Evolution Of The Mustang 5.0L Coyote Engine | Gen 1, Gen 2 & Gen 3

- Coyote Engine Gen 1, Gen 2 & Gen 3 differences are explained by Landan with LMR.
Ford brought back the iconic 5.0L in the 2011 Mustang. However, this time it boasted 412 Horsepower and 390 lb-ft Torque! The Mustang 5.0L Coyote engine has evolved into the Boss 302, VooDoo 5.2L, and the Predator 5.2L.
The all-new Coyote engine could make serious horsepower without affecting drivability with many aftermarket parts. Although these engines were very similar, Ford changed little things throughout the years. Ford produced a remarkable engine with lower emissions, better economy, more power, and less vibration. This brought new light to the Ford Mustang!

The Gen-3 with a few bolt-on mods (JLT intake, E85, Headers and 10-speed trans is a 10 second car. Dang unbelievable!👍
You are correct but even less then that, factory headers with a cat delete , E85 tune, and a rear tire. Completely stock motor no JLT needed
Brian can finally pay Dom back.
@@scarecrow6292
Lol. Yep.
Most mustang engines with a tune gets you decent gains just goes to show you ford makes some great V8 engines and even their 4 bangers are decent for what they are
@@cerogravity8653 seriously your not wrong. I have a 5.0 s550 but those lil ecoboosts are respectable for what they are.
64,000 miles so far on my ‘18 GT with the bone stock Gen 3 engine. Love it!
I owned a new 2017 GT and now have a 2020 GT (bought new). Something overlooked is that for a physically large engine, they Coyote is fairly light. Also, fuel economy is very respectful on long drives. I've gotten 30mpg cruising the interstate at 75-ish.
Love the Gen 3 Coyote in my 21 GT. Its a beast.
One thing not mentioned here is Ford used 2 different head bolts - 11mm and 12mm.
12mm bolts went deep into the block, tying into the main webbing (the strongest part of the block). The 11mm blocks used shorter bolts that ended about where the knock sensors are located in the valley. In some high boost applications this could result in cracking in that area. It is possible to convert an 11mm block to 12.
11-12 coyote 12mm
Yeah, that was a big problem when we were building that engine. Working in the plant where we build these engines is pretty wild sometimes. It's a great engine and i can honestly tell you that we, the employees, take pride in our work and build the best engines we can for our customers. Btw, I'm not a company man, i just take pride in doing my job correctly.
@@Reggiestreet
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they went back to 12mm for gen 3.
@@177SCmaro Yes they did go back to 12mm head stud's but that's not something for gen 2 owner's to worry about to much, especially if they aren't planning to go with boost.. And if they are it's an easy fix. And if you aren't planning to go past 8 psi of boost you really don't need to stud them. Also 99% of shop's that throw blowers' on the gen 2's they stud them along with Oil pump gears and a crank sprocket.. And honestly from what "known Tuner's" say, there are more cons to the gen3 then there are with the gen 2.. Not knocking what anyone has they are all bad ass cars.. All the Coyote's are bad ass in my opinion..
@@marcasswellbmd6922 Especially when some crazy dude out in Idaho throws one in an old Camaro and runs 9's.
Great video and all nice cars!
Powerhouse engines no matter the gen!🔥
You did an excellent job explaining the 3 generations of the Coyote Engine. Thank You!
Great video Landan! You are a pro at presenting information to us enthusiasts! Love the dyno videos
thank you LMR, love these explanations. Also thank you for great shipping and communications when ordering products. You've been a great help in my 1993 Ford Lightning restoration!
LMR rocks! Thank you for making awesome informative videos 🙌🏻
One helluva video LMR
Excellent comprehensive breakdown of the Coyote engine, crush it Landan.
Thx 🙏 for sharing the knowledge and information ℹ️!!!
Literally the video I’ve been looking for finally thank you guys for explaining this

Loving the coyotes engines!❤️🇺🇸, And another part this man sounds like "Chaos Gaming" really good intro and really energetic feeling to watch! Keep it up!💪🤘🇺🇸
Great show and very well explained thank you very much ( nick from Sydney Australia )
Hi Nick, Thank you! We are glad you enjoyed the video!
