Fly Fishing for Smallmouth BASS in an URBAN River

  • When Connecticut's Naugatuck River warms up each year, the central stretches of the stream which wind through cities and industrial parks come alive with hordes of fierce smallmouth bass. In this episode, I grab my 8-weight fly rod and a box of streamers and hit the river to prove, once and for all, that river-born bronzebacks are a welcome reality in these waters, in spite of an unfortunate history of pollution and abuse on the Naugatuck that continues to the present day.

    In 1970 the Naugatuck River was literally an open sewer with industrial waste from a rubber factory, metal plating manufacturing and many other small industries, and sewage discharges from every town in the Naugatuck valley. It’s incredible how this river has recovered from the drastic pollution that was once dumped into this beautiful river.

    grew up fishing the Naugatuck in downtown Torrington. super filthy part of the river, but still pretty loaded with smallies. it also narrows upstream a bit and has some good brookie fishing.

      @ConnecticutAngler  3 роки тому

      I’ve gone up into those smaller sections up there and found some decent brookie fishing as you mention... even browns way up on the East Branch!

    Nice outing! I'm Heading out tomorrow. It's been a very unproductive summer. Had some fun with a black ant pattern on blue gills. Going to try them on fall trout. Fish on Man.

    I love fishing for small smallies like this, especially when you can catch around 20 an hour. My favorite spot is the Lower Farmington River. While the bass are around the size of those in this video, I've caught a few nice ones. There is also a small chance of hooking into a nice pike or striper.

    • @ConnecticutAngler
      @ConnecticutAngler  3 роки тому +3

      Yes absolutely, Lower Farmington is a smallie hotspot, as well! I’ve had a great many sessions targeting them there over the years. Never did bump into a pike or striper, but of course, there HAVE been those hooksets on fish that got away before I could see them. And you know how those go: in my mind, they could’ve damn near been the Loch Ness monster..

    Naugatuck is a great river. I've caught trout, bass and salmon from it. Size 10 streamers work well. Try a triple threat woolly bugger. Certain sections really have a small stream feel.

      @ConnecticutAngler  3 роки тому +1

      Same here: all three out of the Naugy! And indeed, many sections from
      Campville northwards have a small stream feel that’s very welcome. As I mentioned to somebody else in the comments here, I’ve followed the Naugatuck all the way up into the East Branch catching browns in tiny pools. It really is such a gem of a river in spite of its troubled history of pollution.

    Love your videos, and the fact that they are all local. When you hooked the bigger one near the end and were struggling to hold the fish while adjusting the drag, I was in that same spot with a Striper and an experienced fisherman near me came over and did it for me when they saw I had no clue what I was doing LOL.

    • @ConnecticutAngler
      @ConnecticutAngler  3 роки тому +1

      I'd imagine stripers give you a serious run for your money! It's honestly fairly rare that I'm getting into fish that really necessitate the use of drag. So, more often than not, my drag is adjusted moreso to get the ideal resistance when peeling off line for a cast. Of course... when I DO get into a fish that calls for drag, I need to think FAST.

    Those hook-sets are satisfying even just to watch. After studying in Boston for the past few years, I've learned how to find fish in what most people consider dead, polluted waters.

    The Housatonic in the heat of the summer is the best place to teach someone fly fishing, at the fly fishing only section. Any sort of hopper, popper, or anything else you want to try will result in catching smallmouth until your arm falls off if they can cast directly in front of them. They will have a blast and catch lots of fish, while they practice their casting. No waders required , the cool water feels great in the summer.

    I caught one of my biggest smallmouth ever in the lower Salmon River near Sunrise Resort while striper fishing this spring. It was easily pushing 4.5lbs.

      Holy crap, that’s a huge smallie! I’ve usually just fished the upper portions of the Salmon and can only recall catching one little smallie there way up at the source confluence.

      I mean, based on the stories I’ve heard about the Naugatuck from the 70s and 80s, yes… it’s seen major improvements! That being said, I would still have to say that it’s easily the most polluted river that I spend time on each year. The volume of trash of every conceivable variety scattered throughout that river is disappointing, but at least the water quality is ample for enabling smallies to thrive. So I guess we have to take the good with the bad and just work toward better in incremental steps… certainly the river is on the right trajectory.👍🏻

    Since it’s cooled down recently would the smallies still be active where you were in this video?

    • @ConnecticutAngler
      @ConnecticutAngler  3 роки тому

      Tough to say for certain, but I can tell you that I've fished for trout and salmon in the central stretches of the Naugatuck during the cooler months of the year and I can't think of any time I've bumped into a bass.
