Resident Evil is my favorite video game franchise of all time and I want to talk about it. Every single game. Next is a strange one that was released for an outdated system by the time of its release. It's Resident Evil Gaiden for the Game Boy Color. This is Part 7 of my Resident Evil retrospective. Check out parts 1-6 first in the playlist:
• Resident Evil Retrospe...
crazy how this game introduced loot drops to the series
Also the combat is kinda like the DS port in 2006. Use the touch screen in a first person mode to slash zombies for potential health drops. I forget if ammo was also a drop. I still have to continue my knife only run in that mode I think I needed to figure out where the other disc was to open up the lab. Did a directors cut knife only run last year and it was lots of fun. Challenging but fun with the proto crimson heads.
when I asked if you'd do outbreak and you said "I'm doing all of them"
MY MANS DELIVERS
only real sandwiches remember this one
hahaha
Not gonna lie! That intro tune is kind of a banger! It really sets the tone and feel of a RE game 😎🤙
😳 Wait, if *Gaiden* means *side story* , then it follows that *Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, 3* are side stories of Ryu Hayabusa.
And *Dead Or Alive* series are his main games. 😮
So, Ryu's main focus is fighting tournaments, and he saves the world as a side hustle. 😅
No way this is where Undertale got its combat from lmao
Obligatory "So this is where Undertale got its combat mechanics from" comment
The GBC port of RE was cancelled due to Capcom not being satisfied with the product. Not due to programming issues.
0:19 “a very dimly lit screen”
Yeah, so much so you might even say it’s not lit at all 😂
This game was unironically my first introduction into the Resident Evil series. I remember back then when Gamestop was known as Babbage, my dad got me this game "he isn't a gaming person by any means tho" as a gift and i was confused as to what it was since i never heard of Resident Evil at that time.
The gameplay was ok for a Gameboy game, yet i managed to beat it only once completely blind and with my somewhat knowledge of English language then. The music while repetitive it was something i guess but had some fun out of it by the end of it, nowadays this game "which sadly i don't own anymore" is a very rare Gameboy game to find in perfect condition with box and everything but it can value some decent money if you have it with everything.
In the future can you make a video about the resident evil games in mobile phones like the confidential report 1 to 4 or resident evil degeneration for iphone ?
Re: the combat - the slidy bar is fairly similar to Undertale (though I think the "hit" zone is constant), but not sure about the top-down aiming->combat scene + steady approach element.
Agent 0047 you're gonna have loading up some code Veronica X my main resident evil experience
Capcom needs to release this onto the switch.
New Paraspective!? ANNND I'M JUST GETTING READY FOR LUNCH AT WORK!? SCOOOORRRRRRREEE!!!!
Perfect Dark for GBC
Has too much force stealth early game.
And yet, it is better than Perfect Dark Zero. Likely the upcoming reboot too.
I didn't even know this game existed
I loved the opening song for the intro of the game
But I can see how it coukd get annoying on repeat and it dosnt suit the exploratiin aspect of the game
ngl battle theme got me wanting to bus it down with the zombies rather than shoot them
I've wanted to buy this for a while but it's just for crazy expensive now' I remember back in 2017/2018 the last 18 months of picking up the, back then, pricier gen5 and 6 games like GC I was picking up I could've bought this cart for I think 50$
Poor Barry, he's one of my favorite RE characters besides Hunk and he gets wasted on spin off games.
I've never owned or played RE Gaiden, probably never will due to the crazy prices of many retro games now. Apparently, the GBC port of Alone In The Dark The New Nightmare did a better job making a Game Boy Demake of the console versions.
Shame we didn't get that GBC port of RE1 and Dino Crisis.
I really enjoyed this game as a teenager (32 now). I was obsessed with RE and ordered a copy on eBay and played through it on my GBA SP.
I completely agree with you about the degradation of the “spooky” atmosphere due to the “chippy” music. Distant moans from dark hallways and sparse atmospheric music would have drastically improved the experience.
The “battle theme” gets simply atrocious after like 3 minutes.
With respect to the shooting mechanics, I didn’t mind them, as it seemed like a suitable analog for trying to train pistol sights on a moving target - considering the hardware this game was built for.
I can’t imagine they couldn’t have devised a way to have a wobbling crosshair that you have to train over attackers’ heads when you shift to the first-person persepctive and time shots that way. It probably would have been way better received.
Such wasted potential, I think the game would've done better by being improved with the GBA graphic and higher capacity. Overall I like the concept of the ship and I was a huge fan of us getting Barry and Leon again on this adventure but it's clear whomever wrote this game didn't even know what to do with it because why is Leon still wearing the RPD uniform?
The combat mechanic wasn't too annoying for me, what I'd say actually got to me on my run with this game was how certain items and ammo will only appear after certain points in the story which is super lame leading to you having to go back to areas you know for sure no longer contain key items or any use so you can get some of the better ammo or extra plants if you are running low.
In general, I'd be ok with the game one day getting a remake or something but I doubt it will ever happen since it's very clearly been removed from canon. If anything at least it serves as another footnote on the story of this franchise.
Kinda the combat is like the DS port of teh OG RE I played a used copy for like 15 or 20 CAD in 2006.
Looks like the later Revelations game recycled ideas from this, like the girl Lucia orphan with weird abilities that end up living with Barry, sounds like Natalia from Revelations 2, and the surprise switch of characters at the end,
And the ship setting like Revelations 1
I love Barry
I kinda only knew about the cancelled GBC game at the time. That screenshot of the hallway with the chandeler and the save room. That kinda blew my mind back in 1999. I was like wooh Capcom is going for it. I shoudl try out that alone in the dark game on the switch.
Honestly I wish more franchises had dipped their two into handheld games. It’s probably just because I’m a sucker for the pixelated art styles due to nostalgia.
I remember buying this resident evil on gbc at wallmart when it was new i beat it lots of times as a 12 year old kid and enjoyed it and then i got RE1 on game cube 😊
This should be re imagined as RE: The RPG lo. Like Doom 1 and 2 RPG
I wonder if this is where Undertale's combat comes from.
Bad music in intro.
Like feom c64
Leon needs some chapstick, if you kno you kno.
Thank you for covering this game. I never really understood why Capcom didn't choose to just make this into a 2d action platformer with limited ammo but given the development history it makes perfect sense
First View
I had never heard of this game before but this looks really interesting. Barry is such an underutilized RE character and it's great to see him in a starring role for once. I don't know what prompted him to dye his hair and beard red but he's rocking it. I was intrigued at how they would tackle the gameplay and honestly, I was impressed by how they managed to work within the GBC's limitations. It looks like a fun little romp, I definitely want to try it out sometime. Also, the info booklet summary on Leon is kinda funny because it's describing RE4 Leon, not RE2 Leon. Even a few years out they knew the direction his character was going to grow into.
As always thank you. I played like 2 re games and never had knowledge about all the other ones.
Thanks to you this changes now.
I love it
Love this game.
This was an excellent way to spend my lunch break! Thanks man! 😎🤙
That intro is so good! Let's not pretend they didn't nailed it
