word "popular") and how sometimes teenagers make up their own trends (I'm remembering a summer of hideous huaraches that nobody but us wore). A perennial "mod" in my heart of hearts, I think that silhouette pairs well with the new monochromatics. As I shop my closet I'll be looking for ways to bring 1964 back into my life. Goes well with grey hair! (I miss all my dogs; Peggy, Petie, Penny and Mister Lucky, who was also around in 1964).
I love this video so much. I feel seen because I've been shifting and developing my style in the direction of "matrix" core if no other reason than my 12 year old self wanted to so bad but never could or would. Just in general so many of the current trends give me a big spectrum of sci fi movie energy, whether that's classic 60s sci fi or futuristic royalty. I love it. Great video! ✌️💜
You're totally right with the "character dressing", it's so much fun! Since 2020 I'm trying different little ways to make daily-life a bit lighter, I hope more people discover the joy you can have with this. I have pretty basic clothes but even those you can combine for different stories and personalities instead of just a nice balance. Some days I just want to feel like a grumpy fishermen on a rainy day by a lake, or like a police officer from an oldschool picture book...all without being costumy but the vibe is real ✨️^^
omg yes exactly! I feel like “costume-y” denotes inauthenticity or cheapness.. but when we build with our own wardrobes, the look ends up having depth and a story. So cool!
character dressing is so much fun, I hope it continues to be popular and more people try it out for themselves. I also want to say: Since you have similar hair and facial features like I do it makes me feel really happy watching you style cool outfits and it boosts my confidence a lot!
love this!! can’t wait to see some of your predictions irl. i love the idea of telling stories with clothing and would love to see others mix aesthetics rather than confine themselves to one, i just hope it will be done in a sustainable way 🧡 p.s. i have a pittie name spike who also really enjoys your videos
omg spike!!!! hi bby! yess totally agree about mixing aesthetics. it really embraces the idea of "wearing whatever you want". confining ourselves is soooo 2022 😉
I’ve watched plenty of trend videos in the past week and really enjoy what you had to say. I have kept hearing the same things, but your further thought into the trends are interesting and cool. For the comfy home trend- makes sense why others are saying pj pants as regular pants will be (or are) trending. Also my dogs name is Korra she’s a golden retriever :)
okay first of all, korra, here's a lil kiss for you 💕💋. i know it's difficult work being the avatar and you need all the kiss fuel you can get! secondly - thank you paige! let's make 2023 our comfiest year YET!
ive been kind of character dressing since february while our school isn't making our uniforms mandatory for this semester -- my style for the day is deliberate and each piece has a reason for being there (i match my outfit with my outputs in art school). the impression people have that theyve told me is that im fashionable and recognizable even from afar, with the silhouettes im wearing. (but i can only do so much within university guidelines)
Wait I need more backstory! I love the peek into your experience in the fashion designer world! So interesting! My dog is my sunshine boy and his name is axel
I think u can (somewhat like lightly get an idea of) predict trends by having a solid background in Japanese street fashion tbh as someone who wears lolita and knows a tonnnn about japanese fashion history, current trends seem to be reusing themes from j fashion and catching up to it very slowly. Look up cult party kei to see a good example, the aesthetic of this style was recently very popular, while not using the name cult party kei
thank you for sharing your perspective. i love to hear people talk about concepts and trends in this bigger picture kind of way rather than specific pieces. very inspiring :)
It's fun to see what is going to be fashionable and try to emulate it. But by buying minimally and second hand. While also looking for items that won't fall apart. It can be exhausting and tbh I can wear my pj bottoms and graphic t and I'd be good.
Costume dressing is soooo how I feel about the way I dress, everyday my outfits are from completely different aesthetics and I even love to style the same pieces differently!!!
I’ve definitely been wanting more novelty pieces lately. I have a vision in my head of statement pieces that incorporate metals and gemstone. I’m thinking like cardigans or corset style things that are additions to an outfit rather than a main piece. And I’m a jeweler so I’m thinking I might start making these things and seeing how it goes
Yes!!! I love this idea. That way you can add your "statement" pieces to lots of outfits. We love options! Would love to see what you come up with if you end up pursuing these creations, samantha!
im glad this video was recommended to me , ur vibe is its own thing and i dont feel like its dior type fashion videos, or gen z influencer invtied to fashion week vibe. i subbie
Loved this! It sounds plausible to me. Seen the JPG bodymorph print pop up a few times. Björk swan dress and tiny space buns seems just around the corner to me. No dog but a pet shrimp called spiderella. Love your videos, vibe and weirdness. 👍
You've just put a name to what I'm currently experimenting with - character dressing! I feel like being playful and change character/costume from day to day
Recently discovered your channel and am really enjoy your content and delivery. Thanks! No dog currently, but I see 2024 trends less futuristic and more "grab-n-go," but not in the fast fashion sense. I see easy care, street presentable comfortable outfits that reflect the wearer's personality.
