As an American who got into football a few years ago, it's always fun seeing fellow Americans discover the sport for the first time, especially if they do it through Messi, who imo is the greatest of all time. I'll try to answer a few questions you had/might have had.
    1. You were correct in your statements about the Ballon d'Or trophy. To start, every country does have its own professional soccer league, and in most if not all cases there are several levels under that league, similar to how baseball has the minor leagues, but different in a variety of ways. The teams obviously play within their own leagues, but each continent has an organization (in Europe, it's UEFA) that organizes a cup tournament for the best teams in the continent to play against each other, so while Messi plays for Barcelona in Spain, he will occasionally play against German, Italian, English, French, etc. teams. This isn't too relevant to this video, but it is good to note that the top five soccer leagues are all in Europe - Spain, England, Germany, Italy, and France, and so this means that Messi is usually playing against the best of the best. Back to the Ballon d'Or, it's a trophy given to the best footballer in the world as determined mostly by journalists, with some players and coaches having votes as well. Naturally, the trophy almost always goes to a footballer playing in Europe. Messi has won this award the most out of any player in history, having won his sixth last year (Cristiano Ronaldo comes second, with five to his name). (bonus: between Ronaldo and Messi, they have won eleven of the last twelve Ballon d'Ors.)
    2. Messi is pretty short, yes. He stands at 5'7" and he's only even that tall because he had growth hormones injected into his legs daily for a few years as a child after being diagnosed with a hormone deficiency. This helps with his dribbling, pace, and acceleration though, as he has a very low center of gravity and this makes it very difficult to dispossess him of the ball, as you can see in this video XD
    3. The exact intricacies of the offside rule will make my head spin, so to sum up what you really need to know about it: The attacking players can't be beyond the last defensive player when a pass is played to them. It's something like the back foot of the furthest back defender (excluding the goalie, unless for some reason he is in front of a defensive player) marks a line that traverses the width of the field, and if an attacking player is judged to be behind that line (as in, if even one of his feet is over that line) at the moment the ball leaves a teammate's foot, he's offside. Other situations that see the offside rule change: when the ball is being thrown in from the sidelines or out for a corner kick, you can't be offside. When there is only one defender (usually the goalkeeper) in front of the attack, offside is determined by the attacking player with the ball - that is, in a 2 or 3-on-1 situation, for example, the player with the ball is the mark at which the offside line will be drawn, so their teammate(s) cannot run beyond them and receive a pass, or else they will be considered offside as well. Also, you cannot be offside within your own half of the pitch (the half of the field your team is defending); if the defenders push too far into your own half, a player who hangs out behind them but inside the halfway line will not be judged offside. Possibly the most important thing to remember when thinking about offside is the position of the player the ball was passed to AT THE MOMENT THE PASS WAS MADE. If you see someone running in free space after a ball and wondering how they got so open, it might be that they were juuuust onside right when the pass was played and made an excellently timed run, but the defenders thought he was offside and so they won't be bothered to chase after him. Alternatively, if you see a pass made to someone who just lets the ball go by, it's probably because they know they were offside when the pass was made anyway. It's confusing, but the more you watch, the more it makes sense.
    4. Out of bounds isn't like other American sports. You can step over the boundaries in soccer as much as you like - you can even touch the ball if you are not inside the boundaries of the field. The only thing that can go "out of bounds" per se is the ball itself, and even that's far more relaxed than in other sports. In soccer, the whole of the ball has to cross the touchline in order for a play to be halted for out of bounds; this can lead to some pretty crazy situations, like a game in the UEFA Champions League last year between Ajax (a Dutch team) and Real Madrid (Spanish), where from some angles the ball looked like it was entirely over the line but from others it did not.
    5. Since each country has its own league but teams also often play against other international clubs, the pandemic has certainly changed the global soccer season. Most European leagues run from the same time, August to May, but obviously they had to be halted for a time, and the returns have been dictated by how the virus is going in each country and what the governments and footballing associations of each country believe is best. For example, the French and Dutch leagues have both been canceled, but in the French league the leading team was crowned champion, while in the Dutch league no champion was crowned. Meanwhile, the German league actually started playing last week again, and the Spanish league has set a return date for June 12. England, as far as I'm aware, is trying to return pretty soon as well, as is Italy, but I don't know if any dates have been set. The aftermath of the virus is going to be quite messy for football as a whole: many small clubs who haven't received any profit in months will certainly be on the brink of financial ruin, most contracts are designated to run out on certain dates as opposed to "at the end of the season," which means that players might leave their teams before the season is actually complete, and the list just goes on and on.
Anyway, I've done quite a lot of rambling, so I'll stop here with a few suggestions. If you want a succinct explanation of the rules of soccer, I would recommend "The Rules of Football (Soccer or Association Football) - EXPLAINED!" by Ninh Ly. If you want to understand how soccer leagues in Europe function, I would recommend "Understanding European Soccer in Four Simple Steps: A Guide for Americans," by Pen and Paper.
If you're looking for player videos to check out, I would highly recommend "Lionel Messi - A God Amongst Men HD," by JavierNathaniel; it's a few years old, quite long, and again a video about Messi, but I think it's a really incredible video. Aside from Messi, I would recommend checking out Cristiano Ronaldo to understand why he and Messi are so often compared and debated (personally, I think Messi is better...). I'd also recommend "Ronaldinho - Football's Greatest Entertainment," again by JavierNathaniel; he's the player that wore the #10 jersey at Barcelona before Messi did, and honestly, the video's title is pretty accurate - his peak was short but very bright, and he played the game in a way unlike anyone before him.

