There's been some evidence that the act of putting your hands in tank can affect calcification. Something about the chemistry of the oils in our skin, will cause your corals to stop taking up calcium and alk.
Sorry. That should have read anecdotal evidence. I will try to find the discussion and post a link here for the benefit of all. The gist of it was though that after having hands in the tank there was a noticeable interruption in the tanks consumption of Ca and Alk for about a day afterwards. Again anecdotal but worth considering.
Never heard of that but personally I wash my hands before maintaining the system, so maybe any oil on my skin is washed off. That's an interesting point though, it very well could be.
It would probably be easier proving that the chemical you used to wash your hands prior to placing them into the tank has more of an affect to your system than the natural oil on your skin. There are just way too many variables to assert something like the oil on your skin could affect calcification or a systems chemistry, things like tank volume, the individuals skin variables etc. I imagine it would be like blaming your car pulling to the right on the idea that maybe there's slightly more dust on the right side of the car than the left lol.
Sorry to put Brian on the spot here, I also remember reading somewhere from someone reputable that their tank's Alk consumption clearly stopped after he worked with the tank one day (vague, I know). Although he did not say exactly why. I was trying to find that link / post but I could not... will try again later. I came across this when I was researching how to set up proper dosing.
Welcome back Mok and you really looked like you guys were having a great time with the Facebook posts. The tank looks awesome and the growth id's insane. Your truely a nem whisperer.
Your tank is gorgeous ! I am going to be sending you a picture of both of my tanks the corals that I have in the 75 gal tank is doing very well ! The 20 gal hex seahorse reef is doing very well two ! I will be sent them very soon ! Great video I love each and everyone you do ! you friend Mike .
I'm with u on that one, I havnt put my hand in my tank for over 2 months and it has never looked better 👌 I thing that new light will look pretty good over the 45g and I can't wait to see the videos you done in Hong Kong
Tank looks great! I'm new to the reef tank world (Fluval EVO 13.5 gal.) that is almost done cycling. I'm local to you, so I watch for guidance of local resources (buy/trade, etc). Great videos - thanks / Dave
Thank you for watching Dave; there is actually a WAMAS reef club meeting tomorrow in Bethesda, may be worth checking out: wamas.org/forums/topic/83123-saturday-october-21-fall-2017-meeting-matt-pedersen-on-clownfish/#entry726129
I've noticed the same thing when I keep my hands out of the tank. But I've also noticed that change to my lights affects my coral growth negatively also. Doesn't seem like it's been bothering yours too much
when are you planing on getting a 120 gallon tank you really need a larger tank. is it possible to fit it in the same spot on the same wall and just shift things down a bit? and maybe increasing your water change schedule since you don't address so many other things it may be the balance you need to stay on top of your diatom blooms and other algae outbreaks
I think two other factors are the very dirty sump and my RO/DI unit has been running at 1 PPM for awhile now... I was having trouble twisting off the DI canister so I had been procrastinating. Will get that done this weekend!
Have you tried using vibrant for the diatoms? I hear it works very well. I actually ordered some for my tank because I'm having a diatom problem as well. I'm a little nervous to use it because my corals are very happy currently. 😩
new to the nano reefs, was looking for some help and guidance. I have the fluval Evo 12G tank. The tank is established with coral and just wondering what you feed your coral. I was told to give them cyclops, also wondering how often you have the lights on. Im growing a lot of green hair algae.
Hey David, it really depends on what type of corals you are keeping; for my tank I feed the LPS and paly with larger mouth either LRS or Rod's frozen food, usually the meatier bits. I would also do frozen PE Mysis once in awhile although I prefer larger pieces for my LPS. I would turn off the pump and gently blast my zoas with a mix of cyclops, Reef Roid, Reef Chili, Coral Frenzy every once in awhile... to be honest I have not seen much reaction, but I figure the more variety of food the better. Currently I am running around 6 hours light schedule as I am experiencing some diatom of my sand bed, things are a bit unbalance in the 45g at the moment. As for your green hair algae issue, there are many ways to skin this cat, the easiest may be decreasing photo period, feed less, and do weekly water change to export nutrient (be sure to use RO/DI water). Next step may be trying a little GFO if you can fit a media basket or filter in the back area. Good luck!