Your intro made my laugh right out loud! 😂 I am 100% here for the androgynous looks, the cargo pants, and the continuation of 90's fashion. My personal style is very dark-academia-grandpacore with a grungy vibe so I'm ready for all of those. ❤ I don't have a dog, but my cat's name is Butterscotch and 2 years ago I rescued him from the woods behind the elementary school where I used to work. That's not him in my pfp, but he honestly looks like a soft fluffy anime kitty come to life.
lol i'm glad!! also.. your aesthetic sounds amazing. like you're a grandpa with a BACK STORY. PS hi butterscotch! you sound like the cutest kitty.. also with a back story!!!
I’ll be 70 this year and right now I am wearing a bubblegum pink leather jacket over a sweatshirt featuring a cartoon mushroom and the words, Be Magical and straight leg jeans. I’m about to put on my army green crocs and go to the grocery store. I’m also wearing a pale jade stretchy bead bracelet and silver hoop earrings. I don’t wear makeup (I never have) and wear my hair pulled back into a high(ish) pony tail. I appreciate that your video caused me to evaluate my fashion choices and how I present myself to the world although I’m not sure what to make of it 🤔. Just be yourself is the best I can come up with. I don’t have a dog, but if I did, I would name him Noodle.
I love this, Beth! Thanks for sharing. I think trends are interesting to learn about but I usually just do my own thing, just like you! Your style sounds fun & colorful - keep bein you!!
Your predictions are pretty much on the nose with how I'm approaching fashion now! I was like :o the whole video, would love if more people continued to get experimental with clothing!
I'm always character dressing when I pick an outfit since forever I thought that's how everyone dressed?? Even to a small extent like I'm putting out tortured hard working student in the night dark academia vibes vs today I'm a modern high achieving power worker who's on it or dressing for the beach holiday vibes I wish I was on during summer. It may not be statement characters just ones that blend in with the crowd but if you're a conscious dresser you're picking a mood/vibe and showing a character you've constructed in your mind through the way you dress. Like when people search what to dress to an interview/party/gallery/concert you're dressing as a character that looks the part. What I think is interesting is the characters that don't match their environment, or the more fantastical/media inspired one. Basically the people that get called weird but are the ones that have actual own sense of styles.
that's a great point! love that you follow your own vibes/feelings when choosing your outfits 💯 & i love your point about folks who clash with their environment in pursuit of personal style. we humans are always searching for contrast!
Cool! I wear overalls and fun shirts underneath everyday at work, so that almost checks a little of each box. I’ll get a see thru shirt haha, I live another season.
The character dressing thing you talked about is what I do everyday 💀 I'm in a few subcultures and I have ADHD so I'll be coquette one day and emo the next day. When I say emo I mean like actual myspace skinny jeans emo. Oh the. The next day I'll dress 1970s or 1980s business casual
I was in high school for the 80’s, and I remember the toy ET’s were everywhere. One classmate carried around a beanie baby Purple ET - her PET. Nothing cuter than an alien stuffie 👽
I'm ready for Singer to make a bunch of money. BRING BACK MAKING/ALTERING YOUR OWN CLOTHES! Some ways you can alter your own clothes without dropping $200 on a sewing machine: -Empower yourself with basic handstitching. Get Bernadette Banner's book or just look up youtube vids, and you suddenly realize you can sew a new collar/pocket/trim on just about anything in a couple hours or less. -Darning. Darning is so darn easy!! Look up a video and never throw your favorite socks or garments with holes away again. Plus you can do it in fun colors to make a statement. -Weaving. Hear me out here: this is definitely the slowest thing I do, but I like that about it. You can create a small hand loom out of a thrifted sturdy picture frame, and boom you're making your own cloth. Other tips: -thrift yarn. Little old ladies get rid of yarn stashes all the time and it's wayyy cheaper than the craft stores. I've even found hand-spun yarn. -search for small sewing stores near you. They will likely have cooler fabirc for the same price or cheaper and you might make friends. My local store even has sewing nights where you can use their machines!