Exceptionally well explained. As a long time football fan from Europe, I have some questions. What's your favorite team?
How is the viewing experience given that you're from the US (the difference in time zone).
Would you say that soccer has been growing in the states lately?
What's your favorite thing about this sport.?

@@zinedinhadzajlija6225 Thanks! Favorite team is Barcelona, I first discovered soccer as a kid through watching Messi highlights in like 2011, and while I didn't really get into the sport until years later, they're the team I've known the oldest and try to watch the most, and when they're at their best I love the teamwork on display. I also love Leicester City, the whole 2015/16 Cinderella story is fantastic and it's great fun supporting a team that's not dominating football by any stretch but is still doing well, especially this season.
I usually try to catch streams of whatever games I want to watch. It's a bit challenging because of time zones and that I'm in college, so it usually means I'm in class for most Champions League/cup games, and at work for Sunday games; but if I have the energy and time, I'll get up for games that start at 9 am for me, both to enjoy the game and to actually start my day. Also, if it's a Champions League game I really want to watch, I can skip class, although I try not to make a habit of that.
Soccer in the states... it's kinda difficult to get a read on, sometimes. It always has an uptick in growth whenever the World Cup swings around, albeit the 2018 one didn't do it as much because of the U.S. failing to qualify. I felt like support was growing though, up until fairly recently; maybe I've just stopped paying as much attention, but I don't feel as though people are as aware, even with the creation of new clubs in the MLS. Obviously, this could be in large part due to the pandemic, and I might be thinking a little more negatively because of recent USSF drama, but still, I think it's plateaued a little bit recently.
To be honest, I'm not sure what my favorite thing about the sport is. I think I just love how unique it is compared to all the other major sports in the U.S., particularly playing with the ball at the feet. I know athletes of all sports are incredibly skilled at what they do, but for me, soccer players are on another level.

    Goalie didn't make a mistake.
Goalkeepers come closer to the player because it will allow players a short room to shoot. Closer the goalie is to you, the harder it is to score.

    • @shakykeys6578
      @shakykeys6578 4 роки тому +3

Not entirely true...goalkeepers come out to cut down on the number of potential angles a shot can take. Closing down completely on top of the shooter limits them to chips or horizontal passes, that's the idea. So yeah, 'close down, get big' is the basic answer.
In this case though, you could the keeper was reckless coming out. He left too much space to Messi's left side, not accounting for his speed, and Messi was able to turn the compass, if you will.
Takes nothing away from the goal or the goalkeeper. Just goes to show what a nightmare it is to gameplan for everything that Messi brings to the table.

U guys must understand that carrying the ball and move as fast as u can and also think in your next movement to cheat your rivals, its very very very difficult, also you must think in pass the ball efficienttly that had a lot of difficulties bc u have to push your body at the limit. sometimes al little imbalance help or not to dribling a better rival that you. hit the ball in a good way takes a lot of time to learn, sometimes special pass or receive a ball, makes jump your brain bc it had to take alot of calculations literally in a blink. Sometimes you must hit the ball as a golf stick, or as a tenist player, othertimes you hit it with a dry and strong hit, sometimes you must guide it to change the trajectory, it has a many positions of your foot, but in fullspeed, you can see the best players move in slowmo and find that they move so efficiently that make others impossible to reach them. Messi is no human, he is better that the better player in all times. sorry for my english is not as good a like it

3:57 when the player who gets fouled continues with the ball (or a teammate), the ref gives the advantage to the team so they can keep the play going. If you look at the ref, he makes a hand signal where he streches both hands out, right after they foul Messi, so he gets the advantage to keep going.

