    Haven't watched yet but I always believed that although the crochet is faster, it takes up about 1/3 yarn more than knitting. I think maybe the specific stitch would make it vary. I would weigh them on a kitchen scale scale.

  • @Stephlovesnapping
    @Stephlovesnapping 6 років тому +27

    You could weigh the finished pieces on a kitchen scale (in grams or ounces) assuming you used the same yarn to do all 3 samples. ♥️
    Just guessing but I think knitting takes up more yarn...

    Actually it depends on the pattern stitch you use and the size of your hook and knitting. But i believe knitting is more longer to do and more yarn i knitted for yrs before i started crocheting. But 💘 both!

    Thank you for sharing! I figured it would be knitting because one time I tried to create a pattern and started with a crochet sample. Then once I tried the knit sample I noticed I was needing to use more of the small sample ball of yarn I had. Either way, knitter for life!

    the knitting used more yarn because it was garter stitch. Garter stitch scrunches up creating a longer fabric

      I was a bit surprised that she just used garter stitch in the knit sample. I would have used stockinette stitch as a second sample. I did a test which I wrote down as a reply to my own comment further down.

    I agree with a previous poster that you could weigh the swatches if you're using the same yarn for all the swatches.

    I was going to ask about the size hooks and needles. But its the cast on that is the extra amount of yarn probably

      Crochet also has a "cast on," it's the chain foundation. But I don't think that is the reason, I think it's because it takes more rows of knitting to increase the height of a project than it does if you were to crochet it

    • @charleanemmasmom
      @charleanemmasmom 6 років тому

      @@jaredrosa3415 you dont have to do the chain in crochet though, you can do a foundation row.

    Hmmm that surprises me, I always assumed crocheting took less yarn! Also, I do agree that you could have used a scale like a lot of the comments…. But the way you did it, worked just fine, it still gave us a great sense of how much yarn we need for each! Thank you!

    Love crocheting and knitting and this is a good idea, but it is like comparing apples and melons because crocheting and knitting are two different techniques (actually had a weaver comparing weaving with knitting when it came to time, materials and effort). The test could use some more work to be more accurate and fair. First of all using the same yarn and the same sized hooks and needles, which you did. Then I'd suggest using regular stockinette stitch for the knit sample rather than garter stitch. Or, use slip stitch for the crochet sample to be comparable to garter stitch. The garter stitch is stretchy, single and double crochet aren't (unless you do it in the back loop). It would be like using slip stitch to see if it took more yarn than a stockinette knitted square. Hard to say which uses more yarn since they are so different, and it really depends on the stitch, tension, yarn, hooks and needles.
    By the way, I can't thank you enough for the ten stitch blanket videos. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my own creations and couldn't stand that it didn't look the same on both sides, but with your videos I got my reversible ten stitch blanket done.
    ETA: Come to think about it. A slip stitch rib and a regular 1x1 (knit 1, purl 1) rib is very similar so that might be a good way to test it. Will do it myself when I get home. Of course, getting the size is trickier. =/

      I was not happy with just using the garter stitch as a knit sample so I did regular stockinette stitch because it is the most common one and behaves similar to sc, hdc and dc stitches. For anyone interested here are the results of my test (which took much longer than I planned it would take). I used some cheap acrylic yarn and 4 mm knitting needles and hook. I made 5x5 cm squares to the very best of my ability. I blocked the samples when I measured them to get the correct size (which took a lot of time and a lot of frogging) and didn't stretch the yarn when measuring. I laid down the yarn and kept it relaxed, but straight when measuring.
      Crochet samples:
      *Slip stitch crochet in the back loop to mimic garter stitch. 11 chains, 10 ss in the backloop. 15 rows. = 4,37 m (14,33 feet)
      *Single crochet sample. 9 chains, 8 sc(through both loops). 9 rows. = 4,78 m (15,68 feet)
      *Half double crochet sample. 9 chains, 7 hdc (through both loops). 6 rows. = 3,27 m (10,72 feet)
      *Double crochet sample. 11 chains, 8 dc (through both loops). 4 rows. = 3,26 m (10,69 feet)
      Knit samples:
      *Garter stitch. Cast on 10 with slip knot cast on. 18 rows and regular bind off. = 3,37 m (11,12 feet)
      *Stockinette stitch. Cast on 11 with slip knot cast on. 15 rows and regular bind off. = 3,04 m (9,97 feet)
      I wasn't too surprised with the results. It really comes down to tension, yarn, needles, hooks and most importantly... which stitch is used. Crochet in general uses more yarn compared to knitting. I was a bit surprised though that HDC and DC stitches used pretty much the same amount of yarn. I did measure several times over because it really surprised me. Maybe it is the way I crochet the stitches. I tend to crochet the DC fairly loosely compared to HDCs.

