Unfortunately people like me need fragrance free self care items. Body soaps, shampoos, face lotion, everything. I break out in hives and can even have life threatening reactions to most scents. And essential oils don't count as fragrance free in my life, I can only tolerate lavender essential oil in products from experience. The rest cause the same reactions as "unnatural fragrance". Fragrance free products are super important!
Other than people like me, there's people with eczema and those with sensitive skin who need the fragrance free products. I have to buy a $17 conditioner (which unfortunately isn't cruelty free but it's literally the only one I can tolerate). I wish more things were fragrance free. But fragrance definitely isn't dangerous to most people! There should be options that are fragrance free. But if people want fragrance and they aren't sensitive go ahead!

The issue with cosmetic fragrance is that you may not have a reaction until way later on down the road. A lot of people say “I don’t have a problem with fragrance.” Unfortunately this statement is meaningless because fragrance allergies and sensitization can be a delayed process. You may have imperceptible damage that occurred because of fragrance use. The issue is that fragrance serves absolutely no functional purpose in skincare. It’s just a sensorial additive.

Single use glass can be pretty bad for the environment, they have to take the sand from the environment and it’s pretty energy intensive, even if you recycle it because glass needs to be heated to 1700 degree C to melt. - - w a s h i n g + r e u s e systems + durable design (so design thicker bottles that can be reused, not paper thin etc)
      - - recycle everything in country (so not just "shoving it to country 'x' " using bunker fueled ships )
      - - gasify/pyrolyse what can't be recycled further,
      - Proper sourcing
      - -use bio-petrochemistry (so algae/lignocellulistic biomass -> biocrude -> petrochemicals + plastics_ )
Here i go ranting, but the issue is the using of cheap petrolium plastic, the huge amount of shipping and spilling ( "mermaid tears" are spills of plastic pellets) / improper disposal ( l a n d f i l s),
Plastic saves mass in shipping, makes logistics workers' life's easier (snapple bottles make h e a v y boxes), and allows for crazy good seals.

A lot of EU brands will claim to not be tested on animals, even thought it's already illegal in the EU to sell a product that is. IMO i don't think cruelty free is the be all and end all, there are brands like L'oreal who work with the Chinese government on alternative testing methods for animal testing in hopes of a ban there. Most of the brands that are cruelty free are just too small to be sold in territories where you have to test on animals. I think these things aren't really talked about because the bloggers who make money from recommending cruelty free products are the people trying to educate others on the issue.

The suspicious 6 that drunk elephant is a bit iffy, for example they say no "bad" alcohols, ignoring the fact that concentration of the "bad" alcohols as well as what ingredients they're used with (humectants like glycerin for example) have a massive affect what the final product is like. They're also against "chemical" sunscreens because they think they cause break outs and are sensitising based on no evidence at all. The issue with this is that many people prefer organic (chemical) sunscreens as they are less likely to leave a white cast and arbitrarily limiting what sunscreens people can use just means they're less likely to use them. Also there are lots of stories of their customers reps telling people that basically if they're having skin issues with one of their products and they're using products from another brand alongside, its probably the other brands products causing that issue and you should stick to just drunk elephant products.

I recently saw someone selling a “clean beauty” MLM on Instagram saying it’s pricey but you barely ever have to buy it because hers has lasted over a year. YIKES. Cosmetics with preservatives shouldn’t be used that long, much less ones lacking it!

With a pandemic raging, I have been thinking about different priorities for skincare (a visit to the derm to fix a DIY gone awry seems like a very bad idea). My elderly mom had a bad mask reaction that exposed blood vessels on her thin, coumadin'd skin. Aloe irritated & I was going to do a DIY or a clean lotion, then got smart, asked the pharmacist, and petrol-laden Aquaphor fixed it in days. Messing with "clean" could have led to more hospitalization - she was in extreme pain & it kept triggering BP spikes.

I use Ethique shampoo bars because I LOVE how it works on my hair. I've tried a few different products and it really works well. And the mascara I use is ... Wait gotta get it from the other room ... Pacifica Highest Lash. I bought that last one twice and I love how it doesn't stink or make my eyes itchy. But ... the second one I got flakes more than the first so I suspect soon I'll be on the lookout for something new.
Never heard about Druken Elephant. I would be very much interested in more videos like this. Most helpful.
But back to Ethique shampoo bars. I have long hair and I just like this product. Though these come from far away so there's that too. I shampoo bar lasts me 3 to 4 months. I have long hair but I don't wash it each day, so there's that to factor in as well.
I know words get stuck in the buzz cycle like no this or no that or hey, charcoal in everything. Pancakes, now with more charcoal! These buzzy sorta things. I think that's all I have to say, in this longest comment in the history or ever.
Thanks for the work/research you do. It's most helpful. Cheers and boogie boogie, Ivy.

