  • Hey everyone, here is a video I have been working on for awhile. I have a lot of love for Animal Crossing New Horizons, but I do have one big problem with it and I am discussing it in this video. Please remember that this is my opinion, and I would love to hear your opinions in the comments below. Thank you all so much for watching.

The best villagers have ever been was in Wild World. Apparently City Folk broke the hobby system, it remains broken until New Horizons where it’s been erased from existence.

New Horizons has this dialogue for villagers. Talking to them a few times in a row will dig past the 'contextual' dialogue and will unlock more interesting things. I never knew Marshal used to be in a band and hated some guy named 'Nick' :o

Villagers still kinda have hobbies in new horizons, it's just not very obvious.
      Playing hobby: Naruto run
Fashion hobby: Browsing in Able Sisters
      Singing Hobby: Singing
      Nature hobby: Smelling/Watering plants
      Exercise hobby: Exercising

I agree. In animal crossing new leaf, Kyle was in the first town I have ever created in the game. We became best friends with each other and he was so unique compared to other characters. But now. He's literally the same as raymond or phill, or O'hare. Its frustrating and the relationship building was the reason why new leaf and the franchise in general was so dear to me. Now it's more about looks and who fits the islands asthetic.

I played Wild World growing up, and went back to it recently. True, there wasn't much customization, but the villagers made the game enjoyable. They had likes and dislikes, and personalities!! Sure, they were mean at some points, but if you got to know them they were nicer. They would talk about their past, and open up to you. You would know how they felt, and they felt more like friends. In New Horizons they feel more like accessories.
New Horizons is very customizable, sure, but we don't get the animal part of *Animal* Crossing. It's more of a designing and building game.
I just wish the villagers had personalities again. They don't have to be as mean as they were, but they're just cardboard cutouts in New Horizons.

I kinda liked how some were sassy or rude. Not saying I want people to be SO RUDE with me but it's like getting to make friends and enemys at the same time. I also want the type of drama too which would be really fun! My first game was also Wild World and I grew up playing with it. Ever since New Horizon came out I felt so sad because I needed to get enough money to buy a nintendo switch and the game. I'm probably still planning on doing that but I just wish they would change them into their normal personalities again. Now the villagers just feel like toys that yoy can do anything you want to and they have no sorts of feelings AT ALL. TO BE HONEST I had NO IDEA someone named Raymond existed when I played the game wild word. Only JUST figured it out. I kinda had a little crush on MY GUY MY DUDE Filbert. I still have the game Wild World but one of the sad things is that it's *TOO* overated. People are paying more attention to that and forgetting about the old ones. I'm saying is that people will assume new horizons is about creating your island and all cool like that and well-
Okay sorry I'm talking too much 😅 You get my point and I hope Nintendo sees this video.

Having one of my villagers call me ugly, shrimpy and boring was actually refreshing. Also, I loved that the villagers had relationships, like Dotty was dating every guy on my island at least once, pudge had dated like half of the girls on the island and everyone hated Elvis- it was so fun. I loved liking villagers for their personalities, not their looks.

This is exactly why I barely speak to my villagers, they repeat themselves way too much and it gets so tiring I don’t have the energy to stay and chat. My first game was ACNL, I played in 2015 and grew up with that. The dialogue in that game is so much more varied then in ACNH, and it’s disappointing.
I no longer have the want to consistently bug my villagers and speak to them- because now all they do is repeat the same lines over and over. Whilst in ACNL, I could have long conversations that I couldn’t even get bored from until said villager needs to take a break and think on their own.

Its not just the villagers there are many other big problems with New Horizons:
    1. You can only have one island per switch
    2. Crafting is so limited when you can craft one at a time
    3. The Online is so bare bones and the idea you have to wait to see who is arriving as a loading screen is the worst!
    4. There is a lack of rewards when all you're doing is earning Nook Miles
    5. Isabelle repeats the same announcements and only talks about her life rather than telling you which special villager is visiting
    6. There is no way to store your flowers or diys
    7. You cannot trade bugs or fish to your friends
    8. There is no shop upgrades and we only 2 shops which is really not enough
    9. The NookPhone is not as useful because there is just a lack of useful apps
    10. Most Furniture theme sets from past AC games are not in this game.

The thing is that while the whole lockdown did initially help to boost this games' (and the Switch's) sales numbers, it also made it obviously clear that we all spent way too much time on this game over an otherwise relatively short time span. Apart from the updates, it feels as if almost all player's have experienced everything there is to the game, no surprises, no new featrures to discover. We burnt ourselves out basically, in our quest to built the most stunning islands and fill it with the most popular villagers. By the end of May, there was hardly anything to do. I think AC isn't a game which should be played execssively over 8 hours each day, except if you're really inspired and want to get your terraforming done (which can be draining in and of itself).

