Growing up, I was captivated by the likes of Nigel Benn, Eubank, Tyson, and Lewis. Back then, boxing felt like a genuine competition between warriors. Saw Tyson Fury's first pro fight and thought he was a joke. Now, he's considered one of the greatest, but after seeing him struggle against someone who's never boxed professionally, I feel like the curtain's been pulled back. Boxing's not the sport I fell in love with anymore.

You’ve got a point, if you have a sport where the best compete against the best it will only raise the skill level and elitism of the sport. Boxers today are sheltered for 95% of their career and even when they become champion of the world they only occasionally fight the truly elite guys, you literally have world champions fighting part time taxi drivers regularly, that can only lead to a drop in skill overall in the sport

We all know why Francis dominated that fight. 4 reasons.
    1. The Ridge Wallet was keeping his cash secure, so he had a clear head in the ring.
    2. Magic Spoon Cereal gave him a big energy boost.
    3. Manscape helped him cut some weight and kept him moving fast.
    4. The most important reason; he got his real training from Uncle Chael which allowed him to dominate the clinch and send Fury to the ground. The very same technique that Uncle Chael used break Jon Jones toe, after which Lord Chael felt bad and allowed Jon to borrow his one of his many Championship Belts.

Chael I think the point everyone is missing is that "Francis" is naturally talented. He went to MMA so late and won, and now he boxed and knocked-down Fury while giving a splendid performance. I think it's not about the stuff you're talking about, those rules apply to all normal humans. Meanwhile Francis is naturally gifted just like Jones. I bet if Francis was trained like Jones, he'd have defeated not only Jones but also humiliated Fury too, that's how talented Francis is. He's an outlier and deserves all the respect. Conor wasn't even close to what Francis has done without proper training.

Story for yas...in my youth I boxed amateur for 10 years starting at age 7. I coached for a couple years after and got into karate. I tested for my purple belt and one of the instructor judges noticed my hands during the spar component and invited me up to instruct his black belts who were a traveling full contact competitive crew. I agreed and he made each one spar me with no kicks, only hands, full on Go! Long story short it didn't go well for adult men who had been told they were the most dangerous humans on the planet and some 19 year old kid came in and cleaned house...badly. shockingly. Even I couldn't believe it. It was so bad that they refused to allow their main instructor to have me back. Humility is sometimes a very hard pill to swallow. I'm no tough guy. Hell now I'm the old guy once again teaching the young kids and my youth has long passed. My point here is, you have to be well rounded this day and age. No longer can you rely on things like kicks only. You never really could when it comes right down to it. Boxing will always have its place but must be fortified with other skills. Had those fellas been able to use those legs that night it very well could have ended differently. Just thought I'd share an old dudes hayday story.

This is an interesting take for sure. I think one definitely has to consider what youre sayin based off the recent big time fights in boxing, but when I think about what would happen between a boxing champion and someone who has legitimately never stepped into any type of martial arts gym before, the inexperienced person would without a doubt get smoked badly. That being considered, I think the best way to decide the legitimacy of a sport is to base it off what factors make up the sport, how long all these factors take to learn, and how far do they separate you from the competition when you learn them. Taking BJJ and boxing for example, it might take someone 5-10 years to be able to compete with the highest BJJ competition, but it might take that same person 1-5 years to be able to compete with the highest level boxers. So it might not be that boxing is not a legitimate sport but rather people can close the skill gap faster than previously thought because boxing is limited in how many factors are present with a ruleset only allowing the use of your hands. Perhaps athleticism can take over more at the highest levels because it takes less time to get to that level for athletes trying to get there. But boxing is still definitely effective and shouldnt be taken as joke. Its probably the most focused skill set of any martial art but because of that its skillset can learned quicker than the rest.

I agree, but people need to stop acting like this is a new or surprising development. Boxing as a monetized sport basically just started as bums being paid to knock eachother out as violently and cheaply as possibly.
Boxing didn't start as some kind of admirable, proud institution and get corrupted, it was just people giving eachother brain damage for money. The fact that it's now much more efficiently monetized is not a bug, it's a feature. The fact that boxers can probably make more money by not fighting the toughest fights is probably more common now, but it's not entirely new.
The classic era everyone looks back on had its own share of similar problems. Things might seem especially bad now, but there's not really any reason why boxing shouldn't be this way. The fact that fighters can make more of the money in the sport or they can take longer breaks from fights is inarguably a good development for their health.
If you care about boxing as a sport, you're kind of shit out of luck, because that's not what it primarily is. It's entertainment.

