My Favorite Catfish Rig

  • I've been asked to do a demonstration video on how to tie my catfish rig. I use this rig because of it's simplicity. By eliminating the swivels, it takes less time to rig up and saves money in the long run. I know some of you are wondering if my line twists up without a barrel swivel, but believe it or not, it doesn't. Maybe it's because I use braided line. If I'm fishing heavy cover, I'll tie a simple overhand knot on the weight. This way if the weight gets stuck I can pull on the line and undo the knot. Sometimes the leader knot will pull tight to the hook when I do this, but I simply retie the leader and add a new weight.
    Check out Steve Douglas' video on how he ties a Kentucky Rig: • Catching Catfish using...

    This rig is so easy to put together on the spot and get back to fishing. I use it as my drop shot rig for crappie, too. And your version of the Kentucky rig really should be called the Kentucky Flores rig because of the way you put it together. Fast and effective. Thanks so much.

      Would this work in a pond? Should I use a smaller weight for pond fishing? Would a circle hook work fine too?

    • @greenpea9412

      @@user-hi1lt9sl8u Absolutely. You could use the smaller weight as you mention because you are not dealing with a current.

    Thanks for the demonstration. I enjoyed your story about your dad. My dad also taught me and my brother how to fish when I was a little girl. My brother never really cared for fishing, but I did and I still do to this day. My father always caught mostly bass, crappie and bluegill. I have caught a few catfish throughout the years, but they just happen take the bait. Now, I want to learn how to fish specifically for catfish so I appreciate your taking out the time to make and upload this video. Fishing is not the same now that my father is no longer here, ( he fell asleep in death in 2015). And it has been a while since I have gone fishing because I just don’t have much time, and I don’t know many people who like to fish. Of course the coronavirus pandemic didn’t help. However, I just can’t get fishing out of my system. Whenever I see someone else catching “ the big one”, or even when I go by the sporting goods section of Walmart, I see those rods, reels, hooks and lures and it makes me want to go somewhere and drop that hook in the water. Anyway, thanks again for the video.

    The rig was a lesson for you both were you wanting to show your dad and your dad learning humility but he's right he was fishing before you're around don't get too cocky with that you might have a six-year-old or an eight-year-old show you something down the road when you're an old man just do it!!!!! I have two sons and a daughter and believe I fish with all of them and it's so much about just being with each other when you catch fish that's just a bonus!!!!

    This was the first rig i ever used, step dad showed me when i was 13. I'm 20 now and i use a Carolina rig with 1.5oz flat sliding weight 50lb braided main line and a mono leader with a 2 snelled hooks one at the top of my cut bait and one at the bottom. where i live there is a big issue with aggressive short bites and then losing bait or the fish just not coming back; thus the double hook. Hope my rig can help someone!

    My dad taught me how to fish for suckers in Michigan and it was basically y the same as your Kentucky rig but he showed me to use 2 hooks !! One down by the sinker about 8inches above and one about 10-12inches above the bottom hook (where it is put on the main line) it really worked well for suckers would work on catfish but if you fought 2 bigger ones it could break your line

  • @wesleyshankles5373
    @wesleyshankles5373 9 років тому

    I didn't know that it was called a Tennessee rig, but it is what I use in creeks and rivers. I used to do the Carolina rig in moving water and had the same problems with bait thieves and turtles.
    One thing I do different is when I drift fish, I use a smaller weight that I flatten out so it will catch the current and move with the water. I pitch up stream and let it drift with the current. It is VERY productive. You have to hawk your line, "watch it real close" and if the bite happens up stream, real the slack and set fast. Watch where the hits are happening and you can usually switch over to a bigger weight and pitch right into the school.
    I love river fishing!

    Consider this: the second knot (the hook knot) is a friction knot, which can end up being a weak point. Instead, try making your loop, run it through the eye of your Gamakatsu, and bring the hook directly through the loop. You end up without the friction knot, but just as strong. Then, at the end of the day, dismantling the rig is just as easy! Good luck.

    I been catching catfish using that same rig. My Grandpa taught me. Sometimes I get technical & use swivels on the Hook end, Since cats like to spin. The goal is to keep the hook off the bottom & just high enuff where the catfish are. Especially if fishing in creek with logs and other hang-ups.

    This rig is great for panfish to especially in creeks all you have to do is don’t worry about making a leader for the hook just to the hook on the line 1-2 feet up. Keeps your worm of the bottom
