The Z6 III with a 33MP stacked sensor would be absolutely phenomenal! But, I'm afraid that something like that, at this moment in time, is just an unrealistic wish. The only cameras with a stacked full frame sensor at the moment are the flagship and very high-end cameras: Z9 and Z8 from Nikon, A1 and A9s from Sony and R3 from Canon, all with a price of $4,000 or more. The Z6 III has to compete with R6 II and A7IV, so has to come with a price of $2,500 or less. And at this price it’s just not possible to put a stacked full frame sensor in a camera, at this moment in time. Eventually, stacked sensors will come for this camera segment as well, but I think we are at least two or three generations away from that moment. So, I think that the maximum we can hope for the Z6 III is a new sensor with a higher resolution than the current one, in the 28-36MP range. And of course the new EXPEED 7 processor. And to have some other features that will make the camera (a little) better than the Zf, and the competition. And regarding the display, it’s absolutely necessary for it to be a flip screen, ideally it would be one similar to the one on the A7RV, best of both worlds. I know that stills shooters don't care about the flip screen, and they prefer a tilt screen, but Nikon needs to start competing in the vlogging segment, a very large and growing one. And at this moment, Nikon almost doesn't matter in this segment and this has to change so that Nikon becomes much more stable and healthy financially - a beneficial thing for everyone, including stills shooters. But for this it’s absolutely necessary that all new camera models that come with a price up to $2,500 must have a flip screen and, of course, the new processor that enables an autofocus at the competition level.
First off, great channel. Like your insights and wish lists. I’ve had my Z6 for several years now and love it! I really like how it handles low light. When I picked up the Z6 it was just to have a play camera, something to get me into mirrorless. Once I saw just how good the images were and spending about another year debating going full in, I sold my D850 and picked up a Z9. I also sold all my F mount lenses and switched to Z lenses. The best thing Nikon has been doing are the updates. It’s almost like having a new camera at times. Well, look forward to the new Z6 whenever it comes out and hope you do a review soon after.
Hallo Kelly!
I was waiting for the Z6III and then the Zf came out and I ordered one of those. So for me, it doesn't matter how great the 6iii is going to be because all my needs are exceeded in the Zf for the amateur walk about photography I do. Professionals are going to have higher requirements of course.
For the most part I think you are on the right track, but some things seem a bit off. If the Z6 III will come with a 33mp sensor there is no way it can do 8k. While the vertical resolution of 8k is about the same as on a 33mp sensor, you wouldn’t be able to fit the horizontal resolution on the sensor due to the different aspect ratio (8k is 16:9, fullframe is 3:2). In order for it to be capable of 8k it would need about 40mp. Also capping the fps at 16fps doesn’t make sense in my opinion. The Canon R6 II can do 40fps RAW without a stacked sensor and I think Nikon would like to match that. I mean if they really go through the length to put a stacked sensor in the Z6 III, artificially limiting it to what you can do with a conventional sensor seems a bit pointless. Oh yeah and my guess is: If it comes with a stacked sensor, there will definitely be no mechanical shutter
I briefly owned a z72 and had issues with AF, if they could fixed that one problem then the z72 would be the camera for me, however when you have 'paying' actors needing head shots then the camera fails too often on eye it becomes unusable and also paying professional models again the AF was failing. So had to sell it and go back to Canon. I hope they do release something soon, seems like they've fixed those issues with ZF, all we have to do is wait and see...
I sold my z7ii for the terrible af. Luckly I sold it just before the z8 came out, once the z8 came out there was a flood of used z7ii on the market thus lowering the price !
I’m not sure about the z6III being good for the next five years, you know there’s always something that will be held back just to temp all the tech chasers that want the newest. These cameras are already good enough, there are some who buy these cameras and don’t even use all the tech, they put it on auto and go. I know a girl who knew nothing about photography a year ago and now she has a photography business, the camera does all the work and I bet her customers wouldn’t know the difference between a good camera or an iPhone.
My prediction is that I will buy one. Sitting with this z7ii sadly the autofocus is just nowhere near where it needs to be. Looking forward to the 6iii.
I think it will be around 33MP, but will have 6k video, not 8k. Other than that, I pretty much agree with your other thoughts on the tech it will have. I really hope they don’t make it bigger, as I feel that the size of the Z6ii is the perfect size for a full frame mirrorless camera!
Think we already have Z6III in the Zf. They might want to give it 33 Mb files and 6K video in the same body as the Z6II, and it will be an incredibly good camera. Think the camera you outline is overkill. Anyway thanks and by the way, I dream my pocket camera the Z1 will arrive next year.
If Nikon want to gain market they need to change some things: - Stacked sensor, 24mpx for the fastest readout possible and good video output without overheating. I think 24mpx keep the Z6III far enough from the Z8 / Z9 even if Z6III have faster readout - No mechanical shutter - At least full sensor full resolution open gate video at 60fps and all other good video things present in the Z8 / Z9. - Dual CFexpress B cards - Selfie screen. The Z6III is the video camera from Nikon. Some kind of selfie screen is needed. - The Z7III having 60mpx or more could be weaker in video and have mechanical shutter.
