I feel like these two hats don't do crochet justice, it's not a fair comparison in the slightest. For starters, you generally wouldn't crochet in the round for a hat unless you were making it for a baby. Classic autumn/winter hats are made by crocheting a rectangle of fabric and then stitching it together with a darting needle. I've seen some absolutely gorgeous crochet hats with a tight weave, it all depends on the weight of your yarn, the size of your needle, and what stitch you use. (Plus I'd argue the most basic stitch in crochet is the single crochet, as it's the one taught to beginners. Double crochet does tend to have more holes, since you're effectively just making taller stiches.)
And that's not even getting into the absolutely incredible patterns you can make with crochet. If you're really skilled, you can make lace and doilies and other intricate, dainty things. That's why crochet was first created actually: it was an old societal norm that women who were less wealthy would knit due to practicality, and those better off would crochet to make decorations and give them something to do. So I'd argue that crochet, done well, can look just as good as knit.

I agree. The crochet hat looks very basic compared to the many hats I've made. I have made a few hats starting with a rectangle and sewing it, but I prefer crocheting in rounds because I suck at sewing and making pompoms. In my opinion, crochet is more versatile. There is more variety in crocheting than in knitting. And you are less likely to drop a stitch and have to start ALL over. Also, Tunisian crochet, although I really hate it since I can't do it, looks like the awesome love child of Knitting and Crocheting.

My goodness, I had no idea that crochet used to be fancier than knitting. I’ve tried both, but never got along with knitting as well as with crochet. Those 2 needles, the many stitches hanging from them, those 3 double point needles on a round piece that almost make my eyes pop out... 😭😭😭. the hardest project I was able to knit was a poncho, which I only finished to prove that I could. But eventually I gave up knitting and assumed my crochet preference, so sue me 😤. That said I slobber all over those intricate lacy knitting patterns that I will never make 😕. But it’s ok. I will always have my hooks 😋

Thank you. I tried knitting when still a teenager and never really cared for it. Later tried crochet, liked it but wasn't able to afford it until lately so I'm still a beginner as such but the hats aren't a fair comparison by any means. Thanks for that great history lesson!! 😉

Im only trying to learn to knit to make this scarf I really like. I've been crocheting for 6 years and picked up the skill from my grandmother, so I'm a bit biased towards it haha! Hopefully I can catch on to this too! And I agree, that hat does not do crocheting justice. It sounds like she is a bit more favorable to knitting, but to each their own.

If you want anything close to a usable answer to your question of "Which do you prefer..." you must provide a picture of the SAME pattern using the SAME yarn not two completely different styles.

If you compare a single crochet stitch (instead of double) to a standard knit stitch, the size comparison/speed of workup is much more comparable. I would agree crochet is easier and more beginner friendly, but knit is better for making things last and stretching. Personally I prefer crochet because it's more convenient and easier to stop and go, I find it overall way more versatile than knitting. Plus I can use Tunisian crochet to get a knit look if I'm really going for that :)

I do both... it totally depends on the project... I do prefer knitted fabrics, when it comes to hats and other wearables, but I reach fir a hook, when it comes to blankets, Afghans, and shawls... Scarves can go either way... I just learned to crochet the Granny Triangle Shawl, and have become addicted to making shawls... I can crochet a very large shawl in no time.. knitting a shawl of the same size would take me forever. I can whip out a crocheted preemie/newborn hat in about 30 minutes... but I nearly always knit them, because I love the way they look.
I especially love to knit hats.. I really don’t like the way crocheted hats look..but I am not as relaxed as I am when crocheting... I have serious vision issues, so correcting a knitting mistake is a nightmare for me...
What I really dislike is how certain knitters...and LYS’s.... are so quick to be put crocheters down.. They are so snobbish...
Bith knitting and crocheting have their place in our fiber universe... They are both crafts worthy of being handed down, from one generation to another.

Some things look better crocheted, some better knitted.
Crocheting is far more versatile than knitting (FACT): There are so many more different looks/patterns/stitches with crochet.

As for not watching, by the time I realized the comparison was unfair I was already watching. You do know you can't *UN-see* something, right? Duh. LOL Crochet garments tend to get a bad rap when compared to knitted ones. I didn't think the hat styles chosen helped. (I do both by the way. And I like both.) And why are you cape-ing for Nervous Knitter? All feedback is not going to 100 percent positive all the time. I actually thought mine was constructive criticism to note that a hat that looks as if it was meant for a child compared to one that wasn't as cartoonish wasn't a fair comparison. Maybe if she does another comparison video, she'll keep that in mind. Wasn't trying to hurt her feelings. If I did, I'm sorry. Making videos and getting all kinds of feedback is probably not easy. And folks can be very mean. That's why I DON'T make videos and never will.

