Drivetrain Upgrade: 7-Speed To 10-Speed

- Replacing the drivetrain of this hybrid bike, 1994 Trek 720 Multitrack, from 7-speed to 10-speed. The upgrade has made this old bike more enjoyable to ride.
The groupset features SRAM Red 11-26t Cassette, SRAM X7 shifters, SRAM X7 front derailleur and SRAM Force 22 rear derailleur.
Spacer is not needed for 10-speed cassette.

The X7 rear derailleur couldn’t shift to the biggest cog because it is a 9-speed derailleur and it's not compatible to the 10-speed drivetrain.
So what I installed is a SRAM Force 22, I like this one better because it’s lighter and shifts smoothly. it features exact actuation that delivers 3mm shifts in every gear.

Ah, a Trek 720 from the 80’s -90’S, an excellent bike. I’ve had two and my ex still has hers. I’ve used it for touring, and it would make a good gravel grinder.
Another great modification to give second life for this old bike!
Good decision. I just bought the same cheap Shimano 3x Shifters like the ones you took off the bike, and they are best stored in the trash bin. SRAM X7 on the other hand is really nice.

Watching your back wheel spin, there's a wobble in the rear sprockets, most likely a bent axle or bearings issue, could be a major problem in the long term
Good catch! Yes, there’s an issue with the hub and will fix it up in the coming weeks. I’ll post a video to let you guys know.
Love the bike I’m in the process of building one my self what size tire are you running and what hub are you using?
The tires are 700C x 28 and the hub is Bontrager SSR (10 speed freehub).

Thanks, the weight of the bike is 23 lbs. (It was 27 lbs before the drivetrain and wheels upgrades)

So X7 rear Derailleur is not not suitable for 10 speed cassette and 10 speed X7 shifter?
This X7 rear derailleur is only for 9 speed drivetrain, but they also have a 10 speed version, so make sure to verify that because making a purchase.

@@DanyoSports It must be something on my end. If I watch on my phone it's OK. I use Chromecast to watch UA-cam videos on my TV. All other videos are OK but this one the audio keeps skipping and popping. On my phone with no Chromecast it's fine..... very strange?
Try to update the firmware of your Chromecast and see if that solves the problem.
What was the ballpark cost around to do upgrade? Want to convert 2018 Trek FX to 10 speed
It cost me around $200 for this 10-speed groupset.

No, it’s a 2x10 setup.
so do all 8 speed hubs take 10 speed ?
Yes, 8-speed hubs take 8, 9 and 10 speeds cassette.
@@DanyoSports thank you, I got some bad advise from halfords staff then. They said my wheel couldn't take a ten speed. Something about it being a 7 speed not sure why. They seem like they don't really know what they're talking about.
If your wheel or hub is 7-speed, you couldn’t fit 8 to10-speed cassettes.
I should be clear, my wheel is 8-speed and I can put 7-speed cassette with a spacer or 8 to 10-speed without spacer.
@@DanyoSports I see so I guess the only way for me is to measure my hub ?. Then I can tell if the ten will fit.
