Hi all, I know this radio has gone out of stock quite a few times. It also seems that it may now be suffering from QC issues, so I can't continue to recommend it. I've posted a similar one (almost identical) without the LCD display in the video description which looks to be the best option, and has excellent reviews. There is also a link for an identical unit under a different name that might be a good option if you want the LCD screen. Also, check out the RF750 from Radioddity, video is now up! ua-cam.com/video/FPRKZcz_b4I/v-deo.html
This looks like the same one. The Amazon listing has four different models to choose from depending upon which option you click on, so that can be confusing. All the terrible one-star reviews (to the left of the "Verified Purchase" in the reviews) are for the small A1 model. "FosPower Emergency Weather Radio (Model D9) NOAA/AM/FM with 14800mWh Portable Power Bank, USB/Solar/Hand Crank Charging, Flash Light, SOS Alarm, IPX3 Rating & Bluetooth for Indoor/Outdoor Emergency"
When my sister was confined in a public hospital with limited wall outlets, my mobile phone survived with this crank radio. I used it as a powerbank and listen to the news at the same time. Great little helper for me. Now I don't leave home without it.
I got mine of Amazon a few months ago just for the heck of it, and audio is great. Mostly listen to AM on it but can get shortwave with a antenna clip to my outdoor roof antenna. All n all it's a fun radio.
I was so impressed by your review, I went to Amazon to purchase one. I was disappointed to see that it's currently unavailable. Hopefully it will be back in stock soon. Thanks for the review.
I got one of these on sale, but had to return it. The example I got had noisy reception unless you held it or touched the antenna. Sitting by itself on a table it struggled to pick up strong MW stations in my area. I have the Raddy version with the analogue dial that works just fine, but it's hard to read.
Sorry to hear that. I found I had to move mine around depending on the station to clear up AM, as well as get it away from stuff in my house that causes RFI. I can't tell you how much I've grown to hate wireless chargers.
Maybe they Raddy was only mean to use rechargeable batteries while plugged into AC, like most older radios. If so, could have been trying to charge the alkalines and could have fried a resistor, or even blew up the batteries! The second radio looks cool 😎.
You reviewed a radio without ever turning it on or giving us a sample of what it sounds like. That is just the weirdest thing ever. Weirder still? The rest of the review is pretty great! You have a pleasant voice, you covered basically every other single feature (except how much cranking is actually necessary in real world use for how many minutes of power it generates), all of it. But you never turned it on or listened to it. So strange.
I seldom listen to shortwave, but if I do I just use my old Hallicrafters S-40 boat anchor I restored a few years ago. More of a nostalgia thing than anything else.
Possible, yes. Is it likely? The manual has no such warning in it. If there is current being fed to the batteries, that would be a major design flaw or omission in the manual.
Matt, I have looked and looked for this radio with case and cannot find one anywhere...if its not available what would you recommend that is very similar to this radio ???
Per my pinned comment, I've ordered a similar item that I'll be looking at this week and will post a video. I don't want to recommend something I haven't tried out myself first. It seems the Grearadio folks have had issues keeping things in stock as well as QC issues as of late, which is disappointing. Stay tuned, I know people want a reliable multi-function radio to use in times like these and I'm chomping at the bit to find one for you. Hopefully this will be a good one.
I wish that were the case. There is no recharge circuit in the Raddy. The A/C bypasses the batteries. The manual states to only use dry batteries and that the battery indicator flashing indicates the batteries need to be replaced, not recharged.
@Matt Covers Tech, Here goes it! (At no time should you plug that external power plug coming from the wall outlet for a period of time and to observe what happens when that radio is turned back on by doing the following sequences that you may have to perform a series of visual inspections for bad soldering joints, frayed wires and multimeter continuity checks and total observations are complete). If you are too uncomfortable about performing the following service checks then by all rights DON'T do it!!! Since that other Raddy Radio keeps trying to power cycle repeatedly, try the following steps from start to finish.... 1.) With the radio off, make sure to unplug the radio cord that supplies power from the wall outlet first. 2.) Extract the battery(s), both the consumables and the internal rechargeable if it has one that you can get at, initially. 3.) Then turn the radio power switch to on for a period of oh say 5-10 minutes, turn the power switch off, then put your batteries back into to it; then power the radio back up and just see what happens from that time onward! If it powers normally without power cycling back on and off continually, the battle is nearly over! If when you plug the external power cord and turn the radio back on and it starts that power cycling all over again, this means that perhaps you have a problem residing with either the built in power switch integral with the external cord socket that switches the dc power over to ac power on just for instance. Yes, you heard that right! The corded end plug that goes into that socket of the radio, has a built in integral switch that switches your ac supplied cord over to the DC current battery mode. NOW, if it had been that you didn't have that corded plug end deeply seated into it's socket on the radio for instance, this may have contributed to that problem of it power cycling/boot looping like a red headed step child....