One thing that I don’t really see people talking about is how clunky and slow it is for almost every action. Almost every action in the game is behind 4 dialogue boxes, a few emotes, and sometimes a cutscene. It’s really frustrating when it takes you 10 minutes to craft fish bait or 5 to move a building.

    • @starlite5154
      @starlite5154 2 роки тому +1

thats true, but when you talked about emotes i thought you were talking about the actual emotes you can do, that's also slow! In new leaf you could touch the icon and find any emote in like a second or 2, but now it favors 8 emotes and if you dare want to do an emote that's not in your 8 favorites then you gotta open your favorite wheel, open the "all emotes" menu, find the emote my moving case by case, THEN you can emote it,and it takes likes 10 seconds, which makes reacting in online very awkward when sometimes you'll react about 10 seconds late to something from the other player

Seems more like a 'crazy' personality to me. I think I get what they were trying to go for though. Lazy villagers are too lazy to clean their houses. A dirty house means bugs show up. I have this exact problem
I started with new leaf and my favorite villager became Kabuki. He was in my original New Leaf town and I fell in love with him. I thought he was so cool!! I spent so much time gifting him things and I just love everything about him.
So imagine the heart break when I get on one day after a break from new leaf only to find a letter in my mailbox saying he moved away. I was so upset. I ended up saving the farewell letter and carrying it in my mail inventory at all times (still have it too)
Fast forward to my New horizons town. I end up trading for Kabuki because I just had to have him. I was ecstatic when the individual trading him agreed to my offer. He was the only reason I ever time traveled in NH and the only reason I ever will.
But now, he has the exact same dialogue as Octavian :( i feel stripped of everything I enjoyed about Kabuki in NL. I still love him and will keep him for sure but I wish I didn't talk to Octavian, walk over my bridge, talk to Kabuki, and get the exact same dialogue constantly

I feel like back then (I started with wild world) there was also a progress in how nice villagers were to you based on your friendship level. It felt like you could really bond with them and they revealed more of their personality with time, rather than in every sentence like in new horizons. There were visits and flea markets and hide and seek (or was that in new leaf? It's been too long) and I miss the interactions and characters we had back then. Also, weren't villagers sometimes rude or insulted you? This always friendly clean slate of a character who always repeats everything is frustrating and it feels like a chore to talk to them in nh.

Now I talk to them in acnh maybe once a day and it feels like a task I never look forward to anymore. When I played the first game, I didn’t know there were specific personality categories. I just thought of each villager as an individual. With acnh, I talk to Elise and get the same exact vibe from her as I get from Eunice (one of my other villagers.) I had Eunice in both games. In the GameCube version, she felt like a sweet grandmother I’d love to talk to and get advice from. In acnh, she feels like the old lady next door who you question if she’s still alive until you see her out walking her chihuahua three months later.

However the latest full installment besides new horizons only had one big update 'Welcome Amiibo'. So basically they couldn't get all the features in time so they added it in later. They wouldn't want to delay the release date AGAIN and people in quarantine really needed it. So they cut corners for the time being and released it without some of its features. I mean, look at the lack luster amount of buildings. That's has to be enough proof. Plus they're adding on to buildings like adding art into the museum later rather than having it at the start.

Back in my GameCube days of playing I remember fondly of villagers scolding me for something I did, and I kind of miss that to be honest. The conversations were just so more diverse, than having Doc and Filbert continuously telling me about the bugs in their house. One feature that I really miss from GameCube was if you walked up to a villager and you were bored you could just simply ask them to give you work, which was a nice touch if you ever needed something to do or were just getting bored. #fixthevillagers

I do love that the villagers can't move away without permission, since I hated that my fave in the original moved away when I was gone for a winter break. That said I want my villagers to be "people" to remember what we discussed like in past games, not to be part of my island's aesthetic and nothing more.

I got more villagers with different personality and while that did shake things up they still end up talking about the same topics. I had always gotten happy walking up to Kyle in new leaf and he would say "seems like we need a little more dancing right now" (or something along those lines lol) and now he talks about how he wants to be famous, just like Marshal and it kinda makes him feel as special as he did when I first built my relationship

I got his amiibo, so I was ecstatic to add him to my acnh island. But then he arrived after Marshal. Their dialogue was either exactly the same or Keaton's was worse, because he had a lower friendship level. They also ruined his house - he used to live in a beach house and now he lives in a parking lot! A parking lot! If you look at acnh guides, you'll see the lack of furniture in the starting game really impacted how repetitive and ugly a lot of the villager houses are now.
I love acnh, I do, and have definitely gotten my money's worth, I am just sad I'm going to have to crack open the old games to get the villager friendship that made me love the series.

