Ep134 - Autumn Harvest, Field Beans and The Circus! || Plot 37

- Busy week again in the garden, although the weather could have been better! Started the week with a trip to see Johanna at the garden centre but got some allotment jobs ticked off too. We found and planted/sowed Field Beans as a green manure and winter vegetable. Did a big tidy of the pond before coving up with netting to stop the leaves getting in over winter and harvested chard and more borlotti beans. We also had an impromptu trip to the circus!
Huge thanks as always to those named at the end of the vlog for their wonderful support.

Jessie, You and your mom are such an inspiration to me. I am revamping a property - front landscape and backyard vegetable garden. I get weary at times but watching your videos I realize I am not alone in projects. Thank you for inspiration.
Ah, what a fantastic project to be doing Rebecca!
So amazing 😘
The irises will grow on dry land as well as in water.
❤&Mum❤
Trombons....chop them up and put them in pasta sauce, curry, stiir fry. They are denser than courgettes and have little flavour but.....its food....funny food 😂
Actually they are delicious and it's a shame to waste them. Yep it's food and food should never be wasted.👍
@@thelandofmint mine never reached a 'delicious' stage.
@@lynnpurfield9430 roasted with cinnamon and ricotta then made into ravioli or roasted, etc and made into risotto with plenty of excellent cheese...the problem is the quality of cheeses and olive oil are not great as here in Italy...just a bit of authentic parmigiano cheese and the dish is transformed into another level of deliciousness. Sadly in the UK and the USA (which is worse ) the quality of food is terrible...by the way I'm a Brit living in the mountains in central Italy for over ten years now😊..and the tromboncino I grew this summer is a metre long😳👍😘
I haven’t found them to have masses of flavour either Lynn… but nice texture. and yeah, never waste!
Wow those Irises were a battle ! Save us Jessie and give us some chard and spinach recipes pleeease . Really enjoyed watching you sort the plot this week ,sadly it wasn't mine and I'm going to have to face the music and tackle mine 😁
They weighed a ton Susie!! And yeah, I’ll be swamping you with chard love later this month hahaha!
I never new your pond was that large, nice to see the water. Love your shopping trip.
Yeah, its been a bit hidden hahaha!
Hi Jess the tronbochina are fabulous when they are mature. Just treat them like butternut squash as to me they taste and look very similar. The seeds collect in the bulbous part and the long bit is solid flesh. It's an awesome veg.
I was going to comment the same, but scrolled to see if anyone else has already commented.
I’m a tad intimidated by the size Gaynor hahaha! But i will be eating them!
Hi Jessie, I used to have a large allotment but now grow veg in my small back garden, while sharing a community space which has a large polytunnel, something I never had. So I realise just how much work you put in week by week. I find watching and listening to your commentary each Tuesday evening so relaxing as well as informative.
Thank you so much Andrew!
Hi Jessie, wow! Your Iris is huge, good job done by both of you & the pond looks a lot better too🙂 so pleased you found your field beans and now planted them. You have hot quite a lot of clearing up jobs done too. Nice update thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Thanks Christine! Yeah, been meaning to kick those irises out for ages!
I just love your videos Jessie ♡ I always learn and get inspired from them
:D Thank you Tamara!
Jessie, I love how you just show snippets of your boyfriend 😂😂 We need and introduction soon on your videos ❤
Hahhahaha, he’s not convinced about being on UA-cam Kay hahahahaha!
@@JessieatPlot37 🤣🤣🤣🤣
another lovely video jess
Thank You Steven!
I got excited as soon as I realised we were on the coach and remembered where you said we were going. Loved that you were tag teaming the iris!
I remember the only pond I ever had in a garden…, never again!!!… hated the irises and bulrushes and the slimy green weed… loved the frogs, toads and the fish…, until the local heron ate nearly all of them… but I do really admire you and ‘Mom’ for loving and maintaining yours 👍👍…It sure is a barmy world… with those blackberries flowering again 😱😱….and finding out you had those field bean seeds ‘all the time’!!!!…happens to me all the time!!!…Ha ha ha…. Love your ‘Halloween tomatoes….’glad that no more content on that topic, as sick of everything ‘halloweeny’…Anyway, another very industrious week on the plot…including the actual field bean planting…thank goodness for that!!!….congrats on getting a feed of French beans too….every little success is tasty one on an allotment…Cheers to both of you, the ‘girlies’ and t HR e ever glamorous ‘Lil’…Sue (Birmingham) 👏👏👏
Hahahaha! Yeah, ponds can be a right pain can’t they! And i know Sue, everything’s out of whack!! Cheers to you too!