thank u how much did it cost u ?I have fluval m60 will that light fit over it ? nice set up dude my light is not given the right coloures on my corals so I'm upgrading my light system
Awesome surprise footage ending. :) A nice location for the BTA would be to move it to the bottom of the drop off of 17G tank. I not sure that would be practical with Mochi in there, though. My vote is don't get rid of the Gorgonian completely. I think it's nice in there and something that not everyone has. Gives character to the tank. I could say a lot more but I think the bottom line is you need a bigger tank, like has already been mentioned in the comments below. Sounds like your trip went well. Show some more footage from HK!!!
Nice tank I have a 24 jbj the tanks been setup over 10 years never dose anything but I just have LPS I’ve always had to frag my frogspawn it grew like mad no it’s slowed down and the stalks have withered and some heads broke off??? Low calcium? It’s very strange
What a stunning tank don't sell anything or take stuff out and don't move it . remember if it's not broken don't fix it exerllant comentating 😷😁😁👍👍👍👍🐟🐟🇬🇧
Its great the see the 24K gold is getting back its color. Love the Monti cap makes the tank look like a proper reef. The red mushroom just pops. Seems not sticking your hand in the tank works. Or its the skills of #Missaveragereefer haha. Anyway looks very nice can't wait for more videos in the week !
Hi I have a few questions I just recently set up a reef tank, reefer 170, I wanted your opinion on should I do water changes or should I dose when I keep coral
That I am not positive about since I have not tested my phosphate level in a long time, so it's hard to say if the tank has detectable phosphate or if those were soaked up by other bad algae. I think not putting hands into the tank and stability were the key for sure. Chaeto I am not sure.
I find unless you feed a ton of food to keep their weight up and have enough tank space, the chromis tend to form a hierarchy and pick off the smallest of the school until it starves to death. I used to have and small school of 10 and over the years they died one by one and now I'm at 3.
It’s weird, I never used to hesitate to put my hands into the water but then I got a bit concerned, don’t really know why. So I bought some shoulder-length disposable poly gloves and now if I need to do anything in the tank - even just reach in with long tweezers to reposition a coral - I always put one of the gloves on. If I need to do detail work like gluing corals, I put a nitrile exam glove over top because the poly gloves don’t fit well in the hand area - they’re more just a barrier. Point is, I can’t bring myself to put my bare hands in any more. I’m worried about what I might transmit, especially with dogs and cats around and after handling them. I figure when it comes to a reef tank, it can’t hurt to be more careful even if it isn’t completely necessary. And I’m also a fan of a lush, wall-to-wall coverage look in a reef tank. I love when things grow well and fill in. Interesting video!
+Reefgrrl I was looking for shoulder length gloves and only came across what looks like purple dish washing gloves and it looks quite bulky so I did not get it. Putting the exam gloves over poly gloves for the hands is genius. 👍👍👍 you are right, can never be too careful!
Here are the ones I bought: amzn.to/2h7dpp7. If I’m working for a longer time with them on, I put a rubber band at the top of my arm to keep them in place. I learned that they can leak at the seam if they are pulled out of the box on an angle, so I’m careful to pull them slowly, straight out. I’ve not had any leak since I figured that out. The exam glove over top was in a review and it is a great idea. I also put a rubber band around my wrist when I use the extra glove, so it gets less water in it. Less water everywhere that way! 😬
I don't spot feed the pair when I feed the fish (every night), the goby dashes out and compete for food. When I feed the corals (once or twice a week), I do squirt a bit towards the cave for the shrimp. I need to remember to make a feeding video, great idea (again)!
I think your real issue here is that you need a bigger tank lol. The hands in the tank thing IMO is a misrepresentation of what you actually mean, Changing things all the time is more accurate. I have my hands in my tank all the time but not really changing anything and the changing/disturbing aspect is what potentially could be a negative. Changing your light fixtures frequently is much more likely to cause your tank an issue than putting your hands in your tank.
Like your videos man, but you have too many fish in this puddle... They look hectic and have hardly any space to swing. Clowns chasing the chromis around all day. You can't be happy with that and neither are the fish :( (even if they calm down when you step away from the tank)
I definitely hear you, I'm holding out to see if I could upgrade the tank in a reasonable amount of time... the Chromis aren't getting any smaller. Stay tuned!

