How To Adjust The Valve Lash On A Honda TRX250EX

  • I adjusted my valve lash on my TRX250EX. It was beginning to make a noticeable “ticking” noise when I would first crank up the quad so I adjusted the valve lash and it runs like normal again. I will say some of you that look up this video will have noticed that some TRX250’s tend to tick harder than others. That is completely normal and it’s just something with these motors.

    . Question 2011 Honda Recon. Replaced top end, values and springs and oil seals. When you start it it runs wide open like you have the throttle wide open and this is from the first start after the top end and valve replacement. I thought it was the new carb I put on it so I put the old carb back on and same problem, Have not done the valve adjustment yet. Will that cause this?

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  3 місяці тому

      It's hard to say without looking at it, but sometimes that happens when your throttle cable is too tightly adjusted. Other than that, its hard to tell if you've replaced the carb.

      @@bossadamsgarage @bossadamsgarage thanks for responding. I am an idiot. I put the pin and its housing (don't know what you call it, it's connected to the throttle) down in the carb 180 degrees backwards. The reason I did all this work is because when it gets hot white smoke rolls up from that adaptor between the carb and the cylinder. After all this it still rolls white smoke up after it gets hot. I just went ahead and ordered a OEM carb. The one I put in it was a cheap one off Amazon but both the old carb and new carb was doing the same thing. The adaptor gets so hot you can;t touch it. Oil has been changed. Any ideas? Will a oil cooler cause this?

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  3 місяці тому

      Sounds like you're buring oil. I got a video on the channel where I had to redo the top end of the quad because of the same issue. The carb wouldn't cause white smoke. The make a lot of top end rebuild kits for these quads and its a fairly simple straight forward process if you wnated to do it yourself.

    I have the same TRX250. Why did you not take the valve cover off. Then you would not have to bend the feeler gauge.

      You cannot adjust the valves on this quad if you remove the top hat. The valves are attached to the hat.

    Do you have to replace the tapper covers every time you take them off or is it an inspect and replace when needed?

      Totally personal preference but I would inspect and replace when needed. It is not an expensive part so just keep an eye on it and if you need to replace it you can do it then.

    • @biodot88
      @biodot88 Рік тому +1

      Compression is correct. You use a straw, chopstick or long screwdriver on the spark plug hole to see it rise with the piston. Then you wiggle the valve adjusters and if they move you are at compression. At exhaust they will be tight and will not wiggle. Doing this right now.

    • @bossadamsgarage

      If the ticking is coming from the top where the cap is, you'll need to readjust the valve lash more. When you have it correct, it wont tick in the top.

    • @bossadamsgarage
      @bossadamsgarage  Рік тому

      The 250s for this year at least, im not sure about newer, didn't have timing chains, they have 2 metal rods. And if those rods are aligned correctly in that top hat (which they are difficult to align) that could be the noise you're hearing. You have to make sure they're perfectly flush in the divits of the rocker arms.
