I appreciated Winston's response to the question 'what would you say to fans that question your change in sound?'
"We have a bunch of records that you apparently like; Thats really really great, those records aren't going anywhere, we're just making some other ones as well."
Fucking well put there, budd \m/

they can still play music and have fun,but here we are talking about a record, not just "having fun". I don't hate them for this change, it's just that from one of my favourite bands, they will get in the crowd of the ok-ish and generic bands. I'm dissapointed

They nailed it here. Their old records are still there, want their old sound? Go listen to them. The best bands change over the years, if you can't handle an artist you love doing something new then you're as boring as the artist that holds the same note for a 20 year career. Fuck up cants.

i have 0% negativity on changing sound, but they sound very cheesy and it's shit no offence, dude! even Nickelback sounds heavier unique and better than this, they changed and they sound shit.., atleast if they sounded nice

Well heres my opinion on their new sound:
To me this proves that they are true musicians, being creative and making music that they stand 100% behind. As Ben mentioned, metalcore is a really uncreative style musically and if they wanted they could write songs by just hitting the bottom string if the guitar....but they dont. If they put out music like that, thats when they will actually sound like all the other bands.

    • @lostinoc3528
      @lostinoc3528 6 років тому +8

sounding generic isn't being creative. the only thing they stand behind 100% is money. metalcore can be very creative, beats nickleback everyday of the week.

    • @serenehamze3798
      @serenehamze3798 6 років тому +3

I totally agree, I like the fact that they are so excited about trying new things with their music. Metalcore can absolutely NOT be creative. If i played 10 random bands from that scene I would probably think that they are all the same band. People always assume that when an artist or a band start to experiment with their sound that their after money, but don't people hear that making money in the music industry is very hard these days with streaming. Honestly, get your head out of your fucking ass.

Messugah is writing songs by hitting one string. Actually much of the prog/djent scene writes like that nowadays, you mean to tell me that the whole scene is unoriginal?
Atlas was original AF, and they actually experimented with their sound by adding high pitched backing vocals and violins etc. That's how you grow as a musician, by making your music more complicated, not more mainstream/likeable to those who wouldn't listen to you otherwise.

It's not about changing or evolving that fans are complaining about. It's about the direction. Changing your sound to dad metal with the same bottom feeder style breakdown in every song is not an Evolution IMO.
I know it's their choice and they're free to do whatever they want, I just try to phrase why so many fans are upset. And it's not haters, it's genuine old PWD fans that feel betrayed in some way.
I am sure fans wouldn't be upset if they had changed in any other style like Hardcore or Death Metal or even Melodic Deathmetal f.e. It just confuses me why a band that was the pinnacle of actually interesting and complex Metalcore would change to such a boring sound. Of course this is subjective but I think that's how most fans think.
And anyone saying that we just want them to copy Horizons is wrong, you can change without making a 180. Look at TAIM f.e. they evolved their Style from Deathcore to Deathmetal yet no one is complaining because it fits.
On the other hand I believe the band that they love their new sound and don't just want to sell out; they seem like genuine guys and they should continue to do what they want. Still don't get how someone who wrote "Feed them to the pigs" or "breaking point" can enjoy the sound of "prey".
I wish they would've continued the sound from Atlas, that was a nice change, they had some Killer blast beats in "Snake Oil and Holy Water" for example and a dark vibe that I really enjoyed.
Complex topic.. I will listen to Reverence but kinda makes me sad to see the Band you loved so much change to a sound that you absolutely don't like ;(

2:43 it's not people from the internet but your fans, that keep loving your music over the years. You have been one of the best Metalcore Band on this planet with amazing Surfer/Globetrotter Theme, but now it's just a regular heavy music that sounds good while playing it live. Your previous songs till and including Atlas were technically so complex, even live you we're not able to play it without errors; IRE and the new songs from reverance are just hooks that are boring. If you think that making another Metalcore Release isn't that hard, then just go for it! You've gained millions of fans because of your UNIQUE Metalcore style. Give us another album like Horizons/Deep blue etc.! I really hope, that someday you will change your minds. :) See you pwd

I understand their change in direction over the years and them wanting to branch out into new and different styles they've maybe not experienced before but of course it is disappointing for us, old fans. They need to do this in order to stay "relevant" though, sadly.
They're completely correct when they say they can't be the same over and over, it would be boring for the band and old/new fans.
I may not be the biggest fan of what's been released so far but I'm still supporting them regardless. Not going to bash on the band for their decision, I will still enjoy their stuff just perhaps not as much as previous albums.
Parkway Drive will remain my favourite band always.