I think you’re spot-on. I’m already seeing these things emerge. 90s lady suits? Yes, look at Drew Barrymore’s show wardrobe. Futurism - Y2K inspired yes! What better way to make up for time lost in the pandemic than launching oneself into the future. But also, I’m seeing the early tingles for 1970s channeling medieval romantic revival thanks to fairy/witchcore meeting validation of Daisy Jones & the Six. Like you said, everything goes! 💃
this video made me so optimistic for the future! i absolutely love the idea of democratizing fashion and unleashing this huge set of knowledge on pattern making, knitting, sewing and crocheting on the internet so that everyone can try themselves in making their own clothes and places like youtube can become a great free learning and sharing community. thank you so much!!
I've been trying to do character dressing for so long! I love looking different every day. The downside is you have to have a lot in your closet. Which is expensive. lol
Dude. I have been doing “unified creative expression” for about 30 years, with evolution according to need and occasion. Interested to see all the pics I receive with the message “saw this and thought of you.” And if those items last long enough to land in the thrifts, I’ll be able to stock up.
Interesting I’ve noticed most girls that I know reverting back to a more minimalist look with basics and hanging up the crazy patterns and bright colors that have saturated the past few years. But what do I know!
My thought about novelty dressing is that it won't last despite being super fun, and won't have much rewearability until it becomes retro.... Maybe they should make time capsules for clothes so that they stay in good condition until they come back in fashion haha
right - especially if people are trend-chasing the novelty items instead of picking ones that really resonate with them. I love the time capsule idea! part of the reason I adore estate sales
My style is varies from: 1. Did I even do my laundry? 2. Who let this 33 year old woman into the Claire’s? Are those flared jeans with rhinestones? Why so much glitter? 3. Elle Woods work attire. My students love it! 4. I’m on my period, so black is the only choice. I am hoping the Barbie movie sparks more pink!
lol! this is the collection of aesthetics that i need in my life. i love it! and i'm ALSO very curious how Barbie is going to take the trend world by storm. I personally hope it brings rollerblading back into vogue 'cause I love my blades! 🌸✨
This my first video of your that I've watched and I'll say that I think your predictions are pretty on.. I love the idea of character dressing as I think that is kind of what I going towards. As a vintage shop owner, and with the size inclusivity ramps up, I've been trying my hand at vintage style (and other styles I try to offer in store) for myself. This kind of means I dress differently al.ost every day.. and then dress my previous normal for my regular weekday job... I thought maybe I was doing something a bit wierd by being all over the place style wise.. but maybe I'm just character dressing... love it!
@@aleisterlilywhite1109 I hear you. Something about being surrounded by fundies makes me want to lean into the whole Satanic aesthetic. 😂
Oh do you mean tabis?! I LOVE a split toe moment!!! I have a few flat pairs but would love some heeled ones some day 👀 🐐
i love that you gave a name to 'character dressing' bc that's basically what i've been doing for a while now ! i'm get bored wayyyy too easily to stick to one singular style or aesthetic everyday and i rlly wanna embrace that this year. also my dog is called lottie she's a gremlin (i love her)
Ahh so happy to hear that!!! Also lottie pup sounds like… well, the best dog in the world, to be honest!! 💕💕💕
I have too! I have been referring to it as playing human barbie with myself? does that make sense? Like the characters are all kind of me, but one day i’m the hippie version, one day the corporate one then a pirate, and so on.
I’ve also heard it called ‘history bounding’ especially when your characters take on a more vintage/antique style
B Jones Style has called it Character Dressing for years.
@@catherineleslie-faye4302 Please do post the link in this thread when you post it, because this idea of yours is marvelous!!!!
How is your project going? Maybe even finished? Please let us know where to find the pictures. This sounds amazing!
Did you ever finish?
I'm hoping cargo pieces are easier to find at my thrift this year! As a kid of the 90s nothing would make me happier than dressing my old ass in cargo pants, ringer tees and corderoy jackets. Lol
ugh i totally agree! i feel like whenever I find cargos at the thrift... they have the jogger cut at the ankle, which is not what i'm looking for!!!! fingers crossed for better luck for both of us 💕 90s kids UNITE
Ringer tees! ❤ I still have a lady and the tramp one but damn why do ringer tees look so cool
I will wear them until they fall apart.
i like cargos
Working in giftware, we’re already developing our product lines for spring/summer 2024! Novelty items are by far the stand-out products from the last year, which was really exciting for my goofy goober soul.