@@NikoleBensing1693 I think that's just an ongoing issue with AC, of the devs not always establishing consistent characters for the villagers, rather than a specific issue with NH. In previous games, a villager's personality has been outright changed. There's no reason Keaton couldn't have a beach house in NH, other animals have that kind of look. I had Marshal in NL and he's not the same as in NH either, but there's no reason his house had to be so stylish in NH when in NL his Sloppy set gave the air of a just-about-held-together-disaster, he could've had some of the cardboard box furniture. Personality-wise, Smugs seems to have become more actually smug, while Lazies got some of the goofball and mild flirtiness that Smugs had in NL. I don't think it's purely NH, because the Lazy line where they say they were thinking about your face, with the heart emote, and then that oops, they didn't mean to say that aloud, I'd have found adorable and fitting from Marshal in NL, and I do find it adorable when Cranston says it in NH, it's not a worse line. It's just AC just isn't very consistent.

But I will agree it seems like there’s no interactions or new dialogue options it’s all the same. You can’t do any activists really with your villagers. It feels like a fashion contest all most where everyone wants the cutest stuffed animal they feel like little place holders with no personality’s. That’s actually the same reason why I stoped playing poker camp a month after I downloaded it because the game felt empty ever “villager” asked had me going on the same fetch quest to get them a seashell if it was seashell week. Does anyone else remember those absolutely nightmare inducing commercials where real people wore like felt suit costumes of the humans in game? Hahah I could play for HOURS just talking to the villagers, running their little errands for them while they hardly ever repeated the same dialogue.
I also absolutely love all the new changes in NH but really miss the villager personalities too. I also miss when they would mail you back a letter with a gift if you sent them one, the old friendship building systems from WW, and the hide n seek games/villagers asking to come to your house/scavenger hunt type things that made the game feel all the more immersive. I can see Nintendo listening to everyone and adding a dialogue update in the near future.

    • @nostalgiameadows23
      @nostalgiameadows23 3 роки тому +3

Yeah, I can see that. I do have one idea to make the characters somewhat more unique. Remember how in WW villagers talk about their hobbies. Nintendo can do that but for New Horizons. New Horizons has hobbies of its own, but villagers don't appear to talk about them. I believe it'd be good to make villagers a bit more diverse. I do see the problem with that bit, though. And that is a majority of lazy villagers like to play, a majority of normal villagers like to educate themselves, and a majority of jock villagers talking about their fitness hobby. Some villagers will have the exact same personality and hobby from each other, thus making them less unique. I do believe they can bring back othet hobbies, too. Like eating, fishing, bug-catching, gardening, etc. If some villagers were granted those hobbies (if they ever make it back in NH), it would make the villagers a little more unique too. Either way, I hope Nintendo finds a way around that so we get back the old feelings from the first games.
Tl;dr: Basically I'm saying if we add new hobbies and correlate them with the personalities, it can make villagers somewhat more unique.

I've played since e+, my favorite game since childhood. What I miss the most is things making sense. Sure, in NH you're the resident rep, but it's still kinda rude to bust into people's houses, especially when they say they're in the middle of something. It's odd to be expected to talk to every single person on the island at least once, and they kind of expect you to give them increasingly more expensive presents. In NL, giving them a gift at a birthday party was a third option you could select, not them begging for something with feigned meekness. As far as I've seen in my own play, villagers can no longer decide they want to move out and villagers instantly want to leave almost en masse if you terraform flat for a day. I like being able to choose their plot. I wish we could see their exterior somehow before we chose placement, and I think it's weird that it's 10K to build a plot but expensive to move the very same plot. If someone was fixing up your deserted island why would you not ask what's up before just deciding to leave somewhere you want to build a life, literally?

The *second* biggest problem with animal crossing is the island representatives. When you are the secondary player on the switch, there are limitations of what you can do, like for example, you cannot build bridges or inclines, you can’t help build a shop, you cannot demolish some thing, etc. But the first player on the switch is different. The first player has no limitations in the game. They can almost do anything which isn’t fair to the secondary player. I am the second player on the Nintendo Switch that my sister owns and I have to hop onto my sister’s account to build bridges, help build shops, etc (my sister doesn’t play New Horizons that often.) All I want is Nintendo to fix this issue which has made me go bonkers! I also want island representative in my account as well so I can help build different shops, build bridges, move certain buildings, etc. Not just collect bugs, catch fish, pick up fruit, collect Nookmiles, etc. So if Nintendo comes across this video, looks in the comments and finds this then *probably* they’ll fix this problem! Also I can’t get another switch because my sister says no.

