    You should mention the fact that no military or special force was allowed operate in Germany, as per the world war 2 surrender. This event lead to GSG-9. German police weren't even allowed to have optics on their rifles. You had what were essentially security guards going up against prepared nut jobs. An event like this was predicted, but only NATO was allowed to operate in Germany, in any capacity that would have made any difference. Your omission of these facts smack of prejudice.

    This reminds me of an incident in 1939. During the New York world's fair, the Poland exhibit was suddenly closed one day, with the reason given that Germany invaded and annexed Poland, meaning it's no longer an independent nation and can't have an exhibit. This rocketed the Nazi Party into international attention, and many historians consider it the unofficial start of World War II.

    • @ashlati4616
      @ashlati4616 11 місяців тому +3

      The only pavilion closed that year was the German one, and even though the US was not at war with Germany at the time, Nazi Germany claimed budgetary issues were the cause of the closure. Poland and Czechoslovakia government in exile kept theirs open with a stubborn national pride, as did France later in 1940

    I think you judge the West German police too harshly. In 1972, the tradecraft we now call counter-terrorism did not really exist. Though the Israelis were perhaps the most proficient at that time, their own big debut did not come until 1975 with Entebbe. In the US, "Seal Team 6" did not yet exist, neither did Delta Force, neither did the super-specialties of CQB and hostage rescue required for precisely clearing small spaces like airplanes. Just like technology, tactics have a developmental history. Ironically, the Germans of the previous generation may actually have been more capable of delivering results, but not the demilitarized West Germany of 1972. As a result of this event, they founded the GSG-9, which remains today one of the world's best units at this sort of thing.

So its reasonable why the middle east hates the us and israelis, they came and brought the war to them from their point of view what in my point of vies is the fault of them not being scking dkc like we germans did the second time we were beaten and now look we are actually rich but it cost stuff too, a lot of people pissed and a lot of people happy. I Would like to clarify something for you.
    I was in the military in the early 80s. Our state of the art night vision equipment was known as a starlight scope.
    It was huge it emitted a tiny tone when switched on. It worked by gathering ambient light e.g. stars.
    Any actual close light. Such as a bic lighter completely overloaded the system. Use in an area with even limited light sources becomes impossible.

    Correction: the helicopter pilots we're not killed. However, the terrorists had promised the pilots they'd be free once landed. Instead these pilots we're ordered to stand by their aircraft.
    I'd like to think this whole incident could have been avoided. The 1st to die was wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg. Before the games he expressed a wish to compete with the Arab nations as did fencing coach Andre Spitzer. Ironically, the previous July the PLO applied to field a team to compete in these games. They were rejected by the IOC. This rejection may have further provoked this outrage.
    Perhaps in a happier universe these young men would have been competing with each other.

    This story always makes me so sad. 😔 I haven't seen Spielberg's film "Munich" yet, but seeing the trailers for it, got me interested in learning more about the event.
    And my personal takeaway from it, is that we should all be working to help Israel & Palestine reach a peaceful solution to their long-standing conflict -- preferably by two-state solution or dual citizenship. Sure, the Jews may deserve their original homeland, but the Palestinians also deserve a safe place to live, free of all violence, tragedy, & strife! There is absolutely NO REASON why Israelites & Palestinians cannot live in peace, harmony, & happiness together -- & that is a cause we should ALL be fighting for, not stopping until we see it through to the end!

Why couldnt Jews just call themselves Palestinians? The Torah named us Israel's sons. Naturally we stay with this name. Palestines is the name of one of the 7 nations that tried to kill us after escaping Egypt so we'll never agree on taking their name. And you're right. We didn't need to "steal" what was already ours. We could just coexist, Israel and the countries around us. No wars, no hostility. But that didn't work is we all well know. "The idea of differing Muslims" well that's the point. Muslims are Muslims and Jews are Jews. We're not the same. I think we should accept eachother's beliefs. No you're wrong and I'm right but you believe in A and i believe in B. Also another reason we called our country Israel is to make it clear that it's a home for Jews. If it wasn't official we would have been sent away without a second thought. Hope it answered your questions and explained a few points. If you want to disagree with me than by all means. Germany had been without armed forces since the was dissolved following World War II. When the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in 1949, it was without a military. Germany remained completely demilitarized and any plans for a German military were forbidden by Allied regulations. Some naval mine-sweeping units continued to exist, but they remained unarmed and under Allied control and did not serve as a national defence force. The Federal Border Protection Force, a mobile, lightly armed police force of 10,000 men, was formed on 14 March 1951 and expanded to 20,000 men on 19 June 1953. This is coming from a high school teacher who has taught and researched this story for +25 years AND watched it happen on American TV as an 8-year-old kid. I've also been to Munich and walked/studied the layout at the park and village. Brundage did not make his famous "Games Must go On" quote until AFTER the terrorist/hostage situation had ended. He did this during the memorial service on September 6th.