Simply put I think the Z6 III will pretty much be the Zf in a Z6 II body. They might use a higher-res sensor but right now I think the ZF is a pretty good example of what we can expect in a Z6 III (except for the Z6 III will have a CFE slot instead of a micro SD card slot). But i don't expect it to be that much different otherwise. Now the Z7 III I think will get the Expeed 7 and a "new" 60MP sensor (same one found in the A7R IV).
The synch speed shutter... that's my only gripe with the Z9, I had 1/320s on my D810! Also looking at what they have on the Canon bodies, "face priority exposure", when shooting with TTL flash. That's something I'd like to be copied to our Nikon bodies. That way the Flash will be more accurate in calculating exposure on the face of our subjects.
If its have stacked Sensor than the fps are Higher to Show what a stacked Sensor are can do. U dont need a mechanecal shutter anymore so there are 40fps i think..
If just we could order it today. I have a Z6, but have been shooting birds for about a year. Sometimes I feel my old D800 is better. The AF is equally good in my opinion and then I get the cropping. I was abut to buy a used Z7, but it won't help, except for the cropping, and the Z8 is too expensive. I have decided to wait 😊
Like your list on the Z6 III, as someone that used the Z6 II for video and like some of that the Zf has done to improve upon it. Th Zf is certainly a look at what we can expect in the Z6 III, plus some more. I think most are like us in thinking the delay is that Nikon is working on making the Z6 III a much better performer that competes well on the market. Sadly, the body size will not be the same, an increase in sensor resolution up to the “8K30” level, will require more cooling for video. Good thoughts on a future list we could expect. We’ll have to wait a bit to find out what we will truly get.
I personally, as a videographer prefer the Z8/9 tilt screen. Zf flip screen seems too flimsy and block the way when you plug in cables. Although I would have prefered to see the Z6III launch before the Zf, I guess they want to make money first with the Zf and Z8. Another thing for that "delay" could be the implementation of the new CF Express 4.0 which promisses to be twice as fast as gen 2 and generates less heat!!! Not sure at all about 8K. 6K should be a given and you can still crop into the image. Plus they need to diferentiate from the Z8. You can't pretend to have a "mini" Z8 for half the price!!!! So, wait and see! Wish we have an official announcement Q1 2024 and an effective launch before the summer, say May or June!!! That would be great!!!
Oh great point in the cf express 4.0!! The latest rumors (3rd hand) imply Nikon has both a new expeed7+ processor and a new 33 or 36mpix sensor. The Z6iii is going to be the best all around camera they have ever produced.
Agree on almost all items on your list, i would love electric shutter with the stacked sensor, i don't mind 8k at all, but 4k 120 it's a must, and maybe 6k video would be great, same body as z6.
If it has a stacked sensor that would be awesome but way out of the z6ii price range. I think the z6iii will be the zf with a new sensor in the 30mp range.
My expectations almost match with yours 😁 8k would be cool, but I'd rather have amazing 1080-4k. And perhaps 5/6k to crop for 4k exports. More video features, like false colors etc. Because Z6 has always been more video centric Z8 screen. Z8 af. And everyone's silent about Z7iii. I think they might surprise us with the amount of megapixels. Maybe even 50 iso? Some killer features for landscape photographers. I hope it's the same body (I'll allow like 5-10% bigger for dual xqd and better cooling, haha) but a bit different buttom placement. Like play button reachable with right hand thumb. I also think that one of the ways that Nikon can take the lead is software. Imagine pairing up two cameras, so that when you change exposure on one camera, the other has the same immediately, etc. Built in airdrop/airtag would be awesome. Stuff like that. Innovate in software, because hardware is already sooooo goood on modern cameras, that they should start to approach cameras a bit different now.
You won`t have 8K unless it has at least 36MP so 4K at 120fps is most likely. Also if you go in your menu to flash sync speed and choose the Auto FP option you flash sync to 8,000 sec if you wish.
Stacked sensors do not do better in low light. It's BSI tech that does it. Stacked actually works against better DR and deeper colours. Stacked = Faster
Nikon doesn’t need another 45mpix body. They could use a body to compete with the A7r, so I think it will continue to be the high mpix body, ~60Mpix. Ideal for landscape and product photography.

@@kellysparksphotography Yes. 6K requires a 24-26mp sensor. There is very little benefit to going to 33mp, except that people have been trained to think it matters. Same with going from 45mp to 61mp, a 15% increase in resolution. Photography works in factors of 2.
Agreed. I’m just reporting on the rumors. I think wildlife shooters would appreciate 33mpix (15mp) crop. I’m now thinking (just me at this point) that Nikon might find dual use in the sensor for the rumored Z9H. A new super fast 24mp (ish) stacked sensor for both the Z6iii and the Z9H.
