      Yeah, Leynos 2 is probably the best side-scrolling mech game I've ever played. I need to go through it again, for old times sake.

    Appreciate the love for my localization efforts on the English patch.
    Sidenote: There is very much a story in both GG & GGII. But it is not told from the perspective of you, the player, being some God-like entity or hero. Rather, it fully embraces the idea that you are nothing more than a cog in the machine and are helpless to do much in the way of turning the tide of war.

    • @KeiNova
      @KeiNova  9 місяців тому +2

      You are welcome. I'm assuming your part of the team that did the patch? Honestly, I would have mentioned people individually if I could have found information out there besides 'Gungriffon II Localization team'. I mean, a lot of credit goes to anyone willing to work on a Saturn game these days.
      You are right, I went into a little more detail about it in my first video? I meant there is not a conventional storyline. There is a setting, and it all takes place during an event. There just isn't anything else. It's a world, and it has a little bit of lore - just no active storyline at all.

    • @TheSouthernSegaGentleman
      @TheSouthernSegaGentleman 9 місяців тому +3

      @KeiNova I'm the guy actually doing the work in a sense. The one translating and changing the script out line by line. Making it work and putting the patch together.
      KnightOfDragon has aided me by figuring out where the script is stored and manipulating font size, scroll speed, etc. He's the programmer if you will. His patcher utility is the program I utilize to make said patch available to the community.
      Laquerware has been an aide in "localizing" some of the more obtuse translations and helping with research into the audio part of the translation.
      That's the whole crew at the moment. The plan is to fully translate everything on screen, including in game messages and subtitles during the cutscenes. Also re-dubbing all the audio/radio chatter you hear in the briefings and during missions.

    • @KeiNova
      @KeiNova  9 місяців тому +1

      Is there any place where you announce updates at all? My channel is focused entirely on games like this, and I'd love to continue to provide updates on the patch - as well as actually credit all of you for the work you've done. I know quite a few people who still play the game and really appreciate just the work on menus, because it made the game so much more playable. @@TheSouthernSegaGentleman

    I have a few comments:
    1) The ATM in the first game also homed in to enemies, but you had to keep them in your reticule until they hit.
    2) How hard it is to program games for a system has very little to do with how hard it is to make a translation patch.
    3) These games do have a story. There are walls of text telling it. It's just too dry without any named characters or emotional hooks.
    4) Gungriffon 1 and 2 have very basic controls. Besides moving, jumping and shooting, the only other action is activating night-vision mode. The Saturn controller is simply inadequate for an FPS with fast movement and free aiming (as opposed to Doom clones where you don't need to aim in the vertical axis).
    5) If these arcadey score-attack games can be considered simulators, then I have no idea what mecha fans understand by a simulator. In the world of driving games, Gran Turismo and Forza are considered simcade at best, and here you have these impossible machines overcoming massive inertial moments as if by magic, jumping and hovering in mid-air, and that's considered a simulation? The least I'd expect in a tank-like sim is a ballistics model and location based damage. Even World of Tanks calculates shell penetration considering angle of impact and armor thickness. Gungriffon has a health bar. It is more grounded than something like Zone of the Enders, but so is Call of Duty compared to many other shooters and that doesn't make it a mil-sim.

    • @KeiNova
      @KeiNova  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the comments, I always like hearing what people think about what I say, and I've been thinking about this for an hour or so.
      1) The ATM would not function for me no matter how much I tested it in the original. It wouldn't lock in or even make any indication that it would lock on. I just re-tested it, and nothing. There are a lot of complaints about it not being manual compliant, and praise for it being accurate in the sequel.
      2) That may be true, but Saturn code is difficult to even understand or obtain. There are massive communities still trying to extract the code for Panzer Dragoon Zwei - because despite it all being on disc, everything has been lost. Breaking into the code and changing text to a language on Saturn is a monumental task that does deserve some respect - especially considering the context sensitive nature of Japanese.
      3) Gungriffon does not have a story and there is no wall of text. There is a short couple of sentences which describe the world-state, and why HIGH-MACS were needed. There is world-building, and a final mission - but there is no 'story'. It's merely a paragraph history of what is going on. Every game has done this, and there aren't even conclusions with these games. This is a trend with all four games, and it isn't something like MechWarrior 2 where you're presented with novelistic tie-ins to briefings and debriefings. Briefings are simple describing suggesting battle tactics, where enemies enter from, and how they should be dealt with.
      4)The controls are basic because of the controller, but they are in a simulation style. HIGH-MACS need to control through acceleration, deceleration, and using the limited tools at hand. Is it a basic simulation, yes! But it is more of a simulation then something like Armored Core. Saying this isn't enough would be like saying MechWarrior 2 on Saturn and PS1 isn't a MechWarrior game.
      5) Simulation is something that tries to mimic the control system of a theoretical Mech. It really is just that. They don't focus on accessibility mostly, but providing an experience that makes it feel like you are controlling a vehicle. Games like MechWarrior 2 on PC were more akin to this and provided a lot better of a control system through the use of the keyboard. It's really cool, and I suggest playing it if you can get it running. Gungriffon Mechs aren't actually defying anything. They are cumbersome, difficult, and prone to getting stuck on everything. Basically, they are walking weapons platforms. I just have played these games a lot and know what I'm doing. Blaze though, it is a little further from a simulation then any of the other games. When I mentioned 'Arcade' I meant that the game bases a lot of its playability on obtaining scores and providing personal challenges. That is usually the only definition of an 'arcade' element that applies specifically to 'arcade' type games.
      Anyhow, that's what I have to say about that. I respect how you feel about it, and I appreciate you watching my video.

      It's more of an 'obscure japanese title that sounds cool for the sake of being cool'. It's a good game though, from the 90s. I suggest checking it out. A lot of these games have titles like this, definitely something that could be tackled in Rick and Morty - if they wanted to parody mecha stuff.