@@JessieatPlot37 … did you read my comment (late one) on previous episode??
I am still SUPER envious of your massive 3 bay compost system :D
Hahahaha, not so great at ‘turning time’!
circus without animals! yaaaaaay!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 now we only need to talk the performers into using safety nets!! lovely video as always! Cheers Dear Jessie! 😊❤
I know, i was slightly worried there would be animals but nope! No a single one!
Oh that looked like one hell of a job pulling out the Iris. I love them but the same happenened in our little pond. We chose to turn that patch into a bog garden, pierced the liner and let it live on. We made another little pond using an old bath. Seems to be an ongoing learning curve where ponds are concerned.
Pond mastery is an elusive business!
Sweet dumpling are delicious, definitely worth a go if you are into winter squashes.
Oh thats good to know Magpie, thank you!
I loved your artwork on the tomatoes, they looked like mini pumpkins. Very appropriate for Hallowe’en. Your allotment cat is really cute. I’m inspired by your enthusiasm for the allotment and your livestock. Fresh home grown produce always tastes the best.
Hahahah, it does always taste the best!
I've tried growing that Shooting Star yellow climbing courgette a couple of times without success. What little fruit I got was quite bitter. Had some cracking butternuts this year though.
Another good week and video. We are to freeze big time this next week. Night lows of 21 F. Ugh! So gardening break for me... And...From profile you can sure see that You and Johanna are sisters.
Thanks Jaynee. Nobody ever says we look alike! Maybe we should show off our profiles more often hahaha!
It's always nice to visit nurseries 👍
Love the net idea. All our ponds catch apples and leaves from the huge apple tree.
Ha!!! Field beans....I do it all the time 😂
Hahahaha!
I so look forward to seeing your videos on Mondays
Ah thank you Stacy!
Oo great find, Shooting Star...a must have.
Have you grown it Lynn?
I'm an horologist but due to circumstances I won't go into I missed that the clocks went back and only did it yesterday (Tuesday) tell mum to take care especially if it's icey this winter we don't wont her having a trip back to hospital cheers
Yeah, I’ll be making sure she wears the boots with lots of grip all winter!
Your mother inspires me.
Thanks nice Lyndell, I’ll tell her!
Lovely vlog 👍Busy busy busy! Cheers Jessie 🍻😊
Busy indeed Carol! Cheers!
Fab vlog Jesse hope you enjoyed the pub 🍺
:D I did Sharon, thank you!
Привет! Ты все сделал отлично. Мне нравится твой пруд. Удачи тебе🐱👍🌻💙
Mmmmm I think you are teasing us our Jess 😂
Hahahaha
Am watching you in the shed and coveting your bottle of fairy liquid. Its hard to come by in nz!
Hahaha, thats a relic that one Julz!
Hiya Jessie, enjoyed today’s visit with you & Muma hope recovery is going well. Wow the pond a fave of mine in video’s it was like a mini island. Good to know when choosing water plants for us newbies. Ruby has her runway back lol. Cheers Luv Ontario Canada Thankyou 🐝🇨🇦
Hi Jess and Dex, sending loads of love, Kathy xxx love your vlogs Jess😘
Kathy! How exciting! Love to you and Max too. Xx
ah! We know a name now ^^
💙🌱💙
Ooh I just thought of something! Add a little bit of a fine mesh around your rake and you can make a pond net just like a pool net! Just as a temporary clean up tool 😊
I really enjoy your gardening videos. And I'm learning a lot. Thank you.🎃
Thank you!
Loved it all.🤗👍
Thank you Helen!
Jessie if you save the big trombs they start to cure out to a more butternut squash colour and they’ll keep. I often chuck overgrown courgettes through the grater attachment on the food processor and use it as bulk in chillis etc. I have sweet dumpling if you’d like me to send you some seed or do a swapsy
I was wondering if they stored okay. I know you can eat them as winter squash but wasn’t sure if you have to eat them immediately or not! Also, what do you think of the flavour of sweet dumpling? Is it yum?
