  • Museum exhibits aren't just about objects; they're about text and pictures too. Adam Savage chats with Evan Keeling, graphics specialist at Smithsonian Exhibits, to learn about how he and his team create 2D elements for exhibitions, which includes some pretty amazing technology!

I am so happy that you're doing this series! I love museums, especially the Smithsonian. I love how you're showing all the opportunities there are for makers and creators in the museum and archives fields. These new technologies are bringing museum collections to people who would never have had the chance to see them, and allowing people to interact with the collections like never before. Thanks for the deep dive, Adam!

This is a great interview. At first I was surprised at how much more knowledgeable Evan is than Adam on a lot of topics, but then I realized that this is only apparent because Mr Savage is asking such pertinent questions! If this is the direction this channel is going to take, then I'm down. Adam building fascinating stuff in a fascinating manner and then his expertise being funneled into documentary-esque educational interviews is a wonderful combination.
Plus there's Norm and the podcasts and the VR coverage and the plethora of avenues that you guys explore.
Truly one of the best channels on UA-cam and a case study of new-media success. I look forward to years and years of content.

These have been wonderful and fascinating!
Working in a small museum in Waltham, MA, it's amazing how much of what the Smithsonian faces in terms of challenges and ways to solve problems are shared, even at our compact, much more scaled-down level of operation. Being that much of my job is producing graphics (though with our staff size, I find myself very much a factotum), this hits home in so many ways. My former job in the commercial field of printing had so much of the equipment and facilities they discuss here (the machine shown at 16:00 was my production baby for almost a decade), and I would kill to have access to even half of that utility at the museum!

We have a slightly older Océ Arizona 350GT flat bed UV cured printer at work to the one here and it can print on objects up to 48mm high and we've had fun experimenting printing on things like ceiling tiles, double side printing on clear perspex, even wooden doors but favourite thing was dismantling a colleagues electric guitar and printing a motif on it :)
You can print on glass and mirrors, the issue is the reflection of the UV curing lamps damages the print head meaning it needs to be replaced sooner.

I'm a digital press operator working on a flatbed inkjet press. One container of ink of the CMYK is $800 and during a shift you could easily put 6+ in. We cure each pass with UV and those badboys can withstand a Canadian winter hanging on a pole. It makes sense for a museum to not have to worry about sunlight since it's the enemy for priceless museum pieces. There aren't many windows in a museum!

Back then there were no vinyl cutters, so our walls got silkscreened signage. If you haven't held a screen vertically against a wall to print on it, you haven't lived. The thrill! Will the ink drop and make a mess on the floor? Will the print come out nicely or are we going to have to clean it up with solvents, repaint the wall, wait for the paint to dry and try again with the curator, the chief designer and a whole bunch of people breathing down our necks because we've just cost them the perfect opening for the exhibit? Oh the excitement!!
