I agree 100 percent. I have watched the evolution of your craft, allowing me to purchase a admundsun board, and your experience with foils is taking the next step,in choosing a good lake/ dockstart foil.Thank you
I really enjoy all your videos. I learned a lot of stuff and they helped to get better faster. I still struggle to get enough weight to the frontfoot. My backfoot is always much more exhausted!!! Any advice? Which set up do you recommend now for pumping on a lake? Still the axis 1150? Greetings from Switzerland (Iˋm pumping with the Indiana frontwing 1396)
1396 will work well. Try shimming base plate so it’s your board is a bit more nose down and your feet will be more evenly extended and loaded. Check out our “tune your foil” video
Great info!!! I learning wing foiling. Right now in PA the lake's water tension is very 'thick' so learning the wing with Wing Skiing. Last fall I successively used the lake as a netipot and wash the back of my brain. Thanks for info. For newbies nose plugs aren't the coolest but they work great! Thanks again for great info. I am going to tweak the fuselage and rear wing I think.
Thanks for making such a concise video covering all the foiling variants! My only comment is your generalization about aluminum masts being stiffer than carbon masts. Lots of exceptions to that statement.
That’s fair, but I still haven’t found a carbon mast stiffer in torsion (yaw direction) and my favorite, stiffest mast is still the axis 19mm aluminum. Carbon masts tend to have carbon layup focused on bending at expense of torsion and are still favoring low drag (thin, short chord) ahead of slightly higher drag aluminum masts that tend to be thicker and longer chord which helps stiffness.
Great video!!! I built my setup from a clearwater kit and am now looking to upgrade. Have you tried river foiling? That is my next adventure. With a rope in light current up stream and down river is a heavier CFS.
Excellent as always! I need to start thinking about what to get. I have bought a 5M wing but I want to find what I need to wake surf and wing surf, but maybe do some other things, I don't think I'll be able to get away with just one rig for it all. Again, extremely well done video.
Totally inspired here in NW Florida! What kind of setup and or Wing size should we look at for my 80 lb son? We live on a quiet bayou where the odd boat whips through periodically. Loving your videos!
I have a question, so I found a used cabrinha high rise lift foil, would that be good for behind a boat and surfing pretty small boat wakes and maybe pumping wake to wake once and a while, and would a cheap wakesurf board with holes drilled into it to mount the hydrofoil be good, or should I find a actual hydrofoil board, I’m trying to keep it as cheep as I can right now. It seems like a ton of fun and I have a great little run about for this, but getting into it is so expensive, would that set up be good? Or do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

