Fantastic place, done the Summer and Winter Solstice's at Stonehenge, but one of the best places I went to to celebrate my Pagan roots was on top of Pen Y Fan (Tallest Mountain in South Wales) when around an ancient Bronze age cairn on the summit, dozens of people started to chant as the Sun rose across the countryside below, I'm not religious or even spiritual but that was a mind blowing experience. Main stream religions may have taken a foothold in the UK (It's declining now) but it was so good to see, especially the further West from London you go, that there are still people who hang onto those ancient beliefs.

I went to Stonehenge a couple of years ago they only had the lintels up, doesn't look like any more work has been done since, is it a problem with planning permission, or a problem getting bricklayers at this rate it will be another 2500 years before it is finished.

Good to know it’s an important Neolithic site. The good news is that the UN and the British state don’t feel the need to “preserve” the other, often older and more untouched henges around Britain. Often far more intricate and ornate, covering a greater expanse, people are permitted to interact in a far more tactile manner, closer to, with access across often private land to delight in native contemplation. The people here seem to need to stake a claim to this place. And are permitted on one day a year (perhaps the other solstices are gathered for) to attend a place that belongs to us all. Normally paying £35- to walk a mile to observe from a distance. For free? I am reminded of the deliberate termination of the Summer festival at Stonehenge, forty years ago. As a young man I savoured the unique freedom of British existence gathering to celebrate summer. A more free, yet lacking of intimidation experience is difficult to imagine. People did as they wished without harming others. People got naked, if they so chose. They selected whatever intoxicants they wished, although opiates were NOT tolerated. An understanding the majority concurred with. People could attend and listen at up to five different stages to people’s music, or they could jam by themselves at first, to find a hundred strangers gathering to play their music together. And people could lean, sit, or wander through the stones. In those days, people celebrated the DAWN of the Solstice, with the gradual increase in atmosphere and expectation through the night. The climax was of course the sunrise. Hawkwind playing to welcome the sun standing ON the stones. And NO HARM was done. This SHADOW of a celebration is a symptom of the fall of Britain to corporate government. Like the pathetic pale imitation of Caribbean carnival exhibited at Notting Hill, people are permitted to gather in daylight hours, mill around DESPERATE for meaning in their “celebration”, and get moved on. Nothing to see here, is the message “our” state apparatchiks coerce. And we are shown how wonderful it all is by corporate media, bearing witness not to anything of value, but to our imprisonment. A lone woman giving “legitimacy” trying to describe a communal gathering is just sad. Let’s hope we will be permitted access by “the custodian of the stones” in future.
It looks like an amazing experience. And as for those Stop Oil people, while I totally agree with the need to wake people up to the evils of Big Oil and the need for people to recognize and do something about climate change, this kind of vandalism is not the way. I find it annoying, destructive and counter-productive.
Stone Henge was rebuilt in 1958, prior to that the stones lay flat in the feild, the present structure is just someone's idea of how they MIGHT have looked.
