After 6 months of shooting with the Ricoh GrIII I share my thoughts on the camera and talk about the good and the bad. This video is not intended to be a review but rather just my thoughts based on my experiences with it. Long story short, the Ricoh GRIII is one of the best cameras for Street photography.

Regarding the ring that comes of easily: there is a very small crosshead screw on it, close to the "GR". If you have a very small screwdriver then you can tighten it.
P0p0
The rattling is the sensor (its stabilized so it moves)
What I thought so too
💯
That noise is the ibis. Killer camera, awesome lens
It is yea
Exactly.
Yeah, this guy stays clueless about things. No matter how many years go by and him “shooting”. The idea that they should change the lens of a GR to anything but a 28mm too lol 😂 he needs to read up on some history of cameras and what Daidō did and why the 28mm was so key for this and the GR.
@@JoseArmenteros man, he is new to the photography. He will learn eventually
@@JoseArmenteros this didn't age well.
No mention of the dust issue? I think the most wanted feature for the next iteration is the weather sealing. That's why I won't buy this, it seems a very recurrent issue, I think worth mentioning.
For such an expensive camera and the poor customer service from reports all over, it makes the GRiii such a risky investment. Until they can make it weather sealed, I'd rather pick up a Fuji XF10 or one of those shitty rugged compact cameras. I could throw away 3-5 compact cameras for the price of 1 GR.
The GR3 is a killer camera. Its my second body for events. But its my go to camera also on the go. Just with friends of family to enjoy the shooting. The Ibis is good. Its so compact and feels and looks nice. Especially with a grip. I carry a power bank.you charge it over lunch. Good to go. I do miss an evf tho. But thats just what the camera is.
My ring never comes off and I take it everywhere.
Past video: “Why I don’t buy new cameras”
This video: “What I’d like to see in a Gr4”
9:30 that's clearly the ibis lol
As many already have pointed out, the rattling is the Shake Reduction system which means that the sensor is a bit loose until the IBIS magnets start working. Surprised that you didn't google this before you actually created a video. Doesn't help you trying to be reputable source of info. Also, mentioning Sean Tucker in the same sentence as Alex Webb? Sheeesh.
The IBIS dude. It’s a small camera so there’s no frame to buffer the sound of the sensor bouncing around... I’m not sure I’d do that on purpose 🤔
My favorite customization (if you are using manual mode): designating the Fn button to "Onu Push AE in M Mode". Helps me immensely when taking one-handed or candid shots.
It’s hyped to be a STREET camera.
So, since its not cheap, why no weather sealing?
It’s actually a larger capacity battery than the GRii. The III is just more power hungry.
9:30 this sound is ibis...
if only this camera has a built in flash. I would've upgraded from gr2
I was stoked getting one but now I feel it's just meh. Build quality is not great (for a 1k camera), focusing is hit or miss.... Wish I would have kept my NIkon Coolpix A
The GR3 is simply amazing. It's lens and the color it makes is simply out of this world.
I'm astounded how such a small camera can do this.
I'd prefer if the lens didn't extend. Fuji have done it with their XF10 so I'm sure Ricoh could too. Makes the camera much more discreet when shooting and would prevent the dust sucking inside issue. Would also like to see weather-sealing and the flash returned. Batteries last 1 hour only? Really? Even the Ricoh branded one? That's poor. Not sure about this 3rd version but my Ricoh GR V1 didn't have a strap hole on both sides so couldn't hang it round my neck. Would like to see that. Otherwise amazing camera.
The battery life is the one thing I dont like, The rattle on the camera is the suspended sensor since it has IBIS.
but batterys are cheap and really small so easy to carry arround (U can youse any DB-110 Sized Battery)
I don't own one of these but I was wishing of getting one. For $1k I'm surprised that it has so many... I don't know if this is the right word, but flaws. Especially, the rattling sound.
I don't know, I am very disappointed of some these street shooters! Really, you don't know that was the ibis?
I just love my GRIII only thing is that it's not waterproof otherwise it's just PERFECT 👌
Totally agree about the exposure compensation button being removed! I use it all the time to fine tune my exposure and is some convenient on the GRii. That is the one thing holding me back from moving up from my GRii.
great video but would be so much better without the background music which ...i hate haha...good work other than that!
If you update the software, you can also shoot touching the screen, not only focus.
This is also one of the things that reduces battery life.