Solid info!
You really know your fords :) cant wait to build my 5.0 one day
THANK YOU SO MUCH. TOTALLY AWESOME EDUCATION.. GREAT MOTORS FOR ANY APPLICATION.
The development of tuning these as well been very interesting... That Coyote is very tempting but my move to the swap I did was the tuning as well.
The biggest upgrade that mattered was the switch to forged connecting rods in 2015 for the second generation. That made it much less risky to run high boost.
Thanks for the information.............
Hey Landan! Excellent video! Suggestion for next vid, you guys should cover the differences between the base GTs and the performance packs. Caranddriver has an article about it. The gen 2 and gen 3 both come with a little more hp and tq in the performance pack versions. I love these cars 😍😍😍😍
Actually no difference with performance pack, I own one, the only dif is in the PP2 in the gen3s got a Voodoo intake mani
Love my FBO gen 1. Has a ported 18 manifold
WOW!!!! GEN 3 IS THE WAY TO GO!!!! I AM SO IMPRESSED!!!!
Great info. Time to push that coyote. 💪
Nice grate video
Ford Australia.took the GEN 1 engine placing a 1.9 liter Supercharger in 2011 giving the customer 2 power levels of 315KW and 335KW in the Falcon sedan and utility.
Fantastic video! But can we talk about how uncomfortably loose the dyno straps are?😂
Damn I forgot about the voodoo engine I was just about to order a gen3 coyote now I’ll just get the voodoo
Can you use(swap) any gen head on any 5.0 coyote like with the 4.6? 0r only gen 1 with gen 1, gen 2 with gen 2 and gen 3 with gen 3 only?
Thanks for that, shared!
So the 22 lost 1 point of compression vs the 21, are there any other changes?
Great video as usual. Thank you , I want the safest build for my gen 1 to make greater HP without harming engine. Ideas on the best set-up? I drive several times a week to work so looking for lower end vs higher end. EVentually want to go to drag in a couple years after retirement. I
Hey there, we recommend checking some forums or Facebook groups to get an idea for the best and safest set up. There are a lot of modifications that you can install to make the engine a lot faster.
I have a VMP Odin on my Gen 2. Drive it to work everyday. Makes 660 wheel hp and 519 ftlbs. It is awesome!
Some form of TVS, if you can find a Roush 2.3 or VMP Gen2R that’s your huckleberry.
I'm really enjoying my 21 Mach 1.
Don’t sleep on those Gen 3’s lol
How about the Gen 1 Aluminator specs? Is it the same motor in the Boss 302?
The gen 2 motor I feel like is the strongest out of both but the gen 3 is built to make good n/a power with bolt on mods
Great video, do you guy's have a Shop and if so where are you guy's located at?? I've been thinking about doing the power pack 2 but don't want to do it myself.. ???
We do not perform work on customer vehicles. We recommend finding a local & trusted performance shop to do the install.
Has the 2015 heads on the 2014s been proven? Any production dates or how to identify them?
Nice. Samw video on cobras 4.6 32v
I am a fan of the naturally-aspirated V8! These three and the C8 Z06 5.5L are all something to behold ¿`_
Agreed. I've owned both NA V8s and supercharged V8s and the NA V8 just seem more fun and manageable. High revving V8s are addictive.
What about the supercharged "Miami" variant?
Able to do a video entailing f150 coyote?
woaow how many word per seconds are these!? @ Landa
Never understood why Ford used the up-down-up-down style flat plane crankshaft in the VooDoo, vs a traditional up-down-down-up style crankshaft used in every other flat plane engines. .
Would a Gen 3 fit in my New Edge (v6) I want to do a swap on it ?
that swap have already been done so good luck
Where's all my Gen1 crank bearing brothers!? :p
No mention of Bullitt/Mach 1 variant of the Gen 3?
When you say Plasma Arc cylinder walls, does this meant the cylinders are coated Aluminum and do not have steel anymore?
Correct. The plasma arc process deposits material to the raw cylinder bores and then they're machined to tight tolerances.