Tyson Fury is the first person to say yes to a competition with Francis, where you can only stop him punching you by either punching him back, cuddling him or running away.

Connor did NOT "beat up" Mayweather. What Francis accomplished trumps what Connor did because EVERYONE knew that Floyd allowed Connor to come to him before he decided to put him out. Connor put up a good show and did a good job, but he didn't come off as a threat to Floyd in that fight. Francis on the other hand looked like a dangerous boxer that could become champion. Now ask yourself would Lebron James beat this person in a basketball game? Basketball is an actual sport, so Lebron James would beat this person who never played and it wouldn't matter how much drive, determination, heart etc they had. Lebron James would utterly dominate them and the score would be 100-0.

@@jty9631 yeah I get it. The alternative is that Francis isn’t just a good athlete. He’s a naturally gifted fighter. Perhaps Fury is that good but Francis is highly gifted. Also, he’s not say an Olympic sprinter or shot putter with no experience, he’s a world class champion combat athlete. The alternative is this: being a mixed martial artist requires much more of an understanding of body mechanics overall than boxing. It probably also requires more sophisticated thinking since there are so many more possible alternatives to attack and be attacked that one must be aware of. Imagine a guitarist who has trained to play like a virtuoso. He’s learned many scales on the neck and many more techniques than someone who has just, for example, learned to play blues. Now put him on stage playing a blues song next to a guy who just plays the blues. He’s confined now by the genre of music, but because he has soooo much more overall skill under his belt, he can still blow a great blues guitarist of stage with his performance. Something like that. It would be unfair to say “well blues is just fake guitar playing, because the other guy doesn’t usually play blues and he kicked his ass!”
No. The other guy is just so technically proficient at the whole guitar neck, he can sit in and play with anyone in that genre or any genre and make them look bad. Saying blues is fake takes so much more away from that player.

I agree with what you're saying about the level of athletes in combat sports. Yeah there are some very talented people in the sport, but they generally don't approach the level of freak you see in football or basketball. My theory on it all is a hybrid of what you're proposing and the general consensus. Boxing like MMA is legitimate, HOWEVER because the big money is perceived to be in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, the odds of getting the same level of athlete in those sports is lower. Hence, there will occasionally be a guy like Francis who finds his way into combat sports who is able to really capitalize on his athleticism. I've stated for years that if LeBron had chosen MMA or Boxing as a kid, he would likely be an undefeated superstar HW champ. Same goes for any number of guys from big league sports. Doesn't mean the sport is necessarily illegitimate, just that you don't have the same talent pool, though in the case of boxing the problem is compounded by widespread corruption.

I am studying boxing again at 55 and use it in MT fights often to win and I even used it on the street a month ago with a drunk guy mouthing off and one cross and that was all over. I have a blue belt in bjj and have used it twice to shut down fights, but stayed on my feet and got tired of studying every possible sleeve grip by the Gracies after four years. Boxing is brutal and works well.

  • @jlongobardy1612

Sonnen, somehow, watched a 40-year-old Mayweather who hadn't fought in 2 years and who came into the fight admitting to half-assing his preparation, who absorbed a grand total of 3 clean punches over the course of the fight, and who won the match via stoppage, and concluded that the other guy, the one who landed but 3 punches before himself getting stopped, beat Mayweather up.
Thus, his (Sonnen's) judgement is now officially suspect. *You have to understand how it breaks my heart to say that.*

Francis is a freak of nature and basically a unicorn in combat sports. I recall someone by the name of Brock Lesnar coming into the UFC and gaining the heavyweight title with only WWE experience, so it works probably in any sports, not just boxing. The difference is MMA is an art, and boxing is a "science". MMA is chess, and boxing is checkers.
To be beat by a child prodigy in chess is understandable because it's much more of a complex game. But to be beat by a child prodigy in CHECKERS is so much more embarrassing because the rules and possible outcomes are so much easier to see. It's like letting your kids beat you at tik tac toe. 😂😂😂

I have an old book on my shelf by Curtis Cokes, "The Complete Book of Boxing". On page 21 he seems to resonate with your main point - athleticism can be a crucial factor - when he says, "Natural athletic ability is paramount to becoming a great boxer. ANYONE WHO IS A GOOD ATHLETE CAN BE TAUGHT TO BOX".
