People misunderstand this masterpiece of filmmaking. All you have to do is a heroic dose of shrooms while watching it with one eye covered and hanging upside down like a bat. Once you have those basic steps covered this film is a delight and it makes total sense.

Those metaphors annoy me to no end. The U.S. is not going to fall like Rome. In the modern world, weak countries do not fall. They are still around. Secondly, there are no Germanic or Slavic barbarians at our borders.

I think it's a great illustration of one of the ways an artist can grow old (the bad one): instead of reaching for an ever refined, ever more ethereal version of what inspired you to become a filmmaker and an artist in the first place (Once Upon A Time In America is a great example), you get ossified in your old man preoccupations ("kheh kheh, kids these days!") that are 30 years out of date, you execute it with expressive means that are 30 years out of date, and there's no one to say 'no' to you. Has anyone read about the crushing pressure Ridley Scott was under making "Bladerunner"? Outright sabotage by the crew. Here? Nothing. Art needs constraints, needs pressure. And vitality, rather than bombast and old man wheezing.
Another good example of an artist growing old well is Scorsese with Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese tells a story he never told before, from a perspective which isn't fully his own, while at the same time reflecting on themes he tackled in so many of his previous films.
My overall theory of why all great directors make garbage in the second half of their career- no collaboration, no other talented people, nobody to say, "no". George Lucas Spielberg Ron HOward Orson Welles Billy Friedkin notable exceptions: Kubrick and Cohen Bros.