Wow this buyers guide really improved from the previous one. The way you planned all subjects, talked slowly and with the infographics made it really comprehensive. Good Job! I still do have one question where i would like to have your opinion. I’ve heard you say that a rider of 150lbs/68kg only needs 1300sqcm instead of 1700 for similar experience (small wakes and dock start). I (65kg, and no experience) currently have my eyes on a foilset that meets all requirements for the fuselage, mast and front wing except the aspect ratio. The front wing is: - 1300sqcm - 79cm span - 21cm tow Which gives me an aspect ratio of 3.8… do you think i can get away witht his aspect ratio because i’m a lightsr rider or is it for me also recommended to go for a wing with 7 or higher aspect ratio?
Jimmy! Awesome question and thanks for the response. My views have evolved. I now wish I was 150lb and a 1700sqcm / 7 aspect ratio would let me fly much longer … but, I always have to ask if the 150lber wants to carve as easily as I do. With less weight it’s harder to roll a large span wing over. If they say yes, they wanna do more than pump, I usually size them down like you mentioned in your comment. If they say they want to pump I show them our world record pump video when 145lb Will Culberson pumped a 1700sqcm / 7 AR foil for >6min! I’m so jealous. Let me help you directly. Email me please at wakethief@icloud.com. I love your depth.
I didn’t answer your aspect ratio question. I think this foil has a 4.8 (span x span divided by area), which is low to mid aspect. High aspect has lower drag which is always nice but comes at the expense of more sudden lift / takeoff and more challenging roll control (carving). Up to 7/8 seems great with diminishing return beyond that.
Amazing vid! Any advice here?: Trying to decide between Hover Glide FSup (Infinity 84 wing) and HoverGlide FCarve (Quantum 84 wing) also looked at Fpump (Quantum 100 wing). I'm around 220lbs. Riding behind a wake boat. Current intermediate skillset...but don't want to buy something 'less difficult to learn' that I'll eventually get bored of. Priorities are 2nd wave carving, and I'd also like to be able to learn to wing foil in ~10 - 15 knotts wind. Hoping to find a sweet spot, as I don't plan on buying a new wing ever month :)
It has more area. Will let you fly at lower speeds. You’ll also enjoy the distant wakes too. Here are the details: m.ua-cam.com/video/IfZUtNBEl6w/v-deo.html
Cool video(: I use them a lot. I can see you have a slingshot quantum 100 in this video? What do you think about it ? Is it worth the money. Can't find any video with it. So am a little nervous to buy
It’s a nice wing, and if you’re invested in slingshot already, a fun upgrade from 84/99. Not as easy to dock start but more fun to pump and surf small wakes.
Hey Devon, in my wingfoiling experience a bigger front wing doesn't really help in lighter winds as it comes with extra drag. I go with 940 in all conditions. A bigger sail is the best bet, or just freefoil!
@WakeThief Yes correct, however I think that the difference when wingfoiling is quite subtle. Whereas the reduced drag and better glide once up on the foil makes staying up easier. Good to see you enjoying yourself, and making better use of your MPhil than I do mine.
I'm curious about the wing you displayed at 4minutes and 4 seconds where the wings are swept forward. Did you report on that one? I was waiting for your report video on Quantum 100 slingshot but wasn't satisfied with your comment below...so I modified my Gamma 68 Slingshot wing into a 42 inch wingspan. It works nice with my windsurfing 140L board and 5m sail Haven't dockstarted with it yet.
Thanks for the comment. That foil is the XXLW from Horue. We haven’t made a video sharing our experience. We have the Quantum 100 on a list and the footage almost complete. A lot of foils in my basement ready to review and I apologize for the delay. We have three new videos coming very soon. The gamma 68 is a nice foil for the wake. Good luck with your modification. Very cool!
Hi Mike / Here’s a video with instructions. Please reach out with questions! Happy to help. Easy Dock Starting for Hydrofoils ua-cam.com/video/F-ua2ktzOv0/v-deo.html
I was wondering if the real need to foil longer is to design a foil mast set up that allows the mast to be closer to the front foil pivot point. In other words the rider typically sets up with a foot position that straddles the front wing and uses mostly front foot pumping motion. The back foot is not engaged nearly enough. By redesigning the mast so it is mounted at the pivot point of the front wing you might have a more rocker like motion where front pushes down as back pulls up. A board would be slightly rockered with the mast track center board. Straps also become important to efficiently transfer power. The current mechanical motion works but is likely not as efficient as a rocking motion. Again just an observation but would really like to hear thoughts on this.
I think you're right, but for another reason. If we could get the mast closer to the front wing, we would reduce the bending / deflection that would happen at many of the joints. I also think you're right regarding foot placement. There's definitely an opportunity to better rebalance forces between the legs, as the back foot tends to get tired first because it's carrying most of the load. Straps makes a ton of sense. I will try it. Thank you!
Great video. I've kite foiled for many years almost all on a low aspect surf wing. This is great for aggressive carve. But now I'm using this same wing on an efoil and it's not perfect because my goal now is for more power off gliding. Help. Where to begin? I'm on Moses or Lift.... And looking at the Moses 799. I weigh 155 pounds
@@WakeThief On my 5 foot Lift with a 32 mast I have the Lift v2 Surf 200 and a 38 stabilizer. And I also ride with an adapter fuselage to Moses 679 with a 450 stabilizer. Trying to get familiar with the skill set of triggering off and gliding with the Lift folding prop. Thanks
Since efoil drag is dominated by the motor/prop, changing front wings out will most significantly affect take off speed and how much front foot pressure you need to give to hold the efoil down at high speeds. More area will cause both.
Hi. Looking for best set up with gear I have. Have Moses 1100 and 799 front wings and 450 and 370 stabilizer. I have a 70cm fuselage and set up to also mount stab at 60cm. 72cm mast only. Not too small for pumping if you’re 70kg unless you’re good at pumping and can pump fast. It’s likely too small for >70kg folks to dock start but I’ve seen some professionals start foils that small from the dock.
@@WakeThief thanks for the reply! I'm about 175lb so I won't get my hopes up haha. It's from a brand called "crazy foil". I'm sure it'll be fine behind a boat wake. If you have a minute to look it up and give an opinion that would be awesome 😬