The rattle is the IBIS
2 vids?
Damn 2 videos tday!!?
My boi killing it 🔥
I lost so many of those damn front rings. Never thought to put a hair tie!
@@MPD90 purely aesthetic
@@MPD90 I don’t think it’s the best camera for that. You can set it up and put it on a timer. But this is more of a street camera
The rattle is due to the IBIS. It's normal.
What's with the hat and the raincoat? Your indoors.
The way people use the word ‘review’ today is not correct - giving specs and whatnot is not a review, but an overview. Offering a personal opinion on experience is a review, which is exactly what this video is. I don’t think that’s a bad thing either 🙂
I've just gone out shooting my GRiii for the first time today, it'll take some getting used to because it's very different from what I normally shoot but I'm excited for the challenge, the lens is gorgeous!
Highlight weighted metering is a feature I would very much like! I've been thinking about getting a Ricoh or Fujifilm, so far I think the XT-4 is winning that conversation. Thanks for your thoughts about the GRIII mate, very helpful video!
I heard Ricoh fixed the ring issue- mine has been rock solid.
Thorough appraisal. Do you know any place in the SF Bay Area where I could hold one prior to deciding to purchase? I have called everywhere. Thx.
Ibis dude. 🙄
What Camera are you using to make this Video? Are you using any color correction lenses? Thanks
Brah would you recommend picking one up now? Any word on when the GR IV will come out?
It’s coming out a week next Thursday, so if you buy one now you’ll get a good 9 days out of it.

You look alot like Tupac
i just bought her and you are from san francisco i also this machine is better than iphone 12?
Love the cam. My main complaint is the display. Not having an EVF makes it necessary to have a screen that is bright enough to compose, even in bright daylight. Not possible with the GR III. Even at the highest setting.
Too much drama
I really want this but being 900 bucks before taxes AND the shaking IBIS that I don't even want
I'm looking at the GR2 for a little u der 700
Have you considered the Fujifilm XF10? I know a lot of people rag on it, but I have no idea why. I have one and it's excellent. It is very similar to the GR line of cameras, but much cheaper.
If you don't use accessories, can you leave that little ring thing at home?
Worse battery life than the GRII........Could it be the IBIS?
1) trash battery life
2) wonky rear wheel dial pad 😤
Aside from that, it’s made me a better photographer.
When I bought my GR3 the first thing I did was super glue that lens ring on since I have no intention of ever buying any of the accessories.
If it cracks it may be difficult to remove the ring. Apparently there's a small screw to tighten it up.
I think the rattling is the floating IBIS sensor.
I couldn't agree more. I've been shooting the GR III for a good year now. I've really grown to love the camera. It's great for shooting in cities. The small unimpressive camera doesn't attract too much attention. Nobody minds when you're shooting with it. Love the results I've gotten. If you're interested, check out the video 1 YEAR 1 CAMERA 1 LENS on my channel.
Double upload!!! Thanks man lol
Love my GRIII but the battery sucks ;-)
Without the IBIS the battery life would be better and there would be no rattling noise coming from the camera.
Good thing you can turn the IBIS off
My #1 on my wishlist is: tilt the screen, so I can hold the camera at belly/chest height and still see the screen looking down at it. It would make the camera larger though.
Not necessarily. Look at the Fuji X100V. Barely any increase in size compared to the X100F. Flippy screens would be bigger, but tilt screens can be designed to be almost invisible.
Are you a photographer for a living?
Too bad i blew 1100 on a dumb x100f .
How did you get your peak design anchor through the bottom anchor point on the GR3? I could barely get it through the top!
Teeth Floss - wrap it around the anchor cord a few times, then string the floss through and pull it through
It's the ibis that makes the noise. Been thinking of getting the gr ii .
There is a tiny screw for you to tighten the front ring.
There's one thing I never truly catched about this camera and for that reason I never bought it. I'm nowhere near someone you can call a street photographer, you can say I'm the most casual user you can possibly imagine, I'm really thrilled by the amazing IQ and small size, but is it good for my use or will I find myself stuck with a fixed lens I can't fully enjoy? Is it versatile enough for a casual user?
