  • I have been producing macro photography images for years, so many I don't like to count! However I had never had a go at macro photography stacking and in this video I show you how far (or not) a complete novice at the technique can come in just a few weeks. For those macro photographers out there or new macro photographers wanting to have a go this is my experience and hopefully a few points to learn from. Please do add your own experiences and tips in the comments below the video. This is something I am not an expert in and all advice is useful to me and the wider UA-cam audience. Many thanks for watching and don't forget to like and subscribe!

    Have found using the back screen in combination with a monopod ( with the head set firm but still movable ) a good starting point especially on over cast days days when you can see the image on the screen clearly from a good distance away so keeping your head and body clear from the subject . Found it just gives that little bit of extra support. I always use some form of artificial lighting to keep everything consistent. ( Used this method - single shot not stacked, on the Hoverfly shot I posted up on your Facebook group.) It's all one big learning curve for all of us Scott ! 👍

      Thanks Glenn, impressive shot on the group by the way. I think I fell into the trap of watching a number of other youtubers who make this method look very easy when they do it😂 Still it's facinating the amount of detail it brings out when you get it right. Practice will definitely make perfect with this one! All the best👍🙏

    Scott, a great video on stacking. A term I'd heard before, but knew nothing about. Really gonna have a look into it now after your video.
    Thanks for sharing Mate, and see you on the next one 📸👍🏽

    One reason i bought the OM-1 is the in built stacking system, it works really well. Pro capture is another bonus

      Don't think that I havn't been eyeing the Olympus system up Brian. What i need is Olympus to send me one to test!! Have to say I have been tempted a few times!!🙏👍

    Great video Scott. Focus stacking is extremely hard especially out in the field for all the reasons you mentioned. Early days for me trying to stack and I limit myself to 15 images. As I only really do macro now I moved to OM systems which has definitely helped my keeper rate. The tip on taking a starting image and end image between stacks is going to save people a ton of time when they come to post processing.

      Hi, thanks for watching and your kind comments. How are you finding the OM system? I must admit I keep getting tempted😀There are a number of features I really like the sound of. I know one photographer who switched and loves it and someone else who went from nikon to Olympus but back to nikon again!! 👍

      @@scotttilleyphotography I really like the OM1 paired with the 90mm. I only do macro and the system ticks a lot of boxes for me with the 2 x magnification lens and depth of field micro four thirds sensor naturally provides. The built in stacking and focus bracketing are very good features and the main reason I went with the OM system. Having the ability to change the focus differential is another great feature. Still early days for me learning focus bracketing but have seen some very impressive 80+ image stacks. Not quite there myself but loving the system.

    Some good tips and learning in this video Scott. I guess you have to fail to learn the right way. Thanks for sharing your experience how you go about it and what happened. Also I’m looking at a trail camera (I mentioned it before) do you know much about the Blazevideo A280W? Maybe looking at that one. Thanks for sharing the video mate cheers 🍻 👍🙏

      Thanks for watching Adrian, yep this technique is a learning process but it would be boring if we nailed everything first time😀 I have not had experience of the Blazevideo A280W but looking at the spec it looks pretty decent. I am not sold fully on the local wifi connection as for me it has had limited use. One of the ones I use has this and its ok if you want to download images etc to your phone without physically going to the unit, however you still have to be fairly close (15 metres) so unless its located at a very sensitive location and you don't want to approach it has some use. All the best mate👍👌

    I do a lot of Butterflies which don't lend themselves generally to stacking but first thing in the morning is possible. Unfortunately my camera doesn't feature a stacking function. Apparently it is possible to shoot a series though using the remote control. But still haven't been there yet so well done Scott 👍

      Thanks Mark, from what I have been seeing the Olympus system has the stacking function! In fact what with that and the pro-capture!! Sony need to catch up. This is definitely a technique I will keep practicing as some of the results I have seen are stunning. All the best mate👍

    Great video Scott. I got lucky with a dragonfly image a while ago which was 5 stacked images using the Canon in camera focus stacking. It wasn’t a true macro shot but more a close up with a long lens. I am planning when the conditions permit to go out and try true macro focus stacking using the Canon and see what results I get. Benefits of the in camera stacking is that you can use a tripod. Cheers Keith

      Cheers Keith. It does seem that technology has taken a leap forward in the macro area. I wouldn't have dreamt of hand held stacking a few years ago! All the best mate👍

    Thanks for another interesting video Scott. I believe that the new Sony A6700 has an auto stacking function but I haven't yet seen a review of how well that works.

    I shoot with the same Sony body & lens you use. I have been shooting macro without flash for a little while. Recently I purchased a Godox flash, but I am struggling with the camera & flash settings. Any chance of a vlog on the subject? maybe I'm not the only one having problems with flash!

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  10 місяців тому

      Hi, I will see what I can do. I wouldn't call myself an expert on the use of flash so I keep it very simple. Maybe a short explanation video of what I do coming soon 🤔 👍

    Would you think it posable for a firmware update to add focus stacking or bracketing to a Sony A7R3 or A7R4?

    • @scotttilleyphotography
      @scotttilleyphotography  10 місяців тому

      It may be possible but I would suspect Sony would keep it for a new model down the line. They do like us to keep upgrading 🥺

    • @scotttilleyphotography

      Hi Linda, the flash I use in this video is a Neewer. The model is out of stock on Amazon so I have listed in the description of the video the current equivelent. I have also heard good things with regard to Godox flashes as well but havn't tested any. All the best!👍