I don't think I was "there" much of the time, hopped up on IM narcotics. Prescribed, of course. I was born and raised in a civilian counter terrorist family, amongst other "specialties". Born in 1965, I have only three news-related memories from watching television in my early childhood - 1) The Apollo rocket zooming in darkness like a comet in reverse. 2) Soldiers returning fire from foxholes in an open field in Vietnam. 3) A man with his head covered completely by a mask, holding a machine gun, continually appearing on the balcony of an apartment building and disappearing again. It went on all day long, and our TV was on all day long. I remember the low-grade fear I felt, vaguely aware the whole world was feeling it with me. It hurts me to admit it now, but that's exactly what Black September wanted. In that sense they were holding everyone hostage that day. The feeling of supreme power those terrorists must have felt was no doubt the ultimate intoxicant, which I've come to conclude is the primary motive of all kinds of terrorism, including shooting sprees in schools here in the US - the ultimate narcotic of playing God, if only for a moment. It explains why such people would throw away their freedom and even their lives for it. Political motives don't fully explain it - look how people focused primarily on a political cause are only willing to sacrifice their time, energy and emotions, with a secondary willingness to suffer some setbacks, including (at worst) a short jail term. The same is true for religious beliefs as for political beliefs - nobody anywhere in the world is really willing to die for those beliefs, only to live and fight for them. The willingness to die only comes in when the lust for power and control takes over a radical's psyche, overwhelming and pushing aside mere political and religious beliefs.

      @@luciferangelica If I'd ended up working for the US government I'd be as lost as the rest of them when it comes to how things really work in this world. For the USG, politics and psychology are like oil and water - for me they're like a powdered drink mix and water. I once read in a book on creativity about a guy who won a prize for an ultralight airplane design. He had the least experience among the competitors, all of whom were accomplished aviation engineers. The guy who won had some background in that but also in other types of engineering and some in art, also. It's not really surprising - why WOULD someone come up with the best design for something if they had experience in only one discipline? Academia is also problematic in that way. It's the "Ivory Tower" syndrome. A temporary lecturer I met at an ivy league university once drew an analogy that the permanent lecturers knew a tree from one angle only. If you tried to explain to them that a tree can be known from different angles and on different levels, they'd clutch all the more tightly to their view of the tree as the only view. At the end of my three years as an American student in South Africa back in the 1980s, the US State Dept rejected my application for an internship when they saw how many countries I'd visited in black Africa (including Sudan, which supported Gaddafi at the time). They saw my first-hand experience as a security risk instead of a qualification. Decades later I called the State Dept's South Africa hotline to see what conditions were like there now for travelers. All the official did was refer me to their website. He sounded both arrogant and apathetic. I hung up thanking God for protecting me from becoming that.

      @@luciferangelica My initial reaction was that you were being sarcastic, but I decided to treat it otherwise because I've gotten tired of being on the defensive with UA-cam replies, and because the main thing I get from comments in general is what I learn from my own as I formulate them. Keep in mind that not only is everyone who comments on UA-cam an "expert" but also that a lot of them are wiser than the people officially recognized as experts. Keep in mind, too, that it's only by thinking in the right direction that we're getting closer to the truth. If we're going to wait until someone leaps the chasm to the absolute truth and then calls us from the other side, the only truth we'll ever get is how stupid and cowardly we can be. And who has the real answers, anyways? Maybe God will make a comment on social media one day. If so, the post probably won't get many views or upvotes. Thanks for your own thoughts and have a great new year.