I started with New Horizons then used my graduation money to buy New Leaf and Wild World and man, what a difference. I have five of my villagers' photos in Wild World now and Angus and Rasher are probably my two favorites in town. But the villagers I have there feel so different than New Horizons and it's kind of sad. I loved Hornsby when I met him in New Horizons, but after learning that he's basically the exact same as Zucker or Beau on my friends' islands makes me sad. It makes him feel less special to me. Angus and Rasher feel worlds apart from Rolf, my cranky NH villager. I have 3 normal villagers in NH and they're amazing, but it gets tiring. I usually stick to just talking to one of them which is usually Coco. Kid Cat and Lyman on my island feel so hollow compared to Boone in my New Leaf town or Jay and Kody in my Wild World village. And Lucky in Wild World feels vastly different from Hornsby. I talk to my villagers a lot less now, using my imagination to make up for the lack of character (something I'm used to doing with stuff.) I like each game for a different reason and for what each one does uniquely, but the lack of villager dialogue in NH and the personalities being boiled down to being so dull is really disappointing. I used to talk with my villagers so much when I first got the game, but now I'd rather talk to my villagers in Wild World and New Leaf than my New Horizons ones. I have recorded me playing each game to show one of my friends, I like sharing the experience with her, and she told me she sees the difference too despite having only play New Horizons.
I really hope that they try to improve this or fix this at some point. It can make the game difficult to play once you get far enough into it and it's really disappointing to see.

My most favourite villager is so unpopular, that he doesn't even have fan art. Literally nothing when you search for him. And I love him because he always gave me such energy and optimism everytime I talked to him

I never cared about tier lists. I've heard of loving your neighbours before but Animal Crossing: New Horizons is not like that. It's crazy how you see a villager like Barold and the first thing someone might say is "ew" when they look at him because of his appearence. I know that it's just a video game and people can treat anybody they way they want but I don't feel like judging someone on the outside and say "stay outta my life" brings anything good in a person.

And YES you make the point!!! A main aspect of older games is to just relax and create community which is why I feel like it’s missing something. Bc I also don’t terraform and create, etc all the time, I crave that nostalgic and feeling from the original charm lol.

We need more personalities and more dialogue and make each character unique and special. Make some backstories. Not needed but I kinda want new villagers.

I wholeheartedly agree, that’s why I loved wild world and new leaf! Also the part about only having 10 villagers is so true, I was really looking forward to having more! Or an upgrade to the campsite that was like a hotel or something so you see more villagers more often, great video!

You hit the nail on the head with this video. I've been feeling the exact same way throughout my time playing New Horizons. Now, Population Growing wasn't my first AC game, it was New Leaf. But I loved New Leaf so much I got a gamecube for my birthday just to play the original game to see what the hype was about! And I bloody loved it. Now, I don't remember a lot of the exact dialogue, it's been years since I've played it, but I _do_ remember that the conversations were varied and unique. They felt real, and more like characters than caricatures. I remembered jocks would talk about something other than working out all the time, and lazies wouldn't always talk about food and sleeping. I remembered that the villagers were pretty damn mean, especially crankies and snooties. They were actually cranky and snooty! They're so nice in the newer games. I miss how rude they were. I miss the conversations they would have that weren't just about their personalities, and how they weren't just one note NPCs.
It's a shame too, because when the villagers AREN'T repeating the same generic, one-note dialogue all the time, the dialogue in this game is actually great! I don't remember the dialogue from other games, but the dialogue is a lot wittier and snappier in this game. This game has some fantastic and hilarious dialogue! I just wish we saw more of that though, and had much, much more of it.
I said in another comment there are personality subtypes in this game, but I haven't looked into that much. But maybe they should be expanded upon and explored more.
Fantastic video. You've earned a new subscriber :)

from my experience, i find myself relying on the appearance to give them personalities. elvis is my favorite, because in my case, it felt like he was grumpy and timid and i opened up to him. i pretend i'm married to him. i also ended up getting apollo, where i found he warmed up to me faster, and seemed more happy than elvis.
however, i find jocks and peppies the most insufferable. cookie was my favorite in new leaf and i bought her amiibo years ago. now in nh, when i had merry and peggy also, it was like watching her molt and seeing her become two different vessels as well.
basically, i 100% agree with you. our brains shouldn't have to do the work, and i think the treatment of "ugly" villagers brought out the worst.

