- Flaming Youth were a British rock band, active in the late 1960s. They were not commercially successful and are remembered primarily as Phil Collins’ first band that had a recording deal.
In 1969, American singer John Walker, of the Walker Brothers, toured in England, and was accompanied by keyboardist Brian Chatton, bassist Gordon "Flash" Smith, guitarist Ronnie Caryl and drummer Phil Collins. After the tour, they decided to get on together, calling themselves Hickory, and recorded a single in 1969, "Green Light/The Key".
The group met songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, who were looking for a band to record an album they were working on, so they changed their name to Flaming Youth. They released the album 'Ark 2' in 1969. In November, New Musical Express reported that the concept album was the subject of an hour-long television special, which the group had filmed in the Netherlands.
The LP was released on Fontana Records in the UK to some critical but no commercial success. There was also a follow-up single recorded, "Man, Woman, and Child". The band had difficulty getting gigs and the band finally broke up in early 1970.
Phil Collins joined Genesis and the rest is history.
This is one of the recordings made by AVRO television with the recording of the TV special of Ark 2.
Recorded on 1 November 1969.
Broadcast date 14 May 1970

Surprised that Phill is already singing a long time before he took over from Peter (genesis). He is one the greatest musicans ever.!thks a lot Phill
yet Peter's deeper sound was special for the drama songs
@Hany M.Gamal a Peter fan expresses it and a Phil fan immediately jumps on fan
He actually very prominently sang all the back up vocals with Peter in those early Genesis days. There's even 2 songs where he sings lead. One on each of the first two records he did with them.
@Hany M.GamalNo worries Hany. All one has to do is listen to Seconds Out or watch any of the live videos of just how well Phil sang Peters lead vocals after Phil took the helm. I always loved just how easily and how great he did it, too. He handled all the deeper, dramatic parts quite nicely in my estimation. And with great enthusiasm and passion as well. Just listen to the closing section of Suppers Ready, or Musical Box to see just how great Phil sang those parts.
Even then he had that complex playing..This off beat thing with the hihat foot and the fills, his singing while playing in 6 time with the polyrhythms..
Collins even then a masterful player..
I actually really like it! Big fan of Phil. I wondered what he looked like young. Which im sure is a question that has crossed the mind of the masses. Lol. So i searched Phil collins 1960s and found this gem . Brilliant!
I don't know... There's plenty of pics and videos of him when he was drumming with Genesis, before he took over lead vocal. And from only right around a year or so after this. And he doesn't look particularly different. It doesn't seem too big a mystery. Though it is always interesting to see him with a full head of hair. And then esp with a full beard, in the early - mid 70s, as well.
For a one album band with no real success there is a surprising amount of available footage of them to enjoy. It's great to be able to see these clips!
very good.....................................................................
Phil Collins very young, with hair!
😂
1969😆😆😆😆
🤣
WOW 1969! Another time era. Excellent black & white video! Brian Chatton was Excellent on those keys! 🎹 Thank you for sharing! 💖
"the Keys" gives me the obvious>>GENESIS---did Banks learn from Chatton?
This is a really epic song..
Amazing progressive song.
Could be my new fave Phil Collins tune!
LOVE Flaming Youth. The entire ARK 2 lp is fantastic & worth the listen. Whole thing is here on UA-cam so check it out for free..then find the vinyl cuz you’ll love it so much! Quirky, theatrical, & melodic…you’ll get caught up in it. Enjoy!
Legal ver o Phil Collins cabeludo.
Sounds like Living in the past by Jethro Tull.
I thought the same
besides the obvious GENESIS sound, i hear Paul Revere and Raiders and Amboy Dukes---i gues it is the era
Living In The Past was released in May 1969 as a single, right around the time Ark 2 would have started creation, being released in October. Entirely possible the songwriters (not members of the band) might have taken from it consciously or not.
He sounds exactly like he does now, how is that possible
Reminds me of early Yes, progressive yet melodic.

Big "The Doors" influence. Even has a little bit of a Chicago vibe.
More like some hybrid of Jehtro Tull and Pink Floyd.
The face of Kurt Cobain with the voice of Stevie Winwood. Hahhaha!!!
exactly
And Before and certainly 10 times better than both. Hahaha
The middle eight sounds strangely Genesis listening back now..... Great little song this.
Oh my god c'est à quelle année ça c'est en noir et blanc c'est fou j'adorais voir ça merci
0:10 : maybe this young singer/drummer will have a decent career in the music industry. Just sayin'.
He can`t play drums as we see here. Nice wannabe Winwood vocals tho.
Muisc ove 60s so real then 2020.can,t stand 21 centre music
and Phil making future Gabriel faces as he sings--i am weirding out on this one
Fun fact. Ronnie Caryl also auditioned for Genesis and played a gig with them. In 1990s he acted as the Phil Collins` tour guitarist.
❤
The first part as well as the end of the song sung by Phil sounds a bit like Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past" , don't you ?
... song title ... very ahead of ... David Bowie's ... " Changes" ... great video a gem actually ... thanks for it ...
💃💃💃👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Nice to see Phil smiling. This was before his breakup with Andrea and Prianne.
Met veel haar
4:17 the eighties style of singing was invented at this moment in 1969 :)
4:51 :)
How come I can't find Flaming Youth on spotify?
Ark 2 used to be on there. A long, long time ago. Guess it’s just not available for some reason.
ha, is that Tony Levins' great grandfather playing bass
Ronnie Caryl (the bassist) is actually 7 years younger than Tony Levin
Not the worst song I've heard.
No tiene audio.
Ironically in 1970 Phil Collins was a way better known than the band he joined later this year.
What was Genesis same time? An obscure cult band.