I have tried for years and years and I cannot needle knit. Some things I loom knit, some things I crochet. I'm a recovering yarn addict and because of so many types of things you can create I always have a project to work on. Wow, poor knitting seems to lose on so many aspects, but what it wins though is its look, that's what matters for knitting I guess, and the tears and sweats part.
I'm a knitter and for some strange reason, I find crocheting hard to grasp; I grew up seeing my mum crocheting and tried to learn it but never grasped it, but I picked up knitting myself and I was hooked ever since. I prefer to have live stitches for me to know where to put in my needles, whereas for crochet, I find it hard to keep track. I only know basic crochet to aid my knitting and I do agree with the things you said about crocheting.
I too prefer the look of knitting, the fabrics are softer and more flowing compared to crocheted fabrics.
I do wish I know crochet a bit better to be able to have a fairer comment, because I actually love the look of Tunisian crochet, that I can grasp pretty quickly. I guess some people are born to be a knitter, just a knitter, and others crocheters, heheheh. Anyway, we need both, they coexist for a reason, to compliment each other, where one is lacking in one aspect the other covers.

I didn't knit for years because it was so much easier to crochet. My mom taught me how to knit, but I never kept up with it because it was before the internet and I wasn't around other people who knit. I started knitting in earnest January 2017 and haven't looked back. I love it! Now, I knit and crochet. You crochet mostly the way I do except for the way you hold your yarn. Whatever works for each individual is what counts. Right now, I am knitting my first scarf for my hubby using the brioche stitch...just one color. I will attempt 2 color brioche at a different time. I knit Continental, so found the brioche stitch very easy. I just need to find a good video on putting in a lifeline. Thanks for doing this video!!!

I tried knitting a blanket and it took me 1 month to do a 12x12 square. I was being extra careful because I didn't want holes. this is my first "how to video" on the subject and I have never even considered doing it until today.
I was watching CBS Sunday morning with Jane Pauley and she was interviewing Julia Roberts and Jane pulled out her knitting and Julia looked at it and said something like ..... oh Jane, you have a very tight stitch and proceeded to do some knitting on Janes project while they finished the interview and that "hooked me". hahaha ..... what grabbed my heart was that Julia put a little bit of herself into Janes project right there on the spot and there is something about the ability to have someone contribute to something that has literally, as you mentioned, my "blood, sweat and tears " in it!!!! It seems like a wonderful opportunity to do something for myself or for someone else that brings me joy and happiness!!
So after my heart had been touched, I looked up videos And your video was the first one that popped up! It was longes of the 3 recommended but I liked that about your video because I wanted someone who took it serious. And wow, Your video was a joy to listen to and it was incredibly fun and educational! I actually busted out laughing several times and thats always a wonderful feeling. I'm on my way to amazon to order the crochet needle or hook , hahah not sure what its called ( yet ) and I will be back to your channel to learn more and participate.
Thanks for helping me fall in love with crochet and knitting. I will follow your recommendation and learn crochet first. best wishes to you and everyone who reads this!

My mother taught me how to knit when I was 8. I still don’t know how to crochet, but I sometimes knit using simple patterns and I’m okay at it.

I do both. I love to crochet more because it’s faster. However I will switch to knit for some projects such as hat. No way I would knit a scarf it’s way faster to crochet. I also loom sometimes but it is a bit limiting

I JUST started crocheting and I’m self taught via UA-cam videos. I did it for a hot second as a kid but was too antsy to stick with it. I’m 22 and I have generalized anxiety disorder and depression and it’s so far been insanely relaxing. I prefer the look of knitting but crocheting is much more doable for me plus a metal crochet hook at Walmart cost me a dollar plus $4 for a ball of fluffy blanket yarn 🧶

Most people who start knitting get frustrated and reading a pattern can be a pain. But once kitting is mastered it does get easier through time. It always best to practice new stiches before implementing into a pattern. Best of luck.

I have been crocheting for a little over a year and LOVE IT!!! I have officially decided that I want to learn how to knit. Crocheting was frustrating but a wonderful experience! I enjoy it immensely! I am so nervous about knitting! lol
I love the look of crocheted hats and scarves but as far as actual clothing is concerned, like socks or shirts, I believe knitting looks cleaner and more beautiful to me. I love making my own things! I want to challenge myself and need as many videos as I can get, so thank you for posting this! :)

I think you got one point wrong, crochet actually takes up more yarn than knitting because we're literally binding off every single stitch, that's why it looks so dense, whereas knitting is interlocking loops and binding off to complete the whole project. That's why knitting works are thin and airy.
I somehow found knitting easier to understand than crochet. I don't know why. I watched my mum crocheting since young but never grasped it, but when I taught myself knitting, it clicked. I love working with two needles or more in my hands.
I still don't get the full concept of crochet yet even though it's actually not that hard. I do Tunisian crochet though.

Check out fair isle crochet using the waistcoat stitch. Looks very nice and knit-like. I know double crochets are basic and quick, so I get it, but idk if they're the right tool for the job with a hat, so it's a funny comparison. Tunisian crochet is of course also very nice.
I can knit (not expertly but I don't forget how after a break), but I just don't like it as much and that matters more to me than how much I like the result. I'm really curious about the spark that some people have for it. Like what makes it click? I haven't found the answer yet. :)

You can knit amiguri, it just takes longer. It does make the toys softer, though. Knitting is better for bigger stuffed animals/toys imo, whereas crochet is good for quick small ones that have more structure.

@@SlickRicShow people have actually experimented on this and found that it depends on the stitch. Crochet often uses a bit more yarn, but there are some knit stiches that use more than regular crochet. There's never a huge margin though.