I have a GR Digital the 1st gen and I basically take anywhere, so it definitely works
28mm equivalent is a very versatile lens. Fun fact, almost all (I would dare to say every single) smartphones use a 28mm lens (+/-2mm) as the main camera. If you can use a smartphone, you can use a Ricoh.
great review
the shake sound is the IBIS
I want to know how to shoot portraits with gr iii😂
Thanks for another great vid. At around 5:12, you refer to a couple modern photographers' look as "the slide film look." I'd love for you to elaborate on this a little bit - I've been wondering how to properly describe that look (and how to recreate it with film!) I had guessed maybe it was from a lot of pushing perhaps?
For street, I think of high contrast lighting, and bold punchy colors with slide film... Check photographers Constatine Manos (his color work) and Jay Maisel. Oh and Pete Turner.
@@joeschlicht Thanks! Always good to have more inspirations and I'll check these folks out.
But my question was more a) whether there is a more commonly accepted name for this look than "the slide film look", and b) how exactly one achieves it with film (other than, I guess, by using slide film)?
@@bchoward0000 Ah, my apologies... I always refer to it as the slide film look as well, and it's really only achieved with slide film...less DR, deep black shadows, high contrast, and punchy colors. I'm not sure color negative film can give you that look. With digital, the closest I have come is with the incredible Sigma DP2 Merrill with the Foveon 3 color sensor.
WE love a good comparison vid.
What about the no flash in the camera for creative shots?
What about it?
First
I miss the flash!
First
Just picked up the Ricoh GR (for a crazy good price), to use mostly as a light meter, since none of my film cameras have built in meters. Really enjoy shooting around with it, though I'm not used to lacking a viewfinder and physical controls for exposure settings (coming from Fujifilm & film cameras). Still, the image quality of a camera this tiny is pretty insane. Very impressed.
Used the GRIII for 3weeks.
The relatively high price is the GRIII’s No1 enemy that makes its flaws inexcusable. Its not a cheap pocket camera in many countries.
Its high price is cleverly achieved by it being overly-hyped up by Western media as a “street camera” and given a self-created cult following. Classic American marketing.
If it was a REAL street photography camera, it surely would have these mandatory things on such a “street camera”:
1. Big and bright EVF with excellent focus peaking. But as usual, most mftrs are clever in not giving such competently useful EVFs unless you buy the higher-priced models. Ricoh is bullshitting you here. Where’s the EVF?
2. Fast and accurate manual focusing. How is this possible when the LCD screen is almost blanked out by bright outdoor lighting? Back to square 1….same issue as your smartphones.
3. Zone focusing scale.
Do you see one?
4. Ruggedly built.
While its price is rugged, with a magnesium body, its dial feels flimsy while that silly ring around the lens (which always comes loose) make the product look like a cheap product.
In reality, the majority of GRIII photos that you have seen, can easily be replicated with any flagship smartphones with simple editing, (which I have been doing since iPhone 4 until now. And I also use an XT2 with Voight 40mm 1.2).
Its certainly fun and exciting to participate in such a cult following thats created and “excited-tized” by American social media if you can just close your eye and buy one GRIII, while having loads of other cameras.
But if you have to ponder, analyse and rethink many times before deciding, then pls look at my comments above and re-think.
Do you need to spend so much on a hyped-up product while your own smartphone (if cleverly exploited) can give similar results? And dont forget…your smartphone can be used in the rain😂😂😂…Do you dare to use the GR3 in the rain when merely DUST ingress into sensor is already an issue for many users?
The more you analyse without emotions and biasness, the more you’ll see that the GRIII is a highly “exciting-fied” piece of cheap stuff for amateurs wanting to appear hip and professional.
No thanks.
At the moment, I’ll stick to my XT2 + Voight, while continuing to use my iP12ProMax for all casual shooting.
No smartphone compares to the GR for image quality or ergonomics.
Way better off with my xe3&18mm f2 combo
@Münze the grip, way you feel in the hand, the evf, option of using many lenses, larger lcd screen, faster af etc....
@Münze if you dont need any of that features gr3 is way to go..specially being a pocketable cam is its biggest advantage..
Doesn’t shoot well in Low light.
true but better than my Olympus OM-D EM 1

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!! So I have experience with ISO on a DSLR, but I’m new to film. I am confused whether the speed of the film is a set ISO. Meaning that even if I change the ASA on my film camera, it won’t have any effect on exposure.
I’d appreciate any insight!
The ISO you set on your film camera only matters if you use a camera with a built-in meter.
@@justinkingery2489 oh ok that makes sense, thanks for helping me out!
