    Nice build. I just wanted to ask if it works with smaller amps(20 watts) because in my testing it does not work with amp(20watts), but works with a greater output of minimum 50w, maybe the reference voltage is too low or something else...

    Hi I bought a vu meter based on LM 3915 N-1 ic to add up in my subwoofer power amplifier however when connecting it to output of the amp subwoofer starts humming. Plz suggest how to connect vu meter with my homemade subwoofer power amplifier.

    Very nice project, love this so much I placed an order with JLCPCB with your Gerber files for 20 boards then designed a case useing open scad for a duel and a single channel display. Wish I could upload photos and the stl files here. I got the case with 2 alternative front display panels and 2 alternative back panels with cutouts for all input components. I used a 50k ohm potentiometer to adjust the input levels in the final project. Guess ill have to post a video and files on my youtube channel and provide a link here.

    Can this VU meter be connected to line level signals and not the output of an amplifier? I want to add a VU meter to a Mixer board to monitor the output of a microphone before it is sent to the main output channel of the mixer board.

    This wiring method only works for the LM3914 as it is a linear. The LM3915 has a logarithmic scale. The resistance value between the comparitors, are not equal. Watch carefully and you can see each bank of 10 LEDs is quicker to change at the bottom than towards the top. That and a VU meter slows down as it reaches the peak. Due to the logarithmic scale. Yes it works and looks good, but it is not an accurate VU meter.

  • @loicmentha4224
    @loicmentha4224 4 роки тому +2

    Sorry for that stupid question, just read the lm 3915 datasheet :) . So as the pin 9 is connected all the way to pin 3 on the pcb, the only solution to isolate the pin 9 and have a dot mode on that pcb is to unfold the pin 9, and instead of soldering it on the pcb, to connect it to a switch, right?

    • @Stefano91ste
      @Stefano91ste  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, what you say would work only with an LM3915, for the DOT mode of more LM3915 in cascade the situation becomes more complex. This is because when you have more LM3915 in cascade activating the DOT mode the last LED of each LM3915 stays on and you have to find a way to turn it off.
      In the past I made a vu meter with 20 LEDs and the working DOT mode, this is the video ( ua-cam.com/video/KWLLHiExLc8/v-deo.html ) in the diagram we see the solution I adopted, but I never applied it on big vu-meters for now.
      The solution is the two resistances: 1K near PIN 11 of the first LM3915 and 330 ohm near PIN 1 of the second LM3915 - NB, Drawing that diagram I made a small mistake: the 1K resistor on LED 9 must be connected to the cathode (not anode)

      @@Stefano91ste OK thanks a lot for all these informations :) . But I can see on this diagram u used one 120ohm resistor per led, is it absolutely necessary ?

    • @Stefano91ste
      @Stefano91ste  4 роки тому

      Hi, they are not mandatory, the LM3915 have an internal resistance.. I put them to further limit the power consumption.

    Ciao Stefano
    avrei bisogno di un tuo parere ..ovvero ho appena completato il progetto dei vu meter 40 Led e funziona perfettamente pero' mi chiedevo se c'era il modo di "rallentare"
    lo spegnimento dei led ? in breve rendere piu' fluida la progressione di accensione/spegnimento della barra.Ho confrontato il funzionamento con il video demo per controllare
    che non abbia fatto io degli errori di assemblaggio ma e' perfettamente identico. Ammesso che si possa hai qualche suggerimento da darmi ?
    GRAZIE CIAO

    • @Stefano91ste
      @Stefano91ste  4 роки тому

      Ciao Enrico,
      Per rendere lo spegnimento dei LED più fluido si potrebbe sostituire il condensatore elettrolitico da 1uf con uno da 2.2uF, mentre per l'accensione è un po più complicato, perchè gli LM3915 hanno un range massimo di 90dB da suddividere su 30 LED, ed avendo ingrandito il vu-meter purtroppo non si raggiunge il range dei 120 dB, ma rimane quello da 90dB spalmato su 40 LED. Una soluzione possibile sarebbe quella di far pilotare i 4 LM3915 da un microprocessore anziché collegarli direttamente alla fonte audio.

      Il circuito stampato l’ho disegnato io, è un PCB a due strati (layer) - in descrizione video trovi il link per scaricare i file gerber del pcb, così puoi farlo realizzare da qualsiasi produttore di PCB, io ovviamente ti posso consigliare JLCPCB :) - scegli il colore che vuoi tu per la board, e puoi modificare a tuo piacimento parametri come spessore del pcb e rifiniture. I componenti invece li prendi tu dove preferisci tipo negozi, fiere (quando riprenderanno) oppure online.

      This is strange, with various tests I did on the vu meters, I found this problem in two cases:
      1) the audio source has a signal with noise (But if replacing the resistor as I wrote in the description, everything works fine)
      2) disturbances are present in the power supply.
      Have you tried to power the circuit with a 9V battery?

      è molto semplice ordinare questi PCB:
      1) scarica i file del pcb, di questo video, da questo link: bit.ly/2Z1Uj84 (lo trovi anche in descrizione video).
      2) dovresti registrarti su jlcpcb.com una volta creato il tuo account devi fare l'ordine dei PCB.
      3) Per fare l'ordine vai su jlcpcb.com poi premi sul pulsante azzurro "QUOTE NOW" e poi sul pulsante blu "Add your gerber now" e carica il file che ti ho fatto scaricare prima.
      4) Scegli colore del pcb che preferisci e completa l'ordine.
      Puoi seguire tutta la procedura per ordinare i PCB nel video da 1:20

      Hi, You are wrong.. the LM3915 connected in cascade increase their range in dB up to a maximum of 90 dB. it is written on the first page of the datasheet. Please read it!
      FROM DATASHEET:
      "Multiple devices can be cascaded for a dot or bar mode display with a range of 60 or 90 dB. LM3915s can also be cascaded with LM3914s for a linear/log display or with LM3916s for an extended-range VU meter"