It's easy to label everyone who doesn't like what you're doing 'an internet hater', and while there will always be people like that, from what I've seen, a vast majority of people complaining are actual fans who are also trying to provide criticism as well.
We've been to your shows, bought your merch, repped your records throughout the streets in their cars, spent hours upon hours non stop listening to stuff you created because it was tight as fuck. It was fresh, original, heavy, had a signature sound unique to you guys. For this, many considered you kings of the game. And now you produce this bland mix of basic rock and call everything but that 'generic' ?
You wouldn't be where you are without your fans, and to dismiss them so nonchalantly with that "don't give a fuck" attitude is something I thought PWD was way above. That's probably the worst part. Look at Ben's comment on Vice Grip. This is where it all started with the direction change, and they had mixed reactions, however, once they played it live and it seemed good, now it's cool to just make an album full of Vice Grips cuz hey, it worked that one time?
I'll take a shot in the dark and say people were willing to let stuff on IRE slide because they weren't 100% sure if you'd be going further with this direction, and there weren't many songs like that on IRE in the first place, but now that it's becoming more apparent that this is it, obviously there's going to be backlash. "Into The Dark" was, for me, a perfect example of how you could evolve your style but still keep the core that brought you so far, I sincerely hope I bite my tongue and Reverence turns out enjoyable, and Wishing Wells was a good sign.
If you want to do whatever you want to, then so be it, but don't pretend like the diehard fans you guys have a lot of, are just ghosts on the internet.

  • @TruueMetal
    @TruueMetal 6 років тому +10

Kinda contradictory aren't you? You claim that your old stuff has become stagnant and 100s of other bands have copied your old style. So you choose to write music of a style that is even more popular and generic? You guys now sound more bland, simplistic and boring than ever before. You were once the king's of a genre, now you've just become lost in a huge pool of common Alternate Metal/ Dad rock bands. Just stick to what you were good at man.

I like to think of it as this: Metallica changed their sound from album to album, drastically. They reach new audiences every time. Everyone Ive heard from about the band prefers a different album. They are trying new things, making music because they love making music, and if you like it too then yay, all the better.

I always thinks its strange when bands say "we wrote what we wanted to write, and DGAF what people think". Cool cool cool, so will you GAF if everyone stopped buying your records and going to gigs, because your 'fans' dont like it? The same fans who spent money on going to gigs/merch/albums etc? The same fans who funded your overseas trips/houses/income?
hey, its a business man. Make less popular songs for your 'customers/fans", make less money. But dont give fans attitude like "we dont give a F#ck if you dont like it"

That's the distinction between a fan and angry retards on the internet putting themselves on a pedestal talking as if their opinion is somehow more important.

They're never going to stop having fans haha if they lose old fans they'll just gain new fans that like the direction they're going towards more then metalcore. Just because you're an older fan doesn't mean their going to listen to what you want. The fact that they're wrighting what they want to write makes them musicians because if they kept making the same album over and over they'd only be doing it because it's comforatble and they know it would sell. Taking risks and experimenting is what makes music interesting, Personally I'm not going to judge the album by the singles i'm going to wait till it comes out and see if there are songs I can enjoy. So far I loved Wishing Wells and Prey was interesting but I just couldn't get into the void, but that doesn't mean i think they should just write more songs like Wishing Wells because I feel like that would be boring to an extent.

Fans in air quotes because as I said, most reasonable fans when a new record is dropped will simply not engage with the record if they don't like it, rather than sperg out on the internet claiming "Parkway is dead!!" because they chose to experiment with something different this time. It's fine to have an opinion, but there is no collective agreement among "fans" on whether or not a new album is bad or good, and I think Winston made a good point in this vid where he said something along the lines of "If a million people listen to a song there is no way to know what each individual person thinks"
So yeah, as you said, talk with your money if you dislike it. If the collective agreement among parkway fans truly is "Reverence is shit" then the sales and engagement with the record should speak for itself.