      @@LovelySuccubi wow that's interesting! Whenever I don't have enough yarn and a pattern requires a double crochet, I use half double instead and for me it uses less yarn than the double crochet!! Guess it depends on tension..

      It does, if you were to crochet and knit a top by pattern, the crochet pattern will call for more yarn than the knit version. The reason being is that in order to make a stitch in crochet it takes more yarn even if you're making a single crochet. Ex. to make a sc you put the hook through, pull up yarn, 2 pcs of yoh, pull yarn through both pcs of yarn, your single crochet. To make one knit or purl stitch, you put the needle through, wrap yarn around the needle and pull it off the 2nd needle. Knit stitch or purl stitch made.

  • @sweetmelisamakesmore5344

    Interesting... It always seems like on knitcrate and when I watch the videos the patterns for the knit are always bigger so I just assumed it took less. I think maybe if you look at the ball band when you knit you use a a smaller hook size than the crochet hook calls for on the yarn. Hopefully that made sense. So I'm not sure the experiment worked out right. Great idea, though and thank you. I always wondered my self, I was just too lazy to find out. This at least gives me an idea. You look beautiful by the way.😃

    Very interesting! You COULD do a comparison of two similar projects in the same yarn, one in knitting and one in crocheting, then weigh each finished project. No frogging needed! 😊

    • @missmishpot
      @missmishpot 10 місяців тому

      @@TheNervousKnitter I’m not sure what you’d want to make as the test project, and my knowledge of knitting is pretty limited to basic knits and purls 😬, but my guess is something single crochet would be similar usage to basic knit or purl stitch. HOWEVER, I don’t think you should be limited to that really. It could be any two similar pieces you’d have fun making. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable in both crafts sees this and can offer a more informed suggestion. Maybe there’s a smallish project out there for a scarf, hat, or shawl that’s offered in both art forms?

    Crochet. If you were to crochet and knit a top by pattern, the crochet pattern will call for more yarn than the knit version. The reason being is that in order to make a stitch in crochet it takes more yarn even if you're making a single crochet. Ex. to make a sc you put the hook through, pull up yarn, 2 pcs of yo.h, pull yarn through both pcs of yarn, your single crochet. To make one knit or purl stitch, you put the needle through, wrap yarn around the needle and pull it off the 2nd needle. Knit stitch or purl stitch made. So by just making one stitch in crochet, you've used twice the yarn as in making a knit or purl stitch.

    I usually love tight knitting and crocheting mainly because I make beanies using a 1x1 rib stitch and practical stuff like coin purses and bags respectively. I think the tighter the sturdier for my crochet projects and the tighter the stretchier for my ribbed beanies. Yes, I consume more yarn, but I think I get better quality for what I make.

    I'ved made a comment on her other video that Knitting consumes less yan and Crochet uses more yarn, ans I used a cap as a reference. But tbh, it really depends on the project that you're making and the stitches is also a huge factor on how fast it consumes a yarn ball/skein.

Then I weighed each square on my digital kitchen scales. Surprise, surprise the results were exactly the same as yours. Knitting really does take more yarn 😀

    This wasn't very fair because you can tell that you had really small gauge for the knitting which takes more yarn but your crochet was a lot looser. So obviously it isn't a good comparison

  • @VLinas

    Is that the same weight yarn and same needle size width ?

  • @tinahairston6383
    @tinahairston6383 6 років тому

    Thank you for this! I was on another blogger's chat the other night and she along with a good many of her followers kept saying that crocheting took more yarn than knitting but like you said on your other comparison video, it takes longer to finish a knitted project than it does a crocheted one of the same item. So it stands to reason that the longer it takes for you to make an item, the more yarn you're going to need to get it to that finish line. I'm not sure you could've done it any other way, given that all the factors were as equal as possible (same hook/needle size, same yarn weight and same tension since you did all the swatches instead of another crafter doing one), other than making a larger test object say like a baby beanie and unravel them and measure. Personally you've answered what I've always thought, crocheting takes up less time so it makes sense that it would take less yarn. But everything is relative so...lol!