@@JessieatPlot37 I’ll have to let you know! It’s still sat there in all it’s cuteness, the one and only that I got! I thought the seeds weren’t germinating so I reused the pot…then one grew! So it got put out a bit late but it was keen to fruit so think it’ll do well planted at a better earlier time. I bet they’re nice given the name and they look so weeeee cute! I’ve got 100.8kg squash from a fleet of polar bear, crown prince and marina de chioggias so will save the little one! 😂
Cheers sweetheat, see ya next week 😍
Cheers!!!
The tomatoe pumpkins were great.
Hahahaha
I managed to get a couple of packets of field beans in case you needed them but they won't go to waste, I had them last year and loved them.
Oh thank you Pauline!! Yeah, so daft, i was convinced i had picked some up last year hahahah!
My hubby uses a small fishing net to remove debris from his Koi pond. There are always so many frogs too. A shame we have to buy pond plants every year because of our winters here in south-central Indiana though. The Koi and goldfish always survive though
I find the rake easier to get the debris out of, it always gets stuck in our little pond net! Oh thats annoying about having to re-buy each year.
I love your travels and would love to see more of historic London once in a while. I will never get to travel there…I’m in the USA❤️🫶🏼🌱🌸🌺🌼
Hopefully I’ll be up and about in town this month. Especially as christmas gets close!
Love the vids! I actually repurpose old bread knives in the garden, they’re one of my fav tools to use to cut plants out of the ground 😂
A serrated edge is underestimated in the garden isn’t it!!!
Great update once again Jessie , love how you keep getting lovely produce from your allotment, my greenhouse and raised beds finished weeks ago lol , only got my Leeks, winter onions , garlic and decimated cabbage in now , I started off trying to make your 3 bin compost system but settled on one lol ,say hi to your mum for me and keep up the good work x
Thanks Jim. :) Leeks, onions and garlic is good going. And yeah, my cabbages are looking a tad defeated too!
@@JessieatPlot37 thanks Jessie , the frustration of gardening lol x
🙋 hi from Scotland ,hi Jess another fab vidio your new cage s amazing so glad to see your wee mum recoverd from her surgery and is doing so well ,what you like hunting for your beens and you did have some I thought it was only me that dud things like that ,Jess what happens to the wee allotment cat during winter ? The circuses looked amazing I am sure that was you swinging from that rope looked just like you lol 😂 Thanks for the wee trip to the garden centre take care cheers 🍷 till next time Anne from Scotland 🎃🎃☔☔
Hi Anne! Yeah, mum has fixed up so well!
Lily is quite fine over the winter, she has her little house thats very cosy and she is still looked after buy the same people!
Omg you’ve been looking for field beans for weeks! 😂
I Know! What a fool!
I found my scoop/trowel in the bird seed section of the shop-apparently they work well for scooping bird seed too 😂 When I broke my handle I went back to the bird seed area and bought another 🤩
You know, i think mine was in a non-trowel section too now i come to think of it! I’ll look a bit further afield hahahaha!
Yep treat like a butternut should change colour a bit more though just needs curing they are so big though might fill the freezer
I did cut one and use half the cut end seals and then it was fine for a week
Yeah, the size is all a bit intimidating hahahaha!
Love a harvest ❤
How funny, the van driver behind the bus was my cousin lol. 🤣
Hahahaahah! Really!?
@@JessieatPlot37 Yep, he lives in Croydon, but works all over the London District. He fits alarms 👍🤗
Treat the lpng squash like a butternut. They store really well
Ah, it was the storming i was unsure about. Thank you!
The show was all some.
It was surprisingly excellent Anna! Really enjoyed it!
Hey Jessie...you got any field beans hmmm?😅 Don't know why I'm laughing; my shed could possibly be hiding Lord Lucan and Shergar!!!😂
Hahahahahaha
Your leeks look great!
Look how nimble your mom got!!
I guess you could always use the seeds from the Tromboncinos for next year.
True!
You might find seed in the bulbous part of the trombocino jess
True Mandy!
I'm experimenting with trombon ravioli for the holidays...