2015 Ford Production of the GT350 was 137 units and 37 of them were GT350R
Yeah In the next few yrs i might have a chance of getting A 21' Must. GT with a roush super charger , all done by Brenspeed putting out 635 RWHP , but i currently have a 13' must. GT with a roush super charger , ( certified Roush test mule) Roush owned it 34 months , it now has 9,950 miles on it and has been to Brenspeed twice putting 600 rwhp and 500 rwtorque. , not sure if i should sell 13' to my son or possibly get him to buy the 21' ,
Maybe the best engine ever built. Add boost and make 750 HP safely. It’s insane !
The 2011 5.0 made 412 hp @ 6500 rpm.
I’m Gen 3 coyote 10R80 GT with a 3L Whipple with 3.75 upper pulley, long tube headers, hi glow cats and cat back, billet OPG amd CS, engine and trans oil coolers plus 170 deg thermostat running on 93 pump fuel. Only tuned to 620 wheel HP. Been running like a dream for over a year like this. In your opinion how much more HP can I go safely on this set up with the stock motor? Note, I only do 40mph -130mph roll races at a race track say 10 runs every 6 weeks and some canyon driving (no more than 5000rpm) on every second weekend.
E85 would be the next best move for more power and safety. With just ethanol and tuning you’ll gain a ton of power. Gen 3 is pretty high compression for boost so you’re most likely octane limited. There’s no magic number for how much they can handle, just suggested limits. It mainly depends how you use it and how good the tune is.
@@gforce_117 Thank you mate really appreciate your suggestion. It’s pretty nice at the moment seems happy but it’s only 620WHP but you know what it’s like “I wonder how much quicker I’ll be with another 100WHP” lol
@@CoyoteAUS 620 isn’t a lot on UA-cam, but it is in real life! I have 470 on a S197 chassis and it’s quick and a ton of fun. Definitely not the fastest, but it’s fun and that’s what it’s all about. No matter how far you push it there will be something faster. It eventually gets to a point where it’s more than you can use/put down on the street anyway. With more octane to support it, that supercharger can make a ton more power. I think you’ll still be good and reliable at 100 more hp. You have a really nice setup 👌🏻
@@gforce_117 Thank you mate.
Gen 2 Coyote Gang wya ? ‘17 s550
Gang is too ghetto to me.
What modle engine is in the 2022 f150 5.0 ?
It's the Gen 3 5.0
Im inside enemy lines… seeing if there anything I can do other doing a track hawk swap on my charger 😂🤣
I'm curious as to which is better, boss 302 heads or gen3 coyote heads.
Gen 3
@@CanIbeFrank oh hey Frank lol
Gen 3 but you have to do something about the direct injector port if you plan on gunning gen 3 heads on previous gen blocks. Also the timing chains and gears all must match - you can't mix the different gen parts.
@@177SCmaro I believe you can use a gen1 Block with gen 2 heads and gen 3 timing and cam shafts.
@@Jeff-gc2sb I believe you're correct in the case of the first two since that's how my coyote is set up but I went with gen 2 timing chains and camshafts. I didn't go gen 3 cams because they're set up to run a direct injection pump and I wasn't sure if that would play nice with my second gen heads. Plus, at the time, I don't think there were VVT phaser eliminators for gen 3 (mine is a drag car, vvt unnecessary). There isn't very much info out there about gen 3 backwards compatibility.
how might a person determine if their late production 2014 has the 2015 heads?
The 2015 cylinder head had an extended port flange because of the CMCV system. -Landan
What year did they switch to IRS? 2015?
Yes, 2015 is correct!
They had more power than Ford advertised for sure.
I currently have a 2013 GT, I want a gen 3 so bad lol
Putting a gen3 short block into my procharged 2011 right now.
There is a HP difference, but only by 40hp. I wouldn't worry about it.
Gen 3 FTW
You should do this for the hemi 6.4 and 5.7.
Hi Jonathan, our company and channel is based on Ford products only. Sorry!
Junk sorry bro
Roadrunner though 🙌
Does the current generation used in 2022 and 2023 trucks still use the plasma arc cylinder bores? I thought ford did away with that. Wasn't that thought to be a cause of excessive oil consumption?
