During WWII, Mr Durante was touring for the USO. He only had time to perform about 15 minutes of his material. When he got on stage, he sang, played, danced and joked his heart out for the troops for 40 minutes. After his final bow, he rushed off stage. His manager asked him why he performed for so long. Durante said "I saw two soldiers, one who lost his left arm, and one who lost his right arm, sitting together, so they could both clap their hands. I Figured, those brave guys did their best. So giving them my best was the least I could do." What a classy guy.
Jimmy Durante brings tears to my eyes. I remember watching his show on TV, and of course, growing up being teased myself, for having a big nose, I can relate to him!
I only just discovered your comment because I showed 'Frosty the Snowman' to my students today, and was doing a search on Jimmy. Merry Christmas and God bless you.
I was a little kid (born in 58) when I use to watch his tv show. I will never forget how he signed off each time, "Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!"
When young, school kids made terrible fun of his nose, from what I have read. He took a "negative," changed the perspective on it, and made people love him, in part, because of his particular physical characteristic. What a great lesson. Nobody in show business had a bad word to say about James Francis Durante.
I have a huge "block" on my bookmarks devoted to varios performances of Durante. The saddest part is.we shall never see an entertainer of his calibre again. He was CLASS personified.
I saw Jimmy Durante in concert back in 1966 and he brought a joy to the room that was almost visible. The night before, I was at a reception for him and met him briefly.; As soon as he walked into the room, he gathered a bunch of us around the piano and we sang all kinds of good old songs, including "Inka-Dinka-Doo" while he played. It remains one of my very favorite memories!
He really was very good and got a nice shout-out in the Rudi Blesh - Harriet Janis book "They All Played Ragtime". Here he is with his jazz band in 1920. He's playing piano in this: ua-cam.com/video/R1Zyw0Wmm7I/v-deo.html
Jimmy Durante was considered to be the one of the most loved entertainers. He was also a talented musician - and he made movies. I'm not sure of the years, but he also had a successful TV show. My parents were big fans, as were most Americans. Other entertainers sang his Inka Dinka Doo, as a tribute. ( Like Ann-Margret.) Anyway, he is part of the American culture.
no this is not from the "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" this is from a movie that 2 sisters are trying to make it into the music world by wanting to open up their own dance room with Music Dinner and Dance and for the life of me i can not remember the Name of the movie ......
I could watch entertainers like this all day! As a kid I saw all these acts on TV (Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, The Mills Bros., Sid Caesar, Dean Martin, the list is endless) but never realized how great they were. But it is evident now by what's "entertaining" us today! What garbage!
I am truly amazed by some of the negative comments I see here. Needless to say, I have a far different opinion. With TV and radio, Jimmy was a regular part of our family. I will always be thankful I had a chance to see him in person at the no longer existent Valley Music Hall . . By the way, you guys with your negative comments, How come I've never heard of you? Were you on stage? TV? Radio? What was your contribution toward making entertainment better??? Yeah. I thought so. You can't do it yourself so you knock someone who could. Sit down and be quiet.
Hi, Richard. Well you'll never hear a negative comment about this from me. I vote "yes"for this show. And I have publicly entertained a lot. I play the piano. We both have excellent taste in entertainment. Those who don't like this show don't know what they're missing. Hooray for good shows! (R.H.)
ONE OF THE REAL AND TRUE GREATS OF ALL TIME ... SIMPLY MAGNIFICENT AND ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS IN EVERYTHING HE EVER APPEARED IN ... FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNAWARE, MRS. CALABASH WAS HIS NAME FOR HIS DECEASED FIRST WIFE, JEANNE OLSEN.
Jerry Johnson I think the reason is that each entertainer worked on their own persona. They did not act in a comedy, they were the comedy. The Schnoz was the Schnoz and nobody else. Pure honesty.
Harry McNicholas I agree. By the same token, back then even if you had similar acts; i.e...Burns and Allen, Ozzie and Harriet, Jack Benny...there was something, maybe just one thing, that made them different than one another...also, when your comedy / writing stands the test of time; Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, shows like 'Barney Miller,' that's more proof right there. Thank you for your reply, Mr McNichols. Blessings
In my outspoken opinion, Jimmy is likable and watchable. I wish he was my uncle. But everyone has different tastes in entertainment. That's why there is such a wide variety of entertainment in this world!
I remember the evenings sitting around the TV and watching the variety shows and old sitcoms that didn't deal with what was wrong with the world, but instead made you laugh and feel good about the world! That is the reason that I seldom watch TV any more!
@ Vintagejules: we do have some great performers today but, in my opinion we don't have the ' caliber ' of performers of yester year. They all got old and passed on. But, we can still see many of our old favorites thanks to You Tube. Yes, maybe some way someone will bring it back. Lets hope.
Brings back nights during WWII. hearing inka dinka doo not old enuf to really appreciate Jimmy's efforts in the USO (or know what the USO was) back then.
For some reason, his name sprang to mind just now. I remember his gravelly voice on tv when I was young and also recall Eric Morecambe doing a gag with a paper cup held in his mouth and with a gravelly voice singing 'Sittin' at my piano'.
Jimmy Durante loved his audiences...loved people and you always felt like he was entertaining you alone..Be happy in heaven Smiler Grogan because you would not like the disgusting so called entertainment in America today...Jimmy, we loved you because it was easy to do!! And we that were lucky enough to know you ...miss you every day...Heaven is a better place with you there.God knows!
Herry Monster's voice actor based his voice on jim Durante...i didnt notice before til now Jim doesn't just have Herry Monster's voice but Herry's nose shape too...i wonder if Herry Monster's voice actor saw the muppet's nose and decided "i'm gonna make him speak like jim Durante."
I just revisited this wonderful video clip, and it is so entertaining. Also it must be mentioned that was some excellent trumpet playing by Harry James. Wow!! I don't know what year this is or what movie this is, but I will try to find that info.