Wow!! This is the gold-mine insight we’ve grown to love from 🦄 🥩!!!!
Do you use WGSN?
fellow goofy goober soul here, VERY exciting news
We love a goofy goober gal
I love your cat names omg so cute !
@@mennamohamed2338 Thanks! My boyfriend and I really enjoy naming our cats 😄
This is adorable omg, all of them sound cute but I love Oplatka 😭
I didn’t know I need this comment but I did, I enjoyed reading your cat’s names ahah
To jsou geniální jména, my máme doma Mikeše a Vendulku, typicky český kocour😂
I feel called out because I have seen nothing but basics and have been pursuing pieces that I am realizing are "novelties", comfy clothes that are elevated by color, design, and embellishments that do not interfere with the comfort of the garment. So I definitely agree, novelty and elevated basics, and especially for me is blending both.
devin... are you from the future?! sounds like you're way ahead of the curve, baby! (thank you for watching!!!) 💕
Polish people things.
oh my gosh I bet he learned his lesson LOL horrifying
A bit of oversharing for anyone interested or in a similuar situation:
I’ve always liked fashion and considered self expression something very helpful and relevant, since I’m autistic and struggle a lot with communicating how I feel.
As an almost 2024 human, I think your predictions are pretty good
I guess I should put my predispositions aside because I wasn't expecting a real conversation after 'fashion trends from an ex-fast fashion designer,' I was expecting an entirely different tone. Thank you for being a personable source of interesting information, while being aware of the bigger picture (fashion is killing the environment) and spreading the awareness.
thanks for giving the video a chance, kevin!!! i appreciate you bein' here :o)
Omg. That last topic has been how I've felt for decades (I'm embracing the term ageless over aged lol) but what a perfect way to sum up why I've never been able to describe my "style". I just like things I like.
keep bein you, my friend! it seems like its been working for you so far :)
Aw jeeze, you and Tina are just the best!!! So glad to have y’all here & thank you for your thoughtful comment, kirstie!
😭 and I feel better getting stuff before in gets super popular bc then it gets more expensive, but it’s easier to find when it’s trending!
thanks for your thoughtful comment, natalie! i'm glad you enjoyed the vid my friend
Retail buyer here… fall 23 (so far) has been lots of bright color, linen for fall/winter which apparently Europeans have been doing for awhile I’m told, suits and vests, Chanel like tweed jackets, and digital prints!
I'm so excited for the unified story throughline, where outfits are pushed in cool/unique but elevated/sophisticated/thorough ways
right?! me too. let's make it happen
Yesss!! I’ve been saying I hope style goes this way and hearing you break it down is so heartwarming. I truly believe the best fashion era yet will be if we embrace thrifting, small creator pieces and learning to handmake our own clothes. What a fun and meaningful future
agreed & agreed & agreed! So glad you enjoyed the video.. and equally glad to have you here!
I thought we were already doing character dressing😂
Everyday i wake up and i'm like ummm who do i feel like?a second time widow whose husbands keep dying in mysterious circumstances...yes.
I do this too, unless I'm going somewhere where I don't want to stand out... then my character is 'inconspicuous background extra'
One of my faves is 'hipster grandpa'
Cosplayers be like 👁
Oh absolutely. I'll go to the doctor's dressed as a vampire housewife, I don't give a fuck
@@rhiannon.de.rohan-thomas I have a friend of mine who describes his style as "slice of life protagonist," mundane but easily recognizable once you've seen him enough lol
personally I prefer to go the "recognizable cameo" route for my day-to-day wear. and I really am happy to see more character dressing, I made a list of prompts for outfits a while ago and I really need to get back into that! it was really fun
ok what trends are we starting in 2023? Still a proponent of Babayagaesthetic 🧙♀️
I'm literally wearing my Beware The Baba Yaga shirt I was gifted from my buy nothing group (it keeps autocorrectting Baba to baby Yaga and I have an image of baby babayaga as fashion now)
I not a fan but I call it, big belts are gonna make a comeback
@@TheThriftedApothecary LOL baby yaga, so slay. that tshirt sounds AMAZING!
you and moderngurlz are on point for 2023-24 it's kind of wild
🔮 we must be on the same wavelength!!! Thanks for watchin’, my friend :)
wow i loved everything about the format of this video!!! it feels refreshing to hear someone talking about trends with a playful and curious perspective - i feel like you can really tell you're someone who loves self expression through clothing, rather than just an influencer who feels the pressure to always produce content about the newest newness
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! & I really appreciate your words - I want this to be a fun & curious place so I’m glad it comes across 💕💕💕🌞 hope you have a lovely weekend!