  • @valebelenmancini

Just to answer some of your questions:
I don't know if I can explain how offside works, but basically if when one of your teammates passes you the ball (the exact moment they hit it) you don´t have any opponents at the same line or in front of you, you are offside and it´s free kick to the other team; if you score after an offside, the ref calls for no goal. On the other hand, if an oponnet touches the ball before you recieve it and you were offside, the rule doesn´t apply.
As long as the ball stays inside the lines, there´s no problem; the players can go beyond the lines keeping the ball in.
The season was cancelled, some leagues decided there will be no winner, some others made the team that was at the top the winners and most are espected to continue at some point. Football in Germany came back last weekend.

Nice Raction. Messi's "rookie" year was 2006 for his club. He's always been amazing but since 2009 he could be considered the best player in the world. Just like it's hard for me to understand how basketball players are so amazing bc I haven't played it, you need to play football to understand how hard is what Messi does and he makes it look so simple. To run at full speed with the ball controlled and leave 3,4 players behind is something most players can't do. Also his numbers are freaking insane. In his best season he scored 73 goals. Before Messi and Ronaldo, a good season could be a 20-25 goals season. Messi scored 73 which is like...idk if michael jordan scored 120 points in a basketball game. It's something hard to understand. But at the same time he's also the best passer the game has and the player with the most assists. He can create and finish plays and he's the best at both which is something never seen before. To me he's the best Ever.

In soccer every country has it's own league (besides the US who plays with Canada). Most of them have a relegation system where the best teams of the next lowest league are relegated to the next higher league inside their country (Germany has 12 leagues e.g.). That allowes even small cities or villages to play in the highest league sometimes. In Germany we have Hoffenheim (5000 inhabitants) in our first league who play against teams from metropoles like Berlin or Munich.

Offside rule can be a little confusing but i'll try to explain. There is an imaginary line which position is marked on the second closest opponent to his own goal (usually the closest is the goalkeeper so the one who mark that line is the closest defender). When you receive a pass, you are offside if the teammate who makes the pass hits the ball after the receiver has crossed thah imaginary line.

You might know this by now, but the offside rule is pretty easy. The moment the ball is touched to pass it, the receiver should have at least 2 defenders of the opposite team behind him. Not the moment he receives it, but the moment the pass to him is touched. There has to be at least two of the opponent players behind him. That includes the goal keeper. If it is only one player or zero player, he's offside.

Example of what an offside is: Barca is playing against Real Madrid. Jordi Alba (he is a defender who Barca uses as someone to assist passing balls to the strikers for them to goal) and Messi(striker) are team-mates (for Barca) and Sergio Ramos and Marcelo are teammates for Real Madrid they are both defenders. Say Jordi passes a ball to Messi but Messi was in front of the defenders, when he received the ball, to shoot for goal then that is called offside. Basically whenever a player of the opposite team gets a ball in front of the defenders to shoot for goal then that is called offside. THEY MUST ALWAYS RECEIVE THE BALL BEHIND THE DEFENDERS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO SCORE A GOAL. That was a very long explanation but I hope it helped you to understand what an offside position is if not then just google it or search it on youtube.

You are offside if you obstruct the play(Touch the ball or get in the way of a defender) after the ball was played by your team mate WHILE "YOU" WERE BEHIND(from the point of view of the defender)THE LAST OPPOSITE TEAM DEFENDER..Its not a offside if your team mate passed you the ball while he himself was behind the last defender..Its not a foul if you are simply in an offside position and DO NOT obstruct the play..Hope this helps lol

    Okay so offside.
Right where you paused and asked the question, take a look at where messi is with the ball and look at the defense he’s facing (yellow wearing defenders) - messi in that position is not allowed to pass the ball to any of his teammates if they are behind those 4 yellow defenders. However in this case he can pass it to anyone in his team, aslong as they arent behind the opposite teams last man (goalie does count). Hope this helped understand offside somewhat
    Ps: awesome reaction

sports of all kind is stopped world wide. Football is no different. Some leagues are suspended with an eye to return and continue. Some are terminated for this season. There is a whole lot of discussion going on about how to move forward by individual leagues as well as collectively. The EURO 2020 and the Olympics 2020 are postponed to 2021.
    Edit: oh btw, nice reaction.

Offside = when you pass the ball, your teammate needs to be before or on the same line of a opponent player, if he's beyond it, then that's a offside.

    Super basic description of offsides:
The attacking team can’t pass to one of their own players who is standing past the last defensive player on the opposing team’s side. What’s weird is an offensive player can receive the ball in in an offsides position, but they would’ve had to start their run at the goal from an onsides position at the moment the ball was kicked to them. The sideline referees always stand equal with the last defender closest to the goalie. This is so that they can better see if any offensive players are standing on an offsides position when a pass is made to them.