Grew up on this, man. Mom and Dad loved him. Loved how my parents shared their 2:30 music with us. 6 kids to this day. I like to listen to this music.
There will never be another Durante--a beloved true original!
Jimmy Durante tried to measure his charisma, once. The machine burst into flames.
A charisma unmatched since.....

Sounds like a great experience. Wish I had been there, too.
Wow! Thank you for sharing!
Comedy will never be like this again. Priceless.
I grew up watching Jimmy Durante old movies and guest appearances. Was so sad when he passed. One of the greats.
Cole Porter rated Jimmy among the best in the lyrics of "you're the top", and he was absolutely right. Thanks for posting this
"That beat was given to me by Bing Crosby and he don't want it back!"... Thanks Bing Crosby❤
"That note was given to me by Bing Crosby - and was he happy to get rid of it!" LOL
Jimmy Durante is one of the greatest piano players of all time. And He Made It Look Easy!!
He really was very good and got a nice shout-out in the Rudi Blesh - Harriet Janis book "They All Played Ragtime". Here he is with his jazz band in 1920. He's playing piano in this: ua-cam.com/video/R1Zyw0Wmm7I/v-deo.html
How can you not love Jimmy??? He was magnificent!!!!!!!
When we lost Jimmy, the whole world cried out, "It's a catastastroke!"
Love this man's energy. Very charismatic!
This song just popped into my head, and wanted to see it. Thank god we’ve got clips like this to see these fun performances.
Jimmy fantastico y su orquesta maravillosa!!!
Always puts a smile on my face!
Durant was a great talent. A true star of stage, screen, and television.

Mr. Durante illustrated the difference between performer and entertainer. His kind are gone.
One of his movies: It Happened in Brooklyn....with Frank Sinatra... A real treat!
He's not a comedian, he's an entertainer. He sings, he gets laughs, he does it all.
and don't forget, he can play piano, too!
@@WSenator1that's piany in "Jimmy" speak.
He just made everyone feel like smilin'
"Good old Smiler... everybody's friend."
From it's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World!