"I have bangs and a microphone. My opinion is now your problem" 😂😂😂😂😂
🤷 haha whaaaat can i say
oooh when you said character dressing I was imagining low grade closet cosplay becoming casual dailywear, like disneybounding but everywhere. I know character inspired outfits were big on tiktok in 2020 and that would line up with the digital merging as a way for people to rep whatever media they're a fan of in addition to novelty. it would be fun to see that become a part of the outfit planning process. probably wouldn't fit with the focus on uniqueness coming up though.
yes, exactly!!!! maybe the uniqueness will come into play when people start dressing up like their own original characters. that would be very meta ✨🌀
Thanks for your thoughtful comment!!!
Disneybounding came to my mind as well
Wow I think you are 100% spot on with everything in this entire video, especially trading mesh for loose knits and the explosion of crochet. Great video
oh my gosh THE Sarah Longfield has blessed us with her presence? ALL HAIL. Glad you enjoyed the video, my friend! We'll see what actually happens in the trend-o-verse 👀
loved this type of commentary video! also just like the exposition on trends, fashion, and style :D the image overlays of diff aesthetics were tingling my stylin' fancies that i'd like to explore
tingle those fancies!!!! so glad you enjoyed it, diana.
Really loving the futuristic vibes and transformation from childhood prints to the surreal iterations of such
it's cool, right?! so glad you enjoyed the vid, ains! thank you
Yes, I think that we are going to see a lot more loose crotchet that looks like netting, I think it's going to be really trendy in the warmer months, and a way to showcase some fun underwear, and bras for those that wear them.
(designers)
Also my dogs name is Winnie, she is a 2 year old corgi that hates wearing shoes.
💜
There are so many small clothing businesses on Instagram printing onto tshirts and embroidering jumpers, their customers seek the novelty, and although it’s better to support small businesses it increases fast fashion consumption bc so many brands are popping up now
This was such a fun analysis! I am HERE for the "elevated homebody" trend. Comfortable and fashionable is my happy place!
Ayyy thanks Jessica, glad you’re here! I am ALSO a big fan of comfort being more fashionable. Soft pants 4 ever 💕💕
I really appreciate your thoughtful comment and totally agree about smaller business owners being able form a closer bond with their customers. cheers!
I think your right about the chunky knit wear as my crochet club has started moving in that direction already and I love it
oh reeeeee-eee-eeeally? interesting!!!! also crochet club sounds AMAZING.
Also I looooove the idea of a daily costume! So fun. I definitely find myself doing this every once in a while and it’s so fun when people notice! PS I have 3 dogs, rufus, stella and Maggie. And a black cat named Gus. They are my heart!
Oh my gosh what a fun furry family you have! Is that Gus in your profile pic? Tell him I say hi, please!!!
I love that you didn't talk only about specific items but more about overarching themes, and they actually made so much sense! Also, loved every time you showed haha. Never subscribed to someone so fast!
as a stylist i love these takes and am trying to fully lean into camp + decadence x utilitarian x comfort 🕸 i also love wearing suit pieces and 80s/90s goth babydoll looks, excited for this being more mainstream. recently ive been making an androgynous gothy dress out of my ripped up legging & other fast fashion remnants.
ahhh the suits + goth babydoll is giving me big Vivianne Westwood energy 💕😭 so cool to hear about your most recent projects. keep makin'!!!!
You’re a magician 🪄
hahahaha i hope i can hit the "yup this is correct" button every time i share my opinion
The novelty discussion was so interesting to me because I definitely see this in myself in the last year without even having realized it before now! I’ve been picking up many houseware or jewelry novelties from thrifting or antique stores just because I like having a unique item to display and like the feeling of it being something special. I’m not as confident as a dresser but I love the idea of incorporating a novelty piece here and there into my more safe style choices.
i love that you show off your personal style in non-fashion ways!! Your home sounds like a cool conversation-starter wonderland 💞
It doesn’t matter, but it does, ya know?)
And my dog is Bogie, the 120lb lad who turned ten years old on Wednesday 🥳 he is, in fact, the very best!