Oh thats sounds good!
hey hun, nice to see your sister again ( and your boo) . The tromboncino seems they will not ripen to a state you can keep them. There are already little holes in them ( you will maybe see even some sticky fluid comming out) . Those holes are normal for courgettes at the end of the year, there season is over. If they had ripen earlier they keep . I got a few beautifull butternut coloured on my dresser .Why on your dresser Jessie? Well the rest of my pumkins are already chilling in my bedroom and one day i`m gonna buy googly eyes to scare the shit out of my hubby, just for laughs. Can`t wait to see you next week, lots of love from Belgium
wow jessie another great video you always make my week with one of your videos i sometimes watch them on my alloetment keep up the great work p.s the peppermint chard you recommened which i got some and grew is fantastic thanks for the recomendation i,ll deffo be growing that again
Can I ask is this genuine making sure you haven't been hacked
Loved the Halloween tomatoes. Very cute. Not scary at all. Really must try chicory never grown it or tried it to be honest. Might be the one to add to the list next year
❤❤❤
:)
Very good varied vlogette that was missus. Keep up the good work and get that fella involved more 😉 almost very remiss of you to not cheers us at the end !!! 👍
:D thanks Carl. Hahah, i know, i could’ve believe i had forgotten!!
Looks like circus zyair with the globe of death.
It was a surprisingly entertaining way to spend a couple of hours!
@@JessieatPlot37 it's one of the best circuses out there, the motorbike stunt is amazing
Can you give the tromboncinos to the girlies?
did you get the garlic? :-D just wondered. I had trouble finding garlic too this year, hopefully, I have awesome pensioners at my plot who let me have some of theirs. Thanx for your videos. Have a great remaining season.
No, still haven’t but I’m on a mission for it this week!
Hi Jessie, I am a coffee roaster and I have a large amount of jute coffee sacks, it such a shame to burn them. Can they be used in the garden? Paul
Hi Jessie, I need your Mum here to weed for me, thousands everywhere! Have to ask you, does your kneeler hurt your shins? I have to pad mine out with an old blanket. Mine kill me when I stand up. Maybe I've just got funny shin bones 😂😂.I planted red chicory but the slugs have decided they like it for their supper. Loved the vlog Jessie as always.OOh and by the way I met Eli and Kate in Edinburgh the other week at the Adam Frost evening. They were so nice!!
Do you have the same type of kneeler Jenny? I’ve had this one for years and its really comfy but i picked up a different style one as a replacement a few years back and it was murder!! Went back to the old one!
Ahh!! I’d love too meet up with Kate and Eli!
Jess how do you use your chard and spinach. I need some ideas for cooking and storing. Typically I steam for a few minutes and freeze.
I steam and freeze too if I’m keeping it but i use most of it fresh. I’ll try and get some more recipes up this winter!
See ya Jess in November :)
Happy November Zuza!
I thought that was a pomegranate at first. Is she going to another garden centre.
Nope, she’s sticking to doing gardening privately now!
Hey Jess just wondered what happened with your gardening spreadsheet you were working on?
Ahh Maggi! I’m still trying to get it to export as a template! It’s supposed to be so easy but there’s a problem. I’ll hopefully get it out this week!!!
@@JessieatPlot37 I'm using the latest version of excel. I went to file/export changed my xls to a template, saved it. Then went to google sheets and uploaded it. I dont know if that is what you are trying to do? If its not I'm patient.
We’re does Lil sleep at night?
Everything in my poly tunnel is smothered in white fly when I go in there it’s like a white cloud not only the tunnel but also my raised bed with runner and French beans is also smothered in white fly but to add insult to injury the leaves are also smothered in black fly.
I have pulled all the roots out of the soil in both places hoping they will get peed off when the plants go dry and not succulent.
Anybody got any idea where white fly over winter last year I had them on my orchids in the conservatory I spent weeks rubbing off every white fly and eggs off the leaves.
Lil has her own little house on another allotment.
Jeeze… what a combo. I always have problems with blackfly but not so often with the whitefly and haven’t seen a single one this year. That’s infuriating that they are in the poly…
It saddens me to see people on facebook gutting pumpkins them throwing out the actual food..argh!!
I know a guy who was in his late 20s before he found out that pumpkins were actually edible!
Its all good
People are funny.
Check out "Gardening in the North" here on youtube. she who has that channel grows Tromboncino and she cook them when they are big. I hope you get some ideas and tips for your own cooking. Love your channel, have a nice day.
How do you cook occhocha
All sorts of ways! Just de-seed them and then slice them up!
Why you aren't going to eat them? They are delicious, all that long neck pure yummy flesh. What a shame wasting them! 😔
I’ve been eating the small ones but just wanted to see how bit they got! i will eat them in the end