(maybe)! At first thought, it could have been perhaps the radio having a bad power connection internally, or just a power problem altogether, such as the power supply itself. At least in the use of a computer, if you have the kind of problem in which your pc that does a continual boot loop situation, it could be blamed on a bad power supply and should become first suspect OR a bad power switch. So for either scenario, you should ALWAYS look/test for bad switches first and foremost, bad power connections, bad power source OR the power supply that may be faulty. These are by far the usual case/causes. YET, should this not be the problem, well then you would have to take a closer look at the internals for other things that could become most evident, such as: at the battery pack regions inside; Are there bad looking or poor looking soldering connections that could be to blame. Are there wires that are soldered to these tabs of the battery pack that are only hanging on by just a couple strands and are needed to be redone to make things good as should be? Before you commit to tearing into the internals, once again, disconnect your main source of external power and extract the batteries of all kinds! 4.) Next inline would be is: On the main power switch, can you carry out some simple multimeter tasks or testing to make sure that the switch contacts are making and breaking with the very least amount of resistance internally as in zero ohms or at least very close to zero as in about .1 - .2 ohms of resistance. So what if: you were to find a problem internally, while also having the radio apart??? Well, the second thing that you absolutely do is to replace that grungy ridiculous speaker with a finer, more better one that is no taller than the original, with the same shape and diameter as the original yet has the same ohms of impedance, may it be 8, 6, or 4 ohms with the same ohms of impedance with a said 10 Watts of power rating and has a bigger around sized magnet for a meager 15 bucks or less and big rid of that nasty sounding audio while you are at it! Just by perusing these steps that I have given you, you might have things wrapped up nice and tidy with that repair job and the installation of a new speaker from your favorite Amazon Store with about a whole hour of labor invested in total, plus a valuable learning experience that may very well afford you a path forward to making other repairs in the future! These are quite easy checks even if you might be even a little not repair suave but is a very good start and is NOT hard to do! You would be surprised at how some people just allow themselves to be easily stumped and/or end up embarrassing themselves by not checking their units out as a matter of at least being a little bit curious as to what is going on with a simple multimeter and at least some a little bit of hands on training via yt. You would be surprised! As for most people, they just don't want to deal with things because they manage to stress themselves out rather than try and take the plunge so as to calmly and instinctively challenge themselves and address the situation or problem at hand.
You're tempting me to start another project, lol! I still have to get my back up generator hooked into my electrical panel. Just fixed my washing machine on Monday (Controller board issue with corrosion from steam on the solder points of all things! Cleaned it, sealed it, good to go). Thinking back, I think the radio did it both only running on batteries, as well as when plugged in, but maybe I'll test that out again. If that's the case, my first guess would be a bad connection from the batteries that gives out intermittently, causing the radio to think it needs to switch power supplies when it doesn't. It's fun to tinker with stuff for sure, but Radioddity's QC on this was poor, that much is certain. What really bothers me is the external antenna jack killing all signal. That to me says possible lack of filtering, but it could be something else.
@@MattCoversTech Yep! Well if you're not going to use that radio you should give it to one of the UA-camrs that cannibalizes tech and they could use it for something maybe you could do a collab
@@johnsky7835Most of the SSB signals I run across are fellow hams. I don’t think I’ve ever run across a broadcast shortwave station running SSB, but maybe I don’t get out enough. 🤷🏻♂️
@MattCoversTech valuable information in emergencies can be gained from ham radio operators. Lack of SSB is a no go for any short wave radio I would want to buy. Honestly, I'm a ham and just use my hf ham radio for short wave. Portability would be the only reason I was intrested at first.
I got two of those radios, and they are the worst of my SW radio portables. Poor reception and difficult to use. It may be ok if you have nothing to compare it to! I have two as one was defective out of the box, and Amazon didn't want it back.
I'm really sorry you had a bad experience. I had very good reception on SW that matched what I was getting on my RSP1A SDR, but I know that experiences will vary. Got to love the Amazon return policy though, I always try to buy things through them for that very reason. If you order from one of the overseas websites that people sometimes promote, you may not have a good outcome. I'm not comfortable promoting them for that very reason. If you get a lemon, you should get your money back or a replacement, and it shouldn't be hard to do.
Honestly .....This has the same kind of design as that Chinese crap ZHIWHIS that I've had the misfortune of buying. Probably the same people building under different names. I'm glad you like it, but I'm a going to pass.
That’s completely fair. To me, those look more like the Radioddity RF919/RF320 style which I haven’t gotten my hands on. They also cost quite a bit more! I think Notarubicon may have done a review of one on his channel. My experience with this has been good so far.
Little consolation when you go up against corporate lawyers with bottomless funding. I’ve been down this path before as a musician and I have no desire to do so again.