Great video and all looking good.
Do you have a link to both the lights you are using?
Watching your video on your Corals, they are so beautiful it's like looking at a fantasy world. Itis so peaceful to watch so relaxing
Welcome back Mok and you really looked like you guys were having a great time with the Facebook posts. The tank looks awesome and the growth id's insane. Your truely a nem whisperer.
colour looks awesome with the radion and the UFO set-up!

Just checked a few of your vids, loved the quality and content! Keep it up. I hope you will get a bigger tank soon.
Thank you for your kind words!

Thanks! Probably can't make tomorrow's, but I should look into future ones. (I'm in Fairfax Co, VA, BTW.)
Did you get those pictures of the 20 gal hex Reef ? thanks for your time you're friend always Michael !
I buy that gold torch bro and that Fuji leather is super nice would you consider that Fuji leather good for a beginner
Looking good. Time to upgrade your tank. Goes big it better down the road.
I've noticed the same thing when I keep my hands out of the tank. But I've also noticed that change to my lights affects my coral growth negatively also. Doesn't seem like it's been bothering yours too much
Tapped the bell for notifications. Now i got something to watch sunday mornings
Thanks for the awesome videos

Stability is key 🔑 to this hobby! If you sell it atleast keep a frag for yourself
But what about rubber gloves? Like the big pink ones you'd see for scrubing and such.
Have you tried using vibrant for the diatoms? I hear it works very well. I actually ordered some for my tank because I'm having a diatom problem as well. I'm a little nervous to use it because my corals are very happy currently. 😩
Is chromis and clownfish a good idea? Looks a lot of chasing? Thinking of getting couple for my tank
What’s the orange and green coral at 7:31
Don’t get rid of the gorgonian just get rid of some lol frag it then you can still enjoy it and so can others lol loving the tank

Is that dinoflagellates in the sand bed?
thank u how much did it cost u ?I have fluval m60 will that light fit over it ?

HK footage coming tomorrow! Still need to work on the Philippines ones, lol!
do you vacuum your substrate? how deep is the substrate?
How is the large tank going?
Hey, great tank! what wave maker is that you have above your frag rack?
Thanks
Nice tank I have a 24 jbj the tanks been setup over 10 years never dose anything but I just have LPS I’ve always had to frag my frogspawn it grew like mad no it’s slowed down and the stalks have withered and some heads broke off???
Low calcium? It’s very strange
would love to see the swivel LED review!
it would be really cool if someone could do a swivel mount for all the popular LEDs out there!
Lawrence, that's actually a great idea...
I’m just curious as to what your normal maintenance routine is
Usually water change every two weeks or so; I do siphon the surface of the sand when I do water change.
What a stunning tank don't sell anything or take stuff out and don't move it . remember if it's not broken don't fix it exerllant comentating 😷😁😁👍👍👍👍🐟🐟🇬🇧
4:25 what kind coral is that

Looks beautiful !!!
Size of the tank?
Beautiful tank and cool videos!
Thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Beautiful reef ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and when you start fragging let me know I’m interested in them all
i have reef brites blue and white blues are up whites minimal...is that ok
Can i know the dimension of the tank ? thx
What % did you run the radion before you added the UFO? The reef looks good as is......leave it 😁
I THINK it was around 70% brightness?
Beautiful tank !!!
Thanks Kerry!
How many fish are in your 45?? I’m setting up a new 40 and was wondering how many I can put in there.
Let's see, 2 clowns, 8 green chromis, 1 yasha, 1 bi-color blenny. Even though most of them are small fish it is a bit over-stocked.
Hi I have a few questions I just recently set up a reef tank, reefer 170, I wanted your opinion on should I do water changes or should I dose when I keep coral
Nice video as always. Looking forward to see what do next. 👍👍
I have a question.
How did you get the monti to grow like it’s shelving ?
What products do you use to do your water testing? @inappropriatereefer
You really need a bigger tank
Do you think your tank is growing better now because you aren't using chaeto anymore in addition to not putting your hands in the tank?
That I am not positive about since I have not tested my phosphate level in a long time, so it's hard to say if the tank has detectable phosphate or if those were soaked up by other bad algae. I think not putting hands into the tank and stability were the key for sure. Chaeto I am not sure.