To me, face/body/hair products can be "clean" or whatever as long as they do what they're supposed to BUT while I don't care too too much about my own skin, I do also think about what goes down the drain which I personally want to make as environmentally friendly as I can.
That being said, I like supporting small local brands (here in Oz) which I usually find on IG and they're usually cruelty free and have "clean" ingredients, good packaging and shorter transport routes.

I only care about natural insofar as I have sensitive skin that reacts to nearly anything put into soaps seemingly. Nearly any unnatural fragrance for sure. Some other things too like aloe. Unless things are unnatural for no good reason, then I do pick natural.
I recently had to switch to Seventh Generation after I saw it online and had to try it (I don't think they had them in the store until recently or I never saw it or I would have before); could not be happier. I could not believe I did not know of this company. The price does not matter to me, and all deterrfent is expensice anyway. My favorite smell in this world is citrus, my favorite thing in this world is laundry being clean.
The great thing in addition to it being the most non-reactive detergent I have tried (and I used to use the Purex my dad uses to this day, he likes the smell and it's hard for us to pin down any specifics as to what it is/ he knew what years ago but forgot, so it's risky to try new ones) is it doesn't even smell like deterrgent and isn't this viscous slime. Why do deterrgents pretend to need endless water when we all have efficient washers now so nobody can actually get it out of their clothes? Gets your hand semipermamently coated if you touch it.
I hated the smell of Purex though and I decided to use a more normal deterrgent with a stronger smell so I could get away with using less, and it would smell nice. At first it was fine and I was super happy but then the more I washed my clothes the more it settled into the fabric and I started feeling itchy. Gradually I started having to choose between things being clean or being itchy so I decided to finish out the bottle and find something else.
A big thing with deterrgent in particular, it needs to wash out if you have sensitive skin and nothing has made my clothes less coated in deterrgent, OR cleaner. The free and clear especially gets my boyfriend's clothes clean without battles and that is a monumental task. Either it smells like cloth or lightly like citrus! Exactly what I want.
Excessive fragrance can be unbearable when I have a migraine too, you can't have a migraine and not be able to wear your clothes.
I use a gentle cleanser (sensitive) personally and moisturize, absolutely do have dry tending skin, occasionally do a clay mask, but I do also use a toner occasionally, honestly it gave me my skin back. It got all weird and like textured? Kind of greasy-dry sometimes. And acne popping up whether my face was clean or my hormones were wacked or not. It stopped feeling or looking like my skin, and being sure to never forget the routine wasn't working, doing scrubs as often as is reasonable did not help, or masks, or getting dangerously close to too often either. Also tried making sure my hair stayed off my face at night. I guess my pores were blocked or something, whatever it was it felt as bad it looked and nothing was working so I said you know what I'll try it.
I only used it every day for a while until I felt more me and now I just use it sometimes. I switched clay masks at the same time to a gentler one and that helped, only do it every few weeks.
Starting to get used to not being horrified anyone wants a picture.

Another thing that may be neat for a video are those "exfoliating beads" that are often made of plastics (some aren't and are some sort of cellulose thingamagig, like ground nut shells i think?), so essentially
    m i c r o p l a s t i c s i n a c a n
That one face soap at 9:13 has them i think
(granted the issue is microplastics is a mess, on at what point is it not an issue (i typically consider once it goes into the nano/just the chemicals, not the structure that fish can eat + bioacculumate in the food chain, but i digress lol) )

This was a great video but I think you dont fully understand the risk of fragrance, and the potential to develop contact dermatitis. I would watch Dr Dray's video on fragrance, it may be helpful. The main risk is that contact dermatitis with fragrance can develop spontaneously, and does not leave after it begins. The irritation impairs the skin barrier and causes a worsening of existing inflammatory skin conditions, and can even trigger the development of underlying or new conditions! also the ingredient itself is unnessecary, it doesent offer anything functional to the product, it just makes it more marketable because it smells good.

If you could find a list of brands that are vegan friendly that don't claim clean beauty that would be amazing! I've been struggling finding such brands. Another thing to mention that would keep a cosmetic or hygiene product safer is to pay attention to the expiration. Most products have a picture of a little jar with a 6m/12m/24m in it. It essentially means that the product is good for 6 months after opening or 12 months, etc. I always write the date I opened something on the bottle, so once that time period passes I dump it and since I've done this I've never had issues with a product going bad prior to that time. I know some people like to keep their products until it's all used up, but we already know for makeup (especially mascara) this isn't a good idea, so why run the risk for other cosmetic or hygiene products? It doesn't solve the clean beauty issue, but hopefully it'll help lessen the risk from mold or bacteria.