(I miss all my dogs; Peggy, Petie, Penny and Mister Lucky, who was also around in 1964).
aw, fellow kathleen! thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! i love hearing about your experience with style & love for "mod". 💋🐕💋🐕💋🐕💋🐕
I'm so down for more suits. My whole wardrobe is just my spin on fem tailored business casual.
& it sounds like an INCREDIBLE WARDROBE what the heck?! Amazing. 🤌🏼✨
it's so fun, right? i love to hear that you're exploring the styles that your inner child would love. that's the best!
I also want to say: Since you have similar hair and facial features like I do it makes me feel really happy watching you style cool outfits and it boosts my confidence a lot!
aw, hey twin!!!
love this!! can’t wait to see some of your predictions irl. i love the idea of telling stories with clothing and would love to see others mix aesthetics rather than confine themselves to one, i just hope it will be done in a sustainable way 🧡 p.s. i have a pittie name spike who also really enjoys your videos
omg spike!!!! hi bby!
yess totally agree about mixing aesthetics. it really embraces the idea of "wearing whatever you want". confining ourselves is soooo 2022 😉
Yessss we want juicy behind the scenes fashion stories!
👀 🍵 maybe a Q&A vid is in order heh
you just put into words every SINGLE trend prediction I had in the smartest way ever, AMAZING
oh my gosh stop! that's too kind and my brain says thank you 💕💋 you the best, kyler
I am a crocheter and love to see crochet ANYTHING coming into fashion, then I am fashionable.
loved hearing Breezy Slide in the background what a crossover!
Yes!!!!! BDG & Louie can do no wrong 👏🏼✨
thank you for sharing your perspective. i love to hear people talk about concepts and trends in this bigger picture kind of way rather than specific pieces. very inspiring :)
sarah! i'm so glad you enjoyed - thanks very much!
It's fun to see what is going to be fashionable and try to emulate it. But by buying minimally and second hand. While also looking for items that won't fall apart. It can be exhausting and tbh I can wear my pj bottoms and graphic t and I'd be good.
Wow! THIS is how you do a trend prediction video ❤ amazing research, I loved hearing your explanations.
Damn, thanks hannah! That means a lot coming from you! 💕❤️
The character dressing resonates so much with me
This is the best trend video by far and I’ve binged so many!!
So glad you enjoyed Sophie! Thanks for being here :)
I love the way you speak. No “like, like, like, umm, umm, literally, like literally, idk, idk like” thank you.
thanks Mar! writing it all down first helps 😉✨
Costume dressing is soooo how I feel about the way I dress, everyday my outfits are from completely different aesthetics and I even love to style the same pieces differently!!!
heck yeah pickle eater you're speakin' my language!!!!
Would love to see what you come up with if you end up pursuing these creations, samantha!
im glad this video was recommended to me , ur vibe is its own thing and i dont feel like its dior type fashion videos, or gen z influencer invtied to fashion week vibe. i subbie
aw dang batsnbadgers, i appreciate that! really glad you enjoy the vibe ✨🌼
Loved this! It sounds plausible to me. Seen the JPG bodymorph print pop up a few times. Björk swan dress and tiny space buns seems just around the corner to me. No dog but a pet shrimp called spiderella. Love your videos, vibe and weirdness. 👍
Looooove this video! I love the research and commentary! I feel like my closet is the embodiment of elevated homebody 😂
Lol! I think that totally tracks, my friend 🍵 glad you liked it!!!
You've just put a name to what I'm currently experimenting with - character dressing! I feel like being playful and change character/costume from day to day
yes! so playful!!! you're ahead of the curve, airin!!! 💕
Recently discovered your channel and am really enjoy your content and delivery. Thanks! No dog currently, but I see 2024 trends less futuristic and more "grab-n-go," but not in the fast fashion sense. I see easy care, street presentable comfortable outfits that reflect the wearer's personality.
thank you mikel!
"I have bangs and and a microphone, of course I'm going to make my opinions your problem."
Felt.
it's a lifestyle, baby ✨
Your intro made my laugh right out loud! 😂 I am 100% here for the androgynous looks, the cargo pants, and the continuation of 90's fashion. My personal style is very dark-academia-grandpacore with a grungy vibe so I'm ready for all of those. ❤
I don't have a dog, but my cat's name is Butterscotch and 2 years ago I rescued him from the woods behind the elementary school where I used to work.