Very nice tank
YAY! Bonus Video!!!!
YES! Two videos a week. =D
what is the flat coral you have in your tank
+Chaos_Sniper 5436 probably the Montipora Capricornis!
You should try moving the Xenia coral higher towards the light and it will be a lot happier
how much for the gold \ green torch?
have u changed your light system whats it called
?
I have a Radion g3 with aquaticlife t5 fixture over this tank 👍
can you list the name of all coral please
Not sure if serious or...
Hey man what’s your dosing routine?
+Karan Sidhu I have it set up to dose 4x 6ml a day, using BRS 2 parts
It’s weird, I never used to hesitate to put my hands into the water but then I got a bit concerned, don’t really know why. Wow..... so beautiful!!
holy cow. dude, what do you do for a living?!
Looking great
Have you tried to measure PAR of those UFO lights?
Yep, here it is at the spectrum that I actually use (not max power): ua-cam.com/video/JO83bfXQblM/v-deo.htmlm56s
Inappropriate Reefer awesome!
Bring that gold hammer out into the front, its a show piece man!
That's the plan!
Looking good
What if the coral grows too fast?
- Chuan
There's an easy fix to all your problems... A bigger tank lol
Your Hong Kong accent is very distinct.
Happy to see your tank but you need bigger one.
Great video like always keep up the great work 😁👍🐟
Where is the clam?
The clam passed away around last month, I just realized I shared it on Instagram but never mentioned it on UA-cam, doh. =/
Feels bad man
Greetings from Germany
Next time you make a video can you include feeding your fish. Do you spot feed your shrimp and goby?
I don't spot feed the pair when I feed the fish (every night), the goby dashes out and compete for food. When I feed the corals (once or twice a week), I do squirt a bit towards the cave for the shrimp. I need to remember to make a feeding video, great idea (again)!
Those damsels are going to fight to death lol
How have you managed to keep those chromis alive without them killing each other
I think key for me was feeding often (2x+ a day) and having a pair of aggressive clowns that keep the Chromis on their toes
New sub :) Fantastic looking Tank.
I think your real issue here is that you need a bigger tank lol. The hands in the tank thing IMO is a misrepresentation of what you actually mean, Changing things all the time is more accurate. Looks like you might have some dino popping back up.
I am afraid of the same thing.. but we beat it once, we could do it again!
Up grade time !!!! Bigger tank!!!!! Do it!!!!
Ohh you twist my arm...
Leave the hammers alone since everything is happy.. looks great
Yeah 2 vids a week !!!! And dint sell the gorgonian plss
Almost at 10K subs!!!!!!!
not easy for some people to keep hands off
Please get a bigger tank!
nice tank i subbed...

I definitely hear you, I'm holding out to see if I could upgrade the tank in a reasonable amount of time... the Chromis aren't getting any smaller. Stay tuned!
i agree too many chromies for this
BOKEH LAO!
need your advice lol
My chromis jumped out...
Bro change the topic in to ‘after my pilipin trip 😐
Hopefully you are planning a tank upgrade soon, as your tank is way overcrowded. I feel bad for the animals all crammed in there together, as well as for your 11 thousand followers who are watching your poor husbandry practices and thinking this is okay! These animals are at the mercy of their owner, and although they may appear to be growing, they are certainly not thriving. Countless euphyllia corals + monti cap in a 45 gallon tank with that many fish = a recipe for disaster. Have you ever heard of sweeper tentacles?! Planning and researching these animals before throwing them all together in a tiny glass box would have been the right thing to do. Don't even get me started on that poor Ritteri. On a positive note, your clowns are awesome!
Hey man, fair points and I appreciate you spending the time to write this out instead of going, "u sux!" I need honest opinions like this to keep me honest and growing as a hobbyist.
