I’ve caught numerous stocked tigers and one wild one. The wild one was in the west branch salmon brook amongst spawning brookies last fall. I strongly suggest this stream; I’ve gotten the troutfecta there. (Rainbow, brook, brown, tiger) I’ve also gotten a wild rainbow there. But the best catches are the Atlantic salmon. I’ve caught two juveniles and one adult there, confirmed by DEEP
@@willsleavin477 definitely a fine stream; I’ve fished it many times. You can see it on an early episode I produced. Got many salmon in that stream over the years; those are surplus hatchery parr stocked by the state. Nabbed one of those in that episode, too. Never did find a tiger in those waters though. Very cool, indeed!
Caught a boatload of tigers out of the same pond in CT this past spring. Caught them out of secret pond B lol. But yeah they are definitely stocked up in CT, also got a few over by the saugatuck reservoir. So definitely in multiple systems throughout the state
I've caught less than 10, all stocked, all over 2 lbs. Countless wild brookies and browns, not if I can remember in the same streams. Wild tiger trout have to be the unicorn of the brooks, guess you need to find the right stream with the right mix of brookie and brown. I did catch a broodstock Rainbow years ago (I was 17), directly downstream of a 8ft diameter boulder. 6lb test in fast moving water on the Westfield River (vague enough). It was 32" long, didn't weight it. It actually got off the hook at shore, my dad jumped in the river and scooped it onto the shore. Biggest trout I ever caught! I wish I had weighed it, unfortunately I was young and decided to grill it on location. Fed 9. Should have let it go!
Really beautiful tiger trout! Looks wild in every way to me. But, like you said, that creek has a self-sustaining population of natural trout in it. Quite the rarity these days. I can tell you of one story of my cousin and I catching 2 wild tiger trout ( both around 10 -12”s) out of a decent sized brook trout creek that empties into the Battenkill R. But, that was , let me see, not a 100 years ago, haha , but like 40 years ago. That creek no longer can sustain a wild population of neither brookies or browns so the tigers are long gone. They have stocked it with just brown trout through the years because it couldn’t sustain a wild trout population any longer. You are very fortunate to have a creek such as that one where you have a very good chance at wild trout and the huge bonus of a tiger!! Great video as always! Will be patiently scanning and looking forward to your next one! Thanks ! And take care!
Ah that's a shame that the Battenkill trib ceased to have a wild population, but pretty cool that you both nabbed a wild tiger before then. Maybe one of these days some wilds will come up out of the big water and set up shop again. Thanks for watching!
@@ConnecticutAngler Love your persistent optimism! I should go back and try that creek sometime. But not until the streams fill back up alittle. We are so dreadfully in a drought situation around here right now it’s not funny. It’s scary. Rain dancing as I write this!
@@wildbrookies oh, for sure! Secret Stream A has literally stopped flowing since this vid was filmed in late June. Here’s to hoping all the fish seen in this vid are hanging in there. At the very least, it’s been getting very cool overnight, so the temps should be merciful even if the flows are critically low.
Great video as always! Do you have any recommendations for a lightweight 8’ 4wt rod? I love my Cabela’s Bighorn from a few years ago, but I really dislike the heaviness of the updated bighorn (2021 I think). I heard the Orvis Clearwater was a good one and I think it has a lifetime warranty, let me know what you think!
I’ve never fished an Orvis Clearwater, so I could really speak to their quality personally. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say that Orvis is pretty sincere about their reputation and wouldn’t put something out that wasn’t high-quality for its price point. You probably couldn’t go wrong there, but again, I can’t say from any direct experience with their rods. My “workhorse”, most-used combos use Redington and TFO rods, and I’ve been quite happy with them, even in their lower price point models. My main 3wt combo right now is a TFO Signature with a Lamson Liquid and my main 5wt is a Redington Path with a Lamson Liquid. I don’t have any 4wts.
Hi, would you mind terribly telling me any destinations with a population of browns and brooks (and maybe tigers)? I’m a respectful angler and will leave no trace and won’t share the destination. I’m in desperate need of new trout streams. I really want to catch my first wild tiger. Also, are you on Fishbrain?
I don’t generally try to target sea-run trout, so I’m not an authority on the subject. We do have a sea-run brown record set in 2006 though, so there are some, but that record-holder (Ron Merly, who wrote the book on fly-fishing Connecticut, literally) worked very hard at targeting them. My understanding is that they’re few and far between.
By sight alone, you couldn’t. I know purely because this is an unstocked stream where I’ve caught countless juvenile browns and brookies, indicating that both have the requisite self-sustaining populations in this water to yield tiger trout under rare conditions.
@@ConnecticutAngler no native tigers in CT, the rare conditions each species are required to reproduce just dont match. we had a stocking program in that river( male brook trout with female brown trout....) see if you can get your tshirt
@@NessieTheCattcheck out some more of my vids. There are at least 3 in which I target stocked tigers. They’re very fun and I’ve caught many since the program restarted a few years back. However, the stream seen in this vid is not stocked. This is indeed a wild tiger. A very, very rare wild tiger. The conditions necessary are rare everywhere, not just in CT, but never truly impossible in waterbodies where wild browns and brookies coexist. And this is one of those places where it happened, against all odds. If you’re still doubtful btw, go back through the CT Fish & Wildlife vids on Facebook. There’s actually a vid they filmed while doing an electrosurvey maybe 3 years ago when they find a wild tiger, as well.
@Connecticut Angler my best fishing buddy's on the team he does walleye also we had a terrific summer sorry mate 3 years ago doesn't mean a thing when it comes to water Temps for these guys specifically in this state listen bro I know that little boy puss is a a little sore