Um, I still like my 2006 GT. It's been a good car.
300 hp baby, at the crank!! 🤓
I like the 2nd gen S197 mustang
Can u add a super charger to a 2021 mustang gt
Yes, here is a video of a 2021 Roush Supercharged Mustang GT/CS! ua-cam.com/video/h7ruruoAvCc/v-deo.html
What is millimeters
I think it's important to list the differences between the 2015-18 Gen 1 Voodoo and the 2019-20 Gen 2 Voodoo. The gt350 and the GT 350R had slightly different internals for the Gen 1 Voodoo. For the Gen 2 Voodoo the internals we're the same and the Gen 2 uses the same block as the predator motor. If you look at the used car market the 2019-20 Gt350 and gt350r are way more expensive
I thought the gen 2 started in 2018
Yup. The Gen 2 Voodoo got all the improved internals
@@jrk1990 the Gen 2 Coyote started in 2018. The Gen 2 Voodoo was only for 2019 and 2020. If you look at used prices there is a difference between the 2018 and 2019
As well the boss 302 motor is fully forged internals. And gen 3 makes 460 at 7500 not 6k
@@christiansouthard5677 I don't think the connecting rods are fully forged but the Piston heads and crank shaft is.
Dream scenario: *Ford brings back Crown Vic. (just because we want them to). 2023 Ford Croiwn Victoria 5.0 *detuned slightly to roughly 430 hp and 420 tq!!
The Voodoo engine in the 2015-2020 GT 350 put out 429 LB FT of torque,NOT 479!
You are correct! Honest miswording on my end. -Landan
This information is awesome but he’s just going a little to fast explaining these things. I’ve always been a JDM guy and now I’m really trying to learn about Mustangs. That being said this guys making my head spin with how fast he’s explaining all this 😂 I bet for a Mustang guy his speed is just fine lol
Generally, yes, this is easier for most Ford owners haha! But we do have a lot of other videos covering other components with the Coyote on our channel! Check them out to learn more! Here's another one for example: ua-cam.com/video/Vu85Sy6QH2E/v-deo.html
UA-cam channels like Alejandro Flores have a shit ton of info, and just ask questions on pages like this.
One of the happiest moments in my life when does announced the 5.0 coming back. The 4.6 I wasn’t happy with the 5.0 sounded dodd😮
How about a different take? What gen coyote is the most reliable?

I heard Gen 1
Gen2 is king daddy
They’re all reliable.
@@mikehughes8023 yeah they are all reliable i own a gen1 mt82 with 100k on e85, runs like when it was new
The 3rd gen manual felt kind of sluggish below 4500rpm. Idk 460hp sounds good but I feel like it needs to be supercharged to have the low band seem good...🤔
Could probably use some variable valve timing tuning for low end but then again these new mustangs are thiccc boys coming in at 3700lbs without a driver
Its probably that the revised mt82d4 has less agressive gearing than previous gens that hurt low end punch
@@elcochiii yeah man, that low end punch was BAD. A F150 5.0 V8 took me off the line, after 55mph I pulled hard but what the heck. Yeah the 265s are garbage, but needs more grunt downlow its really bad.
Yall need all motor labs tuning in your lifes 😐 2018 ford f150 5.0 a10 running 10s all motor

I have a 2020 f150 with the 5.0 all stock and man is it quick. I've beaten Chevys and Rams in races. Coyotes rock!
Man I got a 201 5.0 xlt my my friend gots a 20 chevy 6.2 I'm shocked it has 200mph on the dash my ford only has 120mph I know they both have governors on them but damn 200mph on the dash
@@keitgwilliams4349 My truck only goes up to 105 mph and will not go past 105, that's the only thing that sucks about it.
I think my truck went 106mph I was going down a open hill in south Dakota on interstate 90 and it wouldn't go any faster
Damn no Miami
Ford needs to shelve that 5.0 and up their game with a modern all aluminium 351 Cleveland or an all aluminium 429 CJ
Gen 4 comparison?
It's on the list! -Landan
