  • This week on History of Israel Explained - Golda Meir, Israel's first female prime minister (though hopefully not the last) - the original Iron Lady and a figure whose legacy continues to divide Israelis.
A feminist, a go getter, the creator of Israel's welfare state and a fierce advocate for the newly independent African states of the 1960s. In many ways, she was Golden.
Golda Meir has a complicated legacy. Her many successes were overshadowed by her actions in the Yom Kippur War. Revered by some, reviled by others, Israel's first woman prime minister never forgave herself for her decisions in 1973.
What do you think of Meir's actions and legacy? Let us know in the comments below!

Leadership is a tough challenge at any time. In my opinion, Golda was a statesman and an icon. For a woman to do what she did in a man's world in 70's and the decades before, was exceptional. To do that in Israel at that time was a huge challenge. I don't believe she has received the acknowledgement she deserves regardless of her 'mistakes'. Leading Israel is no easy challenge and I think Israel has focused on the negatives rather than giving her the place she deserves in history

I applaud the Israeli's attitude of taking responsibility for themselves and investigating where the fault lies for the Yom Kippur War. However, ultimately the fault lies with Egypt and Syria. It is easy to say now that Israel should have struck first (I also believe this). But not only is it easy to make that statement now with the benefit of hindsight; it is also not a guarantee that would have led to a better outcome. I personally do think it would have improved things; but I like to be honest and point out that there is no way of knowing how that would have affected the whole situation. Would striking first have stirred up the whole region and created a larger scale war? Would it have allowed the Soviets to get involved? It very probably would have limited how much help the US could have given. This kind of discussion always reminds me of the commonly held belief that Britain and France should have attacked Hitler when he reoccupied the Rhineland. With the benefit of hindsight it is easy to say that Britain and France could have averted the whole tragedy of WW2 if they would have acted in 1936-1938. And that is almost certainly true but I bet history would remember Britain and France as warmongers who started a war that cost fifty thousand lives never knowing that they prevented a war and saved eighty million lives. Ultimately I do believe the Israelis had developed a sense of invulnerability due to their amazing previous military successes; most notably the Six Day War. And I think that once the war was upon them they reacted well and performed admirably and showed to themselves and the rest of the world that they can win against the odds not only when they strike first but also when they are surprised by an attack. These are valuable lessons that might have contributed to the longer term peace between Israel and its neighbors, but it is hard to say for sure. Ultimately nobody is perfect and errors in judgement will occur. Finding ways to limit the errors and then reacting appropriately to the circumstances that result in errors is what defines a great leader and I think Golda Meir did those things very well.

Thanks so much for the Video -- my Grandparents, who were with their three daughters refugees from Katowice during WWII, absolutely adored her. It is a shame that here in contemporary Germany, of all places, she is hardly known. In my view she was one of the most impressive and formative political leaders of modern times, and in the context of recent events, especially the Ukraine war, her legacy is more relevant than ever. She was born in Kiev, after all... what would her answer have been to a Russian president who lables a Jewish president of Ukraine residing in her birth town a Nazi? Some folks consider Golda Meir a hardliner. I'd simply call her strong. Not strong in the sense of the currently (again) fashionable autocratic narcissist strong-men. Her strength rigorously and single mindedly focused on protecting her people in nothing less than a post apocalyptic era of history. When once I argued in favor of pacifism, one of my professors at King's London countered that pacifism never could have stopped Hitler. True. I'd say Golda was a pacifist with a black belt (so am I). Such folks are not aggressive, but attackers: beware of the response. There is a huge difference between strength and aggressivity. More often than not aggressive behavior is a result of insecurity and weakness while confident strength can be a solid foundation for calmness, patience and mild manners. That's what I always saw in Golda: Not meaning bad, not being about herself, her ego, but beaing realistic, making clear to the greater world that there are issues where compromises are not open for debate...

Coming late to the party as well, I would also like to add that there were differences of opinion between the mossad and the army. The mossad had spies in Egypt and knew of the intention to start the war. The IDF did not have at the time the capabilities to track the military build up on the egyptian side and they made a mistaken assessment, especially the head of Intelligence. It was mossad vs. IDF top generals. Indeed Golda was the one who had to make a desicion to whom to listen.

No one ever feels the need to point out that a man has dragged his wife to another country. That people still feel this need for women shows that there's still inequality. Sure, there was a bit of "You go girl!" in the tone and, considering when she did it, it was surprising but it was already obvious from context that it was her leading the charge

When you are not on the driving seat, is easy to make judgements. Considering that this was a women with no formal education in times when woman didn’t have a place at table much less in charge of making national and world impactful decisions. Golda, in my eyes, lived to her title of iron woman. She could not have said it better, she made so many good decisions, perhaps, and I say it with deep respect and humility, when facing a war she didn’t apply her mantra “take action and get staff done” and allowed a committee made up of men to influence her decisions.

Kissinger secretly told Golda "if Israel announced mobilization first they would not get a single bullet from the US".
Kissinger was trying to create the illusion of an "Arab victory", to help them save face after the 1967 war. He did this so Egypt wouldenter peace negotiations with Israel.
    She had no choice.
I remember meeting her. Amazing lady.

In hindsight the decisions were wrong, but it would have taken a lot to counteract what the military advisors were saying, and there was no way to know for sure. The problem with the advisors is the same as the problem today. Military and political leaders don’t take into account the psychology of people’s behavior. Experiencing humiliation is not likely to make people avoid trying again. It’s likely to make them try harder so they can feel better, undo the sense of humiliation, and feel some sense of efficacy. This is true of individuals and it is true of nations. This is also, unfortunately, usually ignored when dealing with Palestinians today.
On another note- In our time, when political leadership seems incapable of introspection or of acknowledging responsibility, it is especially touching to hear about Golda Meir’s pained remorse about the Yom Kippur war.

First, I am "falling in love" with this channel. In these days of instant global communication, its imperative to get "Our Story", out there to a global audience. Secondly, I want to commend Gabriel, Yitz, and Jacob, and all the production team there, great work!!! (and I am NOT tuchas kissing) I MIGHT know how hard one has to work to craft content, and condense Golda's intensely nuanced story into less than ten minutes.....envious, in that I would have loved to sat in on those pre-pro meetings...anyway, proud of you all, "N", a homeless Jew in 'Babylon"

The argument of not being the agressor is a very good one, but its not enough. No one will blame you to prepare the army to be on high alert after seeing your enemies "doing exercices" at your very borders.
Do not want to be the agressor? Fine, but be ready, do not assume the enemy will be peaceful after having showed you that it isn't. Many casualties could had been avoided and keep the myth of invincibility with dignity. The surprise attack is what broke the myth as if they would had been prepared, nothing as such would had happened
