What I love the most about this episode was that Jane initially said no. We get to see in real time her make the decision to risk her heart again when Bing accepts her decision and wishes her the best, mentioning how wonderful he is. Seeing that he supports and wants what is best for her shows her it's safe for her to try again. So she takes the leap. Laura does such amazing work in this episode. We see her make so many shifts in such a short period of time. Kate gives her a great script to give her the room to do it. It's so satisfying.
I just finished re-listening to the audiobook version of The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennett (which watching this series inspired me to do) so it's great to hear Kate talk about it. I was struck in listening how much Bing quitting med school explained and surprised that it was decided on so late. Kate did such a great job on the book and it adds to the viewing experience immensely. I'm going to go back to Lydia's book now, just for the New York part because it's so, so good.

One of my friends who was pre-med at the time kept criticizing the show for claiming Bing was a med student but not having him act like a med student, and I kept defending the show to her, so when this episode came out it felt very vindicating to be able to say, "See? They did have a plan all along!" Now it's very funny to learn that that hadn't actually been the plan the whole time

I have multiple friends who quit med school after a semester or a year or two because they realized it wasn't for them. They've all had to deal with the financial repercussions of that choice, with the loans they'd already taken out, but they are all a lot more happy for the decision, so i think the bing argument of "i just realized this wasn't what i was passionate about" while an easier choice to make for him because of his financial status, is a very real struggle for students and i appreciate that so much more now as an adult with friends who have gone through this than i did 7 years ago when i first saw this and was in high school with no context.

I love that every side character, sans George and Caroline, has some form of a growth arc be it large or small. In the book Jane, Lydia, and Bingley are the same exact same people from beginning to end. This is what makes LBD such a great modern retelling of a classic story, and even improves the story.

I don't know why, but something about this episode and Bing's story about quitting med school makes me really appreciate how well this adaptation maintained the nuanced differences in Bing and Darcy's economic situations. Like in P&P, they are both rich. But Darcy is from a long line of gentleman landowners and has family connections to royalty, while Bingley's father was a tradesman and Bingley is looking for an estate to buy to become a gentleman landowner. His position is tenuous. The economic anxieties in P&P don't just belong to the Bennets, they belong to Bingley's sisters (especially Caroline) as well.
To have Darcy own Pemberly Digital and thus have wealth through capital (though he also works) vs to have Bing training to be a doctor (which, though high-paying, is still ultimately a workforce/labor situation)...it just captures the relative situations from P&P originally so perfectly. It also gives me a lot of reason to view Caroline as something other than a one-dimensional villain, too.
I'm a medical student. My parents are physicians. I can think of nothing that would frighten them more than if I dropped out of medical school, especially if there was even a hint of the idea that I had done it for a romantic relationship. I can only imagine that's how Bing's family sees it: that he dropped out for Jane, even though he'd secretly been unhappy for years and dropping out would have been best for him regardless of Jane, if he'd been able to come to that conclusion on his own. The reason for that fear ties back to economic anxiety. How will Bing support himself? Will he be able to maintain the quality of life that he grew up with, and is accustomed to? Unlike Darcy, he has no capital to fall back on. Most likely just an undergraduate degree in something STEM-related, and god knows that's not enough to get you a job with an income comparable to that of a doctor.
If it's worth it to Bing, he should get to decide to pursue that path. Obviously. But I can sympathize with the fear that Bing's imaginary family must feel over this, and the concern that he might regret it later. Also, Bing being so willing to disregard his own judgement makes so much sense for him given that he likely has two living parents whom he has respected and trusted and probably depended on for guidance just as much as Darcy, compared to Darcy himself whose parents are deceased, and who is used to making his own decisions. Bing had too many people concerned for him, and Darcy probably not enough.
Sorry to be such a downer on literally the second-most romantic episode of all time lmao. I was so proud of Jane when I watched this episode, that she was taking steps to protect herself while still having the courage to pursue this relationship that she wants. In a way that forces them both to be better.

I did a Jane Austen class in college where I wrote a creative piece from P&P so I did a lot of research on the various proposals in it and the symbolism and all that. One of the big ones with P&P is that the successful proposals are outdoors where the characters have the opportunity to feel more free and open to follow their heart rather than indoors under the confines of others' opinions and the code of marrying for advantage before love. All that to say, it's interesting to see the colors that Bing and Jane are wearing - they match each other very well (even his green matching the green on her shirt) and have strong spring symbolism. It's like they're getting through the struggle of winter and opening up into the newness and rejuvenation of spring, so even though it's indoors, it still feels like we're following along with the outdoor theme (whether intentional or not).

I remember there were people (at least me) who headcanoned that Bing had actually tried to quit med school before, when he first bought the house at Netherfield, which explained why Caroline and Darcy came along for that summer, and was also a factor in why they pulled Bing away from Jane and small-town life. Their argument to convince Bing would be that it's time to give up this girl who's using you and doesn't love you, and get back to what you're supposed to be doing, becoming a doctor (like he owes this to his family). I also really loved Jane not taking him back right away and setting boundaries for what their life in New York would be like, because 10 years ago I was afraid it would just get wrapped up in quick absolution so we could move on to Lizzie and Darcy's romance. Not that I wasn't looking forward to that, but this conclusion of Jane and Bing feels so much more satisfying and less of a rom-com trope. And finally, this was one of my very favorite Jane hairstyles. I know there were a few gifsets going around on tumblr highlighting fan favorites.

I found this series in 2017 from Mary Kate Wiles’ channel. Going in I didn’t realise that it was based off of anything and I didn’t know p and p. This was the first romance plot that I can remember seeing/ reading and I distinctly remember getting to this episode and being like, “yes, this is what a relationship Should be like” six years on and thirteen year old me is still right!

It's been ten years and I'm still squealing at this episode like the 16 year old that I was way back when it first came out🧡I don't think I realised this at the time, but Jane saying "yes I want to be together but I want to do it on my terms" was pretty influential for me to see in media

i remember when this came out - i had gotten my sister into the show a few weeks before (somewhat evilly, i might add) and when this episode aired, my sister saw it first for whatever reason. she texted me and was like "you're gonna love this episode, you're such a bingley girl". she was not incorrect and i still love this episode to this day lmao

It’s been great to hear from you, Kate! This episode was another absolute delight and a wonderful ending for these characters 😊
I feel like the “I think I left my camera on” only adds to the fantastical Disney feel because that totally sounds like the punchline at the end of a comedy movie or something, idk like something from Monsters Inc yknow? Idk if this is coming off as a compliment but I absolutely mean it as one. In any case that vibe has been one of my favourite things about Jane and Bing. They’re obviously very well developed realistic characters, but there’s also a bit of magic about them because they’re both so sweet and deserve the world 🥹