@@TodFather007 I'd recommend the 100. It's my favorite and just the right size (not too long that there's additional weight at the nose of the board that isn't helpful and not too short that your foot slides over the nose of the board). Let me know if I can help! I'm here if you need anything. wakethief@icloud.com
@@WakeThief Thanks again! I’ll have to upload some of our success and fails and tag you. Also, love your bungee set up, you will have to check out some of our bungee set up… Thanks again!
Thanks for the question, Angus! I love having to think this stuff through. Yes. I’m quite sure this is how it works but there’s one scenario where it isn’t true and that’s when you’re at really high angles of attack such that the rear wing has a small positive angle of attack and then it will lift a small amount but those high angles of attack are not ideal because drag will be the highest then too. 99% of the time its pulling downward.
maybe like this: If you are a true beginner you brobably shouldnt pick a too fancy one and accept the face that you gonny need two of them. An (cheaper?) easier, less efficient one to learn and to learn what properties ou value in a foil and when you can handle that one pretty well, you can pick a fancy model you can become happy with, otherwise it will be a huge compromise - pump foiling doesnt sound like soemthing, where you want that. I would guess that the requirements of a beginner are often the opposite of that, what an intermediate wants. Its just physics and the engineer in me says that I would want a foil that would be probably very impossible to start gfrom scratch(more sensitive, faster, efficient....) thank god, these things consists of more than one parts and you can upgrade as you improve...
It’s not a bad idea but there isn’t both cheaper and easier. My favorite one, at the link in description, is a good balance for value. Check out our best foil 2024 review to see why … it’s half the price of the high performance and performs only slightly worse.

I’m trying to get my hands on an old dwarf craft micro with no success. Any recommendations on other 11L boards ?
Yes. Appletree Mini and Axis tray are in this size class. There are now many new dwarfs available.
Love your videos, I’m 190-200lbs. Going to be using at lake for pumping and small wave riding from a boat. What foil would you recommended? Axis 1150 with the 460mm rear wing?
Thanks!!
Giddy up! Love that username! Yes. Exactly. I’m the same weight. 1150/460 and the elements we share at the link in the description.

@@WakeThief Thanks, going to order this. What board would you recommend? Slingshot dwarfcraft 110 V1?
@@TodFather007 I'd recommend the 100. It's my favorite and just the right size (not too long that there's additional weight at the nose of the board that isn't helpful and not too short that your foot slides over the nose of the board). Let me know if I can help! I'm here if you need anything. wakethief@icloud.com
@@WakeThief Thanks again! I’ll have to upload some of our success and fails and tag you. Also, love your bungee set up, you will have to check out some of our bungee set up…
Thanks again!
Please send videos! I’m always here.
Are you absolutely sure that the stabalizer pulls down? I was always told that the stab pushes up, to counter the pitch induced by the front wing.
There is a recent thread on Kiteforum explaining that in details: "Stabilizer's lifting force..."
Thanks! I’ll check it out.

Please share the pdf file of this information so I can translate and learn at least😢
please turkish language subtitle😢😢😢
maybe like this: If you are a true beginner you brobably shouldnt pick a too fancy one and accept the face that you gonny need two of them. Its just physics and the engineer in me says that I would want a foil that would be probably very impossible to start gfrom scratch(more sensitive, faster, efficient....)
thank god, these things consists of more than one parts and you can upgrade as you improve...
It’s not a bad idea but there isn’t both cheaper and easier. My favorite one, at the link in description, is a good balance for value. Check out our best foil 2024 review to see why … it’s half the price of the high performance and performs only slightly worse.