    "Than giving a compliment."
Alright Parkway, got me there. Though it's different, this is initial bullshit whiney reactions. Change inspires a reaction, and typically it's negative. I was nervous about Ire at first, and once I heard the whole bitch, I was genuinely excited. I know from an interview before Ire, you guys talked about the challenge of writing something slower and that interview got me more into Ire.
I hope to see another interview after Reverence so I can understand the album more so. I'm not excited yet, skeptical due to the mad change, but I am looking forward to it.
I'll see you guys the day after the album. Hope the new live performances were just as wild as Ire was. It's been some fun years Parkway.
Also, cumbuckets, THEY STILL PLAY THE OLD SHIT AND TYPICALLY BRING BACK OLDIES WHEN IT'S BEEN AWHILE. Let this album hype die down and you'll hear more of every other album.
Don't like it enough, move on.

Tell me that there will be at least one heavy ass track that's not Wishing Wells. Also, I love IRE, but I'm not overly fond of the spoken word vocals. That's my only criticism, I actually enjoy all 3 songs that have been released.

It's funny how they talk about not wanting to sound generic, but this change in sound is the most generic, bland and uninspired they've ever sounded. I'm not against bands changing their sound or experimenting, I encourage it, But this is a downgrade.

I'd really like to know how you'd consider this generic. Name another band that sounds similar to this.
I'd say you can call their music more simplistic, but generic? I don't think that's accurate.

The fact that they defend it so hard on exaclty the points that they get critisism on and turn that around 180 degrees seems to me they're just trying to talk them out of the shit they get wich in my opinion they kinda deserve especially after prey. Of course you can evolve your music but going from an unique sound to something that people can sing along at a festival wich the most generic sound ever makes me hella disapointed in this band, i use to love pwd but this interview just sounds kinda ignorant. I'm sure as hell disapointed will skip their live show because of the new sound but I hope they get back on the right track and ditch that generic shit called 'prey'

You're damned if you evolve, and damned if you don't. They can't keep doing the same sound for their whole careers. Just for an example, Fear Factory. Started out as a fairly generic Death Metal band evolved into something unique. Same with Gojira.

I find it hilarious when people say stuff like new parkway drive and when metalcore bands change their sound in a somewhat similar way and they say it sounds generic like they didnt listen to a ton of metalcore that all sounds the same. Im guilty of listening to a lot of metal that is that way but I know it and admit it. People need to listen to new genres of songs openly otherwise they will never get into it. I wasnt into new of mice and men but now i am

What a joke! This interview is kinda "kick in the ass" for all those supporters in early days. I'm admitting: I'm not a fan since these times, but i can understand why these people are hoping for just one single song that reminds on the old times. The explanation to the question why they're changing their sound is like: "We give a shit on you".
Why they're not recording just one or two of these songs so everyone are satisied. All the discussions could have been prevented! I hope so for Reverence
I hate bands who are guided by the the greed for money and more fame like Linkin Park, Bullet For My Valentine or Bring me the Horizon. Bands like August Burns Red and Heaven Shall Burn always stand to their fans who made them great as they were just little lights in the metal sector.

Are they willfully deluded about how many people just aren’t digging their new sound? People are afraid of change, sure, but do you think all these people would complain if the change was bad? Obv not.

I strongly believe you don't have to go stadium rock in order to change your sound. Look at Gojira, While She sleeps, Bleed from Within... they are evolving, adding new elements without forgetting what they were. I love PWD, I have merch, I went to concerts... yet I was highly disappointed with IRE and with these singles so far. I am sorry but I might step out.

"its the internet"..yea thats easy to say, but behind most of them "hate" accounts are real fans who are just very disappointed in the new soft and slow direction pwd is going. i love old parkway, but the new stuff feels like they became a different band, which i don't like. Mostly because the songs feel so bland with uninspired guitar work and basic drums :/

I don't know... this whole thing just sounds like some apology to me... they say they are confident about their new direction, but they don't talk and act like they are. They just repeat that mantra of "It's so rewarding that we write what we want now", but it sounds like they are just trying to convince themselves by saying that over and over. I guess they don't really know what it is that they want to write. I think they are pretty confused, and very lost. Just the way they look around when they are listening to eachother talk, like a couple going through a breakup... this band is having an identity crisis. And they definitely don't look happy, especially Jeff... :/
