I saw Gladiator II the other day and he more than holds his own in the role. He has big shoes to fill trying to keep the franchise going that Russell Crowe made his own and I think I was probably comparing him to Crowe in the first half of the movie but I did stop thinking about Crowe and focused on his performance by the second half or maybe earlier. I could see Ridley Scott making a third and Paul really shaking off the shadow of the first movie and this really making a name for himself. His accent is really good also - didn't hear his Irish accent come out once. Well worth watching.
As a Portuguese, I couldn’t help but notice that the flowers in his jacket reminded me of the carnation flowers from the Portuguese Carnation Revolution. And I think that’s beautiful. 🌹

I wanted to see if all the PR had any validity, so I watched three of the four you mentioned. This guy is the real deal. The best I’ve seen sine the two Hoffmans.

Not only is he mega talented, loves what he does, humble, handsome from head to toe. You can tell this man has a gorgeous soul. He’s emotionally intelligent. And the accent! Come. On. Gladiator II was the first acting role that I saw Paul in, and I was very impressed with his performance. Not only was his acting great, but he fought like a badass too. I just read that Pedro Pascal called him "Brick Wall Paul" because he got really fit. 😂 I'll watch Aftersun next, and will no doubt be blown away by this talented young man's versatility.
After Aftersun, I would highly recommend watching him in the series Normal People and the films, Foe and All of Us Strangers. His was duly recognised for his roles in Normal People, Aftersun and All of Us Strangers. But I am also very fond of his portrayal of Junior (and AI Junior) in the beautifully haunting sci-fi psychological thriller Foe - in which he is well matched by his co-stars Saoirse Ronan and Aaron Pierre.

True, Paul Mescal comes across has having an old soul but while somehow also managing to exude boyish charm. It's hard to believe that only 5 years ago he was involved in filming his very convincing and compelling portrayal of an insecure senior high school student in the series Normal People.
When I first saw the trailers I thought it was Josh Hutcherson in the role and wasn't really interested in the film, but seeing Paul on Hot Ones and now this, he gives off a totally different vibe and seeing the movie actually seems worthwhile. Have to look up his other movies.

It is a little ridiculous to have British people making films about gladiators with Irish and British actors. That's from a historical point of view of course. I am sure Mr. Mescal is a wonderful actor, but still. I understand that the gladiators came from different parts of the empire, but the ruling class was Roman, so I would want to see Italians with Italian accents in that type of movies not a version of that director's. Actually, that horse video is well worth a watch for Mescal's charisma alone. But nobody could be unimpressed by how effortlessly he mounts that huge horse from a running start - twice!

But Mescal also has a reasonably strong presence in the trailers and teasers, despite the fact that he's meant to be portraying a reluctant leader. Curiously, I revisited Russell Crowe's appearance in the original movie, which was made back in his youth, and at a time of his own relative obscurity internationally. Crowe didn't bring as much gravitas to (at least parts of) that film as some people seem to think. BTW, I'm an Aussie, and I remember going to Australian film festivals and theatres and watching Crowe as a young local talent, including in Proof and Romper Stomper (the latter being a very disturbing film in my own youth for its sexual violence).
There are a certain type of charisma that fighters and warriors have, that Paul Mescal, at least now, in this phase of life and career still don’t have, Russel Crowe, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves etc… the casting failed… make the sense your explanation but still doesn’t answer to the demand for this movie…
Spoiler alert: Maximus did slay the evil emperor of the Roman Empire in the old movie. That will create a legacy. Disappearing everyone from that movie, off screen, to create a completely unrelated story would have made zero sense.