@MattCoversTech the link is to the analog version - no lcd. For some reason, the version with the lcd has bad reviews.

It appears to have morphed into a DAB/DAB+ radio with no short wave. This thing I can find NOWHERE!
There is another branded version of the same radio. I've added it to the description above.

It's out of stock everywhere as far as I can tell. See the pinned comment at the top.
Is it possible that hooking the radio up to AC power with the batteries installed caused the radio to heat up and power off for that reason?
Possible, yes. Is it likely? The manual has no such warning in it. If there is current being fed to the batteries, that would be a major design flaw or omission in the manual.

You must NOT have alkaline batteries in it if you plug in 110v. It tries to charge them. And messes it up.

That’s roughly double the cost in USD, and that’s after taxes! Why would that be?
@@MattCoversTech usual rip off culture over here what you pay in $ is the same number we pay in £
Well if you're not going to use that radio you should give it to one of the UA-camrs that cannibalizes tech and they could use it for something maybe you could do a collab
Not a bad idea. It’s definitely not very useful in its current state.
nice but no SSB no deal.
What does that mean? I'm unfamiliar.
@@Beats-sx1ch Single Side Band. A lot of broadcasts are single side bands.
@@johnsky7835 Thank you. I'm new to radio, i appreciate the knowledge.
And the cost is?
HOPEFULLY IT IS NOT DISPOSABLE JUNK ON 3 YRS LIKE SMARTPHONES BECOME NOWDAYS. ELECTRONICS YEARS AGO LASTED DECADES
No case right now with it.
What makes you say that?
@@MattCoversTech
When I bring it up on Amazon it doesn’t show the hard case, just the radio.
Looks like a tricorder from Star Trek
I lol'd a lil when you attempted to pronounce the Greadio name.. it's most likely a play on the words great radio. 🤷🏽♂️
The speaker can be repurchased. The rest goes in the garbage. The first radio
Speaker can be Re purposed*
I came here because of the title. It's because people use whatsapp now.
Bro! Use 2 hands please!
The name is a play on "great." So it is pronounced Gray-de-oh.
another annoying DSP chip?
Out of stock
Back in stock now.
It's flimsy it's cheap it doesn't keep its charge that's why no one's talking about it I sent mine back
Thanks for commenting.
FAIR USE BY YOU IS SHOWN
Little consolation when you go up against corporate lawyers with bottomless funding. I’ve been down this path before as a musician and I have no desire to do so again.
Many terrible reviews on Amazon😢
