Quik theory: Luna is the reason the villagers became nicer. Luna was added relatively recently, as with nicer villagers. I think that not having to worry about nightmares has made the villagers less stressed and just generally in a better mood, and thus nicer. Just a simple in-universe reason for the villagers not being mean anymore!
Ngl, in the past games, the villagers were acting like completely aholes to the player; but then Luna showed up and changed that right up! lol

I honestly liked how they were rude to the player Imo, it made the villagers a bit more realistic.
This is only about the part where he said he would name his future daughter luna but I love that name it's so cute

It also seems like Luna got a lot more powerful between New Leaf and New Horizons. In New Leaf you had to actually physically be near her for her to use her dream powers, but in New Horizons she can seemingly reach anyone no matter where they are in the world. Maybe eating all those nightmares helped her power up?
And she couldn't eat Aika Village in New Leaf.
She probably eats the reported and banned dream islands

Quick fun fact: Luna's name in Spanish is Alakama. Which is a pun to the typical phrase "A la cama" or traduced "To the bed".

Animal crossing was made in Japan, so it would make sense for the creators to incorporate their culture into the game.

It makes sense they're part of dreams. I remember watching xxxholic kei and watanuki met one like her who keeps dreams in balloons and cultivate good dreams because of their spiritual power. He would also trade dreams with you so others could experience yours as you do theirs and once you had the dream your dream balloon popped signaling you finished the dream. I dont know why I never thought about this before lol

I made a theory for luna
This story starts when luna was 10 and her dad passed away this caused her to go into a depression state and this caused her to have nightmares about her dad dying now her mum used to own the dream suite on a island so luna had to stay with her uncle no one in this village was happy when luna turned 19 her mum was on her death bed and before she died she asked luna to run the suite now a few years later when she was 24 she was attacked died and she became a sleep parylis demon but she never wanted anyone to be sad so she ate everynightmares and she can only move onto heaven when she has completed her quest