This is from the movie "Two Girls and a Sailor" released in 1944.
Jimmy was delightful! What class.
I was young when his show was on TV, I really miss those days, Jimmy Durante was one of a kind entertainer. He is missed.
Jimmy Durante was one of a kind. Always good for a laugh and ready to entertain.
My dad worked with him before I'm proud to say. I love this type of entertainment.
I'll always remember him saying, "Good night Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are. "
I loved watching old movies with with Jimmy Durante in them he was an awesome person.
They just don't make movies like that anymore .
The parts where he says "That's not a trumpet!" get me every time!
+Chespinoid MMMMH!!
Truly a classic man.
whenever my mood needs improving, i watch this-it always works!
I love Jimmy Durante! That`s never comes again!
Wow this tune makes me feel so ALIVE! :)
I almost forgot him... Amazingly fantastic... I played this over and over amazing....
" Good night Mrs. Calabash, where ever you are"
FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNAWARE, MRS. CALABASH WAS HIS NAME FOR HIS DECEASED FIRST WIFE, JEANNE OLSEN.
Durante was one of a very special kind.
"Those were the days, my friend, / We thought they'd never end". But they did.
Harry James really rocked that trumpet! JD was awesome too.
I had so much admiration for Jimmy Durante , I hated and was appalled of the scene in, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" of him kicking the bucket !
Goodnight Mrs Calabash wherever you are!

+Richard Skola ...Snozzal Durante is an icon!
I quite agree with you, Richard.
Jimmy Durante was a genius: comedian, singer, songwriter, jazz piano player.
Hi, Richard. Well you'll never hear a negative comment about this from me.
I vote "yes"for this show. And I have publicly entertained a lot. I play the piano. We both have excellent taste in entertainment. Those who don't like this show don't know what they're missing.

I'm at a loss to find those "negative comments". I think that you're just Click baiting.

Love this from greedy 😅😊
This MY GREAT UNCLE 🎉😂💯
The Golden Age of comedy...nice.

Timeless!
Phil Hartman "Just shut up and do Durante!!!"
Michael J. Fox "YOU do Durante!!"
In my outspoken opinion, Jimmy is likable and watchable. I wish he was my uncle. But everyone has different tastes in entertainment. That's why there is such a wide variety of entertainment in this world!

Can't help but smile
music had class back then
Wish entertainment now was like it was then! When did we get away from all of the great stuff? Maybe someone will bring it back!
I remember the evenings sitting around the TV and watching the variety shows and old sitcoms that didn't deal with what was wrong with the world, but instead made you laugh and feel good about the world! That is the reason that I seldom watch TV any more!

People try to bring it back, but the people who want it don't bother to go out and look for it or support it.
Very entertaining Jimmy Durante. Saw this from the movie Greedy starring Michael J Fox.
I love this song by the schnoz

Whenever the epic Gilgamesh is brought up, I think of this song.
He's tiny, he's homely, he's bald, he's awkward and he really can't sing. So why is this so much fun to watch?
Awesome!
Great showman
Class Act all the way !!!! 2:25
Greatness....
still class A.1
Who is the piano player in the Harry James band?
Looks easy. Jimmy would rehearse until every one else was ready to drop. He was dedicated to rehearsal, rehearsal & then rehearsal again.
"Everybody wantsta get into diact!" Rest peacefully, Jimmy.
love jimmy d
Anyone know what movie this came from? ANS: "Two Girls and a Sailor" 1944.
Did anyone notice it said it was published in 1969 on UA-cam
Gilgamesh's lament for Enkidu
Anyone else here after watching 'Greedy'?
Could any entertainer possibly be more wonderful?
I like very much
I just revisited this wonderful video clip, and it is so entertaining. Also it must be mentioned that was some excellent trumpet playing by Harry James. Wow!! I don't know what year this is or what movie this is, but I will try to find that info.