Omg knightcore please, I need giant puffy shirts and chain maille
i will go to war for knightcore. WAR!!!!
i love character dressing so much, i do it all the time. just pick a theme / costume for the day and im ready to go
Character dressing!!!!! I don’t shop much for a bunch of reasons but I love your videos!
Your predictions are pretty much on the nose with how I'm approaching fashion now! I was like :o the whole video, would love if more people continued to get experimental with clothing!
Nice! Yes, I really hope people keep exploring their own expression and paying less attention to what is "cool" :) Thanks so much for watching, moya!
Love this! I like how every prediction has been used in Kpop. Keep up the great vibes
woah... that's a great observation! round of applause for their stylists. they. never. MISS! (thanks for watching, new friend!!!)
@@KathleenIllustrated thank You for your awesome channel
The predictions towards the end of the video were so good
I'm always character dressing when I pick an outfit since forever I thought that's how everyone dressed??
Hehe add a chain mail shirt to the list and it shall be COMPLETE! That would be such a vibe: hardcore farmer. Thanks for watchin!
YES! You're living my fashion dreams!!! I was definitely a myspace emo kid so I'm really glad to have a kindred spirit lol. thanks for watchin'!
@@KathleenIllustrated haha yup experimenting with fashion is really fun!!
I was in high school for the 80’s, and I remember the toy ET’s were everywhere. One classmate carried around a beanie baby Purple ET - her PET. Nothing cuter than an alien stuffie 👽
I gave my boyfriend an alien stuffie not too long ago!! They’re the cutest!! 💚👽
I'm ready for Singer to make a bunch of money. BRING BACK MAKING/ALTERING YOUR OWN CLOTHES!
Some ways you can alter your own clothes without dropping $200 on a sewing machine:
-Empower yourself with basic handstitching.
Other tips:
-thrift yarn.
THANK YOU for sharing this guide!!!! It should be published ✨ totally agree about thrifting yarn/supplies in general. So much goodness to be found!
Bring on the novelty! I've been obsessed with dressing like an art teacher à la Ms. Friezel and never felt happier
oh my gosh, 100%!!!!!! Glad you enjoyed it!
B Jones style dresses up by imaging characters and I have completely embraced this idea!
LOVE. I want to do character dressing for sure. And I'm going to MAKE MORE of what I wear this year!
yesss! go carra go carra go! I mean, you make walt some SICK outfits from goodwill.. just gotta size 'em up and you'll be able to rock them too!
this video made me so optimistic for the future! i absolutely love the idea of democratizing fashion and unleashing this huge set of knowledge on pattern making, knitting, sewing and crocheting on the internet so that everyone can try themselves in making their own clothes and places like youtube can become a great free learning and sharing community. thank you so much!!
so so glad you enjoyed, Yolanda!!
I feel like I’ve been character dressing for years and never had a name for it so THANK YOU. LOVE this
You’re a pioneer!! hehe so glad you enjoyed, thanks for watchin 💕
I've been trying to do character dressing for so long! I love looking different every day. The downside is you have to have a lot in your closet. Which is expensive. lol
PLEASE I'M SO READY FOR THE DIGITAL AESTHETIC I HOPE IT TRENDSSS
hehe! make it happen, my friend!!! ⭐✨
why do i believe you on everything because like i want to elevate my fashion im graduating in a month and i can’t wait to morph into a new person!
congrats on graduation, my friend!
Dude. I have been doing “unified creative expression” for about 30 years, with evolution according to need and occasion. Interested to see all the pics I receive with the message “saw this and thought of you.” And if those items last long enough to land in the thrifts, I’ll be able to stock up.
I absolutely loved everything about this! Knowing how creative you are I can’t wait to see what you’re up to for 2023! ❤❤❤
I love the way you speak, you're funny and fun, your ideas seem spot on but honestly I'd be convinced by you anyway
ps. I don't have a dog so no name for a dog that is mine, however, supplementary info, I have a cat
aw lil bee! i'm so glad you enjoyed the video :o) and also glad to know you have a sweet lil' kitty. give 'em a boop for me please! 🐈
omg who knew paris and alexis were two sides of the same coin? i'm here for it!!!! (thank you so much for watching!)
My style is varies from:
I thought maybe I was doing something a bit wierd by being all over the place style wise.. but maybe I'm just character dressing... love it!
You’re way ahead of the curve, my friend 💕 thanks so much for sharing!