I'm really glad to hear this argument being made that isn't just "the villagers shouldn't be so nice!"
So many people use this series as an escape. I'd love to see more in-depth relationships between my neighbors, but I don't think that having villagers say and do some of the things they did in the original game would be fitting at all for the tone the series has taken, nor would it appeal to its target audience. I think, too, with so many stories like the one you described about yourself-- having the villagers as friends during hard parts of your life-- if we bring back villagers saying rude things or whatever, we should consider that. Not everyone playing the game has the best self-image, not everyone playing the game is in the best place. When you're in a depressive episode, it doesn't matter if you /know/ the conversation is a randomized string of text displayed and there's no real person mad at you behind that screen, it's still going to hurt. Maybe things should be all sunshine and daisies, sure, but I think people forget how much those conversations could hurt when they were younger and playing the game.

this is SO TRUE!!! I have felt this emptiness the whole time, and I used to love it when my favorite villagers barged into my house, and my favorite was a snooty because the personality wasn’t shoved in my face, they were there but what shone through more was their individuality. Thank you so much for making this and I think you really hit the nail on the head :)

I played Animal Crossing Pocket Camp as my first game because I couldn’t afford New Horizons. Now I got it for my Birthday present a while back and recently I can’t stop thinking about how the dialogue repeats JUST LIKE POCKET CAMP! No, I haven’t got the same type of Villager two times, it’s just when I talk to them they repeat quite a bit. Like Tutu keeps on saying how she is practicing striking a pose! I thought of a system similar to the Lettering system where one type of each personality focuses on one aspect of their personality like for Peppy villagers. One type could be more focused on singing and usually sings when external music is on, another could be more focused on dancing and can be seen with more different dances like ballet or jazz which I don’t think is currently in game (I’m pretty sure Tutu would fit in this type) and another one could be a bit of a bully and is the “fashionista” of the personality and can be seen shopping at the Able Sisters shop with different clothes every other day. I could go on and on about this.. but please. Not all people of a personality is the same. We need diversity!

I think the fact that villagers don't move out unless they've asked you adds to this. I used to play daily in wild world just to make sure I have a little conversation with characters I grew attached to, and when they left because I forgot to play once I was heartbroken. Now in New Horizons, I just don't care for them. They only villager I currently talk to just gives me one line per conversation after the "let's talk" option, when in wild world you always had at least 5 or smth. I don't care for a single character in my town right now and only want the three characters I grew the most attached to to move in for old times sake, and I already know I will be hella dissapointed with the interactions I'll have with them.

My first AC game was Wild World and I was 8 by then. I remember Octavio moved into my town and I thought he was so ugly I wanted him out immediately, but I as I talked to him and ended up loving him and now he is one of my favourite villagers. In New Horizons, all villagers are nice and at the beginning I felt bad for wanting some of them to move out, but now it feels like nothing. Even with some villagers that I have a high friendship level, I wouldn't mind them leaving because I know I can easily replace them with those that remind me of my childhood and I think it is sad. Also, I mis SO MUCH having non-nice villagers. The old grumpy villagers like Octavio used to take A LOT of time to actually build up a friendship with them and make them show a bit of love for you and it felt so good to know that that grumpy animal that used to think you were annoying now cares about you. I just had friends in AC:WW while now I just care that my island looks pretty

The fact that Nintendo was so quick to fix the Bunny day egg issue, quick to fix the recent camera glitch setting and also be quick to fix many other smaller issues.... (not including making life easier in the game issues lol)
We know for sure Nintendo is watching and listening. I genuinely hope though that they are listening to this issue. It’s like our villagers have no SOULS!!! So everyone please share this video like crazy! Tweet this to Nintendo like crazy! But most of all be genuine and respectful!!!

Hey everyone! I'm so happy to see you guys reacting to my video. However, I do see one common complaint and I want to address it. I know the beginning is long as I am discussing why I made this video, criticism within gaming communities, and the Animal Crossing Community itself. I am sorry this is a long intro and I will work on this for future videos. If you would like to skip this and get straight o the point of the video, I believe that skipping to 4:55
I hope this helps anyone who just wants to get to the "Problem" with Animal Crossing New Horizons. Also another thing I have heard and will be changing is the blurry screens. I do that as filler for the most part. However, I have seen that it has been hurting peoples eyes and making them dizzy so I will be removing it for future videos. Thank you all so much for watching, liking, and commenting!

I totally agree! I started on wild world and really loved some of my villagers. I recently had Static in NH, who I loved in WW but I let him leave in NH! I miss picking my reply so much. I current have 2 jock types and I just avoid one at all costs cause I don’t want to repeat the conversations all the time. An update with additional dialogue is definitely needed. And I’ve only been playing for a month.
